Just because we in the comments are picking apart the implied gayness doesn't mean we're trying to make it sexual. (What does being gay have to do with "not being for kids anyway? Hmm?) It's actually a very interesting video, I'd recommend a watch when you have spare time, because why not.
The guys in Diamond castle are there to show little girls that just because someone hits on you doesn't mean you have to date them, even if they go on an advemture for you, you don't owe them a relationship.
@@meahdahlgren6537 that's up to interpretation, since it's never explicitly stated that their relationship is romantic you are free to interpret them however you like. I don't think there's a platonic interpretation for the lyrics of "two voices one song" but that's just my interpretation.
Barbie Mariposa And The Fairy Princess is literally a wlw romance, a sapphic retelling of Romeo and Juliet. All of Mariposa and Princess Catania's interactions are romantic tropes: they go on a date, practice rock skipping, exchange gifts so they can always remember each other, dance together at a ball, help each other face their insecurities...the entire movie is so gay that when the forced heterosexual romance happens at the end, it feels like Mattel straight up slapping a "no homo tho"
Ughhhhh I hated that she danced with Carlos so much. I always shipped Carlos and Willa as a kid because they had so many better moments and interactions than Mariposa and Carlos. Mariposa and Carlos seemed like besties but nothing more, so I never liked them being paired together
I'm not trying to ruin anyone's headcanon, but is exchanging gifts automatically a romantic trope? I say this because in the movie Red Heat, the two cops exchange their watches, because Schwarzenegger's character claimed it was a russian tradition to exchange gifts to remember each other... although, when i think about it, it is incredibly easy to make a headcanon of Schwarzenegger's character in the movie as being gay! If anyone wants to make a queer reading of a 1980's movie featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Belushi, i'm all for it!
@@bernardomarkuskampffdemelo4323 I totally agree with that. I feel like a lot of "romantic" are just things that you can do with your friends especially in different countries they do different things. Like kissing eachother on the cheek is a common greeting between friends in other countries. Whenever I go to Mexico I'm always greeted with two kisses regardless of gender. But here in the US it's seen as a very romantic thing or something only done from mother to young child. Or holding hands, in places like Japan holding your best friends hand is common and here it's a romantic thing too. I was always confused how everyone saw The Diamond Castle as "super gay" because Alexa and Liana reminded me of me and my best friend. To me they just seemed to have a very sisterly relationship and maybe it's because I was raised in a household that was very close and hugs and kisses were normal. Maybe it's because I grew up showing affection constantly that affection to me appears very different to me than it does to other people idk
What is a soft sapphic? If you don't mind explaining. English is not my first language. I do know the word sapphic, I just don't know what a soft sapphic is supposed to be.
Diamond Castle is a fascinating movie because even though Barbie movies were becoming increasingly feminist with “Princess and the Pauper” and “Island Princess” having female allies, it was the first movie in the franchise to try and turn from romantic subplots altogether. You can tell that the introduction of the boys and the blatant friendzoning of them is meant only to subvert expectations and draw attention, but because of the complete 180, it just makes it seem like Liana and Alexa are in love with each other. Something tells me they dialed back on this approach in later films because of its unintentional implications.
Pretty sure there was someone on the writing team of diamond caslte who wanted to push the limits of how many gay metaphors they could sneak into the movie. The rainbow bridge was definitely not written by someone who is clueless about the implications.

Regarding Ken being gay, I remember at one point to increase Ken doll sales, some of the designers looked at what they thought was popular at the time and ended up looking at gay club fashion & giving Ken a cockring. It ended up gaining a lot of popularity with gay ppl at the time, but was quickly pulled from shelves once they realized what they did. As a kid watching the older Barbie movies obsessively I never understood why the dude love interest was nessicary. Like it didn't even cross my mind that the whole hetero romance was a huge plot point- I just wanted more over the main female leads being together and caring about each other. It's incredible no one figured out I was gay till like two weeks ago.
one thing that makes these movies resonate with me so much is the lack of male gaze, most barbie movies are focused heavily on female relationships, women supporting each other and being there for one another, that makes them really comforting for me as a wlw
I took me so long to realize that even as a kid I thought the plot was, Lydia felt pushed out of the romantic threesome she was in so she turned her former partners to stone then a friend asked a different couple to help them to return to their normal life (missing some things it's been a while since I last watched the move). I thought it was wlw causing the whole plot.

