- Let's see what we can learn from a radio-ready pop production like Glass Animals - Heat Waves. In this video we'll deconstruct the beat, the music theory, the sound design and composition and the arrangement together! I use Ableton Live in this video, but the same concepts apply in any DAW!
The original song: • Glass Animals - Heat W...

can we hear a little bit of the song you are imitating?
the name of the song?
before you start?
I love these videos on tune breakdowns and love even more that you're not restricting them to dance. There's a lot to learn from different genres, including pop, whether you like them or not. As you've said yourself before, don't restrict yourself to one type of music. Another top tut 👌
I've studied music, am a trained musician, and am signed to a record label. I still watch your channel because its always got something good and useful !
Awesome 🤗
This was fucking brilliant!! Not just one of those "how to recreate ____ beat" but you actually broke the song down in detail and I learned so much. Would love love love love to see more pop song breakdowns like this.
this was immensely informative! seriously one of my favorite production channels on youtube
This is soooo good, so different from every other Music Production videos on UA-cam. You take so much time to dig deep into details, and vulgarize everything so well. Learned a bunch, thank you so much, and please keep going because these videos are awesome.
I really really like where this channel is going in terms of topics!
this is incredible! i’d love to see a vid on another glass animals song !!
Love that you don't limit just to one genre. Brilliant content! Thanks
yet another fantastic video, thank you Oscar! My dream is to write really catchy pop songs yet I always end up making some dance music instead, this gives a lot of inspiration! Have a good time with your family you legend!
The tutorials were so good I watched them even though I'm not into Techno/house - you got me to start listening to some Techno! But super happy to see you delve into the world of pop/indie that I'm more into. Thanks for this!
Fantastic stuff. My favourite breakdown so far. Learning a lot, thanks!
Best regards for the family! It's always great to have a new Underdog video
They say hi back :D
As usual, one of the best video tutorials out there. Keep it up!
More pop stuff please. It's fresh!
Pow!
I love also when you break down tunes, very instructive and well explained. Un grand Merci!
Big up Oscar! So important so get inspired by other genres! Thank you for the amazing work once again!
I love glass animals 😍
Fun, interesting and relevant... Bien joué. 👏
He even teaches us when on vacation.
fckin Legend.
I love how you break down all kinds of songs and make them really digestable. As someone completely new to music this has been a super enjoyable series as it really makes music production more tangible and fun. And I found some new music through your breakdowns! ;)
I really enjoyed this type of video! Great deconstruction!
I love the care taken to go in-depth - extremely helpful! Thank you! It could be interesting to check out a breakdown of Grandson. While he uses lots of guitar, he balances electronic elements with rock in an extremely interesting way. Some of my favorites are We Did It and Dirty!
Amazing :) I love the song too, so it was a pleasure
This is such an unbelievably useful video
Amazing content! This is one of my favorite videos. Incredibly helpful. Especially the music theory! Thank you! So appreciated!
This is a great format for a video: recreating tracks and production choices you like. I don't make this kind of music, but I found this very helpful!
Thank you so much, incredibly helpful tutorial!
Thank you for Sharing.
Learned something and also Got Introduced to Glass Animals.
Cheers
do more breakdowns!! i love this video
Agree with the others. Great one. Thanks for the deep dive.
ur content is just awesome, with ur vids only i came from 0 production experience to actual production
I love this song and this video was both entertaining and informative. You have earned my subscription good sir!
This channel is a hidden gem.
Oh my god I want your final version of this SO BAD
Oscar, there's a really good free VST called Ample Guitar. Try it out
Thanks for that idea!
I really like the reverb of that kitchen. Next time you are home grab a pulse signature.
This is probably my favorite tutorial, the chord progression part was especially helpful. Thank you!
Glad to hear this :)
Great deal. Such high quality. So much praise!=
It’s been a year.
This song’s still in my head…
But thank you so much for making this analysis
This Album is Dope!!!! Very Emotive Songs... Love it!!! Thank You for the Decon!!!!! Yeahhhhh I hope you’ve chosen of their sweet songs!!!!😜😜🔥🔥👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

This is Awesome. Please break down the song Ghost Keeper by Klangkarussell and GIVVEN next. It has some super interesting sound design.
Very very helpful and great video, thank you (:
Loved it ❤️
Thanks Harsha :D
I like Glass Animals, hate this particular song, and love your videos. Truly the best music production tutorials out there, always very accessible yet still detailed 👌🏼
My favourite Glass Animals song is Life Itself, so check that out if you're into them!
Really like the diversity here, I think as music lovers we can all appreciate good music whatever the genre is, and it's always interesting to see how something is constructed even if only to serve as an example of what to avoid ;)
Suggestions for other tracks to deconstruct:
- MGMT - Little Dark Age (is also well known and kind of indie pop)
- Jesper Ryom - Trivia (he has a very unique style and this one is a real banger)
- C2C - Delta (no words needed)
Thanks for all the great content!
do you like helium?
fully supporting your channel
Your family in Ireland! What up cuz?! ☘️🇮🇪

