I've experienced this situation personally when I was in the military, you stand still for many hours under the sun waiting for a guy to walk without any regard for you. The sun plus the fact that you're not moving make your blood flowing less efficiently and then you faint. And I absolutely hate when a poor president, who is just a guy the people choose, look down on you as if you did something wrong, they've never been a soldier and never hold a weapon...

its very common for soldiers to collapse after standing in place for so long. i once heard its from locking your knees in a standing position is what limits bloodflow, but hell if i know

Soldier fails?? He did an outstanding job! If you've ever fainted, you'll know what this feels like. The soldier was nearly unconscious and unable to see when the guy walked by him. He refused to go down, and instead kept searching for the rifle with his hand so he could get back up. That takes a lot of strength!

All these people making jokes about the kid have never been in the military and don't understand what standing at attention, wearing a hot uniform on a hot summer day in the blazing sun can do to you. His head was swimming and his vision was a fuzzy white-out. He did an awesome job fighting it and trying to remain conscious and in formation.

Obama was the president of the USA, which means he was (is) the best American person, who is an idol to any American people; he's a legend IMO, although I'm not from the USA. :D He was always a very nice person, a true gentleman and was always interested in his guarding marines' health. No, it's due to the stance of attention they are forced to take, it causes circulatory issues and makes people faint often, happens in armies all around the world.
I was in the army 2 years and we had to do the same thing, stay in the sun without move per hours and it was usual to see people falling down.

If you stand straight long enough and you focus very hard, the blood flow to your brain can cause you to faint, it happens at places like churches aswell.
As a former US Marine, I know what this soldier experienced. Often on appearances wearing "Dress Blues" or "Dress Blue Whites" my fellow marines would pass out too. Our platoon sergeant would allows remind us to eat breakfast and drink plenty of water, but sometimes it still happened. It happened to me once. It also has a lot to do with not bending your knees enough while standing for a long period of time. Often times I would have to stand still for 12 hours straight! It's tough to do. I feel for this soldier. I know exactly what he went through (former US Marine).

and yeah you're right, standing too long without moving leg muscle could cause hypotension.
Don't know why this is recommended rn but I never had this problem when I served. I know it's about the knees locking and blood flow but uh I just wiggle my toes and make sure my knees are slightly bent. Standing in place is a ban but not the hardest thing
I saw this happen to multiple people when going through basic training. Standing at attention even for as short as 10 to 15 minutes can cause you to faint depending on your health, and hydration. It can literally happen to anyone. So much factors into it besides just your health. Were you sick recently, are you getting sick, have you eaten, is your blood sugar a bit low, how did you sleep the night before, have you drank enough water, you don't want to be overly hydrated either last thing you want is to really need to pee...
The fact that he tried to get his gun and stand back up is just so heartwarming.. like eventhough that man was fainting he still struggled to get back up

It has nothing do do with a faint heart, but just with the fact that if you don't move a muscle for hours on end the blood pressure starts lowering, bloods starts flowing slower and eventually not enough is pumped up to the brain and this happens. What a legend for still maintaining control!

I was in the army and have seen many people drop like a sack of potatoes after saluting for hours, without being able to control any of it. This man showed great control given the circumstances. It was to preserve the soldiers dignity. Like it or not, if he required the help of the president, it would have reflected badly on the armed forces and the soldier himself, pretending that nothing happened allows for the soldier to preserve some face value while some one else later ran in to assist him the moment the president passed.

I witnessed this many times when I was in the military. You stand there for hours before and during the ceremony. It takes a lot of discipline. I can admire him because I know what it takes. He didn't fail. Even after he fainted he kept grabbing his rifle.
Then , that makes me not a good fit for a military career . A simple marching training for two hours in hot day already made me almost faint .

I was taught when you feel faint from being on the parade square for hours you are to go down on one knee before you actually faint. It's nothing to be ashamed of, it can happen to the best of us.

It is not uncommon for soldiers to faint in such circumstances. I was Navy and I never fainted on parade but I don’t think less of those that did. Sometimes the collar and tie is a little tight, sometimes it’s just the stress.

I remember I fainted during a ceremony but I didn't fall and fainted while standing, just using my rifle to support my weight, locking my arms.. When I woke up, the ceremony is almost over.
I know that soldiers pain and can sympathize.
Had it happen to me once during a long duration change of command ceremony. It was very hot out and I was feeling ill from allergies. My vision went dark and I fainted.
