Just wanted to take a moment and THANK YOU for making this video! I live in bend or without a garage and my dad flew here from iowa to help my fix my car. We had beers and watched this video before we started working on the timing belt. My dad keeps asking if I have thanked you for him yet, so here it is officially. Thanks again from Nate and my dad Norbert
you have seriously raised the bar for b5 s4 diy's, thank you for taking the time to share this. if it wasnt for you i wouldnt have made it to the dyno last month
This video helped me so much during my timing belt change. I also upgraded my intercoolers, snub mount and changed my valve cover gaskets on both sides. Also a good oppertunity to clean some things. Thank you very much for this informative video. Never quit doing this for the B5 S4 community🙌🏽!
betley made allot of mistakes on the a6 2.7t i had to correct them the torque for the 5mm fan clutch snapped using there spec. called them corrected them they didnt even show the crank lock and how to get to it removing turbo pipe
Just finished my timing belt job using your video for our 2001 S4 Auto...that turned into: Full coolant flush, After run pump replacement, phenolic gasket install, full set of silicon boots/tubes (ECS) , new valve cover gaskets, cam seals, cam tensioner seals (Used Edge Motorsports Timing Belt Video for this), front and rear rotors+pads, new plugs, 4 new O2 sensors, Power seteering cooler line leak repair, new ambient air temp sensor bracket since I found mine broken, and now that it rocks and rolls again I will be doing a transmission pan drop and filter. The pace and detail of your DIY video was essential to my success without missing details. FYI TO THOSE WITH AUTO/Tiptronic transmissions using this video. The crank lock pin will be a serious FRUSTRATION but is a MUST. I dropped the anti sway bar out of the way and was able to use a special "Low profile" articulating/swivel 10mm socket. Basically, instead of a 3/8 inch drive nipple on the swivel there is a 10mm socket end. I was able to get JUST enough clearance between the turbo inlet pipe and the crank locking pin to get it in. BE Patient, be clean...it will go. ALSO, before you start, you will definitely want to take the "lock carrier" completely off to do this job, its just absolutely worth it to do so in my opinion. Service position is for shops who want to make a good gross profit... Getting the timing belt on especially the Gates racing belt I chose would have been a serious challenge in the service position. To do this WITH AN AUTO you will need to disconnect your transmission cooling lines. These lines "press" into the radiator on the passenger side and are held in with a 10mm bolt. GET NEW O RINGS FROM YOUR LOCAL AUDI DEALER BEFORE YOU BEGIN. These are NOT standard metric O rings that you can find in a kit they are AUDI specific and cost about $4.25 a piece from audi. You will NOT Get a good seal reusing the old O rings because they will be "oversize" after years of service and heat among other things. A 4 dollar O ring is not a good place to cut corners. With new o rings my lines slipped right into the radiator and I have absolutely NO leaking. BE SURE NOT TO LOOSE A LOT OF TRANSMISSION FLUID WHEN PULLING THE RADIATOR! PULL IT AND TIP IT BACK IMMEDIATELY THEN PLUG THE HOLES in the radiator and the lines to it. Some guys use ear plugs?? I had plugs ready that fit. Otherwise you will need to top off your transmission or do a change. These were my frustrations...hope it helps a few.
I know it is 7 years ago but man, with the automatic transmission it is so much worse....I was close to setting the car on fire. We are doing it in the service position because we lost a bit of transmission cooling fluid too and weren't sure what to do. We "only" wanted to do the timing belt, valve cover gaskets for both banks and the timing chain of the first bank...Jesus Christ. The amount of shit you have to unscrew because EVERYTHING is in the way...seriously. The cams on the left side are out now though. The gaskets are hard as rock, no wonder the enginge was pissing oil everywhere. the timing chain guides are done, the chain has been going at them for quite some time. 24 years to be precise :D Chain is lengthened too. Oh well, we are almost at the point where we can build it back together....
Thank you so much for such a completely kickass walk through. I did mine last week thanks to you. Well done sir. I have now thoroughly bonded with my b5.
like everyone else said, this video is a step above everything else out there. thank you for your time and effort. been a master mechanic on American cars, but i would not have even tried to do this job without your help.
U are a god. I Have an A6 with the 2.7t engine, and aside from taking the bumper cover off, everything else looks the same. I've had to go in to replace an alternator, valve cover gaskets and a cam plug but the Timing Belt was done at 90K miles, at 145k now and i have this job in the back of my mind. I am saving this video forever.
