This movie reminded me that there's a place for tragic and sympathetic villains, but there's' also a place for villains that are completely and utterly evil, without a shred of humanity or decency. To paraphrase him, Orlok is a pure monster, hunger and desire given form. Nothing else. And I love that.
Yes. It's become so normal nowadays to always give some kind of backstory that gives us empathy for the villains. So refreshing just having a pure monster!

I, too, fully had this thought and refuse to accept any other theory. If we trust all he says in the final act, this is just the first time he actually got to the scene while a (the?) Nosferatu was still there.
Was she faking it. She already said Nosferatu gave her most pleasure. She didn't need to fake that. She also didn't need to fake her love for him since Nosferatu said it himself, if she didn't agree to be with him, Nosferatu will kill her husband. So, she giving in already force, technically speaking.
Something else about cats that I find particularly interesting is the fact that Orlok has an association with rats, as they symbolize disease and were the reason the plague came to Wisburg. Since cats hunt rats, it kinda makes sense that Von Franz would keep them around as pets.
it was people's fault that there was a plague, when they killed women they thought were witches, they killed massive amount of cats because of their stupid superstitions. This kills me because I love cats and none of this is their fault or the women, and I love rats and they end up blamed for so much when its all human's religious superstitious fault none of it the animals they would know what to do
The fact he’s doing Labyrinth after this I cannot wrap my head around. The tonal difference between Eggers and that 80s fever dream is either going to be brilliant or a nightmare. Either way I’m down.
I don’t really want anything more with Labyrinth because it wouldn’t have Bowie or Henson, but if anyone can make a movie that destroys my apprehensions, it’d be Eggers.

I found many parts of this movie absolutely hilarious. I chuckled through Orlocks introduction. He comes off as a kind, observant, and thoughtful man, if you’re listening to what he’s saying. Contrasting with the horror of what he is and what’s happening. That’s comedy gold.
As a German mysf, I was absolutely stunned by the attention to detail, of this film. Especially the interior of the rooms, the furniture and the style were absolutely authentic. And the little kitsch pieces weren't just perfectly german. No those lil things were even placed at the right spot! I have never seen a depiction of Germany this authentic... in an American movie.
Noting too - she describes Orlock as a Romanian nobleman, when he’s from Moravia. So he’s Slovakian. It’s a great representation, since Zipser Saxons settled in Moravia for centuries for the mining. Not sure where it’s filmed but a beautiful depiction of the High Tatras

I did find the hard cut to Thomas lying on the floor after that first feeding to be unintentionally hilarious. But I am also a scaredy cat when it comes to horror and was trying to cope

the euphoria the character feel at being attacked by orlok make me think about how some victims of r*pe will unwittingly have orgasms even though they are NOT wanting to, separating the body's responses and their own urges and feeling. reflexes and intents. being forced to feel orgasms when you don't want to have been described as one of the most humiliating experience, your body betraying you - and it absolutely fits the movie's themes. probably why even today a lot of people still are super icky about learning about sexuality, because they associate a body's natural processes as 'sinful' and it makes it so hard to separate desires and sensations.
As a vampire nerd, I can say it really resembles the Vampires from Vampire: The Masquerade. In the original TTRPG and the adaptations it’s actually a thing for vampires- their bite is described as “the kiss” since it gives pleasure to the bitten, even when they resist, adding another level of horror to the vampire’s bite. It’s absolutely about taking full control of the victim and basically gaslighting them using their automatic responses.
I had no clue that was Bill Skarsgard when I first watched the movie. His dialect, the way he would roll his Rs or just drag a word out really impressed me with how sinister it could be. Like wow, there is disappearing and then there is the level he reaches with his acting.
Nosferatu is a remake done RIGHT - He picked a movie that NEEDED an update (i can't stand silents, i need audio) - he put EFFORT into it - picked a cast that DIDN'T PHONE IT IN - from my understanding he didn't stray too far?
the plot is pretty close to the original in all the main beats, but he put a greater focus on Ellen. in the original, she's more of the typical woman as sacrificial victim archetype, but Eggers always writes such great female characters.