Fairytopia trilogy is interesting in that Elina doesn't have a love interest, in the first one they try to make Prince Nalu smitten, but they backpedal on this in the sequel by showing he has feelings for Nori and Elina just isn't interested. And earlier, the oracle confronted the two about what really matters to them: Nori's love for Nalu and Elina's identity as a fairy.
And what about Linden in "Magic of the Rainbow"? As a kid, this was the obvious shipping with Elina....I mean, there is no official love interest, but this was my own interpretation and I don't think that Elina is supposed to be an icon in this matter. nd Fairies is a difficult comparison, because fairies are actually rarely depcited in love, marrying or having babies at all.... I mean, in the past, you couldn't have a male best friend, without regarded as being in love (or you couldn't touch a man's hand without being engaged - in the past). But hey, it is friendship between girls, and not each caring act or friendly word makes one gay; and apart from Diamond Castle, I think we shouldn't interpret too much in it. Somehow, I 'm perhaps old-fashioned, but I was never thinking before of Liana and Alexa being kind in love with each other. I didn't like the movie as a kid because I missed a love story. I just knew that the boys weren't a match for them. And I could now accept this "connection" as somehow gay. For the rest of Barbie movies; I just think friendship-love (Greek: philia) or or caring-involved love (Greek: Agape) shouldn't be interpreted as erotical love interest (Greek: Eros) Because all is love in my opinion, as much one could love animals or books (and feels it on a certain way). But I just don't like it when everywhere the rainbow is interpreted as gay symbol, even if it is used as it;I love all the colors in the rainbow, but colorful doesn't mean automatically queer and trans and bi-sexual. Love is much more than being a couple, because love has many shades.
You know what Barbie character i believe might actually be canonically aroace? One of her sisters! She seems a lot more interested in gadgets than romance, something that was once explicitally shown in a joke!
another thing to note! In Barbie: A Christmas Charol, I noticed that Eden only really blows up in the beginning when she walks in on [dude-who-I-already-forgot-the-name-of] flirting with Catherine. Although it's never stated, I always read that as Eden becoming jealous that her best friend/love interest was becoming closer with him than with her. That's just a small detail I thought I'd point out, feel free to add your own thoughts
That scene is sooo interesting, especially rewatching it with the knowledge that Eden is a victim of childhood abuse. She has no idea how to express her own feelings healthily, so she ends up lashing out at Catherine and focusing on smaller details like the crumpets instead of communicating clearly and healthily that she is afraid that Catherine will leave her alone.
YES. It was also very telling that Catherine is the major driving force of ALL of her Past, Present and Future segments. She’s the one consistent source the Spirits direct Eden’s change of heart to as she was the one positive constant throughout her life.
I can't believe you didn't mention Barbie Dolphin Magic, that movie is the epitome of gay, Barbie spends the entire movie bonding and having fun with her mermaid girlfriend, showing her the human world. Ken is also in the movie but he's NOT barbie's love interest at all, he's presented as barbie's friend
Barbie and the diamond castle ends with them living together without the two guys in a cottage surrounded by flowers. Like- there’s no heterosexual explanation for that
Can I just say I'm team Willa and Carlos. They spend way more time together then Carlos and Mariposa. And the diamond castle? even at 22 I totally called it
As a kid, I never knew how queer was the media I saw, mostly because I didn’t know what being queer was when I was young. I found about LGBTQ+ towards the end of my childhood and realized that I’m pansexual through Pokémon Oras.
I can't believe A Fairy Secret didn't at least get an honorable mention 😔. But also wait until OP finds out in the vlogs Barbie listed her celebrity crushes as Zendaya and Taylor Swift
They literally oozed mlm vibes. There's a shot where the prince guy rolls over on the ground and looks after the village guy with the least straight look I've ever seen in my life.
Fun fact! I actually discovered that gay people existed by watching Barbie’s The Princess and the Pauper when I was 3, and I for some reason interpreted the double wedding at the end as the two lead Barbies getting married to EACH OTHER. I guess you could call it my first ever ship lmao
You forgot to mention about how in princess adventure they had a whole gay anthem saying that black and white is for classic movies and encouraging viewers to leave their life colourfully 😂💙
@@delilahjohnson9953 Uhh, no? It may not have much to do with anything, for you that is. But people of the community can find something that represents them even in the tinniest way possible. And I’m sure the eighty three people that liked my comment so far can agree on that.
I also feel like it should be discussed that many of the earlier films also give barbie and/or her friends a hinted at neurodivergency. Key examples being Mariposa and Princess Charm school, with autism and adhd respectively. Maybe this isn't as popular, but it feels like its a discussion that could be had
I think the argument for Ken being gay might have more to do with the design of a certain Ken doll that wore a certain item hanging from his neck which is usually worn by gay men,
Henna also didn't seem to have or thought she needed any friends. So why would she go out of her way to be so kind to Mariposa if she didn't at least like her romantically just a little bit? She also wanted to rule the kingdom alone with only the monsters (I forgot their name sorry) by her side. And they didn't really know each other before the first scene of them talking. So how could Henna possibly have known in advance that Mariposa potentially could turn out to become a good ally to have?
I mean a villian having a crush on the hero is such an interesting concept in general. I really love it and I ship it 🥰 Also she had no idea that Mariposa could be a threat. She was very shocked and unprepared when she saw that Mariposa had the flower to heal the queen so it's not like she was kind to her because she knew that she had the potential to stop her. Not to mention that she wanted Mariposa to join her even though Henna already took the flower away and almost won, she didn't need Mariposa's help at all so why did Henna try to get her to join her and why didn't Henna try to get someone else to join her? Henna definetely wanted Mariposa to like her because she had a crush on her, I don't really see another logical explanation for the special attention Henna gives her
@@delilahjohnson9953 I’m sorry you see gay people as strictly sexual. I’m a gay person, and I find sex repulsive. I watched this on repeat when I was younger, and it was one of my favorite movies. I liked it because I loved the plot, the colours, and the dresses. I liked the relationship between the girls, but I never saw it as sexual. I saw it as two people loved each other and were happily living together. It could be a platonic or romantic love. Odette and the fairy queen (I can't stand Derek because he seemed to be too focused on Odette's looks while the fairy queen seemed to be a lot more protective and caring about Odette and I just like them more lol) 4. Henna and Mariposa (the attention Henna gives to Mariposa makes it obvious that she has a crush on her there also isn't a good enough reason why else she would be so fascinated with her) 5. Eden and Katherine (it's clear how important they were to each other and how much patience Katherine has with Eden is very special and definetely not something you have for everyone. The Barbie movies are literally that historical guy thats like "Yeah, these two BEST FRIENDS were such GOOD FRIENDS that they lived together and stayed together".
I've had this discussion before but not here so I'll say it again, Barbie is such a girly show that it completely eliminated male recognition because no guy was watching it, when barbie wears a pretty dress it's because she wants to wear the pretty dress and she feels good in the pretty dress, not because she needs to appeal to some guy or change herself, and that's why so many people think she's part of the lgbtq+ community. In addition she is also portrayed as very strong, reasonable, and capable, she has had tons of jobs, compromises and understands others needs and what makes them comfortable, and when she feels something is wrong she takes action against it. As a kid I never saw it but I always imagined Barbie to put bigoted people in their place because that's the kind of character I saw in her, a strong, independent but understanding, role model that I could aspire to be

