TheFunkyair the difference on the track and drag stop between them is incredibly small and can go either way... So really both are equally fast. In that respect the better car comes down to personal preference.

As a BMW fan who actually owns and drives BMWs, who has seen with his own eyes that the E63 AMG S is faster on a straight line (not tracked), will admit both these cars are legendary powerhouse German saloons. These 2 cars are very close in my opinion track is based on the driver not the actual vehicle, even though BMW have had better track performance cars in the past. These two cars are almost identical.
Finally a track comparison and not just a drag race :)
Not sure why everyone’s talking about the tires. These are the tires that the manufacturer has chosen to sell their car with, end of.
That's a valid observation, but people are specifically pointing that out because the M5 is also available with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Actually, it was presented with them not the Pirellis.
Kaisuke971 I have no issue with agreeing that the tires can make a difference which conveys that both are neck in neck and are equally as fast as each other.... But the issue is that had the BMW won you know very well yourself that you wouldn't be talking about the tire difference.

I’m a mature BMW fanboy and will say these two beautiful German machines are both super quick, the E63 is just a bit quicker straight line and will admit that, track driving my opinion comes down to the driver as both these cars are just sooo close in tech and added goodies.

The Truth - sadly most BMW fanboys are kids just like hooligans at a football match, they don’t own a BMW and just watch some BMW sponsored videos on UA-cam and base their opinion over that. In saying that I respect the 3 main German marquees Mercedes and Audi as well as BMW as this is what makes it more interesting everyday knowing a rival will come and make a car to match that of the E63 or M5 now waiting on Audi’s RS6-RS7 platform, it’s always about one will bring out a car quicker and more brutal and then vice versa and the long battled saga between these 3 giants will go on!!!

People need to understand that the difference between the E63S and "normal" E63 is not the same with the difference between the M5 and M5 CP.
The S AMG has slightly more power, drift mode and some other options that don't have to do with the performance of the car, but with luxury. On the other hand the M5 CP is more track focused than the M5, it has more power and some weight shaved from the body. Another point is the price which is the nearly the same for the M5 and E63 S. All in all this comparison is fair for both cars.
Sergio - this mean the E63S has been or has to be downgraded to base since it's comparable to base M5...AMG have to come up with rivals to CP and CS

I used to have an M5. Didn't like the F10 so I skipped that and now I'd go with an E63 S. Not because it is .1 seconds faster here, but because I like the design better, the interior quality is much higher, and the interior sound is absolutely 'bonkers' as you brits would say.
I couldn't disagree more. Have you seen the trim BMW sells as Carbon Fiber in the new M5? It's a joke. The two red M buttons look hideous, the gear lever looks and feels crap too. In reality, I know BMW is saving money under Reithofer so it's no surprise you see the result in these cars.

the PZ4s are Pirelli's latest tyre. They have a softer compound than the michelin 4s. They would definitely be a stickier tyre on a dry surface. The Michelins are much better in the rain. The E63S and the M5 both come with the Michelin 4S or the new Pirelli PZ4s. Manufactures wouldn't put them on if they affected the performance of the car. 0.1 tenth of a second is nothing. These cars are a coin flip any single day. Better driver takes whatever you do with them. Never seen cars so comparable in terms of performance.
If I was given a choice between these two I would pick the M5. That thing is gorgeous.
I'm a mercedes fanboy, i love the E63s, it is an insane car, but i do have to give credit to the beemer, its doing bits, 0.1s is pretty much a tie, these two are so close together in terms of performance its as if bmw and Mercedes worked together to make them. Now normally me as a fanboy i would say the merc came out a year before so maybe bmw used the same tech? but ill let you all in the comments argue that lol
But the M5 and E63 compete not the M5 vs the E63S
Dont forget, even the 5.5 m157 amg motor from previous gen E63/CLS63 is also far more reliable. For that reaosn alone id even choose one of those over the new M5 as well.
It seems like the suspension of the M5 is set up to be quiet a bit softer than the E63's (you can clearly see how much more body it has, not just here, but in other comparison videos as well), it's very obvious that they've left room for the Competition Package in this area.....
Still though, it has a CFRP roof and a bunch of carbon bits in the drivetrain as well + it has a bigger, thirstier(according to both EPA and NEDC) engine, starting price is almost identical, and it's the newer car too, so no valid excuses for camp BMW this time around....
I wish they would stop comparing the regular M5 to the E63 "S". Can we just wait until the M5 Competition Package come out?

