For me as an Amsterdammer the worst part of this all is the lack of respect for the locals from the tourist. They just treat my city as it's one big amusement park and we're the NPCs.

True. But the problem in Amsterdam is that those 22m tourists all flock to a 6sqm city centre making it and the surrounding environment extremely crowded. The Netherlands as a country could easily support that many tourists, even more. But it becomes a real issue when its so concentrated on one spot.

Gotta take in consideration that these countries you mention are way smaller than America. If you combine The Netherlands, Germany, Italy in Spain you're not even close to the size of the USA. I hear what you're saying but as a born and raised Amsterdammer is clear that this city is just not build for the amount of tourism it attracts. Amsterdam in particular is just too small.

All depends on the kind of tourist:
      - Going to a place to see the city, go to musea, get the history, eat locals food and so on.
      or
      - Going to a place to take drugs, party hard, get wasted, starting fights, pissing on peoples doorstep, drown in the canal.
The second group is a problem for the Amsterdam locals.
The good suffers from the actions of the bad.

1:10 so banning airbnb would mean a lot of apartments would go back to locals, so rent would drop, while the cost of hotels would indeed go up, meaning less tourist and less overcrowding, which is a perfectly win-win scenario! and for a rich country like the netherlads a drop in tourism (which would still be high) would be insignificant for the economy, so the only thing that guy was wrong about is that it would be a bad thing

No way, air b&b is not the issue here, it is already regulated. The issue is 60% of all residential housing is subsidized in Amsterdam, so called sociale woningbouw. The Amsterdam Economics Board estimates that tourism, including business travelers, generates over €10.3 billion annually, supporting 88,000 jobs. Additionally, tourists spend just under €2 billion each year in the city, with cultural tourism playing a significant role
also, think of how many industries depend upon tourism? i bet most of them are the ones producing essentials for hotels, ships, food etc.. all of them will be turned down.. all the big lines that you hate which tourists make are because of the fancy businesses like cookies, drugs etc... start selling these kind of things in other cities of Netherlands.. promote other places of Netherlands... that's the solution to over tourism... banning tourism would scare people away from your shores for a long time, the impact of which you can only observe later, just like impact of brexit appeared after it was done but not before then that

The hotel ban on the center was so stupid. Yes, they didn't allow more hotels in the center, but around the metro line, A LOT of massive hotels were allowed so number of beds increased by a huge amount. Nobody in the municipality thought that all that people who stayed in the hotels wouldn't go to the center anyway?! Yes. They spread people around a little but they all go to the center anyway, so the overcrowded center is much worse. More hotels and being constructed. Now they say they want to ban ALL hotels, in like 3-5 years? So we will go from 22 million to what? 30?
In the meantime the city is filthy, and taxes for citizens continue go up.
The problem is tourism does benefit the city, but when you pass certain threshold it only benefits a few and everyone else suffers!
Amsterdam is one or the most over overcrowded city in the world perhaps? The ratio between residents and visitors is like 22:1 :(

This is actually because Schiphol is the gateway to Europe. It's the second most travelled airport of the EU with 62 million passengers a year. Nobody is complaining who bought a house 30 years ago. I saw a women on AT5 who bought it at 200k and it's worth 1.3 million now.
It's a great idea to split international air traffic to another airport in Rotterdam. That would relief Amsterdam of some tourism. We've 99% of international air traffic in one spot.

All the measures that are being taken in Amsterdam to reduce tourism are a great display about the level of disconnection politicians have with the common citizen, most of the measures taken against tourists are actually affecting the locals.
This used to be an amazingly beautiful, fairly clean and working city, years of mismanagement led to this terrible situation the city is in right now.
Creating "spaces for multiple uses", yeah, they've been repeating this for years... in the meantime they are creating new neighborhoods that don't even have a supermarket, a small store for groceries, pharmacies, a variety of bars and restaurants, pushing everyone to go to the city center for absolutely everything. I know that because I lived in two of those new neighborhoods, and I live in one of those right now.
Amsterdam's new neighborhoods are designed to provide housing and that's it, for the rest... go to the center.

Those that actually live here their full lives left underrepresented and dealing with policies, infrastructure and lasting decisions they don’t want and those that voted for it no longer being there to live with the consequences of it.

If Amsterdam wants to discourage tourists I think that is their prerogative. More power to them. But don't complain that the tourists go away when the economy takes a down tick. Ask Hawaii how that is working out. Lots of anti-tourist sentiment and rising prices and now they're whining about the tourist numbers dropping. Plus, if a location makes it clear that they don't want me to visit......then I'll go somewhere else.

@@kaydesign 6% of what businesses? In the whole country? In the region? Just in downtown? Regardless, not sure what your point is. Tourism fell off by only about 2% in Hawaii last year and it had a significant impact on local businesses according to local news sources. But again, that's not the point. If a city or country doesn't want or need tourism then fine. Make it harder on tourists to come. Tax them more. O make them unwelcome like they did in Hawaii. Just don't complain about the economic impact, like they are doing in Hawaii.
Having said that, I have lived in an old southern US city (one of the oldest) where tourism has been a major part of the economy for the last 50 years or more. Tourism can and does have an erosive impact. But at the same time it has provided a vibrant restaurant scene, one of the best in the world, as well as cultural events, art, music and major income for local traditional craftsmen. Take the tourism away and all of that goes away. Pick your poison. Just don't complain about your choice.

@@riverdorfsee4324 you barely tax(and that is 30% not like 10%) multinationals for only “5 years”. Your only advantage is you guys use English like its your first language. That is why multinationals choose you “for now”. With this mindset, you won’t go too far though.

You could sell “produce” all your life. It is not technology. I wonder what you guys will do when classified workers choose another country instead of Netherlands and with this mindset it is close.

As a Dutch citizen I don't even visit Amsterdam. Too busy, overpriced, nothing interesting to see at least not for me. Enough other nice places with a lot less tourists.
