@ThinWhiteAxe King George III didn't have an older brother I think you are thinking of his father Frederick, Prince of Wales who died without becoming king
one of my favorite figures from the british royal family. amazing how she managed to exude positivity and joy despite the tragedies and neglect she endured
One thing that everyone seems to forget is that Charlotte's birth, wedding and (if ended in a good way) childbirth only solved the problem for the british crown not the hannoverian, unless the hannoverian succession had been changed in her favour. Providing Charlotte hadn't died she could have had another two, three or four more children when succeding to the british throne aged 34 having a bunch of heirs to carry on her line. If the boy had survived while she herself wouldn't have he would have succeded his grandfather at the age of 13 with a regency in the best case of his father or someone more responsible the George IV had been.
The Crown of Hanover would’ve passed back and fourth between George’s other sons, with one likely marrying and securing a son so it wasn’t a huge issue
In this case, I understand. Despite everything, she was his daughter. I hardly could go to both of my grandparents funerals in 2019 and back in February.

I just kept thinking if I had these complications 200 years ago I could have ended up like her - it was a sobering reality of how dangerous childbirth is to women and how the death of royal women during childbirth has changed history.
When women today say they are born in the wrong era and how they wish they were born in the past, I always think about birth process. So many lost their lives during child birth. So a big NOP.
Not to mention, if the woman failed to give birth to a son, it was considered her fault, never mind that it takes two to tango and the king is just as culpable.😅

I have hoped for so long you would make a video of Princess Charlotte, and you certainly did not disappoint. Such a tragic life, only gaining happiness for such a short time. It truly is heartbreaking. Can’t wait for next week’s video.
In both cases, history was dramatically altered. In Charlotte’s case, her not becoming Queen led to Victoria becoming Queen instead. Victoria tried to avert war by marrying her children off into Europe’s royal houses but it backfired dramatically when her grandchildren all turned on each other about a decade after her death and thus came world war I. Rhaenys not becoming Queen led to Viserys taking the throne and we all know how his actions led to the Dance of Dragons.

His family was notorious for producing some of the best looking men of the era. Albert, his brother Ernst, their cousin Ferdinand were all famously gorgeous and VERY popular with the ladies. If your father is given the nickname "Henry IX", then all that "Sorrows, sorrows, prayers." is nothing more than the exceptional creativity of Shonda Rhimes.
This is a reason why a c section is needed, as it is the only safe presager that can be done if complications like this happen as they have been done since ancient times, so if that had been done there is some chance both might have been saved. Her father was a real piece of work and so was his mistress. If she and the baby had survived, I still think Queen Victoria and her bloodline would still have existed since there wouldn't have been much guarantee on how long Charlotte and her child would have live in a general sense. Either way I'm sure Charlotte and Leopold would have been great rulers and things would have turned out a lot better in so many ways if things had been different.

Makes me grateful that childbirth has become so much safer for those of us lucky enough to have improved care. But sad for women around the world who don’t
I think they might have chosen Susannah Harker for that role, because she very much fit the beauty ideal of that time. People like to complain that in the 1995 adaptation, Lizzy was actually prettier than Jane, but in Regency times, this Jane would have been considered superior in looks.
That had more to do with their mother. She was reluctant to have her daughters marry. Those who did marry did it when they were unlikely to have children and literally had to beg Queen Charlotte to allow it.

The Princess Charlotte of Wales couldn't be the Queen. But sometimes I wonder what if our present Princess Charlotte of Wales ends up ascending the throne :D You never know how the future takes turns!
In the discussion of the problems that she had with her pregnancies, no one seems to talk about the fact that her parents were 1st cousins (as later Victoria and Albert would be) and what issues could arise from that. I have found it odd that after seeing all of the dour photos that I've seen of Leopold as King of the Belgians, he was considered the most handsome prince in all of Europe when he married Charlotte. The only good thing that can be said for her father is that he had the most exquisite taste imaginable. Excellent video.
It isn't odd. Beaty standards are never the same. He would be considered average these days, but concepts of beauty change. Many of the beautiful ladies of that time wouldn't be considered beautiful today.
@@blahblahblahblah729 Many of the beautiful ladies of today would have been considered anorexic (if that term existed back then - but you get the point) back in the days of great beauties like Lillian Russell. Also, there are no photographs of a young Prince Leopold only those of him later in life.
Inbreeding does not work that way and the public has no clue how it actually shows up. It doesn't cause people to be ugly or deformed and most commonly it shows up as a genetic anomaly that isn't even detectable visually, not to mention that although it's gross, 1st cousins having children together isn't super dangerous, you'd need parent and child relationships for many generations in a row to produce any noticeable effect genetically.
@blahblahblahblah729 he is older in those pictures, though. The portrait in his youth looks v handsome but likely is tweaked. We have portraits of a young Victoria that shows her looking pretty but the 1st photo of her is when she is 25. She looks way older and not much like the portraits being painted a year before the pic. So who really knows if he was handsome when young. Also I'd imagine the royals would have a lower standard for beauty amongst marriage prospects. They normally had to marry other royals and nobles who were related to them. The list of prospective spouses was limited. So their idea of beauty had to be lower.