Awesome video, thank you. Yesterday was my first time pulling the S4 apart and this video made things alot easier. managed to have it apart in a couple hours. waiting on parts now. keep up the great work. you give noobs like me hope of owning and maintaining a nice car.
man just put my audi all back togther after a pull transmission resealed and 1-2 shift collar updated.. and also timing belt done.. these videos are killers i would have died without these videos... but thanks alot keep up the good work and videos!
Many thanks for putting the time + effort into making this video! I've replaced the TB once already on my '01.5 and it's due again. I'll be referencing your video to refresh my memory. Thanks!!
Im not even halfway through the video and already I'm gonna say you are fawkin awesome and so thorough with you explanations. Please please make more videos, I love my 02 B5s4 and work on it myself your videos are so insightfull
Just bought a 2.7t from 04 with 68k on it and I just hit 70k . I think I'm just gonna go ahead and do this and the seals considering the age of the vehicle just for peace of mind. This video helped me out a lot, I have a detailed step by step manual on how to do it but this cleared the air quite a bit so thank you very much.
Thanks for the excellent video and descriptions of each step. I had to change the serpentine belt and remove a inoperative "boy racer induced electric fan" and replace that with the OEM viscous fan on my 2001 B5 S4 Avant. (Getting ready for the Audi HPDE at Road America) BTW its the 25th anniversary of the first National "Quattro Club" event outside of Frank Beddor's home track in Brainerd, MN. I had only a few missteps and also had to put a couple machine bushings on the fan pulley as the new fan actually just grazed the APR downpipe on the D-side. The PO had cut the left handed nut off of the original fan & either put it on to "protect " the threads or actually didn't know what way it came off... Unfortunately, watching your video carefully also let me know how many parts I am missing that have been removed, broken or lost! I totally appreciate the time it takes to do this and how you make it look so easy. Hopefully when I need to do the full blown timing belt and all the accessory stuff it won't seem so insurmountable, and won't take me half as long to get the car in the service position! Wish you were closer so I could come visit and ask questions! thanks Larry Boyer
Fantastic job Justin, you are a professional Mechanic and highly skilled. Love your yellow S4 mine is black. I’ll check out your other vids, wouldn’t mind a detailed vid about all the upgraded parts on your b5 machine!
Just did this in the weekend, couldn't have done it so quickly or easily without your help! Although mine was a little different, had a transmission cooler as part of the radiator...
This video helped me alot. **to install the locking pin on a automatic without removing the AC compressor**: disconnect the driver side inter cooler pipe that goes to the turbo. that should give you more space.
When you popped the clip for the radiator hose, and said "or you can just take it off" I hella laughed.. haha. great videos man.. I finally subbed.. Been searching for the right Audi A4(b5) for myself lately.. A good one is hard to find now a days... Keep up the good work. I learn a lot from your videos.. Thank you.
This video was awesome bro! I can tell you have done a few timing belt jobs on these before. This is way easier than doing the belt on my Acura MDX. I'll be getting my B5 as soon as I find a clean one that's a stick shift. Keep up the good work!!
dude! that coolant tool you use is awesome! I've done quite a few v6 audis, vws, bms..... so much trouble burping and bleeding..... freaking air pockets.... gotta get one of those. you just took a few cuss words out of my normal day!
what an excellent video!! and at same time thank you, read some of the comments. i was looking on buying 2007 s4 but i probably just go with subaru wrx. thanks again!!!!
Great video, informative and confidence building. Put my S4 into service mode and replaced a faulty alternator without any issues or dramas. Like most things they appear daunting but once attempted you realise it's not that difficult after all.
Hey Justin, i just did a timing belt change on my S4 b5 Thank you so much for this video and for your effort! It was my first timing belt change and thanks to you I did it! :) Greetings from Germany
Awesome video!, thank you so much. It's like watching bob ross the painter, so pleasant. Might wanna get ya a ferret or something as a mascot (j/k) Have a great day.
It’s just an engine block... what could go wrong.?!?..!? I still suggest chasing the threads to get all the garbage that has built up over the years....or if someone decided to do the job wrong and slapped silicone around the gasket.
WOW impressive man. Very well done. I have done a DIY vid on an R32 haldex service and know how much time it takes to make something like this. Great job!
