In 1986, inspired by a cartoon in a 4-wheel drive magazine, William Townes built the "Virginia Beach Beast", a combination of a Chevy Blazer and an M-4 tracked base. Dubbed a "monster tank" by the fans & event announcers, this vehicle made quite an impression on the monster truck & tractor pull circuit. In the following years, more monster tanks would appear across North America, as a new division of monster vehicle competition emerged. In a few short years, however, the monster tanks would become almost extinct, as these much heavier, and comparatively slower vehicles would be unable to contend with the quickly-evolving monster trucks. This video features some of the best from this brief era in the sport, including such greats as the Bigfoot "Fastrax", William Townes' "Virginia Beach Beast", Allen Gaines' "Orange Blossom Special Express", Ernie Brookins' "Trak Attack", Butch Lowe's "Car Killer", George Cole's "Gator", Michelle Ely's "Daddy's Girl", Mike Vaters' "Battle Kat", and many more.

At the time,most promotors banned the monster tanks because they were so heavy and tearing up the arena floors..

I heard from a monster tank driver that the breed died out because they were too hard on the operators; lots of back and neck stress. There's a fairly new one called 'Major Payne,' which I think started competing in the late 2010s, but I don't know if it's still on the circuit, or if any others have come in. There's a vid on UA-cam about a guy who made a 'rat rod' out of an old Universal Carrier chassis, but I don't think it's made for monster truck competition.

I've heard that there were several contributing reasons for their decline. For one, most of them didn't have much suspension travel, if any at all, so they were much tougher on the drivers. I had also heard that some venues expressed concern over potential damage to their floors, due to the weight of the vehicles. I wonder, too, if declining spectator interest may have played a part. By 1991, lighter fibreglass-bodied monster trucks were becoming more common, and were much faster and more agile than the comparatively slower tanks.
That was Awesome Dude that was the Days when the World of Monsters had Creativity all over the Place and Greatness to Spare it will take some won With time and determination and a drive to make them known again to bring them back that and have to come up with a safet suspension for the Monster tanks Because monster tanks do not have a rael Suspension you really get tore up driving those But for the fast tracks they're good to go They have a good suspension travel Last I heard of bigfoot fast tracks It got sold to Chandler Lloyd who has now renamed it Overtime fast tracks to make them Popular again I myself may give it a go some day🏁
I still got a bunch of old programs from mud bogs and monster truck rallies in the mid to late 80’s. I remember the sorta halftime show was guys running through the mud pit for prize money..
I wonder who would win on an obstacle course, these guys or the guys that do tank Olympics competitions.

I don't understand why they would retire these legendary vehicles, sure... they can't keep up with the evolution of Monster Trucks, but these machines were a category of their own. Id love to see these beasts make a return to motorsport entertainment.

Was watching the Chieftrain about tanks and he’s mentioned there’s no record of a tank hitting another tank.
Wish the Grave Digger Wild Trax concept came to reality. Though at least we have Spin Master's Trax toy, thank them for that.

Im not really a fan, but they do have a place in Monster history. I remember seeing Heavy Chevy, Car Killer and the Willie Townes interview in Pulling Power magazine.
