There are videos that are a waste of time. There are videos that provide information. And then there are videos that transcend the medium, exceeding all expectation of what the medium can provide. This is one of those vlogs, Florent. Definitely a "watch it again" vlog.
Florent, you are a true teacher. You speak clearly, show your happiness in painting, and teach good concepts. I learn from you because I like your approach. Thank you so much.
Every time I listen to anyone speak of hue and chroma I get overwhelmed. You teach it the best of anyone I have listened to. And yet, I still get confused. In listening to this video, it honestly dawned on me that I am not and will never be a technical painter. I will never see improvement in the way you spoke. And in that moment I felt defeated. That I will never reach a point in my work that I feel profient as well as happy. I kept listening to the video and as you reached the 11 minute mark, you began to speak of the intangible reasons some people paint and those who prepare vs those who dive in. I dive in and see what happens everytime. I am the happiest, the free-est when I simply let it flow. Maybe they aren't the best paintings but they are all reworkable if needed- or not. The best thing is that as you spoke through this last part, THIS last part... you gave me my joy back. THANK YOU. Sometimes we just need someone to say it's OK to be who we are meant to be. Today that someone was you.
I know what you mean : I'm the opposite, I'm very analytical and technical. But for a long time, for me, being a "technical" painter was an excuse not to own my true, meaningful art. Now, I manage to combine my overly analytical side with my spontaneous inspiration but it wasn't always easy. You have to go with what feels right, you don't need to be technical, you just need to be yourself. 🙏
I've been oil painting for about 12 years and the last section of this video on what makes a painting a painting and not a photograph is EXACTLY where I've come, and your words brought me to tears it was so moving and correct, words that I could never put in those words as you did. This video is awesome. Thanks!!!
This has to be the most beautiful and important art video I have ever watched. I am going through a change in art style right now. I am painting a way that I feel most comfortable with not what I feel I am expected to do and I absolutely love every brush stroke. Thank you for your time and heartfelt advice.
"Let the painting be the painting." Damn. That´s it! You just put my #1 rule in music making into a presise and elegant statement! "Let the painting be the painting." "What is the reason - for you - for this painting to be a painting and not anything else?" I´ll pass this on to all my students and collaborators, and make it a mantra for inspiration. You painters are truly inspiring people. You´ve got me inspired and all fired up! Thanks!
I'm a color blind artist but I cheat by reading the labels on the paint containers. My art teacher wants me to paint color the way I see it but I don't have the guts! After watching this video I must think to become an honest painter. Great video. Thank you.
Thanks, Florent. Lot's of people have information on how to paint, but almost no one addresses why to paint, how it is a spiritual exercise and not merely a technical demonstration of skills one has mastered. Confronting oneself and the world one faces and expressing that is the essence of art as you have so ably noted. As respects light, "the sun is God," JMW Turner. If he didn't say it he should have as it captures the essence of why light resonates through all good representational art as you have noted. Thanks again for the inspiration.
Florent, you amaze me, your kindness and sensitivity is something that is rarely found in our world today. I love all of your videos. They are filled with so much depth and understanding. I am working on a painting that I started a few months ago. I started this painting with joy in my mind and heart. It is a painting that depicts great love, between a brother and his two sisters. I'm sure you know the story from the New Testament of Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha, and the joy they experienced when Christ brought him back from death. My oldest son died unexpectedly right after I started the painting on Feb. 5th 2022, he took his own life. I have painted my whole life off and on, and only done one other portrait. After my son passed away, my husband and I got Covid. We are recovering, but now I am stuck not feeling I can complete this painting. But I do thank you for your work and your teaching abilities, you have helped me a lot. I guess I should be patient with myself and do what I can. Thank you Florent for being who you are. Karolyn
I'm so glad you make UA-cam videos. Your videos are poetry to me, as I've sad in other videos of yours. You inspire me so much. And when I start to feel lost or overwhelmed, I always come back to your videos. Thank you for loving real art. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your thoughts. ❤️
Thanks for watching, remember to leave a like and subscribe to support the channel and if you want to learn more, you'll find all my resource links in the description box. As always, joy and inspiration to you my friends 😊🎨🙏
