You just have to exit the file (obviously, save first) and then return. That overpowered process restores your life count back to the original number.

Mudkip fainted, resulting in defeat and a white-out in Pokémon. AiAi fell out of the maze. Sonic's death is like the SEGA Genesis games. Samus ran out of energy.