Every child was a gamble for every woman, everybody knew that, but most woman didn't have the luxury to have just one or two; they had to have as many as possible because there was no guarantee that their children would live.
@@nuotatorre8741 I think the chances of having many children was also decided by the lack of birth control or prevention in those days... But then again, you're totally correct. Humanity and reproduction survived this far after all. I guess it just depended on the person and the choices that were made at the end of the day. I was just trying to explain the possible factors
George IV was a REAL piece of work. I’d rather use stronger language but I’ll behave today LOL. As always Lindsay thank you for this content.
With how much of for lack of a better word, he made King John look like a good man
It's no wonder that when he died in 1830, The Times newspaper rightfully said "No monarch will be less generally mourned." and "An inveterate voluptuary, especially if he be an artificial person, is of all known beings the most selfish".
He was a better brother than a father.
I labored for 64 hours. They also declined food. I nearly bled to death after a traumatic delivery. My baby almost died too. He was 8.3 lbs, he BH just turned 12 years old. I feel for poor Princess Charlotte
Have you and your son been tested for Porphyria/Haemophilia?
Lindsay, you should do a series on royal heirs who predeceased their monarch and how that changed history (i.e. Prince Arthur dying before Henry VII so Henry VIII asceded the throne instead)
Another great example of this is Edward the Black Prince dying before his father Edward III, which eventually led to the Wars of the Roses
King George III's older brother dying as a prince also
Ooh, yes please.😮
Henry Stuart is another great example.
Edited to correct which channel this appeared on - History Calling has a video titled the "Princes of Wales Who Never Became Kings" that covers many of these tales, but I would love to see more details on many of these almost-monarchs from Lindsay as well!
@ThinWhiteAxe King George III didn't have an older brother I think you are thinking of his father Frederick, Prince of Wales who died without becoming king
The Memorial to Princess Charlotte in St. George's Chapel is stunning, and very moving.
Is Charlotte buried next to her parents?
.
one of my favorite figures from the british royal family. amazing how she managed to exude positivity and joy despite the tragedies and neglect she endured
“Sorrows, sorrows, prayers!”
Sorrows sorrows prayers prayers
He was grief stricken but couldn’t bring himself to attend the funeral?! What a piece of work!
quite understandable.
he's depressed, he's too sad. It's understandable
In this case, I understand. Despite everything, she was his daughter. I hardly could go to both of my grandparents funerals in 2019 and back in February.
@@damonika09 Everyone grieves differently and responds to it differently, but that doesn't mean they don't love them. George was bedridden for weeks and he fell into a deep depression when Charlotte died. Moreover, he was suffering from gout at that time, which made it difficult for him to carry out his activities.
@@dukeofbekasi2789 yep. No parent should bury a child always ring true. And still applies to him. He lost his daughter and grandson in one night. He shouldn’t have gotten the blame for what happened to Charlotte either. It’s just tragic all around.
I just love getting the historical "tea" from you lindsay. The ammount of information you manage to convey is AMAZING! Your story telling skills are incredible. British history is mt favorite and you always make it better! Keep the tea flowing. I'm here for it
Charlotte looked 10 years older than she actually was.
This absolutely broke my heart - what a wonderful woman she seemed to be
Christ Lindsay you brought me to tears with the descriptions of people reacting to her passing😭
Thank you for this video! Last fall, when I had to have an emergency c section for my daughter due to some complications, ALL I could think about during the surgery was poor Princess Charlotte.
@@ChibiProwl ye lol. Fathers decide baby gender, 100% their doing. 😅
Like everytime I hear about pregansy stories on YT I ask myself how are we not exint yet? With so many complications and things that can go wrong, it's a miracle we are still here.
I’ve never heard women saying this, usually white men.
@EvelynSaungikar Many women on Instagram say that "they want the good old days back." Mainly because "men were gentlemen back then"😆
And because of the fashion. They always forget about the bad living conditions the men and women had back then
Queen Charlotte!! Maybe in another universe somewhere or a different timeline perhaps!! Sounds great!! Has a nice ring to it!! Queen Charlotte the great!! The beloved!! The perfect Queen!! Long live the Queen!! 👑❤👏🙌🙏👍🎉
You definitely told this story from the heart
Leoplod was the brother of Queen Victoria's mother as well as Prince Albert's father.
He was a direct blood uncle to both.
Actually, Prince Albert's father was Ernst, duke of Saxe-Coburg, not Leopold.
@@rebeccablackburn9487 I worded that incorrectly. Yes. Leopold was uncle
to both Victoria and Albert via his sister Victoria & brother Ernst.
What a sad life she had. It's beyond me, how a father can act so horrendously towards his own child.
And than to die so early in childbirth 🥺
I search every so often for a video on her. There were so few a few years ago and now there’s a good amount. She’s an interesting figure in British royal history. Makes you wonder what if.
It's sad she died so young, she had so much too live for!🥀 Godspeed the Royal Family!🌺
I have hoped for so long you would make a video of Princess Charlotte, and you certainly did not disappoint. Such a tragic life, only gaining happiness for such a short time. It truly is heartbreaking.
Can’t wait for next week’s video.
I like learning more about her.
Must be something in the water of Leopold’s family. They created Charlotte and Victoria, two incredible women.
As well as Carlota! Intelligent, ambitious, and refined
"The Queen who never was" reminds me of Rhaenys Targaryen. Both would have been great Queens. ❤
yess that was all i could think of when I saw the title
In both cases, history was dramatically altered. In Charlotte’s case, her not becoming Queen led to Victoria becoming Queen instead. Victoria tried to avert war by marrying her children off into Europe’s royal houses but it backfired dramatically when her grandchildren all turned on each other about a decade after her death and thus came world war I. Rhaenys not becoming Queen led to Viserys taking the throne and we all know how his actions led to the Dance of Dragons.
