Great job, Kurt & Crew! We need more of these historical exposes because Game Preservation... Even just documenting how games came to be... Isn't high on a lot of people's "to do" list. We just assume things always "were" and never "what could have been?" like this video does. BTW, I was alive in 1991 (I'm old!), but was a PC user like the majority of people due to being in high school and college. So, I saw the games industry grow from the Windows/DOS side versus the Mac side. It's amazing how far we've come in just 30, 40 years where Video Games are the biggest form of entertainment on the entire planet. This is why videos like this are important for younger generations; We need to know where we came from to know where we're going, good and bad.
Hey! I really appreciate this, as I also deeply agree. Game preservation as a whole is a topic I'd love to tackle for a video all its own one of these days, as it's a wildly difficult medium to properly preserve, and there's really only a few organizations in the US tackling it. Anyway, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Your time and attention means a lot to us.
I met and swapped my texture materials products and met with the Bungie crew selling from their wee rickety card table at Boston Macworld 1990… they were firmly in the Apple dev cycle then. Big fan of Myth and Marathon, even Pathways as early proof of net game concept. They were one of the few Mac game products to get any kind of support from Apple, who saw Games as anti-Biz where they saw their money future: one of many fortunes Apple lost. I’ll ignore Alex walking away with my multi-player squad + space-combat and white-paper from VR + VC conferences, because I love what they made. What if…. Nice premise for this vidoc.
I remember at the time I heard the news of Bungie and Halo going to Microsoft and Xbox I was one of those obnoxious militant anti-Microsoft Linux fans but it was still worth it for the tasty salt of Mac fanboy tears! 😂
I grew up in a PC/DOS household, and was convinced as a kid that Mac was bad because it didn't have games... so that's my narrow thinking at the time I was growing up.
This is great, learned some new stuff, reexplored old stuff, saw how crazy the ride was and it didnt demand an hour of time to indulge my curiosity Thanks for the time and efforts you put in here Excited for what will be the next project 'monkey-nuts'
Halo and Aeropress - I have a feeling Kurt and I would get along extremely well :D Super interesting video though! Especially loved the snippets of dancing chief.
Robert, I think we'd get a long too. And you can thank our masterful video editor Chris Morris for that. It killed me the first time I saw it in the edit.
@@KurtIndovina You'll have to pass on my thanks and awe to Chris! Absolutely lost it when I saw those. You guys should consider uploading them to halo subreddits or blogs, they'd surely be instant hits. Also great video on your part, Kurt! Love your style of reporting - this has to be one of my favourite series on GameSpot :)
Robert Nicolae thank you, Robert! I will absolutely let Chris know. And I sometimes get weird sharing stuff on Reddit cuz it seems to shame self-promotion. But maybe I’ll try to humbly present it on there. Thanks for the tip.
I think it would have set first person shooters back quite a bit not just on consoles but overall. Not only that but online gaming for the next generation of consoles probably wouldn't have been as good as Microsoft really based that infrastructure from how well the original Xbox did with Halo 2 online as that was really the big seller of the service back then. If anything Halo probably would have just been an RTS series of games on the iPhone by now and that is it.
Would go grocery shopping every week with my mom, and completely abandon her to the magazine rack for an hour straight flipping through them... damn, weird thought honestly.
@@KurtIndovina Every Saturday I would do the exact same thing when we went shopping at the mall! Back then, that was my "Lemme check the Gamespot news real quick." (And calling the Nintendo hotline for tips was my Gamefaqs, I guess? haha). Good times :)
Thank you for this, Dave! It truly means a lot, as we love it to, and want to keep making. Looking forward to sharing more episodes with you in the future!
Nobody remembers that, it was not and is not a widely known fact that master chief was designed by apple and bought by microsoft before the xbox existed, you would have to some sort of video game historian to know that as common knowledge it took place in 1999 if my memory is not wrong, bungie has always been ripping off other peoples/companies ideas
If you want to see what Bungee did before Halo (and where a bunch of Halo things came from, including some enemies) watch on UA-cam "Marathon: Children of doom chapter 4", by Errant Signal

I disagree. I think if you pulled out an original Xbox and played halo, it is still very playable and comparable to modern shooters. The same cannot be said about goldeneye on the N64

1:22 Why did you time travel back to 1991 and hold a baby?
Take your conspiracy theories elsewhere, bc. This is certainly not proof that I may or may not have traveled back in time.
PC games were made for DOS, not Windows back in 1991 and generally throughout the years before Windows 95 finally changed that.
