For a while I have been meaning to set up a 'change my mind' table on veganism. With COVID meaning I can't do this at the moment, I realised I could try the same concept on Omegle, with surprisingly good results!
For those who don't know, Omegle is a website that connects you with a random stranger from around the world via webcam.

Focus on the future of humanity, the efficiency of producing food and the limits of resources. Tell them if humanity doesn't switch off of meat, billions will die due to shortages of water, food and the massive impending overpopulation. Imo you focusing on the morality of killing animals is not the best way to convince people. They'll just think you're preachy. If you are gonna focus on morality, show them the literal video of chicks getting gassed and shredded, and the pigs getting brutalized, that'll have more impact than you "preaching" :3

I don’t agree, I think its a bad analogy. Its like saying buying a stolen iphone is analogous to paying someone to steal an iphone from someone just to see someone get mugged. Not justifying the actions but they are not analogous to each other and could be pointed out as a fallacious argument.

To be fair, I didn't even think of that until after I went vegan and heard it on a couple of vegan youtube channels. It's just something that makes sense in your head until you hear the truth and then you think "Oh fuck, yeah I guess that was stupid to believe"
The only pushback I get when I bring that up is "Well we can't eat what the livestock are eating, it's not food grade for humans" and the best response I can come up with is that we can just grow different crops on the same land

@@trevawho I'm just saying that the argument presupposes that all senses are equivalent and have the same value. But there is little value to draw from hearing an animal scream other than subjective pleasure - which many would regard as immoral - compared to the value drawn from ingesting the creature, which is nutrition, an objective biological need regardless of whether the consumption of animals is necessary or not.
Though looking at it in the context used in the video I suppose it makes sense as an argument for consuming meat solely because of taste. But to get to use this argument you need to be talking to a person who agrees that animal suffering is bad, but that still places more value over their own experience of taste than over the animal's life.
@@RageNukes exactly that, but its not a discussion on the value of senses, its the morality of eating meat. To which, argument that is unnecessary, is pretty much uncontested at this point, besides a few stories I have heard about biological conditions where they have to eat meat, but I don't know how true they are. I was attempting to go vegan the past week, after my birthday, but first trip to the shop and I'm looking at my basket with still nearly 90% of items containing animal products (milk, eggs, fat etc)
this is actually so helpful for every day discussions
He's asking questions to force them to think instead of just asserting arguments. I already knew this tactic was powerful but it is something else when someone as skilled as Alex does it

Chickens are bred to lay far more eggs than is healthy for them. The only ethical way to have backyard chickens is to give them a shot that stops them from produce eggs. You can also just let them eat the eggs to gain back the nutrients but there still is a lot of other health issues. You can watch Earthing Ed’s video “Why don’t vegans eat backyard eggs?”

I’ve spent a ton of time and energy trying to defend my position for meat eating but i feel like i’ve failed and at some point my views just become inconsistent with my morals. I’ve accepted that eating animals is wrong. I haven’t given up on it yet but i hope to do it soon.

If you're anything like me, you won't regret it. I felt a huge weight off my shoulders. Going vegetarian is a fantastic step, and if you can manage the full vegan plunge it's the single biggest thing you can do as an individual to reduce your negative impact on the planet. Whatever you do, good job looking into the arguments for and against, and good luck!

Yeah there's actually peer-reviewed research indicating that vegans experience more discrimination than do LGBTQ+ and many other groups. I believe there was a study titled "It Aint Easy Eating Greens" that indicated that the only group marked lower than the vegan groups was drug addicts ;b

@@archockencanto1645 it's not a matter of stupidity, it's cognitive bias that's built because our big brains take a lot of energy to function and evolution has given us shortcuts that can sometimes kinda suck actually. Eating meat is very much the default. It doesn't make someone stupid for not fully thinking through the implications of everything society has taught them before being specifically confronted with it.
Plants are alive too. There's no way to prove they don't suffer. Plus some plants are STILL ALIVE on the plate! Way worse than eating animals. I'll stick to free range meats 😀

I thought becoming vegan would be a lot harder than it was, I think this is what holds back a lot of people
Sameeeee! Because there are so many things you can't eat but then I tried it because of Alex and it was laughingly easy (I live in a big town)
If restaurants and supermarkets had a lot of vegan options then many people would change pretty quickly. Doing your best to stay vegan can mess with your mental health because it brings a lot of stress for being so difficult. If it wasn’t so hard, people wouldn’t be so hard to convince.
It really depends where you are and your circumstances. As a broke student in a pretty shit area, my options aren't exactly brimming so I'm essentially a vegetarian/pescatarian mix but I'll absolutely grab vegan options when I can.
I'm not particularly convinced that the suffering of fish is substantial enough for me to stave off of them but without options like fish, milk, eggs, I legitimately just wouldn't eat on some days. I've tried milk replacements and I find all of them legitimately disgusting. If I come across a decent option then I'll make that change but so far, there's nothing really. Coconut milk was the most palatable so far but eh, I don't think I can stomach that all of the time.

There is a rebuttal to the comparison of senses, it's a bit obvious if you think about it.
Each sense exists to convey information. The tortured screams of an animal will convey information that pain is being experienced by an animal. Their cooked flesh when perceived by our nose and tongue will only convey taste flavour information.
Going purely by the data conveyed by each sense we have on one hand knowledge that something is experiencing pain, on the other we have information about taste and flavour.
Deciphering this information from the signals sent by the senses is a primal part of our brains, as is the response. We are hard wired to respond negatively to screaming and positively to deliciousness.
Kinda nitpicky because his message is clear enough regardless. Still, a possible response :D

@@alekz112 Although this argument convince a lot of people, it does not make sense. If a person like the taste of an animal, they pay to experience pleasure, not for the animal to suffer. The comparison with sound is misguided because the person would be directly paying for suffering and pain of the screaming animal.

I am 60 years old. Meat eater my whole life. For ethical and environmental reasons became vegetarian 15 months ago. Haven’t quite made it to vegan yet but very rarely do I have food which contains egg or cheese so I am 90% there.
What I find striking is the response people have to veganism in general and vegans in particular. In my experience it is mainly mocking but for some it is outright hostility. When I asked an acquaintance why he was so hostile towards vegans he said it was because they acted superior and lectured. When I asked how many vegans he had spoken with it was immediately apparent that it was zero.

It's difficult for people to hear (directly or indirectly) that their actions have awful consequences. When someone says they are vegan for ethical reasons, it reminds people that eating animals is wrong. That hurts. It challenges our preconceived notions about the world and ourselves. The vast majority of people are against animal abuse. The thing is, eating meat is absolutely normalised. Challenging that normalisation creates backlash! It's not difficult to imagine a world where another abhorrent or unethical act is normalised for the sake of financial, personal or preferential gain.
This was so entertaining, please do more of these! I realised you remind me of the main character in 'The good doctor' like looks-wise. And smarts too actually.
What a great idea! Unless there's some cost I haven't realized, this seems like a relatively easy video to produce as well, so that's a bonus for Alex. I'd love to see more!
