5 Natural Alternatives to ADHD Medication (..that work)

  • How can you cure ADHD naturally? Over the years I have figured out 5 ways to naturally and alternatively medicate adhd and have managed to almost completely quit my prescribed adhd medication. Prescribed medication such as ritalin, adderal, methylphenidate, concerta or other stimulants can have bad side-effects such as mood swings, feeling demotivated or for me: just being generally more frustrated.
    The 5 ways are:
    1. Exercise
    2. Eating the right food (including supplements)
    - Protein
    - Natural Supplements:
    Iron: amzn.to/2KTcYxv
    Omega 3: amzn.to/35mcDgd
    Zinc: amzn.to/3aWo2EH
    Vitamin C, B16 & B12: amzn.to/2z2lZBs
    3. Mindfulness Meditation

I am 48 and have ADHD and was really struggling with work with anxiety verging into depression and was ready to chuck in my job. I did my own research and made a few changes without using medicine. Now my life's completely turned around and I'm not only surviving I'm thriving and even got promotion recently. This is what really helped me personally:
    1) Cold showers every morning
    2) Exercise- I jog and do 50 push ups each day without fail,
    3) Coffee- I have a cup just before an important work meeting so my brain can perform under pressure
    4) Gardening- I have a place where I can chill out and be with nature
    5) Music- I play background music like soft jazz if I am really struggling to concentrate for work at a desk, or lively music if I'm feeling tired when driving

I'm 52 yo and, recently, I've find out that I have ADHD, inattentive type. I've tried to learn how to tackle with it, even by udemy courses, but this channel here is pure gold! Well, I've tried mindfulness meditation and it really helps me to quiet my mind. For the majority of people, having a quiet mind isn't a issue, but I feel frequently overwhelmed by the intense flow of my thoughts and ideas. So, having a time to ease down and feel my mind free of is truly a delightful experience. On teh other hand, I have experienced that speed reading and memorization are helpful techniques, because they are contributing for me to get things done (at least, my list of read books is increasing...). As an ADD person, I feel a lack of achievement, with a list of personal projects that only grows and that I often fail to acomplish.

Please, try one minute breathing or meditation, you ill find lots in book, app, utube...
For one week only once aday, not more. Second week 2 minute maditation or breathing only once à day. Third week 2 minute twice à day. 4 th week 3 minute per session and you decide how many times à day.
In the Firth week you may have come up yourself with shg.
It can be always the same meditation or breathing exercice or different ones. It is totally up to you.
There is not 1 meditator the same and there is not 1 whose thoughts never wander. It is not a price competion, nor a race. The training takes time, but most importantly I guess it takes your time and some commitment to go into the unknown ( that is what you think) that is what you...think, feel, hide, bodysensations, love...etc. All new.
A way "in" is also whether yoga nidra sessions ( see youtube) or 1minute to 6+ hour sleep méditations.
It makes going to sleep easier and if using always the same method, you will get valuable rest.
I like to hear Deepak Choprah, but there are millions of others, whatever works for you is fine. Some people even tape there own voice reading a meditation and it works for them.
      No obligation, just try outs.
John Kabbat Zinn could be an interesting intro. He got all this into hospitals and comes from a mindfull place of taking care of the most possible people and selfcare autonomy.

I took methylphenidate for 25 years and loved the focus and ability to think and plan. Then I started falling asleep all day from my 15mg short acting doses which I took 3 or 4 times a day . I did not feel good about taking 20mg. I had to stop altogether cold turkey and slept day and night for three months, getting up to eat and do chores. Now it has been about 5 years without Ritalin. I still can’t focus. I still take naps too much. I can think for a few minutes after waking up each morning, then I’m back to brainless for the day.
I like all your recommendations. I would add that I benefit from routines, so that I can get some things done without having to think. ♥️

I love this ! This is so true. Especially, exercise, sleep and eat healthier. I figured those out on my own.
When i have a task at work that makes me move more Im totally focused and feel great.
When the Boss gives me a task that requires me to stand in one spot , I feel like my brain is shutting down.
I can't stand still. I feel horrible when I eat too much junk food. So I try not to.
If I don't get enough sleep, I can't function at work.

