One of a Kind Coffee Table

  • I built this coffee table using 3 hardwoods: maple, cherry & walnut. It measures 24"x48" and the top is 3" thick end grain. The base is solid walnut and the drawers are cherry. This was a massive project and my largest to date. I drew inspiration for this build from a cutting board pattern that originated from MTMWood.
    This was a lot of fun to build with a few trying times along the way. Between the build, filming and editing, this took me.....a long time :) As always, there are a few things I could improve upon; my joinery being a good example. I learned a TON on this and look forward to another project like this one.

    the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

    This is nothing short of a masterpiece. What the average person doesn't know or see is the fact when doing work like this, even if it's a simple cutting board. One slip or over cut requires adjustment to other work pieces as well or the pattern will not work perfectly. Also the titanic amount of prep work involved is nothing short of crazy. Great work my man.

      watching videos like this is what got me into furniture and woodworking. seeing works like this off the affordable contractor equipment convinced me I could in fact do it too. 6 years later and now i have all the bling tools and while it may have removed some extra sanding or planning the end results are the same. the bling tools speed up the setup and assist in repeatability but its the skill and creativeness of the craftsman that truly makes the difference.

The *only* thing I, as a customer with a touch of OCD would ask for is that the handles on the drawers should be symmetrical. Flip that right hand drawer pull over and this is 100% perfection.

      Yeah I was just thinking this is fairly simple, but you need really well tuned equipment to pull this off. You see the full setup with the planer, digital angle finder for the perfect miter etc. Yes a lot of people could build this, but no it wouldn't look as perfect without some real craftsmanship, and those minor details can really scream about someone's experience level. It's crazy how even if you're just missing 10% quality, that can be a big difference when you're comparing work.

    The coffee ☕️ table turned out awesome, and I know I'm a year late seeing this video but hayho 😊. It must have taken you days if not weeks when doing just the table top, let alone the copious amount of woodglue that you had to use, I'd love to see how it has held up over the past 12 months etc. Had this been my project and with it turning out so good honestly I'd have been following everyone around with coasters and telling people that they had to use them otherwise they had to re-sand and finish the table top from scratch. Too nice to ruin with coffee stains !!!. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

    This table is a masterpiece of a forgotten generation. Nobody goes so far to do things like dove tailing and the like. This is a beautiful table and you have done a job that most professionals in this line of work would be stroking their beards in envy over. What a talent you have my friend. Your video alone is a masterpiece. Keep up the excellent work and good luck with your next job.

      Oh, sure they did. You just don't see the pieces anymore.
      ...mostly because when you completely entrap 5 different species of wood inside of one another with glue the orient their respect grains literally every which way, it's a matter of time before you get a really humid summer and the piece will start to tear itself apart.
      You don't make a piece like this for your great-grandchildren. It's be falling apart by then (and pretty much impossible to service). For the same reason you wouldn't build one for a client unless they insisted (you'd try to steer them in a different direction, because f'real: you're NOT gonna be able to service this thing). No, this is a labor of love, for the sheer fun of it. It's pretty amazing marketing/advertising too.
      But outside something small, like a cutting board? A piece like this... as exquisite as it is... is really just a novelty/impressive flex. I'm not knocking it, at ALL, mind. But compared to some of the intarsia from the Elizabethan era? Oh, trust me: nobody's forgotten how to do it. It's just a damn nightmare TO do (and 10x WORSE when one has to do all the video post afterwards, TOO, if I don't miss my guess.)

      Dovetails? I see no dovetails in this table. Looks like your mistaking finger joints as dovetails.

      @@brandonbennett127 It appeared that when he was making the drawer, he used dovetails for the joints of the boards. If I am mistaken, it's ok, the entire job is still excellent.

    Love this table, and I appreciate how you stepped through the whole process. One question I had about the build: how did you decide to connect the base to the top?

    • @IJChan223
      @IJChan223 2 роки тому +3

      @24:50 you see slots cut in the base so likely Z clips .

    • @ryanhawkins
      @ryanhawkins  2 роки тому +1

      I used offset clips that screw into the underside of the top and rest inside a small dado cut on the inside of the base frame.
