- 🏃Beatrice Chebet Smashes 10,000m World Record to Win Kenyan Olympic Trials at Pre Classic
Beatrice Chebet set a new world record in the women’s 10,000 meters at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic on Saturday morning, clocking in at 28:54.14. This remarkable performance not only shattered the previous record of 29:01.03 but also made her the first woman to break the 29-minute barrier on the track (two women have broken 29 minutes for 10k on the roads). With this victory, Chebet, a silver medalist at the 2022 World Championships and a bronze medalist at the 2023 World Championships in the 5,000 meters, secured her spot on the Kenyan Olympic team as the race served as the Kenyan Olympic trials.
Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia, the 5,000m world record holder, led for 22 laps but finished second in 29:05.92, making her the third-fastest woman in history over this distance. Lilian Rengeruk, who won silver behind Chebet at the World Cross Country Championships in March, earned the second spot on the Kenyan Olympic team by finishing in 29:26.89, the sixth-fastest time ever. Margaret Kipkemboi, who finished just behind Rengeruk in 29:27.59, now holds the seventh-fastest time and has a strong chance of being named to the Kenyan Olympic team as a discretionary pick.
Chebet had not initially aimed for a world record but sought to make her first Olympic team in what was only her second track 10,000m race. The pace was set for a world record by Tsegay, who had requested the Wavelights to be set at 29:01.03. “When Gudaf asked for a world record, then for me I decided to say, let me try to go with that,” Chebet said.
From the start at 10:50 a.m. Pacific Time, Chebet stayed close to Tsegay. By 3800 meters, all three official pacers had stepped off, leaving Tsegay to lead a group of four, including Chebet, Rengeruk, and Kipkemboi, who reached the halfway mark in 14:31.08. The pace proved too much for Rengeruk and Kipkemboi, leaving Tsegay and Chebet to continue alone. In the final mile, Tsegay began to struggle while Chebet surged ahead just before three laps to go.
“I saw the Wavelight going away from Gudaf,” Chebet said. “Then I decided to see. I feel like I’m still strong. Let me try and see.” Chebet soon outpaced the lights, and the crowd at Hayward Field roared her on as she closed with a final 400m in 63.63 seconds, securing the record.
Tsegay, who had been uncertain about attempting the world record due to foot pain earlier in the week, decided to go ahead with the attempt after feeling good during her final strides on Friday. Despite the challenge of maintaining pace without pacers in the second half, Tsegay was gracious in her post-race remarks, giving Chebet a huge hug at the finish. “Sometimes it’s like that, no problem,” Tsegay said. “Congratulations to Chebet, very fast time.”

Excellent performance there. Thanks Beatrice for flying the Kenyan flag high
The Oregon crowd is amazing just as loud as Kenyans
What a dominant display. A true champion. I am a proud Kenyan this morning.
We're Africans !!Africa is our business❤
I'm a student of Pan Africa University, One of our courses is human rights and gender, they focuss a lot on gender, where it is not our business 😢
The first time I aaw this girl run was in cross country race last year where she outkicked Letensebet Gidey to the point Gidey just lost her legs and crumbled to the ground, and I knew she was a world beater. She is amazing.
I saw that race many times. Yes, Chebet won that race.
And yes Chebet came flying through at the end...but I thought Letesenbet Gidey miscalculated her surge towards the end. She wasn't "outkicked".
Her strategy was correct because she knew that she couldn't beat Chebet in a straight fight at the end. But Gidey moved too early because she knew Chebet would outrun her if she waited too late! But she moved too early and gave herself too much to do at the end of a brutal and gruelling race. In so doing she pushed her body to the point where she just collapsed. Gidey was way ahead. But Chebet never gave up! When she made her push she came like a hurricane!
Chebet is a determined young lady!
When I see these wonderful things I swear never to leave Kenya
Yooooooo she been 2nd so long!!!! This is so good to see!!!
No! Chebet has NEVER been 2nd, She is a specialist in 5k & never run 10k ...She replaced the Great Helen Obiri in 5k but now she wants to double in the upcoming Paris Olympics... It is her 1st attempt in 10 k and there we go Kenya! She is the new kid on the block!
@@thomasduke4402 I think it was her second time to run 10k.
Just like arsenal
Congratulations Beatrice Chebet you have done us kenyans proud well done young lady keep it up Bravo
Beatrice is a reincarnation of our great Vivian Cheruiyot. Congratulations Champion.
Actually Chebet kicks like Tirunesh if you watch their videos you will notice the similarities Vivian cheruiyot used to swing side to side smiling 😃 Hellen obiri rock and roll and I think Faith kipyegon's kick is the strongest of them all.