'The Diamond Castle' as the movie started, Barbie and her friend Teresa told the story of Alexa and Liana. Maybe Barbie and Teresa showed their relationship through Alexa and Liana in the story who might be gay/bi. Hmmm.... 🤔🤔
And also I think, about the whole following traditions thing, that it can stand as (as well as so mamy other barbie movies) an allegory for how afab individuals are socialized to stick to norms and to be obedient and follow tradition. A theme Barbie is inherently pushing against (her many careers and such. Which I love whoever was in charge of all that because they went "hey, we have a popular toy whose main demographic is little girls that gives them an outlet to express themselves. Let's use that to empower generationsof young women." (not that only girls can play with dolls. Just I'm pretty sure that's what happened. Especially since children project their self image onto their toys.) And then they did. And it was great.) but she doesn't reject her feminity to do so. Barbie embraces her feminity unapologetically and tenfold. In fact, if I had to think of a representation of hyper-feminity let alone feminity I don't think I could come up with a better candidate. She also takes care of her sisters, but the people in charge or her brand have never once push or implied the idea that she had to have children and they give off this idea that she doesn't want children or has never even thought about it. AND EVERYONE IN AND OUTSIDE OF HER UNIVERSE IS COMPLETELY OK WITH THAT!! And it's awesome. And god, I could talk about this all day.
I always liked the friendship of the girls and wanted to pretend the boys didn't exist. Turns out I'm aroace. It's fun shipping it now, whether romantic or queer-platonic.
There's one ship from Barbie movies that I shipped before I knew what shipping meant. Elina and Nori from "Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia". Because, as we all know, the second-best way of resolving a love triangle is ignoring the axis (my favourite one being putting them in the polyamorous relationship, but I feel that Nalu is friendzoning them both way too much for this to work). Now, what this says about my slight addiction to enemies to lovers is debatable.
I can remember that I played with barbie dolls a lot but I never had a Ken doll. So I just cut one of the dolls hair and made them kiss. Besties I made barbie gay before I even knew what that means
I did the same except with a Sindy doll who my mum had given a shorter haircut to. I eventually got a Prince Charming but then, most of the storylines followed one character who wasn't interested in guys and all the 'popular' girls head over heels for him, not understanding why the main girl wasn't as well I don't think me being ace was really that surprising
We all know that they added guys in diamond castle, because those two are the peak of cottagecore girlfriends

