What's your favorite Barbie movie?
Barbie in the 12 dancing princesses, Barbie as Rapunzel, Barbie Diaries, Mariposa and Barbie and a Secret Door
Diamond Castle, Princess and the Pauper, the Pink Shoes
Princess charm school and diamond castle
Anything that isn't the Great Puppy Chase
Yes, fear the brunettes!
I like that Barbie is able to be a "girly-girl", wearing pink and falling in love, and is ALSO able to be the hero of every single one of her stories. It's pretty unusual to see that kind of feminism these days.
It's not unusual, it's just not what people put in the spotlight. It's very common and easy to find, though
Thank you! This is so true
Thats exactly what i like about the series
Trueeee, there’s nothing wrong with embracing your feminine side at all :)
It`s so cool that people who were waching these movies as kids now are talking about them. As a teen I used to be ashamed of the fact that I liked all this stupid girly stuff. It is awesome that girls entertainment is finally seen as something worth spending time on and we aren`t shamed for liking it.
Part of the problem with that is how much society seems to look down on and decry certain parts of media just because its "girly", even if its extremely successful.
Whereas stuff for guys gets away with a lot more slack even though some of the stuff they sell can be even more juvenile and insulting than things aimed at kids.
and boys :)
so true !! if it wasn’t for barbie i wouldn’t be in fashion school right now pursuing my dreams
I was actively made fun of by other kids for liking girly things even though I was a literal child girl. It’s so ridiculous in hind sight. I was also made to feel ashamed and even rejected it and thought girly stuff was dumb. Glad I don’t think that now. Sad I had to go through that though.
as a boy who's childhood was filled to the top with Barbie and then proceeded to pretend to hate it because I thought it was "embarrassing", it's really beautiful to see. I might not like barbie as much as I did when I was 7 but it still made an important impact on my life and I'm really glad for it. Barbie rocks!
I remember my dad going into a tangent about how good the writing in these movies are while the animation is awful.
And it's really weird because he's very conservative, so you would expect him to hate these girly movies.
For me, story is more importantly than visuals, so I agree.
Honestly the animation wasn't that bad. Sure it wasn't Pixar level but for a direct to video early 2000 movies, it was fine.
I feel like if the animation would’ve been better these movies would be too powerful and no other movies would get awards again
@@gebbrielyonna7348 Agreed.
I would say that is because conservative values and femininity (being girly), are not in opposition to one another. Anyone willing to suspend their initial reaction to it being a Barbie movie and considering that Mattel tried to create interesting stories I believe can appreciate these movies on some level
I mean, as a chubby, latina kid, I never had any trouble getting into Barbie's character. Representation is nice, sure, but as a kid, I just wanted to see pretty dresses and entertaining stories, besides learning about kindness and other nice values, regardless of the "vessel's" ethnicity.
Yeah I find that idea weird too. Should I relate more to barbie because we both have blond hair? My sister has dark brown hair but is closer to Barbie's physique than I am so should she relate more to Barbie?
Plus there's the issue of branding. The main character in the movie is always blond with blue eyes, tall and thin because that's what Barbie looks like. Would it still be a 'Barbie' movie if the main character wasn't Barbie?
*THANK YOU* i'm all for diversity (when it's not forced/put there for it's own sake) but why do you need someone that looks like you/is the same sexuality as you? shouldn't their personality be WAY more important? i just don't see why people can't find someone relatable for WHO they are, rather than WHAT they are: your race/sex/sexuality shouldn't be what defines you nor should they be what defines a character and it just baffles me that people are so fixated on that (even more so when talking about kid's stuff because kids don't care about any of it: you give them a princess, they'll see a princess and they'll want to be a princess no matter what color she is because people wanna be princesses, damn it). diversity is great (media would be pretty dull without it) but it's not everything: humans are all just very silly apes in clothing, anyway.
@@JT5555 Right! It needs to be organic. In alot of the old Barbie movies (Rapunzel, Nutcracker, 12 dancing princesses, princess and the pauper) they've got a middle ages/rennasaince asthetic going on so it makes sense for the characters to look european. It'd be great if they could make old-style barbie movies in a different setting (for example ancient china) and have the characters match their setting.
Thank you! Finally, someone says it! I didn't like the movies, because she looked like me (what she doesn't at all), but about the different world she's in and the adventures. And sometimes I could identify more with side characters (like Erica, in the Princess and the Pauper) etc. In my opinion, they can be more creative with the side-characters because in my opinion, they're mostly equally likeable (except villains) as Barbie. Make the side characters diverse and let Barbie experience it! She's that nice non-judgemental person, so she would be ideal.
