    Do you feel like your hands get tangled up as you play fills around the kit? Like you’re not really “in command” and “in control” of what you’re playing?
    Well, this is really just a lack of precision…and if you’re dealing with this, today’s lesson is most definitely for you.
    The secret to professional drumming sound is precision - Hitting your drums in the right spot - and at the right TIME. But without these two elements, you’ll sound sloppy and amateur no matter what.
    But not to worry, because today I’m teaching you a weird paradiddle exercise that’s kind of mind-bending - but very simple at the same time - Which will tighten up your ability to play fills around the kit smoothly and in time, sounding like a true pro. YOU CAN DO THIS!
    I believe that ANYONE can learn the drums, and I believe you’re far more capable of becoming a great drummer than you think you are. Don’t sell yourself short! SUBSCRIBE for more Non Glamorous videos that get straight to the point of solving drumming frustration. Stay Non Glamorous, Everyone!

    Years ago as a guitar/bass/keyboardist, I bought an Idiot's Guide To Playing The Drums , or something like that, thinking that I was finally going to understand the drums. There were paradiddle exercises of course, and I just instinctively started moving the paradiddles around the kit that was left behind by the drummer because my place was the rehearsal room. That was a revelation to me as far as drums are concerned. This current lesson of yours shows the absolute power of the paradiddle and moving it around the drums. I appreciate your approach as the "the non-glamourous drummer.," and I've learned quite a bit from your channel as not even a glamorous drummer, but not even a drummer.

    Dear Stephen, What a crazy way to think of singles. I simply love it and will try this to improve my precision and fluidity around the kit. Even if I am just on an E-kit the precision is one key to be a better drummer! Thank you so much for this.

    That is a mind bender! I can only play that exercise at a certain tempo and no faster, for now anyway. Based on the title, I did not expect this video to be about non-paradiddles. It's good though. It gets me out of my box, where I tend to live most of the time.
    While I can play the drums reasonably well, I do struggle with some things. Hitting in the middle of the head is one of them. Transitioning in and out of fills is another. When I'm playing fills I feel like I'm killing it, but when I listen to recordings of myself playing fills I sometimes hear myself falling out of time slightly, or not smoothly getting back into the groove coming out of a fill.

      @hoaacres7084 Місяць тому +1

      Don't worry about fills yet. I mean have fun if you want but if that is happening you aren't there yet. You will learn faster without them. Most fills suck anyhow.

    One thing I struggle with is when I’m focusing on a fill I’ll sometimes forget about playing the bass drum.

      @giantsdrumroom Місяць тому

      same here, but I think the key is to make the bassdrum just a part of your "rudiments" it will come with practice, I hope...

      Try sneaking a double or a single kick in between your feet. You can practice this completely on the Toms if you want. Then add a beat after you figure it out at the start to connect them together.

    **Stephen, Man, You Rock. My name is Ward and I consider myself a mid to higher level intermediate Drummer with a large Drum Set (at 62 a huge fan of- well, of course-Neil.) I have one of your awesome Coordination work sheets (what I call it) and being a little slower in the reading dept. and not a whole lot of patience (all my life, but not out of control) But, it's just a lot of reading (which is needed) for me to sit long enough to go thru it all**!! Keep up the great work. I know I won't stop watching (to match you, LOL ha ha.) Thanx again Stephen for you great (AND FREE) content, Ward L. P.S. what do you think of all my "in parentheses"?

    this is great, will work on it.
    But my biggest challrnge is getting my timing really accuerate (esp against a click, i usually end up playing ahead) and the beats really even (like what you were saying about why Jeff POcaro was o good)

    You can place your script around the camera. You can also place a face there so you don't have to keep talking to yourself (you do that when you look down to your left, which is fine if it's done every 10 seconds or so, but not after each phrase)

    • @RHCPsTv
      @RHCPsTv Місяць тому

      He's not looking at the script. The font size is way too small for any person to see at such a quick glance and his angle doesn't allow him to see anything on the laptop.
      It's just his way to keep his thoughts flowing and counteract nervousness in front of the camera - nobody is watching him in that very moment, but the camera being on could make some people more nervous than when doing the exact same thing without being recorded.
      Edit: Also, let's be honest...he's doing a great job at teaching lots of people how to play drums. He's doing it patiently and goes through a lot of details that 99% of youtubers leave out. Considering this, do you really care that much about him peaking at the script? :)

    • @marlosison3425
      @marlosison3425 Місяць тому

      @@RHCPsTv Which is my point exactly. The comments I gave are ways to improve, instead of him losing views because of stuff he doesn't know yet. Also, he doesn't glance, he takes at least 2 seconds when he's looking to his left. If that's not a script, that's probably an outline he's looking at. Also the constant looking down to the left (not the turning of the head to look at his laptop) is a sign of self talk. People do this unconsciously, yet it doesn't look good on camera.

    I started learning drums for 1 year and almost 2 months. What is my difficulties by now?
    Moving around the kit, with 16th notes, very fine when slow, okay when not above 130 BPM, not stable when up to 150 BPM, and very sloppy or even unable to play for higher speed.
    I have been practicing paradiddles for recent half year and I can feel the improvements. Some bars within a song used to be too challenging for me are now possible to play, even not very well, however the problems that I am encountering seemed no progress.