We need Mariposa 3 where it's revealed that Prince Carlos was gay all along too
Ughhhhh I hated that she danced with Carlos so much. I always shipped Carlos and Willa as a kid because they had so many better moments and interactions than Mariposa and Carlos. Mariposa and Carlos seemed like besties but nothing more, so I never liked them being paired together
@@DrawpinionDump YESSS, OMG
Liana and Alexa are just soft sapphics and nothing can make me think otherwise.

You said before that you didn't even watch the video.
Elina is the trans aro/ace icon we all need

I really love it and I ship it 🥰
Also she had no idea that Mariposa could be a threat. If every simple song I wrote to you

Our friends would all make fun of us
And we'll just laugh along because we know
That none of them have felt this way
Delilah, I can promise you
That by the time we get through
The world will never ever be the same
And you're to blame

My personal top 5 gay Barbie pairings (it's very biased):
1. Liana and Alexa (obviously, I don't think I have to explain that)
2. Elina and Azura (I know a lot of people ship Nori and Elina but I'm fine with Nori and Nalu and I think Azura and Elina had a deeper connection)
3. Odette and the fairy queen (I can't stand Derek because he seemed to be too focused on Odette's looks while the fairy queen seemed to be a lot more protective and caring about Odette and I just like them more lol)
4. Henna and Mariposa (the attention Henna gives to Mariposa makes it obvious that she has a crush on her there also isn't a good enough reason why else she would be so fascinated with her)
5. Eden and Katherine (it's clear how important they were to each other and how much patience Katherine has with Eden is very special and definetely not something you have for everyone. The way they positively influence each other is also very sweet and gay)
Of these, the only one I struggle with is the Odette and fairy Quuen. Maybe it's because she has a squad of animal children around her I always saw her as more of a mother figure to Odette. She also looks to be more mature and I think Odette is fairly young so I don't know how to feel about the pairing.
@@brunoss.3273 tbh it's mainly because I dislike Derek and the fairy queen doesn't seem that much older to me. I think her maturity comes from the responsibility she has as a queen rather than age. In the german version she calls Odette "My beautiful" one time, I don't know what she says in the english version but I thought it was so sweet that I started shipping them since I wasn't a fan of Derek lol
@@isabelzuka4438 it's been a few years since I watched the Portuguese version (haven't seen the English one) but she comes across as very motherly. Maybe the German or English version doesn't do that though.