Honestly the part about representation threw me off. In Latin America us girls loved Barbie and who gives a damn if she doesn't look like most of us. Most of the "latina" dolls didn't make me feel represented or any sort of connection so I just clung to my favorites . Be it because I liked their aesthetic/looks or their personality (usually the Asian or black dolls).
Hell, sometimes I feel more connected to the male characters in series all the while seeing myself as a woman.
Seeing people that look like you and share physical characteristics is nice, but it's not a guarantee that you will feel connected to them.
I completely forgot how weird the kids looked in the Barbie movies lmao
Fun fact: Bratz actually rivaled Barbie in the early 2000’s, so much so that Mattel made a knockoff Bratz line (myscene).
I hade every single one
Oh god, tween me didn't even realize MyScene were Bratz ripoffs. I nagged so hard to be given one, I think my mum finally caved and gave me a Delancey doll or something
I always wondered why MyScene ans Bratz felt similar when I was a kid 🤔😆
I never knew MyScene was a Bratz response. I always liked them better though I'm probably biased because I had them in the past. However, I do want to say that the proportions are more appealing to me than the huge heads with tiny bodies
I LOVED MYSCENE
Ok but Alexa and Liana were so in love with each other. The twin dudes didn’t even really interest them. And then even had like. VOWS because of their promise over the heart necklaces. (I know it wasn’t confirmed but I cannot read that movie as not gay)
I personally headcanon alexa and liana married and the guys are just best friends with them ^^
Gotta love them cottagecore lesbians ❤️
It’s the fact the main princess dresses of the film had the lesbian and bi flag colour palettes like when else has barbie Ever wore orange fjfjjfjfnfnf it had to have been intentional
@@blush3790 Very glad for it too!
@@blush3790 Yes! Plus the rainbow imagery in several scenes... like I don't know if it was purposeful but there are so many barbie movies that were definitely queer coded and Diamond Castle is one of the biggest ones
BARBIE IN THE NUTCRACKER IS NOT A FEVER DREAM.
BARBIE IN THE NUTCRACKER IS NOT A FEVER DREAM.
THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS.
Edit:331 LIKES! Thank you!
IT WAS SO BAD BUT SO GOOD AT THE SAME TIME
I remember loving that movie so much as a little kid that I cried when we returned it to Blockbusters.
OMG I JUST COMMENTED ABOUT THIS BEFORE I EVEN READ OTHER COMMENTS LMAO
*i was so shocked when i finally saw the nutcracker live and it WASNT like the barbie movie*
Bratz Fashion Pixiez apparently like a fever dream. I mean, it's my favorite Bratz movie and have watched it a lot so I don't really get it.
As for Barbie Nutcracker, I still own a VHS of the movie xD. It's been awhile since I've watched it but I can picture the majority of it in my head. Personally I wouldn't call it a fever dream.
I think unintentionally the Barbie movies are a way to view growth from child to adult. The first few movies where about fairytales and trying to sell you a fantasy but as the movies continued and started taking place in the modern era and the magic came form an “outside source”. It basically finding joy and adventure in ones modern day life, so unintentionally this series of movies are kinda saying fairytales are great and fun but, just as much magic and whimsy exist in our real world too so theres no need to forget our childhood wonder
I think fairytales where simply still a thing in 2000, while starting from 2010 modernity started to be embraced
Hey! I am a Latin girl talking about my experience with barbie films. I was not born in the USA, in fact I am from Brazil, and I grew up with her films.
You talked about representativeness, how you felt represented by her. So I came to bring the side of a girl who did not feel represented, but still felt great affection and gratitude for Barbie.
Twelve Dancing Princesses is my favorite because of the variety of personalities they had, which was not very common at the time I was watching. The girls were radically different from each other, but that only made them better as their personalities contrasted and complemented each other. And I thought that was incredible.
The entire soundtrack of Barbie is incredible, each of the films has its music that no matter how long it goes on is still so good! It seems that they were made with so much love and dedication that I can't help but look at them with affection. I think the younger ones have lost some of that
But what made me love Barbie was mainly because of her heroism. No Barbie was saved, at least most were not, they always wanted to go after something or fight for something and even if the world tried to take them down they were still standing. I didn't need a character at that time that I could identify with, which today I am sad that I never felt represented in anything, but a character that told me that I should fight. Barbie and the three musketeers fought so hard, even though the world said they had no right to it.
Barbie inspired me not to bow my head, to dance to music in my own way and that I am able to do something to change my story. It may be difficult, but Barbie will be there to show that she is capable.
She didn't have my color, she didn't understand my problems, but even so she managed to make me stronger. She gave me hope, this is kind of embarrassing to say, to fight for myself and show the world that I am strong. I may not be like the other girls, who seem to have changed all the rules, but I am as capable as they are. Even wearing a big pink dress, I am still a capable fighter.
It may be silly, sorry, but that's how I feel.
