According to the Dutch constitution, Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, although the parliament and the Dutch government have been situated in The Hague since 1588, along with the Supreme Court and the Council of State.
Accommodation does seem to be very expensive even hostels are not cheap. A walk along the canals taking in the architecture and trying some Dutch street food might be first day activity.
Amsterdam is one large cliché-filled tourist trap, a theme park. Regular Dutch people in general dislike this pretentious noisy city and its arrogant inhabitants. Visit Utrecht or Rotterdam instead, if you want to experience the Netherlands as it truly is.
I agree the dominant culture of the Netherlands is barely present, but as someone who lives in the city center, it is fine as long as the rest of The Netherlands keep the Dutch culture and roots. Amsterdam has been a city of trade, not of conservatism and traditional since the 16th century and it will not change any time soon I believe

And add to that several beautiful historic and interesting smaller cities located around the country. Rail travel is the way to go.