Not only can you not spell barbie without bi, but also like 80% of the time the main group make's up the bi flag/resembles it :)
I've probably shipped Mariposa and Princess Catania ever since first watching the movie that they're both in, not knowing that I didn't just ship them platonically. Now I'm a queer teenager and I actually know about the LGBTQ+ Community's existence, and just...yeah, they're gay for each other. They're just- they're not straight.
This is the kind of narrative analysis I live for
The diamond castle was the first Barbie movie I saw and I noticed how gay liana and Alexa were which out right surprised me that they went there. The twins were hilarious through the whole movie as well.
Watching this after barbie was confirmed bi/pan and had a girlfriend brings me so much joy. She's been there from the very bi-ginning :)

okay but do any of you guys remember that movie where Ken was kidnapped by fairies and would have to marry the fairy princess because she was under a spell?
Raquelle and Barbie were during almost the whole movie big rivals and they both wanted to save ken so Barbies Stylists who also happened to be fairies decided to bring them into the fairy world.
and there were moments where Barbie and Raquelle acknowledged each others strenghts and complimented those (for example: when they were riding those unicorns Barbie pointed out how good raquelle is af riding and how she trusts raquelle to lead the way)
this and that happened they ended up in magic prison bubbles that couldn’t break, that was when Barbie and Raquelle opened up to each other on how Barbie always wanted to talk to raquelle but thought raquelle hated her and how Raquelle thought Barbie wouldn’t like her because she got popular so fast and raquelle even said how she always admired her and wanted to be her friend-
and their love and admiration for each other just destroyed that prison😟

I knew the diamond castle was my fav barbie movie as a kid for a reason :’)
In Barbie Life In a Dreamhouse Ken & Ryan were enemies to lovers
Yes
Truee
SO TRUE
As a kid I never saw it but I always imagined Barbie to put bigoted people in their place because that's the kind of character I saw in her, a strong, independent but understanding, role model that I could aspire to be
Gof thank you someone finally made this video. I had the “connected song “ stuck in my head for years and didn’t figure out why until I saw my little sisters watching that movie
I also love the idea of Barbie being a lesbian and Ken being gay and them being childhood friends (because we all know that we are like magnets, I cannot even count the amount of childhood friends of mine ended up being part of the community as well) and every one around them being like "you are soulmates" "you need to date!" and them being like "suuuureeee... of course..."
They strike me as gay friends who would go to prom together.
I remember watching diamond castle as a child and being so irritated by the twin brothers and not knowing why
The Christmas Carol reminded me deeply of me and my gf and I nearly cried. Thank you ❤️
i was literally going to twit about Alexa and Barbie being obviously gay 0_o u reading my mind lol

Delilah Johnson WELLL i think everyone who liked and enjoyed the video kinda cares, only what i see, that YOU have a problem with it. If queer representation is sexualization in a kids media, then heterosexual relationships too, by logic of your comment. Really i ask you very politely to do a research, because i think you need to
@@delilahjohnson9953 I don't think you know much about child development, or science and your basic logic sounds more like "common" sense, which tends to be very subjective to your social circle or at most culture.
How do you know those boys don't just want to be her friends? Plus is Barbie or her fellow protagonists children? I was under the impression she's an adult or at youngest an older teen, so she should know about sexuality. Plus she might be ace and her female friend as well and just be in a romantic relationship with each other, without a sexual dimension.