I sometimes paint very spontaneously with no preparation as I just have to get a painting out of my hands. Other times I take hours to finish something. It's a struggle. My fast alla prima paintings are very cartoonish and that frustrates me.
Wow, you open my eyes. Thank you. I’m struggling with elephants in lights from behind, I was focus on the elephants when it’s the light that is the key. 🧡🇸🇪
Your passion for painting has all the attributes of an artist that has tremendous experience. I find it not only informative ,but infectious! Please continue with the live museum videos as well. The adage of "OLD SOUL" resides with you.
This information is so valuable to me it makes me cry. I am truly watching someone that will be a renowned painter for centuries. Thank you is not enough ♥️
Wow, the last advice hit me hard. I had been drawing all my life before 26 as a hobby, but 4 years ago I started deliberately practising drawing for 2 years, then with digital painting. I'm not making the progresss I'D like to do because I really struggle with realism - or maybe even hyperrealism is what my brain wants me to achieve. I often hate myself for being so incabable of reaching a level of realism... It is nice to hear your advice on "don't make perfect paintings, make something that has your traces in it".
Thanks for your comment, yeah, don't be too hard on yourself, but know that you are probably someone who loves to paint clean, sharp and intricate details. It doesn't have to be hyper-realistic, but it has to be "hyper-you", that's for sure 😊🎨👍
Brilliant presentation, a master in communication and very knowledgeable about the art world, the real art world that is. Thank you very much. Here is to all our art journeys!
I was literally moved to tears by your uplifting and insightful message in this video - thank you doesn't come close...what you are doing matters greatly. 🙏
The depth of meaning behind your words is truly monumental. I feel and comprehend as you explain and it directly affects me, personally. Either by describing my shared view or presenting another. Your engaging videos go beyond simple tips or guides, but teeter on the very brink of personal enlightenment . I am grateful to have found your channel, an more so for your hypnotic delivery method of knowledge. Perfect ambiance, cadence, tone and subject matter. Perfect.
I was completely mesmerised with your explanation. I started painting 4 January this year. I don’t have any drawing talent but a passion for abstract art. To hear your words right now has been illuminating to me. Thank you so much for your generosity to share.
Hi new oil Pinter here! Novice artists in all other mediums. Sending a HUGE thank you! I have learned so much from your videos. I have immediately applied the techniques and see a difference already. I have never taken art classes, I am a late blooming 48 year old RN that is finally listening to the 10 year old artist who still lives inside me! Self taught through UA-cam.. thank you for sharing your knowledge!
What an inspiring and informative video. I could feel emotion welling up inside me by the final message- be the painter you want to be. Thank you so much!
It's almost as if you heard me having this conversation with myself. Where is the light? What is it showing me? What was it about my reference that caught my attention so that I took the photograph? What do I feel about it? How do I interpret that and use my painting to best convey what I want to say to the viewers? The ideas give a starting point and framework to fill with my painting. Your explanations are easily making perfect sense. Thank you!
Florent, this is one of your best videos, and that's saying a lot. Your words really spoke to me, and your wisdom and insight are astounding. Thank you.
as i started painting 1 year ago, i am going with the flow of my emotions, hand and mind, its like an ancient knowledge in me coming out and your words are lovely, thank you
Merci Florent, pour ces explications claires et pleines de sensibilité! Abonnée de longue date, j'ai toujours autant de plaisir à apprendre de tes vidéos!
I dont think hyper realism style paintings are vain... i think they draw you in closer to look at the detail. I personally love painting that make you double take... and go wow that's a painting!!!
As Larry Marshall below, has so eloquently stated, "this is one of those videos", and I'm SO glad I stumbled upon it... It has made me think very strongly about not trying to be a "photographic" painter, and aim for perfect duplication of realism, but rather, allow my personality to come through and adorn my works from now on... otherwise, what's the point????? Look at Van Gogh, my God, what style, what a departure from realism, and regarded as one of the world's greatest masters, because of his interpretation of his subject, using his imagination and style...thank you Florent for making me think again about this!!
Cher Florent tu m'as scotché ... plein de conseils majestueux tellement importants et quelle sagesse artistique !!!!!!! Que du bonheur de t'écouter ... sur ce je m'abonne.
Wow. I am so impressed with Mr. Farges's beautiful summation of what it means to be a painter... an artist. Mr. capsulizes his message with such care and sensitivity. THANK YOU Florent... For that insight!! I believe that I am ready now to step up my pace to explore new horizons in the world of art. I will definitely keep this thought of "self expression" in the fore front. 😊👍🖼🎨⚘