@@OscarUnderdog 😊💜🙏🏼
thank you
so awesomeeee
Cool stuff Oscar, love it! (although I am not a music producer in any way)
I'm an Underpuppy now. I just need to actually start making music again.
I have that feeling like I am almost where I want to be.
Thanks so much for the inspiration!
I’ve always wanted a good break down of a glass animals track
I would love to hear a break down of a track from Odezsa
@@jasonsherman3708 shit yeah! Great idea
Please deconstruct any of Yello (from Switzerland), like Call It Love. Their beats and all the details are amazing
Yes please these guys are gods
EPIC!
Great video! Love how you dissected in great detail. And great that you're in Ireland (or were). Greetings from a Dutch guy living in Ireland!
Ireland - this makes me happy! Hi from Waterford. 😊
Cheers from Clonakilty in Cork :D
hi from Rochestown - Cork 😀😀
@@OscarUnderdog I'd jump up if you made a deconstruction of Speak Lord by Sculptured Music (Chymamusique Remix)
Not a fan of that song at all, but definitely want to see what you say about it. Weirdly, at the weekend i was with a couple from Kilkerranmore which is quite close to where you are in County Cork. Weird.
Wow, it's mad that we're on the same island right now.
Greetings from Belfast :D
💚🌈✌🤗
3:35 wouldn't be more efficient and controled to just cut the sample in the simpler's window?
Thank you for the wonderful video! I learned a lot, as I usually do from your videos =)
What kind of headphones are those that you're using in the video, and are they ones you would recommend? Thanks again, I love your videos!
Aleej Manneke!
Welcome back to the emerald isle 👍
The water is COLD!
Oh wowww thanks for introducing to glass animal heat wave . Thanks Oscar for video such great teacher you are love & respect for you man. Producer listen that song that has some cool things to learn on guitar paning and mixing. I guess with ample lite 2 (its free vst ) and guitar rig you can achieve and need some basic chorus and verb and delay . And one more thing i like in that song is harmonies and there placements in stereo field. Amazing.
lovely and helpful video! and I really like a video about how to make a jamie xx track!
Ooooooofffffffff yeah, he's the king though, so ambitious :D
@@OscarUnderdog yeahhhhh!!! it would be Great
awesome baldy keep it up, we are hungry :)
👌
❤❤❤
cats love it
Cool cats know 😺
Analysing one of the recent planetary assault system tracks would be cool.
100% agreed. Thanks for prompting that. Any particular track in mind?
@@OscarUnderdog Euhm. Bolt, bang wap or labstract. It's mainly that wall of unstructured, random sounds that actually is structured and well organized. 😅 Crazy sound layers, surprising longs effects that become background sounds and organic sound design. It's always the same and always different at the same time. So many variations of one simple loop.
Nice :-)
Would love for you to go in to the vocals. I feel it is really the hardest part for me
Amazing breakdown. Can you do an Aaliyah song?
Lov u
Lov u 2 boo
Took the time to G33k with us! And I know I appreciate it even though I still get hung up on triads, chords and some other theory.
i swear when i make it big ima give a shoutout to you
24:45 That small segment sounds familiar. Is this a very common sequence, because I get a suspicion that it's referencing a song from the '80s for contextual meaning. Do song makers drop eastereggs like other media makers? I'm struggling to remember which exact song at this time, but it was certainly on the radio constantly.
I feel that I'm listening to Smalltown Boy from Bronski Beat, but a few octaves lower and slower....🙄
It's nice to see traditional Chinese furniture
13:14 - why did you choose to put the sixth note of the bassline an octave below in regards to the chordprogression?
Do Max Martin if you like!
Yo are you Irish? Your accent is weird for an Irishman.
Edit: Thank you so much for this video ! Learnt a lot. Can you do one of these for Aphex Twin?
I am currently struggling with a mindboggling (for me) duo of questions: In a techno track that may be played at raves, how do you make waves of sound, usually during breaks (i dont really know how to explain it otherwise)?; and how to play live at an event (not really about crowd reading, but what you actually do - like fades)?
Thank you!
(This is abit of a long explanation for a simple thing but i like to waste time)
I’m from Ireland and i didn’t even know he was connected to Ireland, but i think it’s easier to just speak in standard english rather than in one of the Irish accents because “tis quare difficult to understand sure it is” with every town having its own accent with its own little spin on the regional dialect. For an international audience its crucial for the host to be understandable so i think he probably just dials it down for the videos and dials it back up for family.
What type of system are you using?
I've been using guitar tabs website for years and I never knew there was a piano view for chords...
best tutorial! can you share the ableton file?
I would love to see you take a look at a progressive house song such as Time Stood Still or Moments by Roald Velden, anything by Shingo Nakamura, Mango, Talamanca, or Blood Groove & Kikis (to name a few). The genre is more or less out of style now so it's tough to find any sort of production resources for it, but the sound is super unique and beautiful.
I've added it to my list to investigate!
What part of Ireland?
U forgot the G tone in D#?
You should do other genres to show your viewers how all music is the same and we can use all as inspiration. I think rock n roll has so much in common with techno arrangement for an example.
Ahhh great point!
That was a very useful video, but I would not recommend that way of determining a key to anyone. There are far too many songs using notes outside of the key in their chords, including electronic musicians like Ben Böhmer. I would also argue this song is really in C# dorian.
