  • Snake-hipped popster Shane Fenton - later reborn as Alvin Stardust - sings 'n' twists to his biggest 60s hit in this fab full-colour jukebox film.

This twangy track, replete with echo-drenched Shadows-style Fender guitar licks, provided Shane Fenton with his last 1960s hit single. Shane would achieve his greatest chart successes in the 1970s - once he'd dyed his hair jet black, slipped on his black gloves, and reinvented himself as dark glam rocker Alvin Stardust.
This pop promo was made for the Cinebox - a coin-operated film jukebox, fleetingly found in British pubs and clubs. Pricier than your average audio-only jukebox, Cinebox never really caught on - but its films captured some terrific early 60s pop acts in full colour. Shane name checks and demonstrates The Twist here - a fast and furious pop dance craze at the time - but this gentle, haunting beat ballad, showcasing Shane's distinctive vocal style, harks back to the late great Buddy Holly - right down to some high-pitched hiccups.

There was something cool and quaint about the 1958-1964 era, that handover era between Elvis and the Beatles, even the sound was unique, not quite 50s anymore yet not yet 60s

The guys look so handsome...boy do I miss those late '50s/early '60s fashions: The handsome hairstyles, the Ivy League suits, the narrow ties & lapels, the tapered flat-front slacks, the wing tips. The Beatles ruined everything. Great sound, great video!

He was offered the Lennon and McCartney song "Do You Want to know a Secret" as he was looking for a career reviving hit in 1963.
He Turned it down and Billy j Kramer took it and got a huge hit from it.
I'm sure that song would have suited his voice/ style perfectly.
By the end of 63 Fenton vanished from the radar until he came back bigger with another name takeover, that of Alvin stardust.
For those that don't know the original shane Fenton or the guy who used that stage name died so Bernard took his place and became shane Fenton.
Alvin stardust was another act created by someone who didn't want to perform under that name, eventually Bernard took over that name as well.
Very interesting reading up on his life

It was Peter Shelley who created the Alvin Stardust persona, and wrote and sang 'My Coo Ca Choo'. He didn't want to appear as Alvin Stardust or promote the record, so they got Bernard Jewry - aka Shane Fenton - to take it on. People still think it's him who sang 'My Coo Ca Choo, when in fact he mimed to Peter Shelley's vocals when he appeared on Top of The Pops. He may have later sang it himself at his concerts, but it's Peter Shelley singing it on the recorded version.

When he appeared on Top of the Pops singing My Coo Ca Choo, he'd just dyed his hair and he couldn't get the black dye off his hands, so he borrowed a pair of black leather gloves to cover up the dye on his hands. Those black leather gloves became one of Alvin Stardust's trademarks.

Nonsence..Don't know how you came to that conclusion. My Cousin in his Mansfield days went with him..Far from gay, he loved the girls and they loved him..Just a nice laid back gentle guy..

His name is or was as his gone up to God now, Bernard Drewery, he became Shane, when the original Shane Fenton, real name Johnny Theakston, who was his friend died from rheumatic fever age 17 years, at request of the late boy's mum Bernard, became Shane Fenton, and reinvents himself in the 1970s the Stardust came from David Bowie's creation Ziggy Stardust, can't remember how he came about the Alvin part but I'm sure it'll be on wikipedia