This is the most heartfelt comment i ever read and i love it so much, as a young POC women, i also felt the same way :]
i have nothing to else to add to your perfect comment, but same!!! she may not look like me, but barbie does empower and comfort with these stories!!
Eu também sou do Brasil, me identifiquei demais com seu comentário! É assim que eu me sinto até hoje, eu cresci assistindo Barbie e continuo acompanhando todos os filmes novos ❤️
Brazilian here as well, and I couldn't have put it any better!!!!!!! I could feel represented when the brown hair barbies started appearing in the movies, but even then, I wanted to be Barbie hahahahahaha. Barbie movies were and are such an important part of introducing feminism to little girls because Barbie simply is the lead. ALWAYS. She is not a romantic interest or accessory to the protagonist and their development, she is the main character!! It validates the story of women and how we can be the leads of our stories without turning to what would be considered "boysh things", because for so long, a successful woman was a woman who acted like a man - and I don't intend any disrespect to "non-feminine women" because that's a construct men have put over us, to label us and remove any 'dimensions' or deeper sense of personality we have - but it meant the world to see these fairy-tale worlds constructed around a woman who didn't have to sacrifice some (or all) of her essence to achieve greatness.
I completely agree, as a Latina who's favorite movie is also 12 dancing princesses!!!! I understand everything you wrote, because I mostly cared about being a princess with a pretty dress. And hey the Also happened to be a dancing one.
Parents: you can’t be a ballerina
School: you can’t be a magic princess
Friends: you can’t wear pink AND swordfight
Barbie: shut the f up you can be ANYTHING
Underrated comment.
As a major Barbie fanatic who has pretty much gotten 90% of their personality from Barbie and her movies, this video was really heartwarming to watch. Growing up despite being told i wasn’t allowed to like Barbie or even watch her movies because “Barbie is for girls.” I still kept going because i saw so much of myself in her and her characters and still do even now. I might not look like her in any way, shape or form, but i still somehow managed to see all of me in her. Especially in movies like 12 Dancing Princesses, Princess and The Pauper, Swan Lake, Fairytopia and modern ones where she’s simply being Barbie which really adds onto the “Barbie is for everyone.” aspect.
12 Dancing Princesses will always be my favorite in my English major heart. It's the only Barbie fairy tale adaptation where they actually seem to have read the original fairy tale, and it manages to improve on the gender politics in a meaningful way that serves its message about sibling love and "a difference only you can make". Plus, Catherine O'Hara as the villain!
What tale was it?
One of the few good things about all girls schools: everyone knows everything about every Barbie movie ever
I have no idea how they appeared in a household with 3 boys, but I remember watching at least 2-3 barbie movies as a kid, around age 5, unironically enjoying them, and talking about it with the girls at my kindergarten. No wonder the boys started giving me weird looks in the later years.
I personally feel like the visual design in Barbie movies peaked at Mariposa & the Fairy Princess, and helps make it my favourite film out of the bunch, despite not being as nostalgic as the older ones I love. I wish they'd used that Barbie model SO much more, that's where she feels the most gorgeous. The textures in that film are honestly some of my favourites to stare at out of any movie and I've forever been in LOVE with Mariposa's wings, and how she folds them into that gorgeous butterfly dress. The environments and side characters all feel really beautiful and cleanly crafted, and I'm always so impressed whenever I watch it.
The premise is pretty basic, but I don't really go in expecting too much in the storytelling department from Barbie films. They're always just right in that regard, save for a few extra dull modern iterations that I just can't see myself watching again.
Mariposa is honestly amazing tbh. I especially liked the fact that the villain was pretty and "nice" kid me was completely blindsided by her. I had several dolls from that movie and they were pretty too
mariposa is the best barbie movie ever. fight me lol. the hting is, I can still relate to Mariposa. and the voice actor in mariposa was sooooo amazing. I love how she didn't have to change her personality at the end of the movie. She was still shy and introverted. just more confident. As a shy kid, THANKYOU.
I WANT TO HEAR HENRY'S BIBBLE VOICE. PETITION TO HEAR HENRY'S BIBBLE VOICE!!
I'm still not done watching the video so I still have hope.
Listen to the Pink Aisle and you will get your fill. :p
@@HenryKathman Omg. :000
I shall then, haha.
@@tuhtea6002 Also you can hear it at the very end of this video, it sounds frighteningly accurate👀
Even my mom loved Barbie movies. She keeps telling me that this type of content should be the things you let your children watch in the future.
I love how barbie movies almost always have a lesson attached to them. it makes the movie somewhat timeless in the sense that the main point of each of the stories will never not be relevant
Yes I love barbie movies, but my dad was so relieved when monster high came out, I'm latina, not dark skinned but definetly not white, and I had lots of barbie dolls.