Awesome video super informative! Is there anyway to tell if this has been done without tearing everything apart? Thinking of buying one of these cars but it has no maintenance records
Cause I'm sick of trying to refind my stuff (B5 S4 2.7t is the only engine I don't have a free full guide with all the specs on how to do everything etc etc but I have everything for 4.2 A8 D3 and 2.8 B5 and 1.8t B5) 43:58 The NON moving timing belt idler pully 34lbs 44:25 The little pitman arm thing 12lbs 44:33 The MOVING adjustable timing belt idler roller 14lbs Cam gears 42lbs Fan clutch support thingy 16lbs out side, and 12lbs inside ones Crank dampener 16lbs Accessory belt adjuster 40lbs
This is amazing. Thank you so much for making this. It's making my thermostat housing replacement job a breeze so far. While I'm doing that, I'm going to flush the coolant and replace the TB and all fixin's. I had a local race shop do the job the first time, and for some reason they left the plastic housing in. But it lasted 164K mikes, so I guess I can't complain. A couple questions: what is the thread size on the water pump bolts, and what did you use to clean the engine with? Thanks.
Just finished up mine, big thanks! Just noticed on little thing. Even though it really looks like the Crankpulley cover is suppose to go over the fan pulley assembly it is not, it´s suppose to go behind it like when you removed it. That´s why you hardly can see the alignment line on the pulley after the installation because the cover is pushed too much forward of the fan pulley assy. Best Regards
At 19:50 you show where to place the locking pin,,,, (I'm doing a 2003 audi a6 quattro 2.7 bi-turbo c5) and it looks like mine has a wire coming out of the top of it, seems weird from what you showed, plus, the 10 mm bolt holding in the cap that I need to remove is in the 4 o'clock position and NOT the 7 o'clock position like you showed,,,,, am I missing something here please ???? thank you....
Hello! Why does everyone say to definitely NOT put any RTV/Silicon on this water pump? I had the 2.8l v6 (same timing belt process really) and I installed the water pump with only the paper gasket twice and both times had a small leak on the bottom side. I did everything properly and check gasket placement with every bolt. So I assumed there was obviously some imperfection somewhere so I decided to use the gasket with water pump specific RTV/Silicon and it did not leak at all. Still running today, and no leaks!:D I'm just curious why people say to NEVER do RTV/silicon on this water pump?
Thank you so much for the video! so I followed the video and I've done all but put coolant back in. also changed value cover gaskets. I was going to try to see if it ran before I put the coolant in but it just turns over no fire... I sprayed starting fluid still no fire... any ideas? (also the timing belt broke as I was starting the car one day.) hoping no bent valves...
If you get the time/chance to do something of this quality for belt on the 4.2l Belt driven audi! Not sure if there are differences from the 02-03 S6 Avant to the belt driven A6's 4.2, but this video would be very very helpful! Thank you,
great vid man and very helpful, keep them coming and also if you have the opportunity of making one to replace the starter on the 2.7t would be great, that thing was a nightmare
Have you had any leaks from using the paper gasket on the water pump? As you mentioned the original OEM gasket was made from metal. I am about to do my third timing belt etc... on my 2001 Audi 2.8 a6 C5. Thx!
Could you do a DIY for realigning the front bumper? Mine does not seem like it want to snap onto the bracket and it does not align with the fender. Thanks.
Justin ! Question for a Audi guru like yourself, the cam caps on the 2.7 heads, are there supposed to be dowels in the head on both sides of the cam to locate the cap? Audi couldn’t help me and most people show pics of one dowel on either side without rhyme or reason. Didn’t know how to contact you so I figured this would do
awesome video! thanks for documenting. One constructive criticism i would not ever chase threads with a power tool especially an impact driver it can snap a bound or bottomed tap better to use a hand tap handle so you can feel any resistance. At the very least, switch to a small drill if you insist on using a power tool it is smoother and more controllable and does not generate torque multiplied impacts when it meets resistance.
Hey Justin Ballou. What happens at 19:16???? You say cam gear may be little off cause of stretched belt...then blip, you edit and the bar is magically on. What did you do?
Justin I have a 1998 audi a4 1.8l b5 four cylinder. I need to change my crankshaft seal but I don't see the locking pin hole. How do I hold the crankshaft to remove bolt?. Very very nice vid u and person helping u record.