@@truetory6231 I haven't thought about it from that angle 😱 Love your analysis! ❤️
We'll never know what kind of queen charlotte would've been.
This is sad 😢 I cried 😭😭
After I watched your "Kings and Queens of Britain" series, I was really hoping you'd make a Charlotte episode. I never heard of her and looked her up and gosh what a sad story! Thanks for sharing Princess Charlotte's legacy!
Beautiful painting......thank you so much .Good history. God bless..
Oh my god! I'm so happy you realized this video! I've been really interested in her lately
Thank You Lindsay!❤
Ooh this one promises to be somber :’)
have a nice week!
Let me just say that I have mad respect for you, Lindsay! You really got me interested in history, and I've learned more in your history 'classes' then in real life ones in school! You're incredible, and keep up the amazing work! Would you be interested in doing a video about the history of medicine, medical school, etc. ?
Yes
Great video! I'm excited for your video air Carlottq of Mexico. I think she lived to about 1920, many, many years after her expedition in Mexico. Cant wait to watch!
been watching your videos for 5 years now. love your videos so much
So sad You wonder?
What might have been? She was so young Twenty one not an age to go You only are just starting out in life at 21. The partnership you put into these videos.Lindsay just amazes me thank you
she and leopold is my favorite historical figure. she had an unhappy childhood, and then she having a happy marriage which she waited a long time for just died a year later.
Charlotte sounds wonderful ❤
She was more fun than Victoria.
Thank you Lindsay for making a video on Princess Charlotte, her story is not told often enough!!! It's truly tragic, she was so brilliant and a woman beyond her time. I've already watched 3 times x
God Bless Princess Charlotte of Wales.
So sweet & gorgeous child. 👸💖😊💍💐🌹
Daaaang, Leopold was a looker! I never saw that picture of him before, no wonder Charlotte was charmed!
His family was notorious for producing some of the best looking men of the era. Albert, his brother Ernst, their cousin Ferdinand were all famously gorgeous and VERY popular with the ladies. Albert and Ferdinand married two of the most powerful women of the time (Victoria and Maria, queen of Portugal) and Ernst was a notorious playboy all over Europe.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Very sad story, but extremely informative. Many of the Royals from years past have had such tragic lives.
YESSS I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR MY GORGEOUS EMPRESS CARLOTTA!! but also rip princess charlotte😢
If your father is given the nickname "Henry IX", then all that "Sorrows, sorrows, prayers." is nothing more than the exceptional creativity of Shonda Rhimes.
She has a rather vivid "imagination".
Thank you for your video Lindsay
This is a reason why a c section is needed, as it is the only safe presager that can be done if complications like this happen as they have been done since ancient times, so if that had been done there is some chance both might have been saved. Her father was a real piece of work and so was his mistress. If she and the baby had survived, I still think Queen Victoria and her bloodline would still have existed since there wouldn't have been much guarantee on how long Charlotte and her child would have live in a general sense. Either way I'm sure Charlotte and Leopold would have been great rulers and things would have turned out a lot better in so many ways if things had been different.
Princess Charlotte is such a tragic figure in history.
Charlotte I think would've supported women rights.
Juana of Castile: tell me about it
I've waited for a video on Charlotte for so long! This was so interesting I loved it!
I’ve read about and heard the story of Princess Charlotte so many times before , but this is the first time that it made me seriously tear up. Another wonderful video from you, thank you 🫶🏽
Makes me grateful that childbirth has become so much safer for those of us lucky enough to have improved care. But sad for women around the world who don’t
A different method probably could've saved her if they had tried it.
So sad! Thank you for these videos, they help prevent my brain from turning into mush during maternity leave
thank you lindsay for always posting amazing content always. been watching your videos for 5 years now💟💟💟
Princess Charlotte is the spitting image of Susannah Harker, who played Jane Bennet in the “Pride and Prejudice” miniseries (1995).
I think they might have chosen Susannah Harker for that role, because she very much fit the beauty ideal of that time.
People like to complain that in the 1995 adaptation, Lizzy was actually prettier than Jane, but in Regency times, this Jane would have been considered superior in looks.
Thank you so much for sharing this story. You had me captivated and I felt so sad for her
Outstanding as always.
I was waiting for this video
Omg I’ve been hoping you would cover Princess Charlotte for so long now
Sorrows sorrows prayers
This story had me captivated, I’m surprised I’ve never heard of her.
I love your videos so much. ❤❤❤
Charlotte died, so Victoria could exist.
More like Charlotte walked so Victoria could run
Not funny
You are not wrong. Victoria literally exists cause Charlotte died. She was the replacement.
The poem about her was absolutely beautiful!
I think king George iii should have let his daughters to marry when they were able to have children.
That had more to do with their mother. She was reluctant to have her daughters marry. Those who did marry did it when they were unlikely to have children and literally had to beg Queen Charlotte to allow it.
@@ladyv5655 we have to remember that George III had mental health challenges when he was older, he was no fit state to approve anything, his wife was the one stifling her daughters ability to wed and have children of their own
@@ladyv5655 also had to do with George's madness and problems. He had seen women married to foreign princes who had a miserable life. but the princesses nearly all seem to have managed to find a husband or lover.
@@truetory6231
George III was not mad, he suffered from Porphyria. Porphyria is not a "mental illness". Porphyria is a defect in the metabolism of red blood cell molecules, responsible for transporting oxygen. One of its symptoms is suffering from hallucinations and mental confusion, among many other ailments, hence the belief, at the time, that the king was mad. Today it is a disease that can be managed with medication.
I have it as well.
It was QUEEN CHARLOTTE who didn’t allow them to get married
Thank you so much for uploading these videos!❤❤😊❤❤😊 I'm so curious about her and exciting this too!

