Change the name of a local account
To change how your name appears on the lock screen:
Select the Start button, type Control Panel, and select Control Panel from the list of results.
Select User Accounts, and then select Change account type.
Select the account you want to change, select Properties, and then enter a new name for User name.
Select OK.

The simplest video and best one to explain this procedure that didn’t take 2 mins. All other videos that I watched were confusing me.

I was also having trouble changing my account user name. Havent been able to change it since I bought my computer (2yeard ago😓) But I saw a tutorial by majorgeeks and it helped me!
Here is step by step!
Window key + r
Type: netplwiz
Click "properties"
Input the name that u want in the "Full name" section and that's it! Restart your computer and you should be able to see your new account name

It's March 2020 there are only three options: 1. Change your account type. 2. Manage another account & 3. Change User Account Control settings. Can't do it.

Check if there is change account type.. Then click it. Then inside that option again change account type. Then the local account administrator icon with current name will appear click on it. Left side you may find change the account name option.. This was my PC case

there is no button at the first one to change :/
It changed everywhere except where I was wanting it to. I want to see my name at the top of the start button. When I click on it my name DOES come up, it just dosent seem to extend to the start button menu

is this guy just ignoring all who say "acct name isn't listed"?? He gets you gon in the right direction, which is awesome..
So to all not seeing it, just click acct type choose you acct and the option will be there... just had to dig a lil bit deeper is all.
I have microsoft account name logged in and there is no option in the control panel to change my account name. my microsoft account requires me to fill in the "last name" part which I want only to display my username / first name. is there a way to do this?

But there is one major issue, every time I open a folder or text document on my PC it directly says "Users\*OldAccountNameHere*" even though I think it's supposed to be my new updated name.