I think just about everyone phoned it in except for Lily-Rose. She was the only one who seemed to actually be able to work with the dialogue. Maybe Ralph Ineson and Willem Dafoe to a degree as well, although Ralph Ineson can just about make anything work and all Willem Dafoe needs to do is ham it up.
I am a long time Eggers fan and I could feel that he was doing good research but I fully believed it during the scenes in the Orthodox Monastery. I come from Greece and we used to go to monasteries instead of our usual parish for some of the big holidays (Easter mostly) and the icons, the wall paintings, the low lighting, the feel and even details like the candle holders were extremely accurate and authentic. It was almost like a memory.
Yeah! I watched the movie with my mum who is from Romania herself (Not transylvania, but a neighbouring region) and she was absolutely DELIGHTED by how accurate the orthodox scene was. The romanian lines where also pronounced in the proper dialect, which also made hwr happy. It is not rare for a vampire movie to feature romania, but it is not seen often that it is depicted accurately.
Considering Eggers’ clear love of history and authenticity, I would love to see him make movies on actual historical events and people and what he does with that enormous amount of material. Imagine if Eggers made Napoleon instead of Ridley “historians need to get a life” Scott
While that would definitely be something to see, he likes utilizing the folklore of those regions and time, and to my knowledge those beliefs weren't particularly important to Napoleon so it's probably just a pipe dream.
Nah. As a big history fan. You don’t want it. Movies aren’t documentaries. They have dramatic elements. Eggars trying to recreate the “feeling” of, a Norse Saga, for example. Is infinitely better than a history documentary. I say this as someone who loves history documentaries 😂
I mean, I loved the Shape of Water. I want to see more gay monsters and human love stories or a female monster (actual mosnter. Not a model with some "monster like" features) with a human male love story.
I love how Lugosi was so much of a heartthrob he MADE vampires attractive simply by playing the role. Reminds me of other role-defying casting choices like how in the original book and the more recent series, the Cenobite Hell Priest was actually a woman, but in the original movie, Clive Barker loved Doug Bradley’s performance so much, he decided to cast him in the role. And thus we have the female Cenobite character who’s a nod to the book, and would go on to be the visual inspiration for the Ascended Knight in Fear and Hunger.

