I taught a painting class 19 years ago, and people asked me about getting "more definition" in the contours of a face, or clothing. I told them, "buy some cheap, soft molding clay. Every so often, take a break from painting, and try to mold a face, or a torso, or anything. Don't try to make a good sculpture/finished piece of art or become a sculptor "on the side", just let your hands mold things, and your brain will absorb this, and you'll see an improvement in your painted cheekbones, jawlines, etc." Everyone who tried this told me that they enjoyed a noticeable improvement in their painting. Happy painting, everyone!

@@michaelhaire7319 Thank you very much, very kind! The great thing about it is that you don't have to invest in sculpting tools, since the best effects seem to come from what the brain learns from our hands molding the clay. 😊. And you don't have to buy expensive clay, either, unless you want to. I hope it works for you like it worked for my students and art-pals!

    1. Make yourself a dish for dinner that you've never eaten or heard of before.

    4. Create one artwork in a completely different medium than what you're used to.

This video is so topical to me at the moment. To help get out of artist block, I’ve been putting together “mood boards” for a couple pieces I want to do and it’s helping me become more visually aware of different components and aspects of a painting/illustration. These paintings are Star Wars related so I’m working in the familiar, but I’m learning more about lighting (taking my own photos and experimenting with light), atmosphere, storytelling, things that I’d expect in a cinematography class😅. And after I’ve gathered a good amount of reference photos and my own sketches to utilize, I write bullet points about the overall theme and what sticks out to me; kinda like analyzing a piece of literature. I really recommend looking at concept art of a fav movie/video game because those are great for studying and teaching yourself how to tell a story or evoke a certain emotion. Its been a fun brainstorming exercise that doesn’t revolve around a particular art technique or medium. Everything said in this video is helping me even more! Definitely need to dive into the unfamiliar. Thank you Alpay!!

The best thing I did right fron the beginning when I was exploring my creative side was to start a journal. Inside I would include anything that inspired me from a family photo to a leaflet to an art exhibition. Eventually I expanded that to include noting down the new techniques I picked up, colour mixing recipes and when I struggled drawing heads properly I even included several methods to help remind me such as the loomis method etc.

Seeing work in progress videos on art is always soothing. It calms my nerves, and fire up inspiration. Lift up my mood, and see hope better. Painting, sketching, and just making art, or just watching art videos, especially yours, has always been something I look forward to after work. I don't finish my artwork in one go. I just let myself work on it whenever I have the urge, and once it's begun, I stop by at my small desk and tweak something here and paint something there and just let myself immersed in the flow of mood until I feel that it's enough.
Thank you for sharing us these videos. Especially in these hard times.

I've always been so arrogant as to be completely satisfied with thinking that my current skill level is all I need. Or maybe its the usual artists fear of failure that convinces me that's the truth, when in fact I actually want to 'improve'. Then again, if I think im able to 'improve'...thats like thinking there's a right way and a wrong way to create, I dont like that idea. Not sure why I clicked the video as I knew the answer, yet was hoping you might have some magical art hack to greatness, when we all know full well it's all down to DULL, REPETITIVE, CONSISTENT WORK.
