- Rush Rumors - Who Will Drum? Jay Weinberg, Mike Mangini, Mike Portnoy, who could possibly fill in for the late great Neil Peart and who has the best SEO?
Blake and Matt discuss in Episode 76 of Your Music Is Bad ...And You Should Feel Bad
Nic Collins would be very capable of playing dynamic progressive parts in large drum kit. He's very good at playing very faithful to original.
Lots of great drummers out there who could do it.
Rush is a compositional band, especially Neil's parts. There would be no room for playing whatever you want, as all the air drummers would be lost. Nobody with their "own style" would fly.
Given that Danny Carey played with Alex and Geddy during the Taylor Hawkins memorial concert, he seems to be a likely pick for the gig, if it comes up. There’s also the fact that Alex just played a song on stage with Tool last week…
I can’t believe I didn’t think of him. Very good point!
I don't feel Carey can play Rush songs with precision
I think the list of dudes that A) could pull it off, and B) that the fans would accept is very short.
Carey seems a logical choice.
MIke Portnoy would honestly be the winner
@@timsears951 Portnoy's an asshole who can't get along with anyone.
I think you need to find someone who was like Neil, pensive, reserved, precise, and probably not someone many people know.
It has to be Danny Carey. Since he plays a hybrid set, he can easily adjust to Rush songs. Plus, he took over for Neil as the greatest living drummer.
Nobody should. Neil is gone and R40 was the best possible way to close up the shop.
I don't want celebrity fanboy drummers who never had any interest in RUSH beyond 2112. I think it is wrong to play as 'RUSH", it's over. They need to form a new band like "Lee Lifeson" or something like that, with PROFESSIONAL drummers, unknowns, for tours and albums. They could tour as "RASH", as a goof, that is not a bad idea.
Mike Portnoy would be the perfect one in my humble opinion.
Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree would be an awesome fit, he is an excellent drummer.
"I was lucky enough to meet him a few times and he was always super nice to me. I spent some time hanging out with him at his 'man cave' where he kept his vintage car collection and we discussed drumming at great length whilst admiring the cars." -GH
I think ....Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree/King Crimsom......
Marco M from the Aristocrats is phenomenal
"Getty" 🤣😂
Danny Carey is the modern Neil Peart and is both a massive Rush fan and has played with them at tribute concerts.
He's also on tour with Tool right now and likely unavailable lol
My suggestions would be Simon Phillips or Carl Palmer. And that they start over with new material. I saw Alex Van Halen suggested - I’m open to it. Maybe Matt Sorum.
Mike Mangini.
ANYONE but Mike Portnoy. Neil Peart was the most unassuming and humble guy…real class. Portnoy is a shameless self promoter and a bit of a narcissist. Horrendous fit for Rush.
Simon Phillips or Nico from Maiden. Don't laugh but Phil Collins son with a little practice is the perfect fit. Yes, Phil's son.... dude is amazing and would not imitate but play as required to be 100 on point.
I was thinking the same, Nic Collins would play the parts perfectly.
how about this: maybe not anyone ..maybe they may do it accoustically doubt that though
Omar Hakim
Brann Dailor from Mastodon would do well.
I always thought Nick Menza was capable of doing anything. However, not possible.
Danny Carey, mmmmmm….would age be a factor? He’d be 65 or 66. Hard to say. Bet Chad Smith would geek out
What if Danny Carey did some shows? What do you guys think about him?
He’s good. Would probably do a great job.
Danny Carey, Tim Alexander, or Jay Lane.
I kinda hope they let Rush rest and write some new music as Lee and Lifeson
Sayin’…. Definitely won’t be Grohl… probably not Portnoy absolutely not Mangini or Minneman ….
I think Gavin Harrison could be a solid pick .
Truthfully I’m not sure there is anyone adequate enough to be Neil for 3 hours a night
SHUSH. IT'S ONLY HERB FROM PRIMUS.
Nobody 🙏 RIP Neil 🥁
Danny Carey is the best fit in my opinion
It seems like such a 'natural fit' in my opinion also that it's easy to imagine that even Getty and Alex have already considered the possibilities...
Virtual holographic zombie Neil Peart should play drums.
Mike Mangini would be the best choice
Alex van halen. Jason bonham
I hope they don’t put together another incarnation of Rush, and I doubt they will. I like these one offs, though.
I wonder what Cory would think if jay got the gig?😂
🤣
Nick D'Virgilio would be the best choice! 🤞
yeah, anyone who can play Genesis very well, either Nick D'Virgillio or Nic Collins
I would love to see Louis Cole play with Getty and Alex!!!!!!!!!
Danny Carey will play the drums for Rush
Lee Van Lifeson; Geddy, Alex Van Halen and Alex. Totally different project.
Or by age, maturity and level of drumming and ability; Rod Morgenstein.
It should be Mike Portnoy, he knows his place and it's about Rush !!!
He knows all the songs perfect, the Drum kit set up and is good friends with Rush and was a great friend of Neil's !!! 👍🎶🥁🎼
Have you guys not seen Mangini play live with Dream Theater? I love Neil but, Mangini plays circles around him. He would probably be bored playing Rush songs.
