  • Part 1 of the 1972 Missouri University football highlight film narrated by Hall of Fame announcer, Jack Buck. Missouri was coming off one its worst seasons ever in 1971, with a 1-10 record in Al Onofrio's first year. After a promising start with wins over Oregon and Cal, Missouri was manhandled by Nebraska 62-0, with a game against 7th ranked Notre Dame in South Bend looming the next week. MU stunned the Irish and the college football world by upsetting ND 30-26. The TIgers followed that win with another incredible upset, beating 9th ranked Colorado in Columbia for Homecoming. These wins earned MU the nickname "The Giant Killers of College Football. One of the most remarkable seasons in Missouri football history.

Your Father was one of the best recruiters and evaluators of talent to ever coach at Mizzou. He never got the credit in that area that he deserved. A very good man.

Thank you, Bruce. I appreciate your kind comments about Clay. That was a great coaching staff; one that included your Dad, Charlie. Assistant coaches often don't get the credit they deserve. Hard to believe that both men are gone. As I recall, you lost your Mom, Nancy, a few years ago. Please accept my condolences. She was a great lady. Long time since we last spoke. I hope you're well. Retired? Working? Let's catch up sometime.

Convenient how the loss to the Huskers was glossed over without the score (62-0). This made the victory over the Irish even more astounding.

Glad you enjoyed it. I, too, listened to the ND game on the radio. The KCMO broadcast with Bruce Rice doing the play-by-play.

Well true, but it is a Missouri HIGHLIGHT film and the 62-0 loss was definitely the LOWLIGHT of the '72 season for Missouri. The road win over ND the following week was indeed shocking. The Irish were a Top 10 team coming into that game. The win in South Bend was followed by a Homecoming win the following week over Colorado, yet another Top 10 team at the time. Missouri quickly became know as the "giant killers" of college football during the early-mid 1970s.

RIght, defense was the top priority. My father coached with Onofrio and always fought to get the best athletes on defense.

The Missouri teams of the 1970s were Giant Killers. Mizzou beat Notre Dame up there in South Bend in their 1978 season opener.

Very true. Warren Powers took over from Al Onofrio in 1978. His first game at Mizzou was that 3-0 upset over defending national championship ND. Previously, during Onofrio's tenure (1971-1978), Mizzou upset a "who's who" of college FB powers of that time, including ND, Southern Cal, Ohio State, Alabama and Nebraska.

he was apart of the best history. he went to three orange bowls. one surgar bowl. one gator bowl.. one bluebonnet bowl. two confrence titles. a sun bowl a fiesta bowl beat alabama twice once as a coach beat notre dame beat nebraska three times as a coach and 8 times with devine beat some great oklahoma teams in the 60's and in my opinion probably won a national title (in my opinion). remember defense is mainly the reson why mizzou was great in the 60' and consitanly good in the 70's

Right, QB sacks were subtracted from the rushing yard total. I think that's still the way sacks are treated in college football statistics, but I think the NFL subtracts QB sacks from passing yards, which makes more sense, IMO.

It was one of more remarkable seasons in MU football history. Wins over two Top-10 teams and one over a Top 15 team (Iowa State). That season followed the 1971 season, which Missouri finished 1-10.

Not a bad season when you beat Dan Fouts and Tom Clemence.

The only footage I might have from the Warren Powers era would be contained in the VHS tape put together in 1990 to commemorate the 100th year of Missouri football. Highlights from the 1981 and 1983 wins over OU are on that tape, I believe. Do you have that tape?

Wish they would go back to those simple skinny white M's on their helmet, as well as the Old Gold. How could Cal be held to negative 77 yards? Was that counting sacks of the QB? Sounds like a couple of Bob Griese Super Bowl VI disasters.