Been waiting for this one since you announced it! Love lotte so much! Thanks For all your hardwork lindsay! Your content is MUCH supperior to all those AI documentaries out there. Have you thought of doing a video on her husband Leopold i of belgium?🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The Princess Charlotte of Wales couldn't be the Queen.
But sometimes I wonder what if our present Princess Charlotte of Wales ends up ascending the throne :D
You never know how the future takes turns!
@@jamiemohan2049 "The handsomest prince in Europe" was Leopold's reputation in the salons and ballrooms all over the continent, not just in the royal marriage market. However, by the time he became a king in 1831, he was older and less happy.
What a tragic story.
The princess with the heart and soul of a King!
I almost cried watching this.... I feel so bad for the doctor aswell 😢😢😢😢😢 charlottes death truly changed the course of history

charlotte and her life sounds so much like a book character! she would make an amazing heroine. so tragic how her life ended.
Oooo, I'm excited for next week.
Sue me, I will go down holding on to my belief that Mexico missed out, BIG time, when our so-called "patriotic heroes" killed Emperor Maximilian.
And my heart always breaks for Empress Charlotte.
Looking forward to your input on it all !
I 100% agree. The Mexican Empire was going to be magnificent. I’ve seen the emperor’s plans for many things including the Imperial Mexican Railway, what a heavy loss for us 🇲🇽
I just have to say that Wedding Dress was beautiful
Id love if you could make a video of these “queens who never were” like women who were close to inherit the throne but either for the birth of a brother or anything else they couldn’t
My dear niece 😢
A beautiful princess gone too soon. Can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if she lived.
I Love, can u make a video about John of gaunt

It was so horrendously cruel to keep her separate from her mother. George didn't need to love or even like his wife, but he had no right to keep a mother from her child.