Hey Justin. Thanks for the great explanations. Do the replacement parts you used come in a kit? If so which one? If not, can you tell me which parts you used? Thanks a bunch. Alec
Justin, Thank you so much for taking the time for putting together this GREAT video, it was a GREAT help for a novice like me doing my first TB job on my S4. The only thing that would have been helpful would have been if you could have possibly shown, or explained a method for dealing with the auto transmission cooler lines that are connected to the radiator, and maybe giving some other thoughts, and again maybe demo'ed (I understand the room is really tight so getting a camera shot would be hard) of getting the crank lock pin in place especially on a car with an Auto transmission.... my hands aren't huge but even with dropping the sway bar I could barely get my hand up in the opening in an odd contorted position in order to seat the lock pin in the o-ring, but I couldn't get enough pressure on it to get the threads to bite and catch. I ended up having to do the TB without the lock pin in place. ( I put the back plate on and held the harmonic dampener in place and made sure the arrow and line lined up, they didn't the first time so I have to re-do the TB a 2nd time and adjust the crank by about 5 or 10 degrees but then they were dead on) but I would have much rather been able to lock the crank and I'm sure with someone's guidance and a video showing how to do it properly it would have been easy :)
Bill Anderson I charge more for doing an Automatic trans S4 as there is more involved. With the Trans cooler lines running next to the Crank pin location, it makes it difficult. If all else fails, move the A/C compressor out of the way. On the Trans cooler lines to the Radiator, I just disconnect them and plug them (minimal fluid loss.)
Halfway through doing my water pump and timing belt from watching this video. Based on what i saw you doing in this video after placing the bar between the cam pullies. What reason do i need to put that crank pin in into the block? Changing thermostat, water pump, and belt does not cause the crank or the cams to move. I ask cause that pin is way to much trouble to get at.
nylontemptation That is actually the most important part. If the crank is even a degree off, things can take a turn for the worse. Spend the time, do it correctly. Drop the swaybar, remove the belly pan bracket, use a long 10mm box end wrench to break bolt free, then shove your hand up there and use a stubby gear wrench. A standard screwdriver will help pry out the plug (be gentle.). I just did this on a car 10min ago....so it is fresh in my mind.
+Tj Jallad Yes..look up the torque specs. However, the "crank pulley" is a harmonic balancer and is responsible for driving the serpentine belt. The torque in the manual is 20nm in the assembly torque chart and 25nm in the "instructions" That is pretty typical Bentley for you.
Which die and tap are you using to chase the threads and bolts on the water pump? I think bolts are 6m with 2.0pitch but can't find a M6*2.0 die, only M6x1.0. Can you steer me in the right direction? Thanks
Just for visibility, I've removed the water pump and chased the bolts with a M6x1 die and it rounded the bolts. I've cut one of the original bolts to clean the block and will buy new bolts .

I have been looking for a video of this comprehension for about 4 months. Great work, thank you so much, well done....
love your videos, truly a great mechanic. Greetings from scandinavia (Denmark) Been a mechanic for 20 years btw
Great video. Very much appreciated for taking the time and showing the whole thing and not assuming everyone is an expert.
Thank you so much Justin, would not have been able to do this on my S4 without your video

Super helpful! Just realised that I have a transmission oil cooler on my manual 99 integrated in the radiator.... made it a bit fiddlier. Thanks again
I enjoyed watching this before I did my 3rd (!!!) timing belt on my 2000 S4. I love this video. I love this car!
When you popped the clip for the radiator hose, and said "or you can just take it off" I hella laughed.. haha. great videos man.. I finally subbed.. what an excellent video!! and at same time thank you, read some of the comments. i was looking on buying 2007 s4 but i probably just go with subaru wrx. thanks again!!!!
Just did my timing belt and this video was very helpful. Thanks!

Great video, informative and confidence building. Put my S4 into service mode and replaced a faulty alternator without any issues or dramas. Like most things they appear daunting but once attempted you realise it's not that difficult after all.
Can't wait to start wrenching thanks to this video!
Hey Justin,
i just did a timing belt change on my S4 b5
Thank you so much for this video and for your effort!
It was my first timing belt change and thanks to you I did it! :)
Greetings from Germany
very in depth! thank you for the video, i plan on using it in the future!
Justin, you float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. Well done, sir!
Thanks for the video. I've been putting off doing the timing belt on my S4 for months now. Time to rip in
Awesome video!, thank you so much. It's like watching bob ross the painter, so pleasant. Might wanna get ya a ferret or something as a mascot (j/k) Have a great day.
Thanks for making this video, exactly what I needed.
Excellent video, helped me do my timing belt. Only trouble having my one side of my bumper not go on, but I have a fmic.
Thank you so much! Ive been waiting for this video from you! very good production value!
You're such a pleasant mechanic, How much do you charge for this service?
My a**hole puckered up when you put that impact gun on the tap for the water pump bolts...
Lol. Thought the exact same thing. Not advised to do this. Tap them, just don't use an impact!
It’s just an engine block... what could go wrong.?!?..!? I still suggest chasing the threads to get all the garbage that has built up over the years....or if someone decided to do the job wrong and slapped silicone around the gasket.
