    I had my tank hauled by these many times. It's funny, these trucks are huge and there was always a tiny Army reserve girl and crew driving. Our tank were 70 tons and the trailer had 52 wheels each with hydraulic steering on every axle. Probably 120 tons all together. They would pull like a demon and if you were going up hill I swear it would jump off the ground when it shifted from all of the torque (they are automatic). Also has a 4 person back seat with flip down bunks for 2 people. Awesome truck.

      The trailer has 40 wheels on the ground, typically 2 spares and then 8 wheels for the truck on the ground plus 1 spare for that. The tractor trailer combo weighs 45 tons empty.

      We had HETT's hauling our tanks through the box at NTC. Every single one stuck in the deep sand. We eventually had a convoy of tanks pulling HETT's instead which looked badass. 1997, Sheridans with 1/11 ACR.

      Detroits (8V-92) are no longer used in the HET's any more,it has been over a decade since they stopped using 92 Series in Oshkosh trucks.The M1070A1,which was introduced in 2009 has Caterpillars (C-18),and still do,they make 700 HP/3,300 TQ.The M1070,ever since 1985,with the 2 Stroke Detroit made 500 HP/1,470 TQ.The other 15 Ton Trucks from Oshkosh don't use Detroit Diesel at all either since 2009,they on the other hand use the C-15 ACERT.

    That's very common for crude oil haulers, because they pick up the oil at tank batteries at leases that are far from the highway, usually they're pulled out by a bulldozer.

  • @richardnielson3761
    @richardnielson3761 6 років тому +4

    Drove these from Kuwait to Iraq. Best recovery rig out there I loved my M1070. Yes it had the Detroit diesel Single turbo configuration we modified ours with the PLS Dedc computer used on recovery to get them to do 60 mph instead of the governed 47 mph. With an abrams tank up armored on the trailer. Still pulled like no tomorrow.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 4 роки тому

      The M1070 HET did not have a 8V-92TA,they used the 8V-92TT (Twin Turbocharged) variantion of the 92 Series with 500 HP/1,470 TQ.The 8V-92TA was used on all other Oshkosh trucks like the HEMTT,PLS,LVS,LVSR,and MKR-16.
      A M1074-M1120 can do well over 60 MPH,but I never have seen any M1070,or even M1070A1,do above 55 MPH at the best.

    I guess the driver had to try, but that tanker had no business on a dirt road that muddy to start with. The Oshkosh did a great job of unsticking it, without having to winch it. If loaded, the tanker was some serious weight to get out without winching, in that mud.

      You can't exactly do that,the Fifth Wheel on a M1070 is at a different height by a huge difference,it's not at all like attaching a trailer to a Peterbilt or Freightliner.They pull 40 Wheel M1000's in the Army all day long with M109 Paladins or M1 Abrams.The only other trailer you can actually fit on a HET is a Lowboy,any other regular trailer will not go to the back of one.

      The height of the Fifth Wheel on a M1070 is different by a huge margin,you can't even haul a normal dry van trailer with a HET.You can only fit a Lowboy on one of those trucks,they pull M1000's with 40 Wheels on them all day in the Army while the truck has a 231,400 lbs GVWR.But I highly doubt it would pull the tanker if you tried.

    Why didnt they hitch trailer to the Oshkosh? It could load axles of the Oshkosh.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 4 роки тому

      Because you can't fit any trailer to a M1070 HET when the Fifth Wheel is at a different height that it is too high for any civilian trailer that is used on a regular basis.In the Army,these pull M1000 Trailers that have 40 Wheels on them (Not including the spares).The only appropriate trailer you can fit to a truck like this is a Lowboy,used only for Wide or Oversized Loads.