But when monster high came out and I loved clawdeen wolf my dad was so happy, because she looked more like me, she was dark skinned, I was having diversity in my dolls and it was because I wanted, he loved that
@Artoria Pendragon yes, but representation matters, if you are white most dolls are for you, but specially back then there weren't lots of dolls with different races.
I loved barbie, I still do, but I look nothing like her and that's not bad, but it feels good to have something that feels like you could be them
@@saraluciaforerogarcia Teresa is Latina
@@finland4ever55 yeah, I know, I meant in the past
I just love Clawdeen for her spunky attitude, also her voice actress was amazing at portraying her.
@@saraluciaforerogarcia There are black and brown skinned “Barbie’s” but they have a different name for the doll. I never had an actual “Barbie” as in the blonde one when I was really little. I DID own several “Christy” which is the brunette “Barbie” because she looked more like me. I also liked the “Ken” dolls better and used to play with super hero action figures along side the girlier doll toys. I when I got a little older and finally got a blonde Barbie I would play “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” with her because I was a very weird child.
The title: Barbie Movies are Good, Actually
The Barbie fanbase: "That's what we've been saying!!"
Drawpinion: Hahahahaha, what kind of insane freak would watch 30-something movies for a deep dive of Barbie movies?
Also Drawpinion: *About to start the deep dive* I am, indeed, twenty-five years old. Please send help.
As kids we rarely care about race in toys like barbie until adults tell us we should care. I am glad diversity was put into the show as was excited to see the first asian representation I knew of in barbie too. I am glad they were progressive, as many companies do not care usually
Honestly I'd say that back in the day, Bratz was better than Barbie in some ways. I mean there's 4 main characters and each of them are a different ethnicity
"Fairies exist!"
*ahem* They're called Flairies. No wings.
The representation effecting how enjoyable the movies are really is a mixed bag and differs from person to person. I am someone who almost has nothing physically incoming with barbie. I'm short, have brown eyes, hair & skin, have been chubby all my life and also have a completely different cultural bg yet I absolutely loved Barbie. I'm not sure if it was due to my own ignorance, age, circumstances or world view but growing up I never saw having representation of myself being a potential issue people had and that it could actually effect their enjoyment. No one I watched ever looked similar to me but I still looked up to and followed them just the same, it was only in my late teens/early adulthood when I moved overseas did I know that this was an issue people had. Barbie was Barbie and I didn't have to be Barbie to follow her example, relate to some of her trials and enjoy her movies.
This is just my experience with this topic but that doesn't mean representation for more diverse types of people wouldn't be necessary. I'm glad people who previously didn't feel seen are able to further enjoy with more people representing them.
I’m a 16 year old boy and I love watching Barbie movies with my sister bc we used to watch them when we were kids. I also just like stereotypically “feminine” things bc they bring me joy and I don’t think I shouldn’t be allowed to like them just cause I’m not a girl ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I feel like The Barbie Diaries was made as a similar product to the Bratz movies. The animation is fairly similar and it takes place in a modern-day setting. But I have a feeling that after this was released, Mattel decided to stick with their guns and focus on their original animation.
Mattel actually made the MyScene dolls as a response to Bratz- the same sort of art style and vibe as Barbie, but more modern-day. 10/10 would recommend the web series, movies, and online games
As a boy with a younger sister I say through a bunch of these growing up and unironically liked some of them. Barbie as Rapunzel is the one I saw the most and David Kaye as the Dragon dad is such a perfect choice, considering his voice work with Transformers.
Ppl go wearing black & goth stuff and saying they are baddies to be "DifFerEnT" but have you noticed how is it RARE to find a girl who likes princess who likes pink? Who likes dolls and corsets and dresses?
12:40 Excuse Me, Those are FLAIRIES they have flair. Fairies don't come in until the sequel Barbie: Fairy Secret
I like the idea of barbie telling stories to kelly to have more representation through those stories. I don't want them to pair Barbie up with someone besides Ken romantically though cause they are pretty much the longest lasting, healthiest, positive couple in the USA and in our world of like 70% divorce rate don't break them up! 😭
Aren't they broken up since a while? I've heard of it somewhere...
@@Princess_of_cute In the 2000's they had them break up and Barbie got with this surfer dude called Blaine, but they brought them back together eventually
To be honest, I never really cared about skin color or her body, saying this as a fat 20 year old Mexican woman. Growing up with the Barbie dolls, Christmas collectable dolls and the movies and books. I just loved the character and loved how she looked, I lived her adventures and her personality. I also made up stories with the dolls I had, sometimes pretending they were other characters from Other movies and shows I watched growing up, if there was a doll i had that had blue pink and green dresses on, they were my made up powerpuff girls toys for whenever I felt like it. I'd even swap dresses for other dolls tho a lot of times I'd lose the dress or forget to switch em so they ended up naked.