Ironic since I was bored the last time I saw him play Dream Theater songs
Yeah, as @andydixon8016 said, Danny Carey makes a lot of sense because he's already done it, he has the ability and Alex playing with Tool thing...Marco Minneman has done some music with Alex. I think those two would be at or near the top of the list. And Alex Van Halen is actually a very good drummer but Jason Bonham should definitely be up to the challenge.
Marco has his own cool thing going.
Well, so does Danny Carey and pretty much any other drummer that would be seriously considered. This isn't joining Rush as a permanent member thing. It would be for a few shows to maybe a small tour. @@AndrewGrey22
Ringo Star was actually pretty amazing.
Listen to him a bit more.
Please NOT Mangini... he plays like a midi track.
...you miss the soulful feel of Niel Peart?
(YES, THIS IS SARCASM)
I mean, it’s your opinion, but I can’t disagree more
I’m 100% with you on this one
i love Rush everything up to signals, please don`t hate me but Geddy cannot sing the old stuff anymore, i suggest he gets a young buck that can sing all Caress of Steel, 2112, Hemipheres,
Yeah even in the 90s he was making compromises to sing 2112
Get a drummer and singer. Ged's voice has been shot for a while now.
Alternatively, write new music. Ged had this thing where he was trying to “yodel” himself up to pitch at the beginning of notes and that got hard to listen to. Whatever, I’d suggest he get with a voice coach, establish what his working range is, and write for it.
I love RUSH! RETIRE!!!
Mangini......
Stuart Copeland
My pick would be Matt Cameron or Jimmy Chamberlin
They should get Alex Van Halen and make some music that swings.
It's the least they could do since their manager destroyed Van Hagar in 1994 through 1996.
I haven’t heard this one. What did their manager do to Van Hagar?
@theonetruematt Rush's manager's sister was married to AVH....so he and Eddie thought he would be a good manager for VH.
He filled Eddie's head with being the leader of the band....business decision wise....
When Roth was in the band, he was the leader, with AL.
When Sammy was in the band, he was the leader with AL.
Eddie was all about the music. So when his head was filled with "This Is Your Band, You Should Be In Charge" it all went downhill and was never the same.
@bobc.5698 this is interesting and I definitely want to learn more, is this in any of their autobiographies? I know Sammy has one I heard is pretty good
@theonetruematt Sammy's biography is pretty true.
I knew something was wrong at the time because the 1995 VH tour wasn't like previous tours. It had a sterile coldness to it.
@bobc.5698 I will check it out thanks for the tip!
Portnoy is the best choice
I'm tired of Portnoy and Grohl.
There’s no way Grohl could do it. Just saw him jamming on Charlie Bennante’s kit and he was very humble in his playing.
These guys' Neil Peart idolization and ball-gargling is embarrassing, and speaks volumes about their musical illiteracy.
Peart was great in Rush, but he was a fish out of water on the rest of planet Earth.
Remember that time he tried to play jazz?
CRINGE.
The music understander has logged on
@theonetruematt Feel free to run things by me when you're unsure how music actually gets made. I image that's hovering around the 100%-of-the-time mark.
Mangini, a midi track? Dude, you sound like a CNN host. You just go with popular misinformation. Mangini is the best drummer in the history of music. He can handle anything that Peart played. Just saw him a couple of months ago. No problem. As for the hosts, the only drummers that can handle a Rush set would be one of these veteran players. These younger guys would be a joke.
Nonsense. Matt Garstka destroys Peart and all the rest.. PERIOD.. Take a look at 'Thoughts and Prayers'
Mangini is an incredible drummer, but it’s more than just incredible drumming to fill a role like the drummer of an established band like Rush. I definitely don’t agree that he sounds like Midi, because when his drums are engineered correctly(or when he’s playing in a live setting), he has incredible tone and dynamics to his playing that isn’t necessarily heard on many of the studio albums he did with Dream Theater. There’s a feel to the music, and Mangini absolutely had feel, but it differs from what Rush’s sound requires. In the same way a jazz guitarist and a metal guitarist can be equally talented, but are tailored for different styles, thus each one would likely be selected for certain gigs. One of the most important elements is sole who not only can play the music, but who can play it while also reflecting the original sound and intent as accurately as possible.
For example, one of my favorite drummers, Virgil Donati, is an incredible drummer, up there with Mangini in terms of being one of the best. However, I don’t think his sound would fit with a band like Rush either. The thing that separates Mangini in Dream Theater and Mangini in a project like this post-Rush project by Geddy and Alex is that Dream Theater was (and still is) making new music, so there was room for a major change in the sound like that. I personally don’t think that’s the case for this Geddy and Alex project.
If I were to think of some drummers that could come closest to replicating the sound of Rush in a live setting, I would have to say that Gavin Harrison and Marco Minneman would be my two top picks. Incredible technique with a similar dynamic control and sound to Neil.
@@MetalheadNation by the way, I meant to refer to this darthmorbous. And, I agree to some extent with your response.
Don’t think I ever said anything about a midi track I said they played to a CLICK TRACK live which is extremely common these days for syncing up any extra media (visuals, samples). Look at old videos of DT the samples in Voices don’t line up but when they did their Awake anniversary stuff it synced up perfectly and I&W tour felt 100% at album tempo. If you listen to The Trooper after seeing Maiden play it live it sounds slow. Is any of this making sense cause you completely misunderstood the original discussion.
Garstka is very good I saw him do a clinic. Would actually love to see him in a more musically balanced band than Animals As Leaders