Try a hole in the rad, impacted rusty longer bolt into the temp sens 4 pwr steering in the front... dumbas..
WOW impressive man. Very well done. I have done a DIY vid on an R32 haldex service and know how much time it takes to make something like this. Great job!
great video, like some others I'm really curious what you used to clean the engine...family secret?
This is an amazing video, thank yo so much for doing this.
This video helped me a ton. 🤞 I'm still nervous to fire it up first time.
cool video, thanks dude .very helpful. Keep em coming.
Awesome video super informative! Is there anyway to tell if this has been done without tearing everything apart? Thinking of buying one of these cars but it has no maintenance records
Very tidy work dude! Impressed

Thx that you made all this Videos from the b5‘s!!❤️💥💥
this by far is the best diy ever made, can i take the 2000 a6 rad and fans off like this would make life so much easier
Crazy awesome video good sir, thank you for posting, but will this work for a 2003 audi a6 bi-turbo Quattro, OR at least be similar ????
Man you are crazy this car has the rhe most heavy maintenance car I've ever seen
Thank god for this guy
If you get the time/chance to do something of this quality for belt on the 4.2l Belt driven audi!
Not sure if there are differences from the 02-03 S6 Avant to the belt driven A6's 4.2, but this video would be very very helpful!
Thank you,
great vid man and very helpful, keep them coming and also if you have the opportunity of making one to replace the starter on the 2.7t would be great, that thing was a nightmare
Would you make a video about lining front and reae bumpers up perfectly?
I would like to thank you for this wonderful video. But what is the name of that steel bar that locks the timing belt pulleys?I need to order my one?
i have my 2.8 apart to replace cam seals. what did you use to clean your engine? brake clean?
Have you had any leaks from using the paper gasket on the water pump? As you mentioned the original OEM gasket was made from metal.
I am about to do my third timing belt etc... on my 2001 Audi 2.8 a6 C5.
Thx!
Could you do a DIY for realigning the front bumper? Mine does not seem like it want to snap onto the bracket and it does not align with the fender. Thanks.
What did you use to clean the front of the engine and how did you do it?
I would need to figure out where that is in the raw video data. Not sure since it has been a few years since I filmed this.
Why do you need to pull out cam gears? Assuming you are only doing timing belt replacement. ie: not changing cam seals.
Justin I have a 1998 audi a4 1.8l b5 four cylinder. I need to change my crankshaft seal but I don't see the locking pin hole. How do I hold the crankshaft to remove bolt?. Very very nice vid u and person helping u record.
5th gear and have someone hold the brake
How much is the average it cost for a shop to replace it
best video diy ever 😀 good job
About all the crank pulley bolts are stripe.. how would i go about getting them out??
Hey Justin. Thanks for the great explanations. Do the replacement parts you used come in a kit? If so which one? If not, can you tell me which parts you used? Thanks a bunch.
Alec
Video excellent!!!!!
tnks a lot for sharing!!!
Justin. Where can I get the pulley holder that you used for holding the fan clutch.
Wow great video
One day you should make a DIY video on upgrading the turbos
Justin where u located? Do you so other cars. Might need mine done.
Thanks awesome video really appreciate this 🙏
my 02 allroad quattro and i thank you!!!
Justin,
Thank you so much for taking the time for putting together this GREAT video, it was a GREAT help for a novice like me doing my first TB job on my S4.
@@JustinBallou01 Mine is a tip. So i guess I am going to drop the compressor. Can you tell me how many bolts to do that and what size the bolts are?
Will this be the same procedure for the 2000 VW Passat v6 b5 ?
Does the engine need to be pulled in the b5s4 for a exhaust manifold leak?
To bust lose the crack pulley bolts , it took more than 80 ft/lb. Now to torque them it's only 20 NM, seems a little low?
+Tj Jallad Hey man my advice would be to look up the torque specs per the Bentley manual.
Do you have any clue how I would go about replacing the starter? Cant seem to find much support online
great video you sir are a pro
Which die and tap are you using to chase the threads and bolts on the water pump? I think bolts are 6m with 2.0pitch but can't find a M6*2.0 die, only M6x1.0.
Can you steer me in the right direction? Thanks
Just for visibility, I've removed the water pump and chased the bolts with a M6x1 die and it rounded the bolts. I've cut one of the original bolts to clean the block and will buy new bolts .
what size allan is that and what brand? trying to make sure i have everything before hand
Please make a video of how to line the front bumper up as perfect as that one.... Please
You are my hero.
how to fuck did you clean that engine mine is a mess even after cleaning
Great video, Thank you!