I kinda favor towards older Barbie as the art style and even animation gave me a sorta "home feeling" even back then, Rapunzel, princess and the pauper, 12 dancing princesses, the fairytopia saga,, and the nutcracker were the most rewatchable ones to me.
While I'm not big on Barbie anymore, I still have some of the dolls, most of the movies, with some being a bit damaged due to my childhood carelessness, and lost all if not most of the books I had. But I still have fond memories of her, and even today with the new stuff, eh it's ok. also I never really felt the criticism wasn't a big deal. Just because she is blond and skinny doesn't mean she is harmful, people always consider blond white woman to be stupid and too girly, Barbie is a level headed kind woman who likes fashion big deal, I consider her to be one of the best female role-models more than the real life woman of today and people who nowadays try to make woman in movies and shows independent but really just give them huge egos and make them look invincible which is definitely not relatable or inspiring-
Oh lord, that brief mention of the late 80s Barbie and the Rockers movie unlocked some deep hidden childhood memories. Thank you for the sudden blast of nostalgia, I appreciate it
As a male, growing up with Barbie (toys and movies) I understood and grew an appreciation for visual and internal beauty as well as learning from traditionally feminine behaviors as thus becoming more gentle and self-aware. Also even though I’m male, I genuinely saw myself in Barbie in someway and that allowed me to grow to be more comfortable and expressive. So she (Barbie) is really an iconic fictional character that we all in some way can see ourselves and maybe reveals things to us that we otherwise wouldn’t have been taught.
When I was young I used to hate it when my cousin would put a barbie movie on, but honestly I want to rewatch island princess. If I remember correctly, some lady poisoning her daughters wedding cake and framing some random girl they picked up off of an island for murder was my favorite plot.
I don't know if it's the same for some other people but one of the reason I loved barbie so much as a kid was because she was one of the few blond character who was not portrayed as the villain/mean girl like in most of the other shows (which made me think that my blond hair was making me automatically a bad person as stupid as it is)
Barbie taught me that everyone can be a good person despite their looks in a such way lmao XDD
Despite there being not a lot of poc characters in the first handful of movies from the 2000's there were black versions of the Barbie and Ken dolls. Which I thought was pretty cool.
i just turned eighteen and i was looking back at my childhood and all the barbie movies i loved and i’m so happy this video came out right when i started getting nostalgic about it again 💕
Just turned eighteen too, and I just got the same Barbie-movie-nostalgia-vein! I've been rewatching some with my friends and it has been extremelly fun.
Your only 18😅I don't think that old at least not to me .😅but idk that's just me we all live our lives differently I suppose I say this cause I'm in my 20 I was shelter alot growing up.😓But I also get it too looking back on your childhood whatever it is feeling Nostalgic does feel and remains you of a more simpler Time .☺️I haven't seen Barbies movies in a while tho last one I saw was some review the renctly Christmas one.😅But I did really enjoy the older ones tho☺️🌺
@@kimberlybogert7031 in most countires 18 is considered when someone becomes a legal adult, so that’s why these girls (including me) think of 18 as a point in your life where people stop viewing you as a complete child.
I think barbie movies acc show that there is empowerment in femininity as opposed to most movies that tend to show the main female protagonist embrace some stereotypically masculine traits and ideals in order to be empowering (this is not to say that having typically masculine interests makes you any less of a woman just that there arent enough good/positive feminine characters in media). I understand that this def wasn't Mattel's intention but the impact is there and I wish there was more adult content that showed that femininity is not bad and that just bc you like dressing up or wearing makeup etc it doesn't mean you're siding w the patriarchy.

I AM OVERJOYED!!!!
Yessss I love how you drew our little talking heads. I Especially loved that moment before the ad break. I can't tell you how many times Henry has menaced me with the Bibble voice, it haunts my dreams....
So anyway, this video is awesome. You really highlighted a lot of things Henry and I noticed while we watched these films and I love the idea you put out about bringing back the framing device so the films can have more diverse protagonists. Thank you so much for highlighting our podcast. It's been a real joy collaborating with you.
I'm glad you liked it!! I had such a wonderful time working with you guys :D
1. 12 Dancing Princesses: the childhood favorite that still holds up. Awesome original music (Barbie's only Emmy nomination was for this movie's song, "Shine"), awesome Mendelssohn music, Catherine O'Hara shines as the villain, it honors the original story while finding creative and progressive ways to expand on it, it has the one worthwhile heterosexual romance in any of these movies, and its themes and messaging hold up about sibling love and self-esteem. Basically my only gripe with it is the bird with the Apu voice.
