I had the pleasure of seeing GMF talk live at the launch of Flashman on the March when he stated the ideal actor for Flashy would have been Errol Flynn - someone who looks every bit the heroic ideal.
Fans of Jack Reacher said the same thing about Tom Cruise, more recently. It's disappointing that a key part of the character can be so flagrantly neglected . Director should be flogged...
My thoughts exactly. I always imagined a young Sean Connery with full whiskers (although maybe taller and broader) and an English accent. McDowell wasn't only the wrong look but played the character far too camp. Its top easy to believe he's a cad and a coward. The comedy in Flashman was in the idea of this big hairy English hero crying for his life. The charge of the light brigade was always one of the funniest scenes for me. An Errol Flynn looking hero farting in fear on his way to the cossack guns lol
I always thought McDowell was miscast in this film. Flash was meant to be bigger and broader, darker and better looking. He should be able to sell himself as a English hero of the era. McDowell always looked top slight and and played it a bit too camp.
Zulu swashbuckler. The part where they were sword fighting and the woman was still cleaning like as if to say this things happen all the time had dying laughing ha ha ha ha 😆 😂 🤣🤣🤣😂
Bates ir John Alderton should have been Harry. I love Malcolm McDowell but He played it too weak. Also Richard Lester is a bad director. Waaay too much ADR in this and others of his
McDowell did his best to be a craven lecherous sneak but he's just too weedy to be a convincing Harry Flashman.

If Bates had played Flashy and McDowell Starnberg, we’d have had a classic.
No one had whiskers as black as our good old Flashy, aye?
Wouldn't fancy facing Rudi myself.....or his son!

Was this the choreography of William Hobbes?
Yes Sir. He writes about this particular fight in his book "Fight Direction".
this almost looks like a prisoner of zenda parody
