Dan Devine's thoughts and memories show the real reason why sports can be so transcendently important to us all. The obvious message: It's more than just a game. Wonderful footage, and I'm not even a Mizzou fan.

Norris Stevenson and Clay Cooper were both great men in my book. Just listening to Devine and Onofrio recount that great win in Norman years later sends chills down my back. So many of the men from that era aren't with us any longer. I want all of their relatives and all other Missouri fans to know that we haven't forgotten...we will never forget. More importantly, we will be thankful for what they did and for the legacy they left. God bless everyone of them and Go Mizzou!

Thank you so much for your kind and heartfelt comments regarding my late father, Clay Cooper, and the other fine men, like Dan Devine and Al Onofrio, who were his colleagues. It is for folks like you, who remember and appreciate those outstanding Missouri players and coaches from that era, that I post these videos. The Tiger players from that time were not only great football players, they became responsible and accomplished men who contributed to the greater good of society.

    Kash-
Thank you for for compliments on my late father, Clay Cooper. FWIW, I agree with your comment about MU history and tradition. We may not have the "flash" of a USC or the NCs of Nebraska or Alabama, but we have a proud tradition, with many successes over our 122 year history and wins over ALL the traditional college football powers including Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas etc.

Well said 54Snickers. You are exactly right about the Missouri men from that era. I have personally known many former players from those teams and it is clear that the coaches and staff taught them life lessons...they were hard working guys of character. They were also people who were intensely loyal to each other and to Mizzou. Thanks for posting the videos...they are truly appreciated.

Thank you for your kind compliments of my Dad, Clay Cooper. He was a "Tiger through and through." With the exception of a couple of years teaching and coaching in Joplin and service during WWII, he spent his entire career at Mizzou. He would have liked to stay on and serve MU in some capacity after Powers left, but Widenhoefer and AD Dave Hart, two of the worst in the history of Mizzou sports, didn't have the foresight and "smarts" to retain him, so he retired. Thanks again!

54Snickers .. yes correct.. till Coach Bob Stull with good assistant coaches (Chiefs coach Reid) and the problem was not so well recruited as blue chips. Later Coach Larry Smith started better program. Then Coach Pinkel improved as the key was QB Brad Smith then Chas Daniel....

John Barkley... Dwz just got good recruits recently.. and possible big time in 2022....

54Snickers I think Clay Cooper got Roger Wehrli (Uniform) #22 when Roger was at MSHSAA state track meeting at Columbia (maybe I m wrong) in 1965 then Coach Dan D met him bit later. Bless Clay to find him. One of the best Big8 defense, then he #23 played for St. Louis Big Red and then he is NFL Hall of Fame induce.

Your dad was a great Tiger and a hell of a nice guy. My favorite Clay Cooper story is how he took control of the program after Al was fired and before Warren started. He landed a great recruiting class for a team without a head coach.

john barkley about Dan Devine and Dwz.. Dan had defense mind (early 1960 defense line was somewhat alike BRICK WALL) Dwz has offense mind. Both I have nothing against.. of course, I was so excited when Dwz was hired.. ( if stay in Big 12 possible championship in few years from now??? )

Bob-Thanks for your message. Always nice to hear from Clay's old players. My late mother kept everything related to my Dad's coaching career, including media guides, programs, articles etc. From that vast archive of material, I found that some of your 1959 freshman teammates included Andy Russell, Bob Neuman, Tom Hertz and Daryl Krugman. You were a QB from Centerville, Iowa correct? Unfortunately, Fanbase is apparently no longer maintained, so the photos that I uploaded can't be accessed.

54Snickers During my high school year my first Mizzou game against Buffs and won. That was very early 1960s and never forget that game. Also MU lost to KU as lost number ranking 1 in very same year. One game against Colo Buffs Famous 5th down saved Colo to staying number 1 ranking. Still love MIZZOU football no matter what !!!!!

Can't find your Dad's page that you referenced. I'd love to see those old Mizzou football photos you mentioned from those early 60's teams. Your dad was the coach (along with Tom Fletcher) of the Freshman Team I was on in 1959.

1960's and 70's were truely, truely great i have faith that pinkel will bring the crystal ball to columbia and get us our first undisputed national title we have the history and the lime light to get it done here because of what faurot and devine did a half century ago

It was excerpted from a 1990 VHS video cassette put together to commemorate the 100th year of Missouri football. I think the entire contents of that old VHS tape is now available on UA-cam.

    Kash-
I'm 57, so I "cut my teeth" on Missouri football during the 1960s, the most successful decade in MU football history. You should check out my Dad's page pm Fanbase.com I uploaded many old photos, including some of Johnny Roland. Once you're on the website, just do a search for Clay Cooper, Johnny Roland, or any other player you might be interested in.
