    I can see how pictures that look like photographs are just miming reality but art that seems to show life through a spiritual lens sees the magic overlooked in everyday life.

    I read some of the comments. Always a risky proposition on UA-cam. But nevermind. I've been an artist my entire life, since age 5 probably earlier. No amount of negative comments, even the entire world could ever convince me that Henri Matisse is not one of the most wonderful painters I've ever seen since I first became aware of his art in 1972 art school :-) And even now, I watch this UA-cam video and find my appreciation for forms and color growing as I appreciate his work. He will always be one of my greatest art heroes.
    J'adore l'oeuvre d'Henri Matisse!

    I agree that seeing the paintings in chronological order would be more valuable to seeing how Matisse evolved as an artist. The dates and locations of where he created the works would also be very useful.
    His paper cut-outs and stained glass windows, created at the end of his life are filled with so much joy, in spite of his physical limitations.
    He was always expanding his visions, and some paintings are just better than others.
    I love his use of colors in his paintings and paper cut-outs.
    Thank you for this video.

    Negative comments don't understand Matisse as genius color mixer...his most famous disciple imo Richard Diebenkorn exemplifies Matisse's contribution to art as a formalist that established most of the precepts of modern abstract works.
    Of course his technique can be criticized as malformed, ugly crooked noses and other disjointed anatomical affects...what you see is what you get, and most professional painters agree on his importance in the sweep of art history.
    Then there are those who think that Bob Ross is great, with his Hallmark card renderings.

    • @jadezee6316

      comparing bob ross to matisse....is a poor point..it is not about subjectivity...but rather does the quality of ones work..place him/her into the arena of great artists...a debate that would never include ross...

    It would be more interesting to see paintings in chronological order. That way you would see the progression of artist in his/her career. Of course it would require more time when making the video. Even order of early, middle, late periods of artists would be enought. And one more thing: Do not add zoom to the images!

  • @yacovmitchenko1490
    @yacovmitchenko1490 Місяць тому

    Matisse has grown on me over the years. At his best, he paints females with elegance and grace. Typically, they come across as peaceful, content, or engaged in quiet contemplation. At times, they're quite mysterious. Few, if any, 20th century painters rival him in that department. I can think of only Modigliani who has a comparable grace. To his credit, he has also experimented a great deal. He does, however, miss the mark frequently, producing works one would ignore if it were not for his big name. Works that are too coarse, unfinished, blurry, amounting to bad impressionism. One probably wouldn't take them even if they were left on a sidewalk. While the majority of paintings here have not left an indelible mark, Matisse flies high on a good day.
    My problem with many famous 20th century painters is the lack of classical precision. They may have avoided that deliberately, at least in some cases, but I think they've done so at a tremendous cost, much to the detriment of their work. Dali, fortunately, understood the value of precision and quite rightly regarded the lack of it as a sign of degeneration. Matisse, in his best work, shows precision, that one's modernity can be strengthened through it.

Deeper and innate expression has a right to exist too.