Another brilliantly thought-provoking video that goes far deeper than the more technical aspects to painting. You've discussed the "why," now you address the "how".
Thank you very much for your beautiful word’s, My sister tell’s me once when I had a portret off her grandson, Edmee you let thesoul come out off the painting. That was for me the ever biggest compliment that I ever had. Andd beleve me the portret was not as good that i now paint. So yes I believe that your words are beautiful and that every painting becomse much beautifl if yu stay to yourself and your loving soul. 🙏🏼
Great inspiration and great time to rethink what I’m doing. I just finished a portrait out of fun and I realized that the color of the face is way too light. Why? I painted at night. So much difference when painting during the day. Lesson learned. Thanks for this great video. Blessings and take care.
Hey this guy is cool. Now THIS guy is a TRUE TEACHER of fine arts!! 🤔 I've had to lay down my brushes & pallets for a number of years now for other pursuits. Unfortunately I had lost all that valuable time, and now I've become an immature, ignorant & unlearned "amature" artist. Hopefully this guy can bring me up to speed in the fine arts world now in my "golden" years.😊🌿⚘🖼🎨
What A powerful video, best painting advice i’ve ever gotten and I believe it’s the only advice you need to become the artist you want to be. Thankyou for making these great video’s, they have helped me so much on my journey🖤🌹
Oh my I love Claude Monet paintings ❤❤❤Striving to get better each day. I love your in-depth information on this tutorial. I couldn’t agree more that painting is far greater than taking photos. Something about the touches of paintbrushes not everyone understands.🔥🔥🔥🔥
For perfect studio light: Feit Electric corn bulb. I have a small studio so I only need one 500W-equivalent bulb but a large studio might need 2 1,000W equivalent bulbs. Perfect bright even daylight, no shadows or reflections
You endure my passion to paint! Thank you so much for sharing so much content and knowledge with us , people who just want to express creativity through oil painting.
Thank you Florent for your insight and knowledge. Your examples are so informative and helpful in explaining why some paintings work better than others. I shall endeavor to improve my paintings. Merci!😃
Cant beleive i only just found this channel. Incredinbly informative and somehow inspiring too. Im not even a painter im a comic artist and every bit of this information translates very easily. You are a fantastic teacher sir
I do oil painting from my imagination not any photographs and models Now I am trying to improve my 3d imagination of subject in painting and giving them light from one side . Thank you . Love you
The information in this video is so fundamental and essential, so thank you! Your video editing and composition skills have greatly improved and even in this medium, your art is extremely pleasing to look at. Keep up the good work! One day when I have enough money, I plan to buy your course and learn from you :) Merci.
Always inspiring Florent. Thank you so much. I just had a portfolio appraisal which was really useful in many ways but he and you concur with the philosophy of doing what you love to do. I persist with oils through a sense of obligation...it is the highest expression of skill supposedly. However what I love to do is draw and cartoon! So while I can still paint and will, I will do it when I feel I want to not because I HAVE to get better in some personal struggle or competition. Am I missing something?