2. Pink Shoes: watched it as an adult, and it quickly became the second favorite. The dance sequences are lovely and serve a narrative purpose, the comedy actually makes me laugh, there are no horrifying animal sidekicks, its themes about democratizing art and self-expression carry through, and how often does a Barbie movie explicitly problematize heterosexuality?
3. Diamond Castle: if you fast forward through the Kens and the sidekicks, it may actually outrank Pink Shoes. Undoubtedly Barbie's queerest movie with excellent music, it's a fun fairy tale romp with dragons, trolls, bards, and mad goddesses. Not as thematically rich as some of the others, but a childhood gem all the same.
I remember watching this weird fairy Barbie movie where it was in the modern world but it was like this whole different reality where the fairy’s could just crossover from their reality to Barbies, then they had to save ken?? It was such a fever dream movie
Ah, yes. A Fairy Secret. It really is a fever dream. 😂
The fact that she even said in the DVD home screen she was playing as these characters blew my mind. Like, I was watching a movie of a movie.
They encouraged pretty good lessons for girls in retrospect and I loved them as a kid
Barbie as Rapunzel, the Swan Princess and Nutcracker were some of my favorite movies as a little kid and I still think they were good and have revisited them occasionally. Am 26 years old.
Imagine being a big enough dork to have a Barbie podcast. Couldn't be me, amiright?
ALSO 12 DANCING PRINCESS ISN'T AS GOOD AS THE OTHERS, I WILL NOT CHANGE MY MIND
I'll fight you
That’s the only episode of yours I haven’t watched yet because I’m so offended by the thesis. Seriously, what do you see in Rapunzel and Pegasus that I’m missing?
Henry!! :DD
love ur moomin vids :]
Objectively bad opinion
@@stickwashere5248 Thank you! I'm sure if you enjoyed my Moomin Vids, you will enjoy what I have to say on the Pink Aisle.
Haven't even watched the video yet but as someone who grew up with the old Barbie films-
Yes, agreed. They are amazing. 🏳️🌈💐🎉
Ok I loved the video. HOWEVER In 'Barbie A Fashion Fairytale' The magical creatures that come out of the wardrobes are not Fairies they are Flairies. In the movie it is stated that Fairies have wings. The magical creatures in question have no wings and in their words have 'flair'. Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk.
I think I have a perfect solution
Diamond Castle or Mariposa sequel, bam the main characters can be as gay as they want cuz neither of them is barbie, any new character that is introduced can include representation, they are going back into their magical roots that I bet a lot of people would love
YES. YES, FINALLY I FOUND SOMEONE ELSE WHO LIKES THE BARBIE MOVIES
I used to own every single dancing princess and I could name them off by heart. Dolls lost, names forgotten, heart sad. Gonna go watch it again and recapture that nostalgia
I always loved Barbie, but watching only blond girls living adventures made me mad as a kid😂😂😂 in Barbie and the Diamonds castle I was soooooo happy to see a dark haired girl, it almost became my favourite Barbie movie. Same happened in Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses, the magic of Pegasus, a Christmas carol.... wow that made me happy, I felt like I was actually in the movie!!
My Barbie childhood was primarily focused on the Fairytopia saga. We watched Mermadia I don't know HOW many times, but the first one (which we have on VHS) will always be my favourite
Barbie movies used to come out annually right around my birthday so I’d always watch them.
Also that one movie, magic of pegasus I think, has 3D scenes and the tape only came with 2 pairs of 3D glasses. I had 2 sisters so when we watched that movie we would always fight to see who got the Barbie glasses and who had to wear the sharkboy and lavagirl glasses
*Fun Fact:* The beloved Barbie doll was actually inspired by an R-Rated German doll called _Bild Lilli._ It was originally marketed as a racy gag gift that men could buy a tobacco shops, and now it became extremely popular with children.
I am obsessed with The Barbie Diaries. It’s not a good movie. It’s dated, it’s cliche, static, and not much effort is put into it. That doesn’t matter. The Barbie Diaries has a place in my heart and there’s no logical reason why.
Some movies are so bad that they’re good lol
Same! It was one of the reasons I looked forward to high school lol.
I remember my cousin used to be so embarrassed about the fact that he loved these movies because he was a boy and they were... barbie. Until he met his now wife, I found out from her that when they were still dating she stumbled over his old barbie DVD collection and knew he would be "the one."
The only reason I watched so many Barbie movies was because back then all of them were on youtube for free XD
Waching the Barbie clips in the background makes me feel i waching a Sims gameplay.
Fan fact: Mariposa is the only character, played by barbie, with brown eyes
(Please correct me if i am wrong)
a 41 minute video from drawpinion? am i dreaming? i thought i just woke up from my nap!
Barbie movies were one of the reasons I could learn english as a child.. We didn't have any dubbed versions of it in my country so I used to watch it in english on repeat..
