Because you’re not supposed to do that and they aren’t supposed to look partisan. When you’re a federal judge, justice, etc you can’t seem like you favor one side over the other.
@@CR-ce5lf I think that’s tradition, ceremony, unwritten type of stuff.. if you look at their votes and written opinions on cases, they are far from neutral.. Some even have partisan careers before appointment. Clarence Thomas’ wife is a right wing activist..

I very much respect the military and Justices for their rules like this. Non-partisan, just respect without giving into political ideology. Gorsuch gained a bit more respect from me for not bowing down to Trump at that moment in the video. He seems to take the impartiality seriously.

Thanks for the video. I'd never watched a SOTU address before and thought all the clapping was weird. It felt like a big old butt kissing party. I'd be ok with no clapping at all.
It was weird. There usually aren't that many obvious applause breaks written into a SOTU. In fact, many presidents have given the state of the union in a much less formal setting. Trump just loves make a big old embarrassing show out of everything.

Media Bias I find it a little ironic that the supporters of a man proven repeatedly to be one of the most dishonest politicians in history are so fixated on and critical of the honesty of the media. I'd like to think I could be a fair guy. I'd be thrilled to see evidence that mainstream media(colllectively hundreds or thousands of people) within the last couple years has made, without retraction or correction, even a fraction of the thousands of false statements Trump(one man) has been documented to have made. It's like, sure, fairness and honesty in reporting is great, but then you choose this guy to be your champion of those values???

Mike Diekow I don’t know about Justices but Military are not allowed too show interest in any political party according to the Uniformed Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Other than showing support for veterans, I'm almost positive that Justices "aren't allowed" to show support for any party since they're supposed to be impartial.

All Hale Reality- Of course it is my observation. Unlike so many who post comments these are my opinions and views 100% of the time. Very few people clap for their own statements unless that are praising someone else. Also calling the people who didn't applaud as being treasonous and un-American is pretty tacky as well.
I say lack of perspective because if you yourself was up their in trumps position the only reason you'd clap is because you are self assessed? If I was in trumps position I'd clap the same as trump but I would be clapping for America. He is clapping for the people he is talking about as well. This guy is pretty selfless, he is risking his own life to fix America. His head has targets on it I'm sure
He's not applauding himself he's applauding for the thing he just spoke about. Just like the audience isn't typically applauding Trump but whatever thing he's talking about (i.e., when they clapped after his remarks about a brave soldier). I agree it's a little weird but it's not entirely uncommon.