a couple of years ago there were also rumors that he might star in chloé zhao's dracula adaptation! i remember getting so excited about it that i dreamt about meeting him in person to ask him if he's gonna take up that role "and complete the holy trinity of bat-related men" 😂😂
Gothic/ Romantic horror is the OG horror genre, but not done a lot today. I saw the silent film Nosferatu in a cathedral with a live organ that was an experience. Haven’t seen this film yet but I really want to.
Yep, there's only one romance in Wurthering Heights and it's at the very end between two characters who actually deserve a happy ending. The rest of it is basically a self-help book on "Why NOT to date someone" coverning, "He's Rich" "She's exciting" "He's a Bad Boy" "Pity" and "She's wealthy and throwing herself at me and it'd piss off her brother and the woman I'm into who married him, so why the heck not?" - which the last is, admittedly, very specific but you know, you could summarize it as "revenge."
Yes!! When we read WH in high school everyone absolutely hated it because 1. 1800s prose isn't easy, but more importantly 2. Almost all the characters suck. My little bro is reading it in school this year and I warned him that the characters aren't supposed to be enjoyable, nothing good ever happens, and that's okay. It's just a book about miserable people trapped in a miserable place. And WH is probably my favorite book of all time 😂 I wonder what that says about me!
In the last five years or so, I’ve revisited all the books I read in high school and at university to see if are has given be a better perspective… except for Withering Heights. I can’t do it.
@@llbearll I actually really enjoyed it. It's a good book, probably my favorite of the Bronte Sisters books. But they keep trying to sell it as the romance it's definitely not. Hence why it's more fun to enjoy it as both Regency Thriller and Regency "Why not to marry."
Hoult having played Renfield not long ago kept me so tickled while watching this. It was so cool to see him in a movie with another Renfield around, like a little vampire movie universe.
I feel like Nicholas' character didn't leave because was he under a kind of hypnosis ever since he arrived to that city or village. It felt very dream like or nightmarish. I even felt like I was in a trance.
4:48, "Disease" is the best way to describe Orlok, in this film especially. He causes physical, mental AND spiritual illness to those he interacts with, he poisons people's sanity, nearly destroys the new couple's relationship, and deems himself above the beings he makes suffer. He is pure greed (14:49 and arguably loneliness, a desire for companion with someone else "not of human kind", as Ellen is a psychic, but bore out of that same greed, not love) indulging himself until it inadvertently kills him, 32:44, which you can also construe as something he wanted. 12:27, And yes, the color is fantastic, with the moonlight grey being a perfect way of showing Orlok's influence (notably, the grey light replacing the sunlight as Thomas was about to stab the dormant Orlok was an awesome way to show the power dynamics of the scene switching because Thomas waiting too long to try killing him), and the use of sunlight created a sense of purity, hope comfort that Orlok's influence would be countered until it finally does happen.
Nicholas Hoult's face in the pic with the gifted prosthetic wang is fantastic. This movie is awesome, and I was glad to find out the reason for the one thing I felt was a bit odd (the moustache; because if you look at any Eastern-European portrait of a male from that timeframe, he's gonna have a 'stache like that).
Thomas in Orloks castle was my favorite in the entire film. Anytime we were there I was on edge until we moved on. Nicholas Hoult was perfect in his display of being absolutely exhausted and petrified and then Bill as Orlok??? Wow. The voice??? Incredible. Those two were my highlights. Lily was stunning as Ellen. My heart hurt for this woman🥺
Even though, Lily Rose is a “Nepo baby” who starred in that horrible “The Idol”, I was happy to hear she did a great job on this movie. I don’t think Eggers would have been cool with the choice if he didn’t know she could do it. It’s great to see one of the best directors and writers continue to make another really good movie.
She’s a fantastic actress, it’s definitely the writing that caused the majority of the issues (ahem, don’t forget The Weeknd’s tantrum on twitter, ahem).
Her performance in this film genuinely looked physically exhausting but sold so much of the fear, I was extremely impressed. It was Oscar worthy, but unfortunately the Academy is full of elitest snobs who hate horror movies and refuse to acknowledge them in the acting categories.
Honestly tho, Dracula itself hasn't gotten an actual good adaptation ever. Nosferatu hit so many emotional beats found in the OG Dracula book than in the hundreds of Dracula film adaption. Dracula was never seen as a seducer in the original book, he was seen as a plague, disease. Nosferatu has been the most faithful Dracula movie in terms of tone. I wasn't mad, i was elated. Finally, a proper adaptation
My boyfriend is a harsh critic for most movies. After we saw this in theaters, he was absolutely enamored. It was the first time I've ever seen a movie leave him speechless in the best way! We loved it so much!!
About the book, I don’t think Orlock meant for them to find it (which might mean Ellen’s soul is safe). In folklore, the Solomonari are required to write down all their knowledge in a single book. So I think part of his pact was that Orlock would have to keep that book - which would include knowledge of how to destroy him.
The fascinating thing about the arguments over Orlok's appearance is that Shreck's bald, feral original is considered the apotheosis of the truly monstrous vampire, the inverse of Legosi's elegantly sinister Dracula, and a repudiation of the Anna Rice pretty boy. And that's well earned. But anyone who has ever read Stoker's novel will know that Egger's Orlok is more faithful than either Murnau or Browning's counts are. Personally, and speaking as a fairly jaded horror fan, I think this is one of the most effective portrayals of a purely evil being in recent cinema. It has really got under my skin.
Fun Fact: this movie was produced by Chris Columbus. director of harry potter 1 and 2, home alone 1 and 2, Mrs.Doubtfire, and writer of goonies and gremlins. he was also executive producer of Eggers first 2 movies( the vvitch and the lighthouse) he's also Robert Eggars mentor.
The DGA has a podcast and they had Columbus and eggers on. In that interview it’s implied, at least to me, that Harry Potter was used partially to how they showed the castle

One theory about why the bubonic plague got as bad as it did was because a pope associated cats with the occult and therefore with evil so many places encouraged killing cats. And then you have a rodent problem. And then you have diseases spread by rodents problem
One thing I liked about the breaking of the curse is how the spoken lines talk about a maiden (which is another word for virgin) when it's been made clear that Ellen is very much not one in the traditional sense. Leaning into the social construct of virginity. It doesn't matter that Ellen and Thomas have been at it like bunnies, Ellen's a maiden when a maiden is required for the spell.

As a fellow lover of cats, I also appreciated the tet-a-tet about the cat belonging to herself between DaFoe and Depp. They truly know their kitties. One last bit: probably one of my favorite smash cuts of all time was in the movie. When Thomas is trying to scream but can’t, just like in a nightmare, Eggers inserts the cry of a gull before cutting to the ocean with Anna and Ellen. Chef’s kiss perfection!
I've seen some people disliking Bill's Nosferatu, but I personally loved how different it is from the others. I think people wanted more of him and have more charm and charisma or something.
The second that the cat jumped up on the bed at the beginning, I was in. So glad I caught this one in theaters - wasn’t sure about it from the trailer but really enjoyed it and the ‘stache!
Sort of off topic? But Amanda, as a fellow queer vampire-enjoyer, if you're not watching Interview With the Vampire you need to be. It's hands down some of the best tv out there, every single person involved in that show has poured their heart and soul into it and it is obvious in every frame. I don't need a video on it (although it could use the press, it's criminally overlooked) but I just need to know that you're not missing out. Season two was genuinely insane, and I just feel like you would love it!
Im a goth girl and i want my goth movies to be goth af, and Robert Eggers gave us exactly that. I love it, i love how freaking beautiful this movie is, i love how he used the light and the shadows, i love how he used that cold light to contrast to the darkness and create the black and white cinema effect with not only paid homage to the original Nosferatu but also to contrast with the beautiful golden light of the dawn that killed Nosferatu, so fucking beautiful. I love how Robert Eggers is a big history nerd and goes deep to bring that to his movies. Call me Nosferatu cause im obsessed with Robert Eggers and i want people to throw him money so he can make many more movies
I wonder how a dark horror gothic romance like Nosferatu would be like if it was set in modern times. Not exactly like Interview with a Vampire, but something less flashy and more horror or gloomy.
When I saw Nosferatu for the first time, in the theater, I remember the first scene with Thomas sitting at the table with Orlok and how it filled me with a deep-seated sense of uneasiness. Then as I was watching I realized that I was feeling what Thomas was feeling and how that was such a master stroke. Nosferatu is an absolute masterpiece. It's a shame it didn't get nominated for picture, director, or any of the other performances because every single person in the film helps make it what it is.

