Mystery unit could be Boxford. It would be a neat little project to make an adapter to fot the craftsman to the south bend
At 2:00, the "unknown" attachment sure looks like it has a smiling face, ha! Perhaps it is pleased to finally receive some attention after all these years.
It seems like Atlas was the only company that put any thought into rigidity.

I just got one for my old Clausing Model 100 off of eBay. Needs to be cleaned a little and painted but it's in great shape.
Haven't been able to find one for my South Bend heavy 10, so I'm making one.
Always better to use than a hammer, chisel, and file!

The palmgren 250 has been pretty handy at making spanner features in round parts but I would dread doing anything substantial.
Very interseting how they all do the same job but vary so much. For a small work shop I think this is a very valuable attachment for a lathe , expands its mode of operation coniderably, just like a tool post grinder. Thanks Mr Pete for the very indepth video and the links .
Thank You Mr. Pete, I couple of years ago I inherited an Clausing Model 100, It came with a milling attachment like that one in the Clausing catalog. They a different in that they don't have the hang over like the rest of them. I have not had the need to use it yet but some day.
Thank you Mr Pete. I found an angle plate that had been modified considerably. I later discovered that it was made to fit a 13 inch South Bend. The compound came off, the angle plate went on, then the compound mounted to the angle plate. I'm not sure if was used for a makeshift milling attachment or some other purpose. I always enjoy the show and tell.

I like the Atlas.and the "Brand X". I like both of them do to rigidity and amount of material for vibration absorption, respectively.

I had a lot of use for my Taig milling attachment before owning a proper milling machine. Quite limited travel (2inches!) but for small parts is was a lot of fun. Still better than clamping the part awkwardly on the slide. Even made clamps to hold a digital caliper on the attachment as a poor man's DRO.
Mr Pete, I checked the Grizzly catalog and website, to see if they offered a milling attachment for their modern South Bend Lathe. Sorry, no such luck. Used ones occasionally appear on Ebay .

Wasn't there a milling attachement that used the spindle and tail stock to set up as a horizontal mil for cutterl part was put on a table mounted on crosslide was made back in 1930's..40s

Vevor has several different sizes available, though they aren't specifically for your machine. If you just need it for a single job you can bolt the work to an angle plate mounted to the cross slide or compound. That sounds sketchy, but it would probably be more rigid than a part cantilevered out 6 inches like the palmgren milling attachment he showed.
For very light occasional use I think they have a purpose especially when a dedicated milling machine isn't practical or possible. I think these attachments probably had rigidity on par with the many "mini-mills" you see advertised today. I have a Sieg SX3 mini-mill in my shop which displaced the Atlas milling attachment I used to own and use on my Atlas 10-inch lathe. The mini-mill is much easier to use and has greater travel on all axes but I'd say the rigidity is only slightly greater...it's still a mini-mill and certainly not a Bridgeport.
Even a Bridgeport feels as rigid as a mini mill after you use a 40 taper machine.
@@RichieRichOverdrive True. It's all a matter of perspective. I've heard Keith Fenner refer to his Bridgeport as a "glorified drill press" :-)

Lyle, I sure wish I had the milling attachment for my old 10-inch South Bend! I know I wouldn't use it much since I've got a mill-drill for milling, but I'd still like to find one. Maybe I'll stumble over one at a garage sale or similar one of these days. I'm not anywhere near an "industrial" part of the country, so I'd have to find a home shop Machinist selling his/her stuff I guess.
Your unknown milling attachment may be a very early version of the South Bend milling attachment. I don't recall any aftermarket one's in years past. Especially any that were advertised in the popular magazines we like to look at.
Dad bought one of those Palmgren milling attachments for our 9" SBL back in the 1960's. What a wimpy attachment! Tore up many a project trying to mill with it. About all it was good for was drilling a few holes. Still have battle scars using it and in fact, still have the attachment! Its buried deep in the dungeons on the SBL cabinet! nice collection, I have a couple of the Palmgren 400v size.
Years ago I bought a Palmgren vise and removed my compound and replaced it with a solid block with a dovetail and two bolts. It helped some on the vibration with a larger bolt and hold down but you still have to be careful . I still use it, no space for a milling machine.Still love my old 9” south bend lathe . Hard on the carriage. That said, I've done some milling on an early 1911, 12" and it can be done. The compound mounting is quite different into the late 20's anyway so this is very interesting to me.
Because of this video, I grabbed the milling attachment that came with the 1928, 9C and studied it again.

I’d love to see a tear down of the Palmgren. Would one use collets to hold the cutters in the head stick? That kind of seems to be what was pictured. Very interesting video, thank you for sharing.
Yep, you need a collet to hold the cutter. Travers tool has them individually or in sets for a #2 or #3 Morse taper lathe spindle. I just bought a #3 Morse taper set just last week for about $110 that included 5 collets up to 3/4 inch diameter shanks. A chuck isn't suitable to hold the hardened shank of an end mill. Anything other than a light cut will suck the cutter out of the chuck into the work. The collets have a set screw that locks into the flat on the end mill to prevent that from happening. Plus the cutter must be held dead nuts on center or one flute will do all the cutting and any feature like a key way will be cut over size. Lastly the collet will get the milling cutter several inches closer to the lathe's spindle bearings giving more rigidity to the cutter and more room for your work.

Would you have a Clausing lathe accessories catalog? Would like to see what a steady rest looks like for a 10" lathe. I'm in the process of building one. Note: 70 degree ways, not 90 like other lathes.
If you don't have a Bridgeport, or a horizontal mill, or a shaper, like you do Tubalcain, the milling attachment can be the difference in getting a job done. While they definitely lack RIGIDITY, with light cuts and good setup, they can be satisfactory. Appreciate the run down on the different ones, I would take Brand X if it would fit my SB 13" it looks beefy.

I see that your Clausing 5914 compound slide had a rough life. Mine is cracked down to the way screw. Just ordered 2 blanks to fabricate one. I think my Beaver mill is up to it.
Yes it will. At least my 6" one does on my Atlas 618.
I have a 'milling attachment' that belongs a Myford ML7. It is the one on the left seen in this video: ua-cam.com/video/xVfnhy35QQs/v-deo.html
As per a milling machine table, it just has 3 T slots so you can clamp work directly to it - or clamp a suitable vice in which to mount your work.
It saddens me somewhat to see it in the garage where we had the ML7. Dad decided to keep it and not sell it with the lathe. Now we have a mill, we've no need for it.

Have you had a chance to evaluate any of the import milling attachment that came out in recent years? I think they're either coming from China or India, I see 3 versions ranging from mid-60's to mid-160's price. One's a small one, one's a fixed, and another one's a swivel like the atlas w/two different vise options. I'm tempted given the price.
No, I have not a valuated any of those. Really do not know much about them but I do know that you get what you pay for.

I don’t think it actually has a name. Probably a number. Go to vintage machinery.org, and look through an old south bend catalog

You are someone who has a gift of people listening to your words and, I believe we're close to being in a "all hands on deck" moment and if just one person reads your comment and thinks about our future that is a good thing. It is a shame that it has come to this yet, I feel that if I can get the word out and get people to become aware and spread the word we can keep and preserve some of the freedoms we have left.