This was awesome! Also I love how at the start and you're talking about how Barbie can be pretty gay, all of the clips match up with like: Barbie being incredibly close and touchy with other women, Barbie surrounded by rainbows, Barbie coming out of an actual closet
What's sad about this is that if Mattel actually makes a movie with actual LGBTQ representation, I'm 100% sure they're gonna forget how good they were at being subtle about it and they're gonna make ONE queer character who's entire character description is "is queer"
6:45
"They end up bonding"
Me: Don't you dare-
My brain: We had a *bonding moment!*
This is the perfect end most Drawpinion Dump ending to the Barbie Trilogy.
Also 2:19 is literally Barbie coming out of the closet.
As boring cis hetero girl, I love the relationship between Lyanna and Alexa even more after rewatching the film again and seeing all the LGBT+ subtexts. It makes the film even more iconic than I've remembered it to be.

I think an "Are They Gay: Barbie Edition" should exist
Brotp is my new favourite word
I think theres a potential for a similar analysis for the relationship between Cassandra and Rapunzel in the Disney Tangled animated series.
Yes, so much yes! No offense to Eugene, but I wish they were together. (And yes, Ik Rapunzel has two hands and that’s valid, but I’d rather it just be Cassunzel)
In Barbie Rapunzel Penelope is Casssandra but I don’t ship Rapunzel and Penelope I ship Rapunzel and Stefan
Barbie and the Diamond Castle walked so Cottage-core could run.
I love this video so much.
(Notes on Princess Charm School being gay: Blair/Sophia and Delancy are canonically cousins so idk how I feel about them being connected in that way, but Isla and Hadley/Portia and Delancy are 100% dating)
How about Lorraine and Josette they are more dating and together than Hadley and Isla or Delancy and Portia Blair is not lesbian because she has Nicholas
dude i completely agree with you, blair and delancy should NEVER be shipped considering they’re cousins but i love those other ships sm
Don't forget the Diamond Castles infamous line
"All we have is bread and jam"
"Annnnd JAm aNd BreAd"
i remember watching barbie & the diamond castle so much when i was younger, even before i figured out i was sapphic. looking back, i feel like this movie shaped my thoughts surrounding wlw relationships into a positive thing in a way (especially because i've grown up in a very unsupportive household). when the world was full of judgment, barbie movies always comforted me.
Someday that slow, melodic "I wanna talk....about...." is gonna be iconic
I will die saying that Elina from the Fairytopia films is the Aspec (and disabled) representation we never knew we had
Me as kid: GO GET YOU PRINCE
Me as a teen: GO GET YOUR PRINCESS
Even as a child, it did make me wonder that she hung around with females so frequently and how they were so much more important to her than boys.
'The Diamond Castle' as the movie started, Barbie and her friend Teresa told the story of Alexa and Liana. Maybe Barbie and Teresa showed their relationship through Alexa and Liana in the story who might be gay/bi. Hmmm.... 🤔🤔
I was thinking the same
Diamond Castle is a true classic!
The fact i literally watched all five of these, plus the honorable mentions, multiple times as a child
*how did i not realize sooner?*

Mariposa and Katanya managed to save the kingdom’s beacon with their gifts to eachother because they were full of the POWER OF LUVVVVV
Just so you know, Blair and Delancy from Princess Charm School are cousins so they shouldn’t be shipped lol
EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS- like why is nobody talking about this they’re COUSINS
I can remember that I played with barbie dolls a lot but I never had a Ken doll. So I just cut one of the dolls hair and made them kiss. Besties I made barbie gay before I even knew what that means
SAME i never thought to make them kiss (#catholicupbringing check) but i literally refused to buy male dolls
when i was younger i didnt have enough male monster high dolls to make a 'love school' so i just made all my girl dolls kiss and sleep in the same bed
I did the same except with a Sindy doll who my mum had given a shorter haircut to. I eventually got a Prince Charming but then, most of the storylines followed one character who wasn't interested in guys and all the 'popular' girls head over heels for him, not understanding why the main girl wasn't as well
I don't think me being ace was really that surprising
