I really like how you did this, giving each one a go before making the decision. Thank goodness you kept Girl With a Pearl Earring, she is soooooo good. I was nervous.
Hope you feel better soon! ☺️ I think that is a good premise to choose books to read, I am advancing in years and as the saying goes ‘so many books, so little time!’ 😅 so I too will only read books that I know I will enjoy and find interesting and very quickly DNF ones that I start but don’t fulfil that criteria! 🤪 Reading is one of the great pleasures in life and I particularly enjoyed Girl with a Pearl Earring 😊📚🤓 xx
Yes, a valuable reminder not to waste time on those that we're not into. Everyone here seems to agree about girl with a pearl earring, so I think I've made a good decision to keep that one 😊
Thank you for this video, Sarah/Sara. I hope you're feeling better on this lovely Sunday. I'm excited by The Winter Garden. I generally don't buy books based on their cover, but I'm glad you're giving that one a go. FWIW, I loved Cry, the Beloved Country, but of course I know that everyone has different tastes in books. As others have said, I too enjoyed Girl With a Pearl Earring, which combines my love of art and literature. As an aside, casting Scarlett Johansson as Griet in the film adaptation was an inspired choice. Being shallow now -- I love your beautiful sofa and the photos and artwork hung on the wall behind you. Fabulous!
Thank you for the kind compliments!! I'm glad you loved cry the beloved country. Perhaps it would be one I kept if I didn't have such a huge tbr, I'm just trying to get the ones I'm really excited about 😊
@@YourTrueShelf Dearest Sarah/Sara, I have a confession to make. I left a really rude comment on one of the videos you filmed when you had a head cold. I deeply regret it. I tried to find the post to delete it but I couldn't find it. I'm sorry I did this and I hope I didn't hurt your feelings. I remain your loyal subscriber. --Julie
I was entirely underwhelmed by The Thirteenth Tale so wise decision there and really enjoyed The Girl with a Pearl Earring. I also really enjoyed The English Patient but it took me about thirty pages to get into, I’m sure if you got rid of it though and then wanted to read it, your library would have it. I think this is a really good way of cutting down the TBR, there aren’t many books I start off disliking and end up liking, it’s just going to take me much longer than you! 😉
Haha you need to set aside several days 😂 I'm glad your opinions are similar, as we have such crossover in what we feel about the books that we both read x
I had a diane setterfield book and unhauled it unread from my shelves as I won it in a giveaway and in the end didn't think it was going to be one for me. So I understand on your choice to unhaul that one. I have read long walk to freedom and I really liked it because it gave me a lot of insight into his life and apartheid history as well. I will agree though, it is a telling rather than immersive storytelling method. It would probably work better on audiobook for a lot of people. Leave the world behind is one I have no interest in either. I liked how to stop time but it is a light hearted easy read. It was good for the summer holiday I took it with me on, but doesn't seem like something that is essential reading in my opinion.
Thanks for such a lovely comment 💛 I felt so bad about Nelson Mandela!! It's a good idea to try the audio though, thank you. Seems like we have similar unhaul taste!
Sorry you're sick Sarah. The 13th Tale has never been for me. Glad you're keeping The Winter Garden. Longborn has never interested me either. This was a great way to do an unhaul.
I fundamentally disagree with unhauling, especially books I've given five stars. Haven't read any of the others though. Longbourne I imagine gets a rough time because setting your book inside one of the most perfect and beloved novels ever written is a tough job.
Good decision on Leave the World Behind. Not one of my favorites. I, too, love that passage from Ondaatje, but I couldn't stand The English Patient. It was torturous. Also a good decision. I'm of the same mindset as you, too. My TBR is ridiculous and I just want to read books that I love, that are at least 4 stars. I'm DNFing with abandon. Maybe it's a growing sense of mortality or something in my middle age, but I feel like I don't have the time or patience for mediocrity anymore.
Sorry you're poorly. Hope you don't feel too grim. I couldn't get into How To Stop Time either and have previously unhauled this. Re The English Patient - can you please unhaul this to me?! 😀 Your edition looks nicer than the one I have, and it's one of my favourite films of all time! xx
Oh yes of course!! Goes without saying you can have anything I'm unhauling 😊 Don't feel too bad thanks, yesterday was the worst day, but still pretty OK xx

Hahaha I remember how hot you said that book was 😂😂 even though you read it ages ago!

😂 I still apologise 😂 yep totally agree re Longbourn, a brave move!!

@YourTrueShelf Thank you ❤️ Hope you're feeling even better today xx
I read how to stop time and didnt enjoy it, although i did like midnight library.
Loved the midnight library, also helped by listening to it being read by Carey Mulligan, who has a gorgeous voice!
Good decision re Leave the World Behind. Those are hours of my life I will never get back 😂
Haha oh good, glad I've swerved that one!!
