I love Matisse sense of colour. It changes the way you could look at things. Wish the world had those wild colours all around. Matisse is unique. Somehow his pictures changed the painting history. A great artist, doubtless. 💎❤️👍🤗

Recommendable! Covers tons of Matisse's painting, but little about his life or contemporaries etc.

Thank you for sharing this! It's a very well-written and produced documentary. One howler of a mistake though when he mentions that the style of "Luxe, Calme, et Volupté" [he mispronounces the final word, which isn't so bad] was "uncongenital." He means "uncongenial," of course.

Narration is dripping with affectational pretentiousness peppered with unctuous revelation

Color reproduction is very bad. So is the narration -- annoyingly intellectual. How could a documentary on Matisse pass over Woman in a Hat without comment?

I agree. Keep up the good spirit. And thanks for watching.

Nice video, but the speaker kept me laughing---so like a self-conscious art critic. Almost a parody of a critic.

Have to agree. Whatever "scholar" wrote this narration is making one mistake after another. For instance saying a few minutes into the documentary that Matisse's influence, his creative well was drawn from 19th Century movements alone, leaving out Matisse's own time. How about Picasso his one true rival?

@@appletongallery why rival though? why not "contemporary"?

Henri, why didn't you quit while you were ahead, say in 1920. Those uncreative Walmart designs at the end of your career go on your permanent record, you know, and drag your overall grade down to a B+

xyzllii ..I so agree ! There is a game show on television called “Jeopardy “. At one point, as the contestants need to think, a catchy but annoying little musical phrase plays in the background.
It is almost impossible to concentrate as the mind becomes occupied following this music. I turn the sound off. If I could, I would do the same here.