Vivian cheruiyot never won a 10000m race against the best Ethiopians like Tirunesh Dibaba or Ayana thats why Kenya has never won a 10000m olympic gold ever because Dibaba overshadowed Vivian.. Vivian only won 10000m gold if Dibaba was not in the race
Chebet just took down the best Ethiopian currently and in a world record she is on another level just like Kipyegon
I want to sea a 5000m race with faith kipyegon and beatrice
@@joseph_munyao Both Chebet and kipyegon can close in 56 seconds lap thats the fastest last lap time ever in women distance running and only chebet, kipyegon and hassan have ever closed a last lap in 56 seconds.. So it depends who is having a good day. Initially i would say kipyegon but Faith has already peaked and reached her max whereas Chebet is still young and has time for improving and this year she has really improved so you never know
@@joseph_munyao we will see at the kenyan 5000m trials next month
Congratulations girl. Awesome. I always root for you. Finally you achieve after hard work and sacrifice. Proudly kenyan
This lady is talented.
#her ambition is what makes her great.
Am I the only person who watches track events and in the moment vows to start running then comes back to my self after a few minutes knowing I prob wount make it to a yard without collapsing 😂😂😂

Phenomenal
Thank You Chebet
Great performance❤
Congratulations Beatrice
Congratulations ..
Congrats Chebet💪🏽 Respect to Tsegay🙏🏽
Respect from Russia and Ukraine to Beatrice 👏👏❤ 28 minutes has to be the next step and achieved.
The previous meeting record by Dibaba was in 2012.
Chebet will also break the 5000m world recod very sooon
It couldn't have been a great day for Gudaf Tsegay! She trained for this...yet by the 11th lap she was visibly grimacing and exhausted! When Chebet made her move, Gudaf Tsegay had nothing! She couldn't mount a challenge. She ran on at the same pace.! You don't announce a world record challenge, have excellent pacers, run an even race and then be exhaust from so early. I wish i could hear from Tsegay herself.
Wait for paris Derby of the two great queens of long distance. . Beatrice Chebt vs. Faith Kipyegon in 5000 M. I can't wait for the rematch
Great run
Congrats
🎉🎉🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪❤❤❤❤🏟️🎉 congratulations 👏👏 chebet
I want to cry 😭😭😭😭😭😭
It can be very emotional.
Congratulations my sister
Congratulations chebet
The crowd really represented the 'loud Kenyan spectators'! Well done our very own Kenyans and the crowd for representing us the 'loud Kenyans' 😂😂😂😂😂
Welldone chebet❤❤
Wish she could have got a strong competitor, she would have crush more that world record. Congratulations, very proud of you
It wasn't even fan to watch
Ela merce
Your statement undermines the credit of our great champion. Its shame you can day that
hongera chebet
Kalenjin women are the best anyway...get yourself one and your life is wonderful❤
Flow state achieved there. You can see it on her face
Hongera dada mkenya. Uzalendo
Sawaaaa!
SHE DESERVES THAT RECORD😊.Please LIKE MY COMMENT IF YOU PROPOSE
🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tsegay should have moved out to lane three and made Chibet do some of the leading. Tsegay inadvertently served as Chibet’s pacer.
Tirunesh Dibaba and meseret Defar used to bully us Kenyans ,..now it's our time , Chebet and Faith kipyegon are doing it now. Congratulations
and we are hitting back mercilessly
@@petermaina2693exactly 💯
This is faster than Emil Zatopek's world record...
These kenyan ladies are doing commentable job buh i dont know what is happening to our boys
That was too fast😮. Well done Beatrice
Just Kenyan Girl doing Kenyan business
I love Beatrice and appreciate her performance but I am sorry to temper, Gudaf Tsegay pacing should be also acknowledged. Reverse the roles, let Beatrice pace and front run and Gudaf wait comformrltably for 5k and the WR could own to Gudaf...Beatrice knows it. That is why she bursts into tears and is thankful to Gudaf for her hard work...
Why are they commentating on the race through loudspeaker that would annoy the hell out of me if I was a runner
Wonderful performance!! 👏 I really do not like the pace lights
Why is Kenya doing its trials in the US???
👌🏾💪🏾🙌🏾💐🖤🤎
🔥🔥🔥🔥 What performance that was!! Spectacular World Record by Chebet. But shut that dam announcer the hell up. I had to watch in MUTE.
that announcer is overbearing & unnecessary
Kericho finest 🎉
May God bless you white people you really cheer Africans and all people
What's wrong with Tsegay
This commentary is very annoying and distracting
Yes.....that is how will be going to beat Haitian gangs. A world record beating!!!!!😂
