  • New River Trail State Park is a 57-mile linear park that parallels the scenic and historic New River for 39 miles. It meanders through Grayson, Carroll, Wythe and Pulaski counties and the city of Galax, offering 12 different access points.
The section of trail from Fries Junction to Fries is 5.5 miles long and is home to Double Shoals Campground, which offers two hike-in or paddle-in primitive campsites. This section also features a boat ramp and horse trailer parking. Downtown Fries, pronounced “freeze,” is located just a few feet from the trail, giving visitors the chance to grab a quick lunch or explore the quiet, timeless town that’s rich in cultural heritage.