I also tried ritalin/concerta for a few years on and off (post-university), quitting every time after a few months because I didn't like the irritability or robotic feeling it gave me. They both did calm me and help me process things more easily. Coffee gets me motivated but for some reason actually worsens my focus. lol
Alright I'm going to alienate myself now with a random anecdote but a couple years ago I went on a high-fat carnivore diet for 3 months. After the first week I felt a calm I had never experienced before. That calm was consistent and I was always in a good mood. Nothing seemed to stress me out anymore or that I could easily manage it. And for the rest of that time it seemed like most of my adhd symptoms were minimal. My recovery with exercise improved greatly. My retention and focus were more effortless. But after some holiday peer pressure, I stopped and have failed to consistently get back on it since. I realize that to many, this sort of thing sounds wacky or unhealthy. But I really think people who have adhd or have issues related to stress and anxiety, this might be worth a try. This diet is more commonly used with autoimmune disorders and other situations where people really can't eat other foods without major complications. I don't really associate with any dogma with this diet, if I can get the same results eating other foods I'm willing to do so. So far keto helped but not nearly to the same degree and I have no idea why! Anyway, just thought I'd share. Maybe I'll finally get the discipline to do it again lol

    • @ADHDPatrick
      @ADHDPatrick 3 роки тому +3

Thank you for sharing that! I myself found success with Low Carb diet, I feel more calm and more stable. I still use Concerta, but small dose 18-36mg. Coffee is hit or miss for me, sometimes it makes hyper and jumpy without focus, :)

Add brains need more proteins and things like avocados. We also need spinach and to keep off sugars and flour. I think our gut bacteria is also very sensitive. Red meat is your friend. As are high amounts of vegetables. And to a lesser extent a variety of fruit and nuts. And consistent exercise, cardio particularly. Three miles a day around. I know what I should do in theory but that requires a whole lot of discipline. The problem I’m trying to solve lol

You should probably look up things that don't help when you think you're helping with your friend with ADHD. These solutions may help some people, but it is not a substitute for conventional traetment, and its not a magic solution . meds only work 80% of the time, but if they do work then don't mess with it. its irresponsible, and someone with ADAH who may be susceptible may suffer for it. leave it to their doctor.

The biggest one I would say is dieting, which you kind of touched on but glossed over what I think is most important. Artificial ANYTHING is terrible for ADHD, specifically artificial coloring (red 40, yellow 7, blue 6 etc) the stuff in Gatorade, Doritos, Cheetos, all the good stuff, will send your brain spiraling. Also foods that are very artificial and have lots of preservatives in them do the same thing. Before I was medicated for ADHD I was on a diet for years and I have to say it does make a big difference.

The issue (for me) with exercise, is that without my stimulant meds, I can’t even get out of bed. And I don’t mean sleeping in often, I mean lying in bed feeling anxious about not being able to will myself out of bed, forcing myself back to sleep till I get headaches and dehydration, and nightmares. Most days I’m in bed 18 hours, some days I don’t even move except to pee and eat junk food, which I take to bed with me, creating piles of garbage.
On the meds, i can actually stay out of bed nearly a normal amount of time.
Also I take Sertaline, which has the unfortunate side effect of making me sweat SO much, even just from walking round the house once. Even in winter. Even with fans. Even naked. And I mean SWEAT. Hair soaked, clothes soaked, glasses slipping, drips in my eyes. Luckily it doesn’t smell.
Despite the sweating I still force myself to get groceries, visit family. Nothing more though. Especially socialising.
I cannot fathom the idea of going out in public for a 30 minute walk, sweating, bright red, dragging my feet and panting. It’s to embarrassing to just do for the sake of it, when there’s no actual immediate purpose. I get that in the long run it will be better, but I lack the ability to see long term goals as “real”. My brain doesn’t function without instant reward. Going out just to walk, has many more cons than pros, in the short term. And I only function in the short term. Which just can’t be fixed.

It's mostly missinformation due to its unaccuracy. Diet is all over the place, but he does name some of the correct nutrients people should be getting and they don't. Coffee is pretty much replacing one drug with another. And meditation is generic advice that never helps, though there are some meditation practices that do help, and mindfulness isn't one. The only accurate part is when he talks about moderate intensity cardio.

Why does taking a stimulant (caffeine) not count as 'medicated' in the way that an amphetamine or methylphenidate does? Just a philosophical thing to think about when deciding if medication is for you or not; as they're all drugs and I'd argue that caffeine can do more harm than a low dose pharmaceutical.