Great
Yes you said it. Simply astonishingly meaning for those looking for just this. Thankyou Florent 🙏🏼
Thank you so much!
Came from Nawras Sattar. Thank you for sharing these golden tips.

I enjoyed your topic today about light.
Your videos are so neat and inspirational, full of authenticity and hope. I always learn a LOT from you. Thank you so much.
You are so welcome! Glad you like my work 😊🙏
The element of something done by hand carries with it a part of the person who created it.
You are great Florent, thank you so much for your effort and way to pass knowledge

What an inspiring and informative video. I could feel emotion welling up inside me by the final message- be the painter you want to be. Thank you so much!
Thanks, so glad you felt connected to my message 😊
Thanks for creating this wonderful and inspiring video. The 3 tips are super helpful. Cheers
It's almost as if you heard me having this conversation with myself. Where is the light? What is it showing me? What was it about my reference that caught my attention so that I took the photograph? Florent, this is one of your best videos, and that's saying a lot. Your words really spoke to me, and your wisdom and insight are astounding. Thank you.
Beautifully expressed!
Thank you kindly! 😊🙏
You are simply great.
You rightly said...
Become a painter not a picture maker.
This is most important in the world of digital photography.
🙌🏻
The last section of the video was amazing, your words are really inspiring. Thank you for making this video, i learnt a lot from it.
This is probably the first painting video full of sensation that I've ever watched. Thank you, it was beautiful.
Wow, thank you! I'm glad you liked it !
as i started painting 1 year ago, i am going with the flow of my emotions, hand and mind, its like an ancient knowledge in me coming out and your words are lovely, thank you
Merci Florent, pour ces explications claires et pleines de sensibilité! Abonnée de longue date, j'ai toujours autant de plaisir à apprendre de tes vidéos!
Yes! Be true to your self. Own your brushstrokes and style and become the painter you are. 🙂
I dont think hyper realism style paintings are vain... i think they draw you in closer to look at the detail. I personally love painting that make you double take... and go wow that's a painting!!!
You have helped me so much! Thank you.♥️
This was a beautiful video. Thanks.
I really appreciated the philosophical talk at the end about self knowledge and style. Thank you.
Cher Florent tu m'as scotché ... plein de conseils majestueux tellement importants et quelle sagesse artistique !!!!!!! Que du bonheur de t'écouter ... sur ce je m'abonne.
The commentary in the last third cut through my cynical, jaded layers, and "spoke' to me right where I want to live as a painter. Thank you.
Wow. I am so impressed with Mr. Farges's beautiful summation of what it means to be a painter... an artist. Mr. capsulizes his message with such care and sensitivity. Thank you for being a true inspiration to your viewers. I am a painter of pastels and oils with much to learn about both mediums. I will definitely be back for more!
Thank you so much ✨😊🙏
Thank you so much.....the ending on this was awesome and a healthy reminder to me of my own artistic path. Florent that was such a blessing
Thanks for explaining..the 3rd one makes may eyes open..
I just want you to know how amazing you really are. Not just as an artist but as in the way your brain works. Don't get me wrong as an artist you are phenomenal, that goes without saying. I love your videos, your style and just everything about your channel. I have just recently started oil painting and im not sure i would even know where to start if not for you. Yeah i could research and maybe watch other people videos but I'm sure they wouldn't compare to learning from you. I hope to be able to buy your lesson. I have a feeling that it's most likely golden in regards to upping my skill level. Thanks for not only all that you do for the way you do it as well
Amazing! You are my favorite Artist and the best teacher. You love what you do,thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

For that insight!!
I believe that I am ready now to step up my pace to explore new horizons in the world of art.

Thank you , great teaching.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, your words are very deep and very incouraging! I agree with all you have said here, especially about the reason for and essense of painting...
A wonderful presentation. Sometimes we can only hear what we are ready to hear. This is a gorgeous return to basics.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another brilliantly thought-provoking video that goes far deeper than the more technical aspects to painting.
You've discussed the "why," now you address the "how".
I’m really enjoying your series. Thank you for all of it.
Thank you for all your information and the inspiration to be our own artistic self!
Thank you so much for all your advice ❤️❤️❤️
You are so welcome! 😊
You are truly an inspiration. I especially like the ending about being true to yourself.
Your video is really honest and inspiring, thank you so much
Thank you very much for your beautiful word’s, My sister tell’s me once when I had a portret off her grandson, Edmee you let thesoul come out off the painting. That was for me the ever biggest compliment that I ever had.
Andd beleve me the portret was not as good that i now paint. So yes I believe that your words are beautiful and that every painting becomse much beautifl if yu stay to yourself and your loving soul. 🙏🏼
Wonderful video, especially the talk at the end; truly inspiring. Thank you for everything you do!!
Let the painting be a painting….love your statement….the painter is not a camera or copy machine COMPOSE DON’T COPY
Thanks Florent, another excellent talk!!!
Wow! #3 inspired me more than any other video I've watched in 5 years!
I've had to lay down my brushes & pallets for a number of years now for other pursuits.
Unfortunately I had lost all that valuable time, and now I've become an immature, ignorant & unlearned "amature" artist.
Hopefully this guy can bring me up to speed in the fine arts world now in my "golden" years.😊🌿⚘🖼🎨
I paint for 2 years now, and this is exactly what i needed... Thank you
What A powerful video, best painting advice i’ve ever gotten and I believe it’s the only advice you need to become the artist you want to be. Thankyou for making these great video’s, they have helped me so much on my journey🖤🌹
Thank you . . . Idon'tknow why I keep forgetting that light is number one . . . you spoke so elegantly about its power . . . . I hope I remember. 🙂
merci pour cette vidéo, je me sens revigoré et galvanisé pour mon prochain tableau !

Many thanks, you are doing the art itself in your videos, congratulations, you are the one who make a difference
Got my subscription with this one video. More to see now!

Very very good statement Florent !!
Thank you Florent for your insight and knowledge. Your examples are so informative and helpful in explaining why some paintings work better than others. I shall endeavor to improve my paintings. Merci!😃

If it's something you feel forced to, this won't be the medium that expresses the best of your creativity, go with what feels right ! Always.