I really liked how there is only a millisecond between Orloks death and the group rushing in to save her. You would think more time to breathe would be better, but it makes it all seem more futile that way.
9:55 No, Orlock couldn't be the Impaler, because Thomas specifically travels to Transylvania to go to his castle. Vlad the Impaler was not from that region, he ruled over Wallachia to the south and that is also where his personal castle was. It's also one of the main differences between the fictional Count Dracula and his real-life namesake.
Eggers is my favorite director. His stunning cinematography and ability to instill the feeling of dread has guaranteed that I will watch anything he makes. I think The Witch is still my favorite movie from him, but seeing Eggers receive bigger budgets and absolutely refusing to phone anything in has been a joy to watch over the years
I'm not the biggest fan of watching horrors (I watch your videos instead) but I decided to go to the cinema and watch this and I absolutely loved it. Not only it's a great horror, but it's also shot and edited wonderfully. I have to say that Orlok with moustaches reminds me of Jim Carrey in the Sonic movies though. And that unfortunately he wasn't walking around town with his coffin under his arm like he did in the 1922 movie, but I guess we can't have EVERYTHING.
Orlock's mustache went hard man. It fit that booming bassy voice. The part I didn't vibe with was that weird scene kid hair swoop. Looked like the bad guy from Fifth Element. I mean, it's a minor thing, but it stood out.
Small side note - I was stunned by how similarly this movie felt to Resident Evil: Village which is, of course, also inspired by classic monster movies. Such a good atmosphere was achieved.
I think the casting choices were great, though, since Nicholas Hoult played Dracula’s familiar in Renfield and Bill Skarsgaard played a vampire in Hemlock Grove.
I went to see this with my boyfriend this weekend and the fucking fire alarm went off with like 40 minutes left and we were PISSED. But we were really into it, so we just ended up buying it on VOD when we got home, and even our unintentional intermission couldn't kill my passion and enthusiasm for it. But I will definitely have to sit down and watch it all the way through, uninterrupted hopefully.

Aaron Taylor-Johnsons performance was absolutely ridiculous. I feel like he watched a compilation of 'Gentlemen' videos from Smosh Games in preparation and channelled his inner Spencer. Was waiting for him to put on a top hat.
That's the thing about Robert Eggers movies. He always makes these, "masculine" movies, but the way he write female characters, it's very impressive. It's like he's one of people who actually understands what Fight Club is about.
I read Dracula for the first time a few years ago, and whenever I describe the physical appearance of Dracula in the book to people who’ve never read it, I say, “don’t think Bela Lugosi or Nosferatu, think Count Chocula.” And I feel like Egger’s version of Orlock has traces of Stoker’s Dracula in it, which I found pretty cool.
I really wish Lily Rose Depp hadn't been in The Idol, it's the only thing I've ever seen her in and it's the only thing I think of when I see her in anything else 😅
so so glad you reviewed this. this is one of my favorite movies thus far, the cinematography was stunning, acting was fantastic, and it really feels like you get sucked into the story. phenomenal all around!!
theres one thing i picked up on but i dont know if it was intentional (but most everything with Eggers is so idk) the girl on the horse in the Romani village looked kinda similar to ellen, young, slim, long black hair. that may be nothing, but i think it was another piece of foreshadowing that ellen would be the sacrifice. Death is usually portrayed as a pale white horse, and thats what the Romani girl rode, and in a messed up way you could say that's what ellen had to do to complete the sacrifice as well (she had previously called Orlock death in other scenes). It was pretty much telling Thomas exactly what would need to happen. Another detail is I dont remember the Romani girl being tied or gagged or crying or fighting it, obviously there were the binds of coercion but again similar to Ellen there seems to be some component of willingness involved in the sacrifice. it's a theme throughout a lot of lore and stories, that true evil can only be vanquished not just with death but willing sacrifice. random af but think like harry and voldy.
My friend and I saw Nosferatu in theaters around Christmas time and it was one of the best movie-going experiences we've had in awhile. We've been quoting "my good fellow, why would you do that?" ever since.
That comment on Wuthering Heights around 14:55 🤯 I have always hated that book with a passion and I do not hate very many stories. This might be a reason indeed to revisit that story.
Oh! Didn't notice that he wakes up with a protective necklace on in the village! I was wondering how they weren't all dead so close to Orloks castle when the whole city is infected later in the movie just from his presence.

