    I can't imagine that tasted anything like French onion soup - the onions are not even caramelized. This guy's cooking videos bring to mind late nights in the kitchen after a long evening at the bar. You may think you're creating a masterpiece but you wouldn't eat it sober.

    So much wrong with this video. The onions aren't cooked nearly enough. You got them to the first stage of becoming somewhat softened and translucent, but they barely reduced in size. Your onions should reduce in size to at least 1/4 the original amount, and be a medium-dark brown color. Huge problem with the cheese as well. Why use something like parmesan which does not melt well? Stick with the classic gruyere and/or swiss. It also seems as if this recipe would be quite bland. French onion soup should have some sort of herb in it, generally herbs de provence. Not really sure why you use mustard at all. Have never heard of this(maybe its good) but it really isn't french onion soup then. This is more, the "what I could find at costco onion soup". Might be good, just a really odd recipe.

    • @ommar3654
      @ommar3654 8 років тому +21

      It's definitely bland. The one thing besides herbs that would give it good taste would be the onions, but they weren't cooked enough to caramelise and release sweet onion flavour.

    My Difference for when I make french onion soup is I cut the onions differently, and I follow the Julia Child recipe. If you cut the onions in half after peeling and then cut them into thin strips from the stem end down, you can almost turn the onion slices into noodles. Child is god when it comes to cooking, give her a nod and your dish will turn out great :)

    Cooking the garlic first allows the butter to be garlic flavored so long as the heat isnt too high or you let it cook too long. When the garlic starts to turn golden, the onion will slow down the garlic's cooking process and at the same time absorb the butter and garlic favors. You would need a longer cooking time if you reverse the order of cooking which also means a lower cooking temperature.

    @AkemiAizen you can do whatever you want. it wasn't a lot of salt and pepper for that huge skillet. that soup made 8 bowls worth. Not putting the cheese on it is like making cupcakes without frosting.

    Suggestion: salt just a little after putting in onions and that should reduce the cooking time as well. Also wouldn't need as much salt at the end either. Tried this recipe and that's how I did it and turned out FANTASTIC! Love your channel.

    @nikemary if you cook a chicken and eat all the meat off the bones, then take the bones and what little bit of stuff is on the bones and boil it for about an hour then filter just the juice out of the mix and leave the garbage behind, that is broth. Same goes for beef.

    @HeatherC19 I use Ronco knives (cheap but good so far) and I use Tfal pans. I am slowly switching to Calphalon pans after my frying pan episode.

    Just a tip, if u ever need to finely chop onions, you cut it in half and use one half and then you chop it like in the vid except very thin. Then you hold it together, and you chop through the width.
