    You can save a block by using the global eq settings or going further into the amp settings and using the eq in that.

    this is a great and helpful video. im really thinking of shrinking down my entire rig to just the HX Stomp XL (or a neural Quad Cortex). Having only 4 snapshots in the XL is a dealbreaker for me (instead of 6 - as the XL as 6 footswitches)

      Hey thanks for checking it out! Yeah the HX Stomp XL is great for gigs. I'm using it as part of a hybrid rig at the moment with a real amp because I'm currently playing venues big enough to justify having a real amp again, but even as a DI rig, it's insanely good.

  • @ShadamAran
    @ShadamAran 2 роки тому +2

    i don't even need the xlr out. every venue I play at nowadays has a dedicated DI for each instrument when needed, and when we bring our own sound i just go quarter inch onto our in ear rig. I don't know what it's like other places, but in TN it's perfectly safe to assume every venue will not require an xlr out.

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  2 роки тому

      Yeah most places can handle jacks, but I just like to carry a DI box just to be on the safe side. I know I can always get an XLR cable. Some venues stage boxes might not be able to handle 1/4" in, or the venue might not have enough DI's. It's just easier for me to know I definitely have one haha

      Good question, and honestly, I've just never bothered looking into setting them up. I'm sure it's easy to do, but I like to view the HX Stomp as a pedalboard where I can switch things on and off as I need them. It's my old analog brain haha! I should probably try it though haha!

      I am afraid I don’t understand the need for a DI box at all. The main outs of the HX stomp are balanced (!) TRS. Thus, a cheap TRS to XLR adapter cable should do the job. 😀

      @@neocampus9043yeah, but as I explain in the video, it’s just easier. Adapters are unreliable, and can go missing or break. I’d trust a good DI box any day of the week. I spend most of my year on tour every year, I don’t want something like an adapter to derail my gig

    I've recently integrated the Xl into my P&W pedal board rig. I have dirt and compression before the stomp and then use the stomp as my amp/FX. One suggestion- you could develop a patch that utilizes the send/return for patching in some pedals on an "as needed" basis. I do that for bringing in some of my prized pedals and you can program the bypass to bring the loop in. Works great! This is a great pedal and the best thing is that if forces you work with what you've got on hand which can lead to better playing/musicianship. At least it did for me :).

    yet to have seen someone use this thing like I would at home... ugh
    I want one button to be a nice clean with a chorus and some ambience and then in another I want a high gain tone with a optional on/off delay.
    will that work with this?
    or If I pick a amp that has a nice clean and distorted channel, can I have it so one snapshot has a delay and reverb as my stomps while another snapshot has an overdrive and delay in stomps?
    as I can click straight from the clean snapshot with reverb and delay and no overdrive, to a high gain snapshot with overdrive enabled?

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  2 роки тому

      Yeah you can assign multiple pedals to a single footswitch, and it can also be used in Patch mode which allows you to assign entire patches to the footswitches. For example, patch 1 might be your clean, that would have it's own footswitch. Inside each patch you could technically have different amps too.

    You shouldn’t need a DI-box, because it has balanced outputs that only need an adapter cable „TRS to XLR“!

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  2 роки тому +4

      Absolutely, can be done that way.... but as I mentioned in the video, it's just easier. We are often using in house PA systems from hire companies so it's easier to just give their sound guy the option to run an XLR.
      Plus, every venue is a different layout, I'd need to carry varying lengths of cable in case the mixing desk is at the back of the room, or even in some venues, upstairs overlooking the hall.
      Having an XLR option on my board is just an easier way for the sound guy to run cables that he's guaranteed to have available. It can be done with TRS cables, but in my use case it's more about functionality. I know they will always be set up to run XLR cables on stage regardless.

    • @JordanAllenClark

    Nice, use the xl too. Very functional (gain stacking) approach. Curious for your gain stage and Amp settings as well. BTW the difference with the regular stomp is mostly in the number of switches and connections, not in the amount of dsp (nor Nr of blocks in the latest update).

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  2 роки тому

      Thanks for checking it out! Yeah I treat it like I would treat my usual pedalboard. My ears like lower gain sounds stacked over a single higher gain sound. I'm sure I could get even more functionality out of the unit if I just had a single gain block, but I like having the stacking options.
      Didn't know they'd updated the HX Stomp to be able to handle more. Last I heard it was lower DSP.