If you do reread Wuthering Heights, it’s important to note that “romance”, at the time, meant a book was focused on emotions and likely had some supernatural elements, not “relationship goals”. It would have been nice if that had been specified to me in high school English. Thanks for the video!
I loved this movie so much (a friend and I dressed up as vampires for the Christmas Eve showing), and my favorite detail is that pretty much all of the occult language, references, and symbolism used are accurate to what someone who studied the occult in 1830s Germany would be familiar with. When the doctor was introducing the concept of the occultist to other characters and mentioned the authors he had started reading I gasped in the theater. Eggers really does his homework and his films benefit so much for it!
My wild new years eve plans were to go see this in theaters and no regrets. I loved this so much. Afterwards seeing it reduced to nothing but moustache jokes online makes me roll my eyes for how amazing this film was and the acting.

My favorite vampires are the ones that take their legs off & must reattach them by dawn or they die Rubbing salt on the legs prevents them from being reattached, also transfers the curse to one.
I`ve just seen it today in the cinema and it was fantastic! The visuals were so satisfying, when Thomas is standing in the middle of the road waiting for the carriage...masterpiece. Not to mention the costumes, all the little details, simply amazing. I need to watch it again!!
I just saw this film not twelve hours ago and I am obsessed. I love Dracula stories and films. Van Helsing, Dracula Untold, Dracula 2000 (because who doesn't like a Dracula played by Gerard Butler???), and now Nosferatu. For film, it's one thing to have the characters go through events and trials, but what really sold it was the cinematography and sound design, it just elevated everything and made the film so much more visceral. I watched VVitch when it came out and I read that this was supposed to be Egger's second film and personally, I think he was right in waiting to bring out two more movies before doing this. His filmmaking evolution has done himself and this movie so well. I hope and pray this movie wins it's Oscar nominations because they are so well deserved.

Something else about cats that I find particularly interesting is the fact that Orlok has an association with rats, as they symbolize disease and were the reason the plague came to Wisburg. Since cats hunt rats, it kinda makes sense that Von Franz would keep them around as pets.

it was people's fault that there was a plague, when they killed women they thought were witches, they killed massive amount of cats because of their stupid superstitions. I found many parts of this movie absolutely hilarious. I chuckled through Orlocks introduction. He comes off as a kind, observant, and thoughtful man, if you’re listening to what he’s saying. Contrasting with the horror of what he is and what’s happening. That’s comedy gold.

As a German mysf, I was absolutely stunned by the attention to detail, of this film.
Especially the interior of the rooms, the furniture and the style were absolutely authentic. And the little kitsch pieces weren't just perfectly german. No those lil things were even placed at the right spot!
I have never seen a depiction of Germany this authentic... in an American movie.
Noting too - she describes Orlock as a Romanian nobleman, when he’s from Moravia. So he’s Slovakian. It’s a great representation, since Zipser Saxons settled in Moravia for centuries for the mining. Not sure where it’s filmed but a beautiful depiction of the High Tatras

the euphoria the character feel at being attacked by orlok make me think about how some victims of r*pe will unwittingly have orgasms even though they are NOT wanting to, separating the body's responses and their own urges and feeling. reflexes and intents. being forced to feel orgasms when you don't want to have been described as one of the most humiliating experience, your body betraying you - and it absolutely fits the movie's themes.
probably why even today a lot of people still are super icky about learning about sexuality, because they associate a body's natural processes as 'sinful' and it makes it so hard to separate desires and sensations.
As a vampire nerd, I can say it really resembles the Vampires from Vampire: The Masquerade. In the original TTRPG and the adaptations it’s actually a thing for vampires- their bite is described as “the kiss” since it gives pleasure to the bitten, even when they resist, adding another level of horror to the vampire’s bite. It’s absolutely about taking full control of the victim and basically gaslighting them using their automatic responses.
I had no clue that was Bill Skarsgard when I first watched the movie. His dialect, the way he would roll his Rs or just drag a word out really impressed me with how sinister it could be. Like wow, there is disappearing and then there is the level he reaches with his acting.
Especially considering that I expected a little albino goblin with bunny teeth.
For real, I was expecting to see Peter Stormare's name when the credits rolled.

the plot is pretty close to the original in all the main beats, but he put a greater focus on Ellen. in the original, she's more of the typical woman as sacrificial victim archetype, but Eggers always writes such great female characters.

