I know normally we do time stamps and I will tomorrow but please listen to This podcast from Beginning to end! It really is an important conversation hope y’all enjoy ! @dvdnguyen
Incredible and inspirational story. Thank you David for bringing to light his and similar stories. So important for people to hear of real people going through real troubles and making it on their own through hard work and perseverance.
No cap. This episode just knock the wind out of me. Really love how you just let David speak and you only pushed on him with questions so that he’s go deeper with it. This is why genius brain is a must listen. Much love to David for coming to the podcast and just being a real human. Best episode by far.
One of the best episodes. I never comment, but his story and his demeanor held my attention. Additionally, I appreciate that David let him speak and didn’t interrupt.
Same feeling man, but the title confused me since i listen to the podcast while driving. And I didn’t caught up that David was talking with another David due to the loudness of cars and. Reading the title with David losing his sister i got a little confused. Wait David had a sister? And only near the end i started to understand that David is a common name and it so happen to be that David Nguyen was there. Love the podcasts. One of my favourite activities during car rides. Hope you won’t leave us too soon mister So. Otherwise i’d have to hunt you down
This episode was deep and very relatable in some parts. Our lives are all different but the feeling of lost is there. We will get lost a couple of times but the passion and your purpose in life is always there. And it's amazing how this whole episode came together. Depression doesn't go away. But it's not all bad. It lingers and stay but life is more than your depression. You are more than your depression. Trust and believe for every turns that your life takes you. You will end up where you suppose to. Take care of yourself and trust. Thank you for both Davids, David So and David Nguyen.
Thank you to @dvdnguyen for sharing your parents' story on their journey to escape Vietnam. The story made me realize that I never truly knew my dad's story of how he escaped Vietnam and ended up in Hong Kong. I brought up your story today to my dad and it prompted him to share with me his own experience and trauma of being out at sea. Thank you so much for sharing because I was able to learn of his experience. Also thank you David So for always bringing on such a great person on as your guest!
Wow I’ve vaguely heard of David’s pursuits before, but this podcast.. absolute respect. Always listened to my family sharing their stories of leaving Vietnam, couldn’t imagine having been apart of their journey and how much it could’ve altered my life.
Haven't seen this Podcast in a min....but the title got me...and I am 11 min in and about to start sobbing..... especially after having lived in SEA and knowing so many refugees from Vietnam and Myanmar it just hits hard. Immigrant families are sooooo resilient
Wow...Just finished the episode and I'm still processing it all. Late in the episode you talk about being inspired by the passion of others and it reminds me of the skateboarder Nora Vasconcellos who said she judges how good a skater is by how much they inspire her to skate. That approach has been a heavy influence on me and has steered me towards my own passions. That being said, thank you David(s) for your passion and for the inspiration you give me.
I really enjoy this episode so much. I graduated from college a year ago. I haven't gotten a job since I graduated. Rejection after rejection. Just feels like the world wants me to give up. I don't want to stay at a regular job. I do want to do what I love. I really loved hearing his story and it just gave me some extra strength to keep working hard and not give up. Thank you so much. Love your podcast and love hearing about people's life stories. ❤️ ❤️❤️
This is a fantastic interview. I like hearing of different people’s life stories, especially, how they got here. How David got “here” had many twists and turns! Thanks for sharing yours and your families journey.
The Bear 🎉yesss!! So glad you brought this up in the episode David! Love this episode :) and hearing David’s origin story plus his chef background was so cool to hear too! Can’t wait to finish watching this!
Managed to listen to the podcast last night when it came out in Aus on the Sunday and this was such a great conversation piece! More guests on the podcasts would be awesome.
Loved this episode, I’m an upcoming chef finishing up culinary school and contemplating if I’m good enough for a high caliber Restaurant. Hearing his experiences is reassuring that hard work and self value and the hunger will get me into where I want to be. But also keeping my mental health in check because this profession is very emotionally taxing.