    Hey Leigh, great video. From the clips of the gig, I didn't see you use the footswitches much within songs. Do you think you could have even have gotten by with just the small HX Stomp? I'm on the fence about which one to get and seeing you use this one gave me the confidence that I can pull my gigs off with only a Stomp, I'm just not sure which one. Seeing you not use many different tones within the songs veered me slightly towards the smaller Stomp! Did you think you could have gotten by with just that one?

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  Рік тому +2

      Hey, thanks for checking it out. That's a good question. In theory I probably could have BUT I do like having the option for extra things so the XL for me works better in that sense. On some of the other footswitches I have different drive pedals linked and a boost switch for leads. I like to stack drives and swap drives in songs depending on what it feels like so just having the option to easily kick something on or off makes my life easier haha!

  • @DrJosephKim7
    @DrJosephKim7 2 роки тому +1

    Why not go with the Helix Floor to have more options? I like the size of the stomp xl but for someone like you seems like a floor would give you way more options.

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  2 роки тому +2

      Good question... it would give me way more options, but sometimes I see that as a bad thing. I don't to have too many options when I gig, I want to build a rig that focuses on a few core tones. Also space wise, sometimes we're super tight on space and the Helix Floor is pretty big. The stage in this venue was a nice big stage which is a luxury, but when we're crammed into a corner, the larger units can be tricky.
      But, it's all down to circumstances and what the player needs. Personally I prefer the smaller profile of the Stomp XL.

    I wouldn't buy this product if it didn't replace my whole rig. Simplicity is the point. Sounds to me as though it works just fine. I've only been conflicted about whether the HX Stomp XL or the Helix LT is the better product. I've also be curious as to why guys who have gone this route have tended to use a Fractal. I don't immediately see the advantage of Fractal over Line 6. Perhaps Fractal is doing a better job of promoting their products thru working musicians.

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  11 місяців тому +2

      I think Fractal were the go to choice for a which because they were the first brand to really get their foot in the door with the touring guys in the early days of modelling. Then it switched to Kemper.
      The Helix LT has more footswitches than the Stomp XL, and the expression pedal, but if you can live without those and want the smaller size, the Stomp XL is hard to beat.

      @LeighFugeGuitar  2 роки тому +4

      Yup, I know. I mentioned in the video that I prefer to run is via an XLR for ease of set up in venues. Some venues either don't have 1/4" inputs on a desk, or a 1/4" to XLR cable, and it also means I don't have to spend money on a cable that I don't really need. I have loads of XLR's and every venue also has loads, so for me, this is the best solution.

    Tone seems a little muffled to my ears.

      Yeah. Very different to all the modellers I’ve tried, which usually sound unbearably crispy. That’s really put me (and my band mates) off them. So I was quite enjoying the slightly muffled sounds! I’m sure it would be really simple to add a bit of sparkle if required.

    The DI box makes no sense.

      The DI box makes perfect sense... most venues stage boxes, and the PA system we carry, are XLR inputs. The HX Stomp XL does not have an XLR output. It only has a 1/4" jack.
      The DI box allows me to show up at any venue and just take an XLR feed from their PA, or from our own PA when we carry that. Most desks put 1/4" inputs on auxiliary channels which often separates the faders to different parts of the desk, and depending on the desk, can also affect routing for IEM feeds etc... the DI box removes the need for that, and also allows me to have a ground loop should I need it for venues with bad power.

      On that particular gig I was booked for there was not, it's a show that the agent sends out as a 3 piece without a live bassist, not sure why, but it was always the config for those gigs whenever he'd book me for one. The bass was on playback track.

    Simple. Easy to move. Gets the job done.
    Every guitarists out there will agree that there’s nothing inspiring going on there though. It’s all about practicality.
    But there’s a reason why Gilmour, Hendrix, EVH, SRV, Eric Johnson drug a TON of legit gear to the show to achieve the magic.
    Not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings.
    Just my opinion 😉

      100%
      Load in, set up and sound check in minutes. I love playing with loud amps, but sometimes the practical side wins. Especially these days with modern PA systems and monitoring setups, it’s so easy to get a good, and controlled sound, without needing a wall of 4x12s… although they are fun!

      Bruh. Did they have a helix in 1960? Lol.
      Nothing inspiring going on in a unit with 300+ amps and effects?
      Dude... Try one out lol.
