This was really interesting, I love the example about the context behind a line, it’s something that as a viewer really changes the scene without you even noticing. To be able to make that come across with one line where the words don’t relate to the statement is really powerful
I used to act and sing in Opera's (example La Boheme, a Midsummer night's dream ecc) even though I only sang in the choir I always had to work with different directors and stuff and sometimes they weren't really that understanding!! I totally get what you're saying!! Really nice video!!
Excellent Vid! I've only made a few simple shorts - so I'm still trying to develop and understand my own directing style. But, so far, my approach to casting has had an emphasis on communication - a bit more like an interview than an audition.
Very interesting. I'm doing more film & TV today but I started in theater. Thanks for sharing man. But I do miss the collaboration of stage and "feeling" the audience.
Great stuff! I tend to say that I cast people for a reason, and we work together to bring out the play. I'm not all that interested in telling an actor how to play a scene, but to explore what the scene is and then let them do their jobs.
Would love to hear more about your own personal experiences! Hearing some of your best and worst experiences in the acting world and why would be very interesting. I don't have a huge experience in working on film, but coming from the world of theater I feel it'd be a lot more stressful. I'm really used to directors working with the acting more extensively, so it'd definitely be a change. Very interesting to hear the different perspective!
I will probably talk a bit about personal experiences as per your request :) There's an actor that one said that film is about making a perfect moment, which I think is somewhat true. Theater is more about the ongoing process.
I need to save up some ££ and get a good Shavinism shirt!! I might ask for one for my birthday, actually! :D Omg! Not Kevin Spacey intimate.. nonononono! lol!
I def respond better with a humor based director. If they make me laugh I tend to want to do more to bring out the same enjoyment. I guess it depends on the genre of the play now that I think about it. Most of my roles have been comedy based so the humorous directing technique worked better for me.
I tend to be the same, even if it's drama. I think it releases tension and actors (in general) shouldn't take themselves too seriously. It's called a play, the actors are called players (in the old day). It should be fun.
Hmm...I guess when I think about it, the actor doesn't get to ad lib the words in the lone except in specific circumstances you have to say the actual words in the script. So to suggest that the actor doesn't want to hear from the Director that a word should be emphasized a certain way. The director is trying to craft the vision, and unless you're a high paid famous actor, balking at the the line read suggestion seems like a bad idea, lol.
The script doesn't change, but actors see it as their job to find context and meaning. When someone tells them exactly how to say, where to stand etc they often think they have no control over the creative process. There's a great story that John Travolta told that he came to a director and said to him that he thought about the character and has 3 different ways he sees him and wanted to know if the director has a preference. So the director said something along the lines of "You're getting 20 million for this movie. That's YOUR job"
Do you have any tips for auditions? I’m in my first year of my actor training degree and I’m wanting to try and audition for something in the summer. Also what are your tips for applying for an agent?
What things do you want to know about the acting world or my experiences? Would love to hear your thoughts.
Shavinism Would you ever consider being a director yourself? What inspired you to become an actor?
Great video :)

One day I may get into text work and how to always have an active motive. Anything else is just boring.

That's awesome that you sang Operas!
Directors are a mixed bag. If you don't get one that 'speaks your lingo' it can be quite a frustrating process.
Excellent Vid!

Thank you very much sir!
An interview is definitely a good way to find out who you would like to work with and what they can bring to the table.
haha not kevin spacey intimate! Great video sweet pea. insightful!
Thank you sugar pups :)

Thanks man! I'm the same and miss the audience feel as well. May go back to stand up to feel that again

The best kind of director to work with. I love the exploration process
