  • Removing a mature Sea buckthorn tree from my garden
Sea buckthorn Hippophae rhamnoides makes a great hedge plant with silvery-grey foliage. The orange berries are edible and high in nutrient value. It is native to Europe and Asia.
To produce berries, male and female species are required and my female shrub didn’t survive a harsh winter. What is left now is the male tree.
I planted this tree only 3 years ago and it has grown very quickly, outgrowing its spot in my small cottage garden. As much as I like it for its many health benefits, it has to be removed because it requires lots of space to grow. It has an aggressive root system with suckers which pop up around in my garden. It is not suitable for a small garden.
The branches have lots of long thorns, which make it difficult to walk around in a small plot.
In this video I remove the tree to make space for other beneficial shrubs and to allow more light into this corner of the herbaceous border.

Absolutely yes, they are. That was the main reason I wanted to grow my own. I just need a bigger garden.....maybe one day...

I know the feeling of running out of space. Every time I want something new I have to remove something. I’m sure you are happy the thorny bush is gone. Was a lot of work. Wow those roots. You have a lovely garden Eva. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. It is a tough decision for me, when something that is healthy has to go... but it opened up so much space for new plants.

Yes, we need trees, but thorns are not good in a garden, except for roses, of course. You did an excellent job digging that up. Take care.

Thank you. The fence was the beginning of the garden, I knew I needed a backdrop for my flowers. The mountains is the main reason we live here. Thanks for watching, Eva.

First let me apologize because this is going to be long. Thank you for showing us your channel. I am excited to be a new subscriber. I absolutely am in love with your home and garden. An amazing log home, the living roofs around the garden, The fence, I can stare at your fence all day. I don't know if you made it from driftwood or how it got that amazing weathered look but its fantastic. Is that a hollowed out log and a planter I see as well. Great job with those trees roots as well. I cant wait to watch more of your videos.

Thank you for joining my channel, but huge thank you for your on point observations. The fence is made from a locust tree wood, at least that is what I could find for the English translation. It is a very hard wood, that can withstand our rough winters here. The green roofs are currently undergoing a transformation, video on that whole project is in the works. The log planter was just left over piece from the house build. Thank you and welcome.

Your garden is beautiful 🤩😍 if you have critter issues like cat and dog with getting into your garden save those thorny branches and use them to cover over garden beds that you plant in….these thorny branches will protect your seeds/seedlings while deterring some critters and birds…I subscribed…you have great videos 🥰

Thanks for the tip. Will def try that as I have voles (meadow mice) devour most of my seedlings every spring. Welcome.

That was a battle! But definitely not one for a small garden with all the runners. I find lilac is similar it too sends up lots of suckers all I can do is cut them back as the trees are very well established . Well done you worked very hard there.

Thanks for watching. I like lilacs too, lots of childhood memories pop up when the smell lingers in the spring air.

Must be the thornless variety, they grow several of these in the Moscow region. I wish I new before I purchased this one. Thank you for watching.