I think just about everyone phoned it in except for Lily-Rose. She was the only one who seemed to actually be able to work with the dialogue. Maybe Ralph Ineson and Willem Dafoe to a degree as well, although Ralph Ineson can just about make anything work and all Willem Dafoe needs to do is ham it up.

I am a long time Eggers fan and I could feel that he was doing good research but I fully believed it during the scenes in the Orthodox Monastery. I come from Greece and we used to go to monasteries instead of our usual parish for some of the big holidays (Easter mostly) and the icons, the wall paintings, the low lighting, the feel and even details like the candle holders were extremely accurate and authentic. It was almost like a memory.
Yeah! I watched the movie with my mum who is from Romania herself (Not transylvania, but a neighbouring region) and she was absolutely DELIGHTED by how accurate the orthodox scene was. The romanian lines where also pronounced in the proper dialect, which also made hwr happy. It is not rare for a vampire movie to feature romania, but it is not seen often that it is depicted accurately.

I love how Lugosi was so much of a heartthrob he MADE vampires attractive simply by playing the role.
Reminds me of other role-defying casting choices like how in the original book and the more recent series, the Cenobite Hell Priest was actually a woman, but in the original movie, Clive Barker loved Doug Bradley’s performance so much, he decided to cast him in the role. And thus we have the female Cenobite character who’s a nod to the book, and would go on to be the visual inspiration for the Ascended Knight in Fear and Hunger.

Gothic/ Romantic horror is the OG horror genre, but not done a lot today. I saw the silent film Nosferatu in a cathedral with a live organ that was an experience. Haven’t seen this film yet but I really want to.

Yep, there's only one romance in Wurthering Heights and it's at the very end between two characters who actually deserve a happy ending. The rest of it is basically a self-help book on "Why NOT to date someone" coverning, "He's Rich" "She's exciting" "He's a Bad Boy" "Pity" and "She's wealthy and throwing herself at me and it'd piss off her brother and the woman I'm into who married him, so why the heck not?" - which the last is, admittedly, very specific but you know, you could summarize it as "revenge."
Yes!! When we read WH in high school everyone absolutely hated it because 1. 1800s prose isn't easy, but more importantly 2. Almost all the characters suck. My little bro is reading it in school this year and I warned him that the characters aren't supposed to be enjoyable, nothing good ever happens, and that's okay. It's just a book about miserable people trapped in a miserable place. And WH is probably my favorite book of all time 😂 I wonder what that says about me!
In the last five years or so, I’ve revisited all the books I read in high school and at university to see if are has given be a better perspective… except for Withering Heights. I can’t do it.

Hoult having played Renfield not long ago kept me so tickled while watching this. It was so cool to see him in a movie with another Renfield around, like a little vampire movie universe.
I feel like Nicholas' character didn't leave because was he under a kind of hypnosis ever since he arrived to that city or village. It felt very dream like or nightmarish. I even felt like I was in a trance.

4:48, "Disease" is the best way to describe Orlok, in this film especially. He causes physical, mental AND spiritual illness to those he interacts with, he poisons people's sanity, nearly destroys the new couple's relationship, and deems himself above the beings he makes suffer.
He is pure greed (14:49 and arguably loneliness, a desire for companion with someone else "not of human kind", as Ellen is a psychic, but bore out of that same greed, not love) indulging himself until it inadvertently kills him, 32:44, which you can also construe as something he wanted.
12:27, And yes, the color is fantastic, with the moonlight grey being a perfect way of showing Orlok's influence (notably, the grey light replacing the sunlight as Thomas was about to stab the dormant Orlok was an awesome way to show the power dynamics of the scene switching because Thomas waiting too long to try killing him), and the use of sunlight created a sense of purity, hope comfort that Orlok's influence would be countered until it finally does happen.
Nicholas Hoult's face in the pic with the gifted prosthetic wang is fantastic.
This movie is awesome, and I was glad to find out the reason for the one thing I felt was a bit odd (the moustache; because if you look at any Eastern-European portrait of a male from that timeframe, he's gonna have a 'stache like that).