The older ones are classic. I did watch some new ones, but I prefer the old ones. Rapunzel is definitely my favorite, and while I shouldn't compare the Disney version with the barbie version, I still will say, that I love the Barbie version more.
Barbie in the Nutcracker, as my first Barbie movie, shall always remain my favorite.
I watched the Barbie movies up to 12 Dancing Princesses/Fairytopia/Magical Pegasus. I don't remember the exact order. So many memories. I am an adult, but I still want the Sugar Plum Princess barbie doll cause I personally think she's gorgeous
You can 't tell me the two main girls from the diamond castle aint gay.
their dresses are literally the bi and lesbian flags 😂
@Artoria Pendragon Thats probably what they were intended to be, that still doesn't change that they are the colors of the bi and lesbian flag lmao
The Fairytopia movies and 12 Dancing Princesses are so nostalgic for me
I have so much nostalgia of being a kid and getting super excited to rent (back when video stores were a thing) the newest Barbie movie each year. If the quality of the films stayed past the 2010s I would have continued to watch them
I've got one Barbie doll when I was little. For some reason she always played the villain in my story... Idk. I just liked to cast stuff animals as good guys. The doll is kind of stiff and I probably didn't like it for that reason.
But I'm sure I was just one kiwi in the sea of oranges. As soon as another girl came to play with me, I was obliged to make Barbie one of the good guys (and a princess) because she obviously liked her very much. I was even more surprised when I saw five dolls from Barbie series while visiting one of my classmates. She took such a good care of her toys that I actually felt bad for my doll.
I wasn't growing up in America, tho. Haven't watched any Barbie movies until I was 20 or so. Might be one of the reasons to cast Barbie doll as villain tbh.
as an artist or a creative, the barbie rapunzel movie wasn't just one of my favorite barbie movies (along with barbie princess and the pauper), but it was also one of those pieces of media that got me into art in the first place.
Honestly, if I ever have a daughter, I will introduce her into these movies and will start with my favorite one. That favorite is the 12 dancing princesses.
Barbie life in the dream house slaps hard my top fave mini series to be honest
I think representation is always important and I understand that as someone who was represented as Barbie you might not be able to say that people who weren't as represented got as much out of it. But as a POC plus size girl who was tomboyish and nearly hated pink, I never watched a Barbie movie and felt left out like that. I think there should be diverse people in all senses because it's just more realistic but that doesn't mean Barbie couldn't/can't be a role model in some sense. I always looked at her attributes and never colour etc.
And I think the idea to have Barbie in a way narrate another character is a good one but then they run into people saying that Barbie is telling stories that aren't hers and in a way focusing it on herself etc. I would like to see them try it though.
I love that Tim Curry played Cardinal Richleau in both the 90s Three Musketeers and in Barbie’s Three Musketeers
I’m 30 and I just started watching through them and I’m enjoying them and a large chunk of them hold up fairly well. I have no nostalgia and didn’t watch any of them as a kid because I internalized that anything girly was bad and inferior so avoided Barbie like the plague. I’m glad that I’m watching them now.
I think it's incredible how I'm not even legally allowed to drive/drink yet and still watched ALL Barbie movies in existence. Even before I was born my father bought the films for when his daughter would be old enough to watch them and that's literally so cute, idk I love Barbie still and your videos give me a bit of that childhood feeling back
As a fifteen year old who still loves Barbie movies, I really appreciate this video! I can’t imagine how long it took to edit.
Me, a 21 year old who just bought a stack of barbie movies from the thrift store:
Yes, I think I will continue to enjoy the nostalgia of Barbie movies lollll
Actually, even in the early movies, Barbie took action to rescue herself and others.^^
okay so I am currently only halfway through this video at the moment and I just finished the bit where you talk about romance and like (great video by the way) I just want to say that as an adult rewatching these films it is no wonder I turned out a lesbian. Like the barbie franchise may pretend to have straight romance, but almost every film has Sapphic energy. I totally did not care about any of the weddings in the movies and often found myself wanting the main girl characters to to get together instead because they were much more developed and had so much chemistry compared to how flat and hollow the male characters often felt. One of the most popular pairings I've seen in the barbie fandom is Elina and Nori because they just had that really great dynamic together. There are other examples like Annalise and Erica or Liana and Alexa. They're just so so very Sapphic
*cough* personally my Sapphic guilty pleasure is Elina and Laverna *cough*
I can’t exaggerate how happy it makes me that the recent movies aren’t including the romantic subplots (this goes for kids movies in general). I grew up with movies whose happy endings were the main couple getting together or married associating romance with the only way to be truly happy. Which caused my young self a *lot* of distress when I realized I didn’t experience attraction.
