  • We sailed around Cabo San Lucas and into the Sea of Cortez. There were some challenging upwind miles before reaching the cruising grounds around the lovely town of La Paz. For several weeks, we sailed the beautiful desert islands of Isla Espiritu Santo and Isla Partida. This part of the Gulf of California has rugged landscapes, ancient cactus groves, and rich wildlife.
    Julia is an Atkin Designed Ingrid Ketch, built in 1960 in Desolation Sound. She is traditionally built of fir and cedar planking on a fir backbone and oak frames.

    And still no drama... it's so refreshing to watch a sailing channal not complaining about the weather, shipping, motorboats and on top of that you seem to be sailing most of the time and not motoring arond. Thanks for BEEING A SAILING CHANNEL. Best regards from Jarle

    Thank you than you thank you for taking us along on your journey. The tempo with which you share the tale, the balance between narration, and just showing is with the camera, for me is up there with the best traditions of documentary film making. Julia, your incredible tender, the pre-trip engine checks. Sharing just enough yet still keeping enough myster about the magic of these places. Swims and hikes. So nice.
    Congratulations for making it all the way down to La Paz in the Sea of Cortez🎉

      I just thought the way she shoulders into weather looks as comfortable as a plastic boat on a beam reach, or running down wind. Julia seems to make the most uncomfortable point of sail to be a stroll in the park.

    I cruised based out of La Paz in 1994 for two weeks. It was beautiful there. Did you encounter any crime while tied off on moorings at night? We experienced locals that would drift with the tide and attempt to take anything they could reach on deck. We even got boarded once and fended off a guy trying to take our dingy.

    Iv been saving for 7 years and by the end of the year I will have over 100k but I’m so undecided on wether I want wooden or glass? I come from a family of carpenters and love wood and I understand it more then fiberglass but I hear that maintaining a wooden boat is much more expensive. would you go for the wooden after having one?

    • @talktalk199
      @talktalk199 2 роки тому

    • @MadisonBoatworks
      @MadisonBoatworks  2 роки тому +9

      For me, it always has to be wood. But you have to determine what is best for you. Much depends on your preferences and the specific boat you choose. A wooden boat in good condition is not necessarily more maintenance than a glass boat, that is a common fallacy. But wooden boats tend to have more varnish, and that is high maintenance. Most upkeep is to the systems which are the same either way. I do all my own work so that is not a high cost, but if you hire out everything you may have trouble getting experienced wooden boat builders in much of the world. If you buy wood, look for copper fastenings and get a boat in good condition especially the deck. Upkeep of a good hull is much easier than bringing a boat back from disrepair. Sailing a beautiful boat that was built by hand of natural materials adds so much satisfaction to our voyages, and for me that is worth it.

      @@MadisonBoatworks thank you, I guess I’ll be on the hunt for wood. Not a lot of wood boat knowledge on UA-cam so it’s hard to find opinions.

    You could make some decent extra income if you were to start uploading on a bi-weekly or monthly basis.. you have the gift of producing wonderful and honest content that people will gladly watch.. how long before you go back home and start building a sailboat of whatever design you choose from the keel to the masts
