    Best Take away for me is Building portfolio around one fund. And for me, that is Hybrid Aggressive fund. I now realized this after investing for 7-8 years. I wish somebody told me this 8 years ago.

    Pattu: I can't entirely agree with you on a few points. (1) Three years is not a magic number but we have to go with the sectoral cycles. (2) Some funds don't perform for a few years due to buy and hold of some sectors so one should remain invested and keep investing then ultimately after five years or so each sector having seen years of neglect, eventually outperform. So we have to see the fundamental problem as to why that fund is not performing, is it complete neglect by the fund manager or a problem with the sector. If there is a problem with that sector only then it's a good news as one is buying cheap. So patience is the key. (3) sometimes, fund managers invest in 2-3 such sectors where one is doing good and the other is doing bad so the net result is that you don't see the gains moving anywhere even though one of the sectors of the fund is doing good. I have one such fund, which was suggested by my former fund manager (regular fund). At that time, I didn't have any knowledge and I left it to him. It has a locking period of 60 years of age otherwise, 1 % exit load and returns not more than 7 %. So when I examined it, I found that the stock selection is not bad but IT companies they invested in are ruining any gains made by other good companies. So net results is always bad. So the "activeness" of the fund manager to timely exit the sector before it peaks out and move to a new promising sector is very important to choose an active fund. Otherwise, the savings are going to be doomed. With Parag Parikh Flexi cap etc. same problem happened. It gave good returns on digital boom but they didn't foresee its peak coming and didn't exit. So no sector is good or bad. Here timing is important. If you have chosen one sector then it's best to stick to it for good and see it's cycle. Mixing good and bad sectors is toxic. Its like you are mixing sin and cosine waves. :) (4) I don't agree with your aversion with small caps. One has to show trust in small Indian companies also otherwise we are overconcentrating the top 50 companies whether they perform or not. Of course, one needs a smart fund manager to pick good small caps. (5) Peaks are valleys are the real strength of small caps which gives us opportunity like "time machine" where one can go back in time and invest cheap.

    Excellent video, I kind of agree that you dont need too many funds. Minimalist approach works better. However I disagree on point number 5.2, Manual investing has freedom and thats what I feel is a problem for lot of people. Because if you give freedom people may not invest if they see other expenses popping up. I feel and kind of has worked in my case, Following option:
    1. Put SIP in MF
    2. Whenever you have extra money left put that into your MF via lumpsum route.
    That has helped in increasing my corpus leaps and bounds and whenever I look at my fund value 3-4 years later, I see very well what I have gained by not only sticking to SIP but also investing manually in same funds.

    Thanks for video. Question on why do you think current time is Right to invest for goal 10-15yr away? PE ratios are all time high. Also, simple returns calculation tells me that if somebody invested lumpsum around December 2017 hardly get 7% returns today...so then doesn't timing matter?

    thanks for sharing your lessons. I have been seeing your videos for a while now, its very useful. I have a question and pardon my ignorance how monthly investment manually is better than SIP since you also mentioned its not abt market timing. what advantage we have in manual investing over sip

    • @pattufreefincal
      @pattufreefincal  5 років тому +6

      I can change the monthly investment at will and I want to stop investing for a few months because of higher expenses , there is no commitment to a single fund (which is the biggest advantage imo). If there is only one fund, there is it not an advantage but most of have at least a couple and say one is large cap and one is mid cap, I can invest more in mid caps when they are down. Whether this is better or not is secondary imo. I have the freedom to so do. The point is that distributors and AMCs sound as if stopping SIPs is a crime because of conflict of interest. All that said, if some wants to keep their SIps running, it does not matter much as anyway they too much learn to manage risk

    • @koshyoommen4782
      @koshyoommen4782 5 років тому +1

      It's not a demotivation. These are some realities we will face as we move ahead. We are an emerging economy now no longer a developing one. So all the immense growth you saw in the past will not be exactly replicated in the future. There is going to be slow down and we need to plan with enough buffer. All that matters is are you disappointed at the end? If you do not want to be, then it's better to be a little disappointed now and invest as much as you can. You can choose your strategy but with the baseline that Pattu suggests. Focus on the asset allocation, well and enough diversification, lesser risk and the target corpus.