Thomas in Orloks castle was my favorite in the entire film. Anytime we were there I was on edge until we moved on. Nicholas Hoult was perfect in his display of being absolutely exhausted and petrified and then Bill as Orlok??? Wow. The voice??? Incredible. Those two were my highlights. Lily was stunning as Ellen. My heart hurt for this woman🥺
Even though, Lily Rose is a “Nepo baby” who starred in that horrible “The Idol”, I was happy to hear she did a great job on this movie. I don’t think Eggers would have been cool with the choice if he didn’t know she could do it. It’s great to see one of the best directors and writers continue to make another really good movie.

Her performance in this film genuinely looked physically exhausting but sold so much of the fear, I was extremely impressed. It was Oscar worthy, but unfortunately the Academy is full of elitest snobs who hate horror movies and refuse to acknowledge them in the acting categories.

Honestly tho, Dracula itself hasn't gotten an actual good adaptation ever. Nosferatu hit so many emotional beats found in the OG Dracula book than in the hundreds of Dracula film adaption. Dracula was never seen as a seducer in the original book, he was seen as a plague, disease. Nosferatu has been the most faithful Dracula movie in terms of tone. I wasn't mad, i was elated. Finally, a proper adaptation

My boyfriend is a harsh critic for most movies. After we saw this in theaters, he was absolutely enamored. It was the first time I've ever seen a movie leave him speechless in the best way! We loved it so much!!
About the book, I don’t think Orlock meant for them to find it (which might mean Ellen’s soul is safe). In folklore, the Solomonari are required to write down all their knowledge in a single book. So I think part of his pact was that Orlock would have to keep that book - which would include knowledge of how to destroy him.
The fascinating thing about the arguments over Orlok's appearance is that Shreck's bald, feral original is considered the apotheosis of the truly monstrous vampire, the inverse of Legosi's elegantly sinister Dracula, and a repudiation of the Anna Rice pretty boy. And that's well earned. But anyone who has ever read Stoker's novel will know that Egger's Orlok is more faithful than either Murnau or Browning's counts are. Personally, and speaking as a fairly jaded horror fan, I think this is one of the most effective portrayals of a purely evil being in recent cinema. It has really got under my skin.

One theory about why the bubonic plague got as bad as it did was because a pope associated cats with the occult and therefore with evil so many places encouraged killing cats. One thing I liked about the breaking of the curse is how the spoken lines talk about a maiden (which is another word for virgin) when it's been made clear that Ellen is very much not one in the traditional sense. Leaning into the social construct of virginity.
It doesn't matter that Ellen and Thomas have been at it like bunnies, Ellen's a maiden when a maiden is required for the spell.

One last bit: probably one of my favorite smash cuts of all time was in the movie. When Thomas is trying to scream but can’t, just like in a nightmare, Eggers inserts the cry of a gull before cutting to the ocean with Anna and Ellen. Chef’s kiss perfection!
I've seen some people disliking Bill's Nosferatu, but I personally loved how different it is from the others. I think people wanted more of him and have more charm and charisma or something.

Sort of off topic? But Amanda, as a fellow queer vampire-enjoyer, if you're not watching Interview With the Vampire you need to be. It's hands down some of the best tv out there, every single person involved in that show has poured their heart and soul into it and it is obvious in every frame. I don't need a video on it (although it could use the press, it's criminally overlooked) but I just need to know that you're not missing out. Season two was genuinely insane, and I just feel like you would love it!

Im a goth girl and i want my goth movies to be goth af, and Robert Eggers gave us exactly that. I love it, i love how freaking beautiful this movie is, i love how he used the light and the shadows, i love how he used that cold light to contrast to the darkness and create the black and white cinema effect with not only paid homage to the original Nosferatu but also to contrast with the beautiful golden light of the dawn that killed Nosferatu, so fucking beautiful. I love how Robert Eggers is a big history nerd and goes deep to bring that to his movies. Call me Nosferatu cause im obsessed with Robert Eggers and i want people to throw him money so he can make many more movies
I wonder how a dark horror gothic romance like Nosferatu would be like if it was set in modern times. Not exactly like Interview with a Vampire, but something less flashy and more horror or gloomy.
When I saw Nosferatu for the first time, in the theater, I remember the first scene with Thomas sitting at the table with Orlok and how it filled me with a deep-seated sense of uneasiness. Then as I was watching I realized that I was feeling what Thomas was feeling and how that was such a master stroke. Nosferatu is an absolute masterpiece. It's a shame it didn't get nominated for picture, director, or any of the other performances because every single person in the film helps make it what it is.

