Flanagan is definitely the superior master. James is great in his own right, but he plays it very safe. His stuff is primarily Halloween house horror - lots of weird looking characters and traditional scares. It's good, but very familiar. Flanagan backs up his horror with genuinely great stories and themes, so you can come back and still get something out of it beyond the horror, and that's the mark of a master in my opinion. Midnight Mass and Hill House are works of art, even outside the genre.
I love Hush and Doctor Sleep but I'm sticking with James Wan here. Even with his non-horror stuff like Death Sentence, like there's so many horror things about that movie that it's almost a horror film. The guy is a master of horror even outside horror. Not only that but Saw is my favorite film of all time
out of all the movies you mentioned I have seen doctor sleep. my favorite part of that movie to be honest was the ending. it brought you back to the shining. the music.
I haven't seen many of his films but if you like fun cheesy action definitely check out Fast 7. Using Pauls brother for some scenes he hadn't been able to film was a great idea and while it's not my favourite it's in 3rd place as Fast X & Fast 5 beat it. Great video, saw you on Ken & Ashleys channel 😊👍🐾💜👋
Between those two I’d definetely say Flanagan mainly because of doctor sleep, that movie was a masterpiece. Overall tho my favorite is probably Robert Eggers
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn Nah. Those two films (or The VVitch, The Lighthouse and The Northman by Robert Eggers, or The Blackcoat's Daughter and Longlegs by Oz Perkins) outstrip anything Flanagan, or especially James Wan, has done hand over fist. Granted, I haven't seen Midnight Mass, but I've found most of what I HAVE seen from Flanagan to be solid at best, nothing that's gonna go on a list of the all-time greats. My favorite from him is actually Oculus, which ironically seems to be the film his stans love least. Wan I just -- totally don't get. Conjuring I and II are fine, Malignant was okay. Maybe in terms of cultural impact (for spawning the ConjurVerse and re-igniting the recent paranormal renaissance), but I find the quality of his films to be somewhere between solid and middling.
@TonyB2279 You can’t say that until you’ve seen Midnight Mass, which most regard as the best thing Flanagan has ever done. Hereditary was great, Midsommar was not. Hes got a ways to go in my opinion, but, that’s just me
Mike Flanagan, James Wan, Jordan Peele, Robert Eggers are my favorite modern horror directors. I have to choose Wan in this argument as I’m a huge fan of Saw, Conjuring, Malignant & Insidious. Flanagan got really great films (for tv I only seen Hill House) too but I’m going with Wan!
I've never been a big fan of the Conjuring films. Well shot, but imo recycled horror and the biggest sin is they made cult icons out of the Warren's, two people who are legitimate pieces of shit in real life. Flannagan I think is the master of the Netflix series horror, and Oculus and Doctor Sleep and HUSH are rock solid. Then again I loved Malignant. So I'm going to have to call a tie. I do weep knowing Flannagan turned down doing a new Halloween movie before DGG and Blumhouse got ahold of it.
I gravitate more towards James Wan. Flanagan just doesn’t do it for me. Doctor Sleep was great but outside of that he’s never a director I look at as one of the greats. James Wan delivers a ton of bangers. And of course he birthed SAW. SAW is the only horror franchise that does it for me. I love everything about it. Just that alone puts James Wan on top for me cuz SAW is the franchise I like the absolute most out of all other franchises. Also not horror related but Furious 7 Wan handled that situation insanely well. That movie is I think top 5 of most successful movies of all time. He landed that plane so well and I love the ending of that film a lot. But even Death Sentence I adore that film as well. James Wan is more my style and speed. To me it’s not even a contest nothing against Flanagan but I just think James Wan is far more superior. That’s just my opinion of course.
@@JohnKramerRules Totally respect your opinion! If you haven’t yet, check out Midnight Mass. I maintain it is the greatest thing Flanagan has ever done
Neither! Definitely not Flanagan. I can't see myself looking back on pretty much anything Wan or Flanagan have made with much reverence.I would lean more towards Ari Aster being the current Master of Horror because he actually makes art.
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn all 3 are horror. I can't even name 3 things wan or Flanagan have made that are even worthy of the recognition. Aster is 3 for 3 and you're comparing two filmmakers with extremely spotty resumes. I still pick Aster.
I agree with Flanagan, he has a bigger back of tricks with scares and has more interesting stories and characters

Flanagan 💯 Dr Sleep, Haunting, Midnight Mass & Fall of The house of Usher all superb. Hush & Geralds Game were excellent also.

James Wan for me mainly because I’ve seen one Mike Flanagan film, Hush. All of James Wan horror films I either enjoy or love