Really related and connected to this-especially immigrating from Vietnam to the US with my family and having to adapt and learn the “American” way. Thank you for sharing!
I really enjoyed this podcast !! Great guest, I recently got back to cooking again after so long and it feels so nice and definitely makes you appreciate all the work that goes into it
What a great guess! Coming from a similar back story and hardship. Where my parents escaping Vietnam and mom 8/9mo pregnant on the boat. The stories were crazy. Born a week later at camp
David you don’t understand how much I needed this podcast in my life right now. It really felt like the words I needed to hear that was always empty because I don’t have direction in my life. This is my turning point. 🫶🏼
Oof - this hits home! My parents were refugees from Vietnam as well and I’m from the Bay Area, have family in OC, used to go to Reno for Vietnamese concerts, so I can 100% visualize the whole thing as he was storytelling.
This story was absolutely amazing, what a great guest to have on the pod. Listened on Spotify but I HAD to come to the youtube comments to say something! I’m a new fan of David Nguyen!
Yo this episode got me glued to the screen, the conversation was so damn good and the stories David Nguyen talked about were so crazy and kept me hooked, hopefully he can come back and do another episode sometime in the future!
I don’t even know what to write. This is intense. Normally i listen to podcast whiles doing something but I’m literally glued to the screen screaming whauuut, omg and dammn… like fr very inspirational guy already and I’m not even half way through the video yet
wow this episode was really good. the part that really resonated with me was the "perspective" part. its so important to have perspective and look back on your come up too. everyone's story is different and same goes for their struggles. it really humbles a person. sad thing is nowadays people are too quick to judge and have don't have time to listen or care. its depressing.
I’ve been really enjoying these episodes where the guests aren’t as well known. His family’s story in the beginning was crazy and his journey in the food industry is pretty inspiring. Another great one!
the refugee plight is different than your normal immigrants. it’s similar but one isn’t really involved with choice so much. i’m from a big Hmong family, growing up refugee you have to find your own answers. no one in your family knows your life is messed up because of war when you’re living a life post war. when it came to culture and language, i was the last son of my mother. by the time i was mid teen helping out at the family restaurant cooking chinese food i would get beat by my dad because i couldn’t understand where the pineapple was. my dad was so upset with me he kicked me hard in the stomach for wasting his time to leave the wok to walk to the cans and grab his own pineapple. this is because i was the youngest and had the least amount of people raising me the culture or language asian parents are different. i understand why and who these people are. but it doesn’t mean i’ll share or shed a tear for some of them when they pass. i’ll honor them to a point, but if the last interaction i remember of them was being kicked in the stomach i am paving my own way no matter how much blood we share. i’m an adult obv, so my relationship with language and culture is not tied with family as i had to raise myself outside of what my parents raised me as considering that i also had to raise myself when my mom had her stroke 20 years ago.
I think that being an American has a more significant meaning to white people than minorities because of how this country began because they were able to enjoy more freedoms throughout history where as most minorities had laws specifically preventing them from doing things like owning land or even having the same public restrooms. So yeah I can see why minorities don't have that sense of being an American.
huge fan of david nguyen’s recipes. david so, one day, i’d love to chop it up with you about life, food, and just whatever comes to mind. i had reached out to you on IG in hopes of getting you food one day, still hoping to make it happen

Truly one of the best episodes from Genius Brain.
David is now someone else's Mr Roger's
This was powerful, thanks for sharing David.

as i’m watching i got distracted about the thing above David’s head, to the left. the black thing on the door ( i tried to wipe it away at least 2 😅)
I was like David has a sister?? Lol it was the other guy. This guy had a fucken journey man. Mad props to him.

Wow the vibe is so different from Google Podcast. You really gotta see it to believe it live.
Can’t wait to watch ❤
About 800,000 Vietnamese boat people dramatically survived in 1975, about 400,000 died in the ocean.
I was born in the Philippines for the same reason.