I really liked how there is only a millisecond between Orloks death and the group rushing in to save her. You would think more time to breathe would be better, but it makes it all seem more futile that way.
9:55 No, Orlock couldn't be the Impaler, because Thomas specifically travels to Transylvania to go to his castle. Vlad the Impaler was not from that region, he ruled over Wallachia to the south and that is also where his personal castle was.

Eggers is my favorite director. His stunning cinematography and ability to instill the feeling of dread has guaranteed that I will watch anything he makes. I think The Witch is still my favorite movie from him, but seeing Eggers receive bigger budgets and absolutely refusing to phone anything in has been a joy to watch over the years

Seen it twice: watching it with respectful and curious older horror lovers, and a bunch of giggling teenagers are two very different experiences.
I'm not the biggest fan of watching horrors (I watch your videos instead) but I decided to go to the cinema and watch this and I absolutely loved it. Not only it's a great horror, but it's also shot and edited wonderfully.
I have to say that Orlok with moustaches reminds me of Jim Carrey in the Sonic movies though. And that unfortunately he wasn't walking around town with his coffin under his arm like he did in the 1922 movie, but I guess we can't have EVERYTHING.
Orlock's mustache went hard man. It fit that booming bassy voice. The part I didn't vibe with was that weird scene kid hair swoop. Looked like the bad guy from Fifth Element. I mean, it's a minor thing, but it stood out.
Small side note - I was stunned by how similarly this movie felt to Resident Evil: Village which is, of course, also inspired by classic monster movies. Such a good atmosphere was achieved.
I think the casting choices were great, though, since Nicholas Hoult played Dracula’s familiar in Renfield and Bill Skarsgaard played a vampire in Hemlock Grove.

I went to see this with my boyfriend this weekend and the fucking fire alarm went off with like 40 minutes left and we were PISSED. But we were really into it, so we just ended up buying it on VOD when we got home, and even our unintentional intermission couldn't kill my passion and enthusiasm for it. That's the thing about Robert Eggers movies. He always makes these, "masculine" movies, but the way he write female characters, it's very impressive. It's like he's one of people who actually understands what Fight Club is about.
I read Dracula for the first time a few years ago, and whenever I describe the physical appearance of Dracula in the book to people who’ve never read it, I say, “don’t think Bela Lugosi or Nosferatu, think Count Chocula.” And I feel like Egger’s version of Orlock has traces of Stoker’s Dracula in it, which I found pretty cool.

theres one thing i picked up on but i dont know if it was intentional (but most everything with Eggers is so idk) the girl on the horse in the Romani village looked kinda similar to ellen, young, slim, long black hair. that may be nothing, but i think it was another piece of foreshadowing that ellen would be the sacrifice. Death is usually portrayed as a pale white horse, and thats what the Romani girl rode, and in a messed up way you could say that's what ellen had to do to complete the sacrifice as well (she had previously called Orlock death in other scenes). It was pretty much telling Thomas exactly what would need to happen. If you do reread Wuthering Heights, it’s important to note that “romance”, at the time, meant a book was focused on emotions and likely had some supernatural elements, not “relationship goals”.

I loved this movie so much (a friend and I dressed up as vampires for the Christmas Eve showing), and my favorite detail is that pretty much all of the occult language, references, and symbolism used are accurate to what someone who studied the occult in 1830s Germany would be familiar with. When the doctor was introducing the concept of the occultist to other characters and mentioned the authors he had started reading I gasped in the theater. Eggers really does his homework and his films benefit so much for it!
My wild new years eve plans were to go see this in theaters and no regrets. I loved this so much. Afterwards seeing it reduced to nothing but moustache jokes online makes me roll my eyes for how amazing this film was and the acting.

Rubbing salt on the legs prevents them from being reattached, also transfers the curse to one.
I`ve just seen it today in the cinema and it was fantastic! The visuals were so satisfying, when Thomas is standing in the middle of the road waiting for the carriage...masterpiece. Not to mention the costumes, all the little details, simply amazing. I need to watch it again!!

I just saw this film not twelve hours ago and I am obsessed. I love Dracula stories and films. Van Helsing, Dracula Untold, Dracula 2000 (because who doesn't like a Dracula played by Gerard Butler???), and now Nosferatu. For film, it's one thing to have the characters go through events and trials, but what really sold it was the cinematography and sound design, it just elevated everything and made the film so much more visceral. I watched VVitch when it came out and I read that this was supposed to be Egger's second film and personally, I think he was right in waiting to bring out two more movies before doing this. His filmmaking evolution has done himself and this movie so well. I hope and pray this movie wins it's Oscar nominations because they are so well deserved.