cristian since this "test" the m5 has beaten the E63S in every test, drag, circuit everything. Clearly the M5 is a better car. The reviewer in this test is always negative biased against BMW, so no surprise regarding this tests outcome.
the problem is that I saw a test where the E 63 beat the M5 hands down!
It amazes me how these two beast stack up to each other. so closely matched in strengths. when all is said and done, it comes down to personality and preference. The M5 is beautiful, but I'm an undying Benz fan... E63 any day.

I switched from some P Zero's to Pilot Sport 4 S's on my XF S a few months back. The Michelin's blow the Pirelli's away. Better grip, roll, feedback and stopping distance. Do the test again but this time with both on the Michelin's. I don't know why these sites even bother with these comparisons without matching these things first.

Imagine the AMG GT 63s or the E63s Facelift. Those will probably come out before/at the same time as the Competition . The E class was at market since 2016 so the facelift is due 2019-2020. Probably around the time the Competition comes. They will probably take a Year to put this out. The M2 Competition came out 3 years after the original M2

If you haven’t owned an AMG you won’t understand how they bring out a whole other personality from you , easiest way I can put it is “Clark Kent - Superman” I love the M cars but other than the M3/M4 do the rest really look that special from the original models ? As is the exterior and that’s coming from someone who has bought only BMWs for 10years. The Merc is just much more upmarket in appearance. BMW designers have truly lost their way in terms of car designs

So happy the Merc won, even though its only by a tiny margin! Considering that it weights more than the M5 and it managed to use that extra power and torque to win, it is amazing.
Its all down to the Driver aswell really how fast u can shift through the gears etc I would prefer the M5 but both brilliant cars
I was recently shopping for a Das Uber Interstate Cruiser, I had narrowed my search down to a used E63 and the F10 M5. I decided on the M5 mostly because I started hearing about rear main seal issues with the S63. My friend is a tech at the local Mercedes dealership, he alerted me to the problem. I did not want to believe him, I went to the AMG boards and found a whole thread on the subject. The problem is real. Now, the M5 is supposed to be prone to rod bearing failures. I started to look into that, it seems I can avoid that problem with a con rod bearing update costing around $4k. For now? I sent my first oil change during my ownership to Blackstone labs for analysis. My first report came back stellar. I have only owned my M5 for 3 months now, it is a fantastic machine.
We are fortunate to live in a world where we have such potent super saloons. E63S and M5 are absolute gems, hard to separate the two. It will all come down to personal preference; if I had the money I'd buy both (E63S Estate). Keen to see more drag races alongside track times.
of course, this is in line with the CARWOW's review of the two cars. E63s is the king in MB as well as the german autos.
So this means the new M5 competition package will smoke the e63s any day. It’s funny how they never use a new regular e63 in any video Vs the new regular M5. 🤔

The Germans with the F90 M5 and E63 4matic+ have given us a topic to debate on for years! I personally think to settle this one. We'd have to see a head to head between the base E63 and the M5 in their best configurations and tyres, then also see a head to head between E63s and the M5 comp pack in their best tyres and configs. Maybe this test should be done by Chris Harris/ Motor Trend or both.

LOL...It's funny how people make such a BIG DEAL of "laptimes," when it doesn't necessary prove one car's performance capabilities over another. DRIVER SKILLS can significantly affect a car's laptime. Even when the same driver is doing all the test runs, he/she can make a mistake while approaching a corner, at any given moment, since the margin for error is greater when driver around a track compared to doing so in a straight line.

