Grew up bowling on those in the mid 70's all we had were rubber balls and then the Columbia 300 plastic came out. I averaged 197, was high in the house, next closest to me was 191. All the good bowlers in the area were at 205 at other houses and would not step in to our hand oiled house. I learned to hit my mark within a 3/8" or you were dead.
Have played a few US Bases that hand oil and can say that it is the most frustrating time you can have, but one positive is that it really helps the mental game haha F bomb central! When you have a 200 on this, you certainly know you have ridden the luck train and overplayed the lanes....well done guys! How you kept it together was so good (and yes we heard the F bombs Packy ;) )
Hand oiled-Old School! I remember when I was a kid Kona Lanes in Costa Mesa, CA held a Petersen Classic tournament and manager and PBA member Dick Stoeffler was out spraying the lanes with a hand sprayer. Tough conditions on mostly pine lanes.
That's a name I haven't heard in a long time. You should try out Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley, if you're still in CA. Get off 405 at Euclid. PBA Hall-of-Famer Barry Asher runs the pro shop. Mark Baker and his kid bowl there too. I got a couple lessons from him and played against his kid in League 7 or 8 years ago
@@B_Squar3d I used to bowl leagues at Fountain Bowl but had to quit bowling due to severe back pain. Wish I could still compete! Bowled one league post-COVID before back issues. Thanks for comment!
There's a small bowling center near where I live that hand oils their lanes. The pain of watching this video has definitely brought up similar feelings of frustration 😅
That is basically what I bowled on 75% of the time in my youth. It makes a world of difference. Movements are quicker and bigger. Let's find out who the real bowlers are :). Great stuff guys
@@TheHouseBowling those lanes looked crazy! Plastic on one lane was the best. Actually pretty great scores for those conditions. And the spares were on point! Practice your spares kids.

I just started first league last Saturday! I bowled 79 as my highest. Not my proudest moment. But I went in yesterday to get some practice and I changed styles back to 1-handed (I was trying to learn 2-handed) and ended up bowling my new all time high twice. I bowled a 164 and a 171. Wish me luck I hope I can get that same number in league
It was great bowling next to you that first set. If anyone every asks if packy and kevin are the same off camera the answer is yes. Great guys hope to seed you next year. Was hoping to get to match up with y'all that second match we just couldn't pull it through our first match.
Hand oiled you say, how about oil put on by a mop and five gallon bucket. It happened in 1987 Ohio State Bowling Tournament at Rainbow Lanes in Columbus, toughest conditions I've ever been on.
KEVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lovin' the tune brah! Oh yeah......Hey Packy........LOL. How about a Keven Williams autographed Purple Hammer for you biggest (well 6' 1" 250 lbs so probably NOT your biggest left handed fan) but hey I haven't used urethane since my hay day Columbia Vector Two ( look it up) That tells you how old I am and I would love a Purple Hammer not that I'm begging by any means! LOL Seriously though more of you two together because it's PURE GOLD!!!
That Brunswick Attitude Control looks good. Maybe Packy should throw the Attitude Control to get rid of the "One Strike Packy" nickname. You DO know Packy that you will ALWAYS be known as "OneStrike" now! LOL You know like Wolowicz on Big Band with "Fruit Loops" Hahahahahaha!
Haha, hand oiled lanes will definitely separate the men from the boys so to speak. We've had to hand oil at my center when our lane machine was down...so many complaints from my league bowlers, lol. There were a few who read the lanes, adjusted & scored well, but most couldn't figure it out.
Packy, I'd love to take a lesson if you're ever around Massachusetts or Vermont. I'm a lefty that swapped to two-handed a few years back after a bad dog bite gave me damage in my thumb, so please let me know if you're ever near here and have time.
Growing up the 'hand' oiled lanes was all they had! My father managed a bowling center and he oiled them like that every day. You get used to them IF the same person is taking care of the lanes....
sorry man.... this is so NOT true !!! or the guy who did the oiling ? did it wrong.... oiling by hand is a master Oil in the middle not on the outside :) and get it straight from the end to the foulline.
at 5:59 you can see what you did wrong, you were too far over and if you knew how to hook the ball, you'd have had a higher score on the first ball, but im kinda new to blowing so id take the same approach to get to the 20-30 arrow (i dont think theres a 30 arrow but that what i see if i had to coach
Not gonna lie, that was a blast to watch....getting your a$$ whooped by the lanes and getting those crazy breaks can make a great night. OKC here. Our lane machine has gone down and we have had to spray bottle the lanes that closing night. Talk about a rough ride. I love the other Shawnee center..they are still old school layout (even have the tube TVs) and always bowl there when I am through there.
Oh Ethan... I team with him in league today and he is blitzing the pocket with the same shot he 4-9s on... And I promptly take screenshots and send them his way
The oil machine at my house has been broken all season and have been bowling on hand oil exclusively. For me the trick is to try and get the ball through the front. When all else fails I can use my storm ice and play straight up 5 when the fronts are completely gone.
I bowl for fun a few times a year and I usually bowl 150-180 with a house ball I’ve never had my own ball. I want to buy a ball and learn how to spin the ball
Lots of fun to watch. Love tournaments like this where the lanes really challenge the bowlers, especially the professionals (that's you!!!). Gives us duffers hope.
So here's what everyone ( that is a bowler) is thinking. How do you adjust your mental game to a situation (like this oiling "pattern") that just doesn't make sense. I watched you guys and the lanes were not just picky they were board to board. Knowing the scoring pace is low and experiencing that, how do you adjust your mental game so that you don't just throw your hands up?
Simple... when everyone's in the same boat, there's not much point in getting cranky about it. Without divine intervention, you won't see anybody striking at will on conditions like this.
If possible could you show your ball layout In an upcoming vid recently I’ve learned my bowling balls aren’t drilled right 😢 so I could use some perspective what a lefty 2 handers pitch’s are

Been there done that back in the late 60s and 70s. I hand moped the lanes for many years, made for interesting bowling and scores.
This is how I learned how to bowl.
This reminds me of all my frustrations at the Peterson over the years! Nice job Phyliss and Timmy. :-)