So it makes me sooooo happy knowing that the next generation will have less exposure to that damaging idea. Romance is not the secret to happiness
Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Rapunzel. Those three were part of my childhood.
On the point of representation, if you look at the toy line of the 12 dancing princesses a few of the dolls actually featured darker skin tones.
Now I personally think that's absolutely hilarious considering, well, that all of the characters have the same genetic pool.
I think the problem was never that mattel didn't try to have representation, after all children are more enclined to buy dolls that look like themselves.
The problem was rather the focus on the white characters as the main protagonist, with anyone else being put into the background.
The oldest sister, whose the darkest skinned, takes after the mom who is also darker skinned as seen on the portrait. (They're still 'white' but more a south European/Theresa doll white rather than the northern european fair blonde) And there are several well-known real life cases of twins or siblings being totally different skincolors due to their parents looking totally different.
I actually started rewatching the Barbie movies because I found out that Kelly Sheridan (Sango in Inuyasha) and the late Kirby Marrow (who played Miroku) played Barbie and Ken for a good majority of those films 😆🤣 A lot of them were enjoyable to watch but it might be my nostalgia glasses talking too.
What!!!😳 You are 25. Damn it, now I feel my self as a old fart, because I turn this year 30 years old...😟 😓
nah nah nah stop the cap your are like 15 or 16 not so damn 30 years old furry
@@goneforevers Well I was born July 1991.
@@HautaAntero ok cap.
Hey it ok I'm 26and I like most stuff meant for little kids..heck I didn't start getting plushies again til I was 20.😅So don't feel bad ok you do you:)🌺
Whenever our family talks about ballet, my mom will always bring up the fact that my sister and I had our first introduction from Barbie Swan Lake and Nutcracker when we were like, eight.
"Barbie is whatever you want her to be"
My Decaying Mind: ADORA, SUE ME
These movies were so fascinating that we're still watching them as adults. I don't think that they are too childish. You can never be too old to learn the importance of courage, friendship and being true to yourself!
Loved the drinking game 21
I also watched every Barbie movie in order when I was maybe 18? While It’s true I was the target demographic at the point a lot of them were being released, my religious parents didn’t let us kids watch much of anything!
So I can’t really even say I have nostalgia for them. I understood going into them that they wouldn’t be cinematic masterpieces, and enjoyed most of them for what they were. I even love some of them! Since then, more have been released , and I should check them out. I didn’t finish some of the Barbie and her Sisters movies admittedly. I just couldn’t sit through them. I DID like the newer dolphin adventure one though, so maybe I should try them again.
I'm a trans guy and 16 at this point but my friends and me still talk about our favorite Barbie movies. There's nothing wrong with enjoying them. They're just great and there's something for everyone.
It's always fun to talk about our top 10 picks.
The bit about color palettes corresponding to LGBTQ flags was the perfect sending note. Awesome vid, made me want to take a look at that scifi barbie movie...
I remember seeing a popular Tumblr post about it.
im remembering watching Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 1 and 2 on repeat daily as a child . .
THEY WERE SO GOOD FOR NO REASON ?
I also loved uh, I CANT REMEMBER
but hey, one thing i loved was seeing the same characters but changed up and crap, i loved the tv show and everything and i knew like all of the characters SJDFJS
What doomed the movies into following a formula and becoming a bit stale and more reliant on cliches was the writers and directors being hired for several movies in a row. One particular writer had to make screenplays for eight Barbie movies one after the other, and in total she wrote 14 scripts. Anyone in that situation would end up bored, specially in a franchise were the main goal was and always will be selling dolls
I don’t even remember when or how I watched these films as a kid but they’re now one of the few good memories of my childhood
Even though I'm guy, I did watch Princess and the Pauper when I was a young kid and I'm not ashamed of my childhood.
I think it would be great if Mattel did what they have done on the Barbie YT channel: realism and relatability. Characters like Spider-Man are so popular because they are so relatable. I remember last year when all the BLM stuff was majorly going on, Barbie had her black friend on and they talked about racism in an easy to understand way and were able to talk about how racism is bad. They made a gender neutral doll line. Why can't we have more movies that show Barbie learning about real problems and how to handle them with a more expanded cast? I'd watch the shit out of those kinds of movies.
I would pay to watch it but I don't think Mattel would listen since they never do
@@ericafrauneopeniano2372 The LEGO Movie 2 is made to sell toys much like its predecessor, and that was able to touch on realistic and relatable themes, such as superficial views of maturity and the importance of communication. I think Mattel could easily get away with doing it.
I think I liked early Barbie movies simply because it was full of adventure and fantasy. I can’t speak for everyone but I think I prefer it that way.
Yay new drawpinion!!! Thanks for being awesome as always!!
This was amazing! I've been waiting for someone to make a video like this for like... two years now