So the Bmw M5 is 2 years newer, it weighs 100kg less than the E63S and still cannot beat the AMG.
***Not mentioning the dyno test that shows that BMW lied about the numbers and that M5 actually has 625hp+.
look at other videos on youtube and the m5 beats the E63 AMG dont base it on one video and beside winning by 100th of a second is nothing to brag about that could come down to driver error
Sergio DE it has on the pirelli p zeros not the optional pilot sport 4s. Motor trend just tested the m5 is .2 seconds faster around the figure 8 and stops from 60-0 18 feet shorter. Tires make a huge difference. So yes the e63 beat the m5 but only because it was on the lesser of tires

These both cars are amazing. If you have anyone of them you can’t go wrong. Even if one may have a sec on the other, the numbers are almost identical. I love Benz, but the bmw is an amazing car as well.

Kaisuke971 yupe. The P zeros cant match the Ps4s in every aspect. Tested them back to back same car same track and the ps4s are grippier, quieter, more comfortable. Wet or dry.
I don't get people complaining about the BMW being more understated. All M5s and indeed all M cars - apart from the monstrous E60 - have been understated. It's a crucial part of what makes M cars so special. Slightly flared arches and bigger wheels and that's it. AMGs are like American football players - all shoulder pads and knee pads and look massive - M cars are like rugby players - no need for any padding.
Interesting that the E63s, in the reviewers own words, "just" edges past the M5. The Merc here is a an S model with more power while the M5 Competition Pack is yet to be released. For the standard M5 to do that well against the E63s is fantastic. I'm an AMG guy through and through but BMWs always keep you on your toes

What matters is that this was not a tie, the e63 won, although with a small margin, it doesn't invalidate the race
Winning a Pole Position is something entirely different than winning a Race (in the real world), no matter what a fictitious character in a movie says. The Merc got a faster laptime in ONE lap which to me does not prove that it's a faster track car. A drag race is something entirely different nowadays with awd and launch control. 9 out of 10 times would give the same result if raced on the same day. But really, one thenth in one lap... Cmon, I do like the E63S a lot, but it only proves that these cars are equally matched in fact.

It's a shame for year old e63s to be 0.01s faster to a base model this proves that M division is ahead of AMG..so the e63s has been downgraded to a base if it compares to a base (base v base) then the normal e63 for 550 series...M5 CP coming this summer then later a CS ...AMG have no clue how to react...M division are benchmakers others follow
At this point and this level of tech they're essentially identical cars. It all comes down to preference on looks & luxury & feel. Personally I'd pick the M5, just because I like how it looks.

There will be and the competition won't be the bigger dog the biggest dog will be the M5 CSL and even more insane M8 CSL grand coupe and yes those are actually a name BMW announced those name plates
So yeah by the time those are announced we will have the AMG GT 63S on the road and the E63s Facelift will probably be there too with even more power and performance. Just accept it. BMW is behind on this one. Normally the newer Car beats the older cars from the competition was always this way between Merc, BMW and Audi. It is the first time a new Car is beaten by the older competitor.

What are you talking about. The M8 isn´t murdering any Merc. The AMG GT 63S AMG will be the direct competitor and it will be as dynamic as the AMG GT so it will kill BMW on every track and it will get a Top Version with close to 800hp and a Hybrid. But even the 639hp standard GT 63s will kill any BMW just like in any other category currently

I think both those cars beast!!! I'm a big BMW fan, but have to say respect for MB. I drove E amg 2 week ago. It's just crazy. Nezt week testdrive M5. But I already know what I choose. M5. BMW has something that toucht my heart more.

Dont make a car a winner when the difference in time is 0.01 that much of a difference can be changed by just a change of drivers or tires ect lol basically this video is a tie and it falls on which one visually suits you

Benz owner for years…must say tho…I respect both. Even within the S, I feel it would be an even match. Cleary you can see there’s someone else with eye glasses driving at different times.

Why everybody compare e63s(!) to m5?
You should do m5 and e63, or wait, until BMW made a competition version of bmw m5 to compadre it with the Mercedes e63s version.
2 amazing machines! But I like the looks of the 5 better. C and S Class are beautiful, but the E just doesn't look right to me

The Truth yeah i saw the two other tests i am 100% sure that the E63s is faster cuz the numbers of this car are out of this world
