  • No matter what we endure in this fallen world, Christians can take comfort and courage in knowing that God is working all things together for the good of His people. In this seminar, Drs. Burk Parsons and Derek Thomas discuss the relationship between the sovereignty of God, human suffering, and the assurance of salvation.
This seminar is from Upholding Christian Ethics, our 2022 National Conference: • Upholding Christian Et...

That ending is epic ! I laughed an I cried, both while listening to this ❤. And I found a big pice of assurance that God is working in my life. God bless these men. The true Gospel is so hard to find these days.

Our suffering is also always about more than ourselves. There are certain gifts from the Lord that can only be received through suffering. He is so faithful and trustworthy ❤️.

@@Bugsy0333 suffering helps produce sanctification. Our sanctification has an impact on those around us. Look at what's Jesus' suffering on the cross accomplished for us...there are tons of examples of where the suffering of one individual influenced the lives of others in powerful ways (Joseph, Job, Paul...).

Recently God has taught me a new reason as to why he permits suffering in our lives. As people who understand sovereignty and perseverance in faith, I have found that I dont ask enough for deliverance! Because I know that God is good and He is for us at all times, I just tend to silently leave it all in His hands and just wait. Not that it is something bad, but there is a balance.
Psalm 50:15 “And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.”
Sometimes there is suffering and that suffering is persistent because we do not ask God enough to deliver us! This is more to the discipleship side of suffering, so that we learn to abide in Him and ask Him everything and then glorify Him for His mercy. Probably this is due to our nature to be forgetful or not grateful enough unless we go though this process frequently.
Hope this is useful to someone! God bless brothers.

The last question, I would add, listen, pray, show you care. I know I was truly supported, sustained by my church as a single woman, wirh family, my mother, out of town, going through almost a year of cancer treatment, with emails, txts, cards, flowers, gifts, meals, groceries, rides, calls. I felt very cared for!! Amazing Grace! BTW, bought Derek Thomas's lecture series on Job, very good!! Helped keep perspective in the midst of suffering.

God test us in our lives why we suffer for him

The simple answer to why we suffer is because we were sold into imperfection and sinfulness and as a result we must endure all the results of imperfection. The 1,000 year rule of Christ's Kingdom will reverse the damage sin has done but now is simply not God's time to fix everything.

A different perspective and interpretation here is possible: ‘
Doing something “for GOD’s Glory” is our own act of glorifying GOD BECAUSE HE is SOVEREIGN and ultimately in charge, always working for our Good in ways that are unimaginable to each individual, but seen in the ways He works all things for our good. If we don’t trust and obey Him, He humbles us in our circumstances to enable us to listen, see, and know Him better. This is another way of coming to rejoice that we are “called” His Children, called and helped to grow up in His Image and be like Him, then finally to inherit an Eternity of wonders and peace and joy WITH HIM FOREVER-

I was hoping they would go to Rom. 8:17. Suffering is a gift or benefit of our redemption. I thought Dr. Thomas would have gone on to Rom 8:29 when he quoted 8:28. Suffering is necessary to conform us to the image of Christ. We must be humiliated, hollowed out, refined before we may be exalted/glorified.

If suffering is such a gift, why do perfect people NOT suffer? Don't they deserve any "gifts"? In perfection there won't be any suffering since that is not what God intended for humans. Before Adam and Eve sinned they enjoyed perfect health without any suffering.
Read verses in Isaiah chapters 11, 35, and 65 that speaks of earthly life during the 1,000 years. Look at this Scripture:
(Revelation 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and DEATH WILL BE NO MORE, NEITHER WILL MOURNING NOR OUTCRY NOR PAIN BE ANYMORE. The former things have passed away.”

@@billyduncan1567 My point I thought was obvious, during the 1,000 years there won't be suffering or reasons to fear anything, not even animals,
everything will be peaceful and safe, just read those Scriptures, they describe what life on earth will be like.
Yes, Jesus is perfect and he suffered but that was necessary to pay the price of redemption so humans could have the opportunity to reach perfection that Adam lost and attain everlasting life.
Christendom says everybody goes to Heaven but that is NOT true.
(Psalm 37:29) The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it.

@@truthbetold8610 My point was that we must suffer in this life, not the eschaton. We are to count it as joy (James 1:6-7) that we are "gifted" with the opportunity to participate in the suffering of Christ, so that we might be able to proceed into the exalted resurrection life (I'm not Premillennial). I refer you to 1 Pet. 4:12, II Cor. 4:7-11 and Phil 3:1 for this doctrine of union with Christ in his humiliation.

@@billyduncan1567 The thing is, those being spoken to are anointed Christians who are "called and chosen" by god to be "kings and priests" in Christ's 1,000 year Kingdom. They have to suffer as Christ suffered but THERE ARE ONLY 144,000 THAT THOSE SCRIPTURES APPLY TO. I know what Christendom teaches and it is wrong, all professed Christians do NOT go to Heaven, the Kingdom is a Government that only requires a small number compared to those it rules over.
