Very thorough and clean instructions. Like the fact that you guys used commonly used tools by regular people instead of special tools of which not everyone has. Thanks
Thank you very much I try to use common tools whenever I can and my videos I will often describe why having a different tool may make the procedure easier . but I do it as much as possible. Have a great day I hope I can help you in the future
Thank you for the torque specs and the explanation on the balance gear. You are the only one I found that went into such good detail. I'm subscribing to your channel for future reference.
Well we’re very happy to have you a lot of times if I don’t give you torque specifications it’s because I don’t wanna argue with people over comments they act like I just made them up….. I will however say that my channel is based around not only how but why stuff works or breaks. And that has more value than most people put into it most of the time they just wanna see how it’s done but never think about how it works so they can pick something in the future that maybe is completely unrelated…. Anyways extremely happy to have you James welcome to the Channell God bless and have a great day
Not a long video....all the info and detail needed to do the job right!!! Also, cool to show the manual with real specs and torque settings....I’m sure that book wasn’t free.....thanks for sharing!

Great info on the tensioners banging due to weakness internally. Ever had one jump time because of this issue. Have one that makes cold raping ticking noise and takes a wile to go away ,but in complete warm up totally goes away silent engine ,but here in Michigan in winter it takes a wile to get there .Believe engine had motor honey in it purchased in the summer so the noise was not there until I changed the oil and put the recommended 5 w 30 in it and changed the pcv valve ,cleaned throttle body with carb cleaner along with getting the oil pooling in the intake .No oil burn in 500 miles now and no smoke just this higher pitched clatter not as high pitched as a lifter ,but not as low as a rod knock. Thinking these tensioners or a wrist pin sound as a guess.Goes totally silent on full warm up like new engine. But cold different story. The jeep has over 200k on it and no check engine light on or oil light on ever.Have a suggestion you could offer to try before tearing into it would be appreciated.
Yes I have had them jump time but it takes a while, I also am in Michigan, I also have video showing you how to change them without taking the timing off. And where I show you to put the non-ported tensioners in it from the 2002 to 2004 3.7 or 4.7 you won’t ever have that problem again with them. By the way it’s not necessary to be as fancy as I was in my video about showing you how to change them without removing the timing making a tool blah blah blah just make sure you have somebody that will sit there and hold the tensioner while you switch it out. Although my video I was by myself so I wanted to make sure it didn’t fall down so I made the video showing you how to do it by yourself and make the proper tools to be able to do it and be 100% for sure it won’t fall Anyways very nice to have you welcome to the Channell God bless and have a great day
Thanks Steve we’re trying to make our videos a little bit better than we did in the passed but this is still very good content and very helpful so we’re happy to see that people are still watching it. God bless and welcome to the channel
Great video very informative. I've set many small block chevies but all the extra steps with a jeep is a bit frustrating. Mystery is gone thanx to guy. Highly recommend you.
Super helpful man. I’ve gotta do the chain on my 04 3.7 Dakota. Hopefully can get it done in one weekend as I need my truck back😂 watching this makes me feel so much better
Hi Clay. Greatly explained. We've changed both tensioners because the chains were good, but now the ralenti is to high, it is 1.500 rpm. What did we do wrong ?
My guess would be that you have something leaking like a vacuum hose or the intake gasket Take a can of brake cleaner or carb cleaner and spray it around the engine, and when you spray it in an area in the idle gets even higher That will show you where your leak is at
Good video. To the point. Nice. What did it sound like before? I have a Ram 1500 with this engine. It blew out freeze plugs at the rear and overheated. Makes a Tick now that goes away under acceleration. Water and oil both stay where they are supposed to. I checked hydraulic valve lifters and exhaust gaskets changed but still a tick. I have not seen a video where the timing chain and tensioners solved the tick. No codes on engine and still has power. Runs good.
Hey Stacy. Well I’ll be honest with you last year I put timing chains and head gaskets in my Dodge Dakota that has a 4.7 in it . And the tick was still there just like you’re describing. Mine runs absolutely fine with no check engine lights just like yours. Although the engine seems like it’s not as powerful as it should be. And if I had to bet mine has bad lifters. I’ve never heard yours but from what you’re describing it sounds like the same problem. As long as you’re certain that is not a connecting rod noise I know for sure that mine is not a connecting rod because I took them out of it and checked everything the only thing I never replaced was the lifters here in a couple weeks I’m going to take it apart when I have time and replace the lifters and I’m sure that will solve my problem and more than likely yours
I'm about to be taking the passenger side head off. Glad I ran across this video cause I already don't like timing but this made me feel a little more comfortable doing it. Would you recommend getting new timing set and guides?
You can replace the guides sometimes I do sometimes I don’t I just look at them and if they appear to be really really worn in I replace them but there’s always going to be wear around them. And if it’s not too deep don’t worry about it
Man, thank you so much for writing that. Sorry about getting back to you late. I just have to look at these comments when I have time there’s awful lot of them.
The guides are pretty self-explanatory I’m sorry I do not and that’s because they just come on and go off there they are very simple. And I appreciate you for writing me a message and thanking For posting it I try to help people as much as I can
Thanks Guys I must say a job well done. I think we can manage this build here in BC Canada. By the way I think Jeff needs a cold beer after that all that chain positioning.
Hey guys. I am plannnig to replace the timing chain for my Jeep liberty KJ 3.7, but I I am not sure what brand to choose. Mopar is too expensive. Could you reccomend anything else cheaper but of relatively high quality?
No you just hold the cam with a pair of vise grips and loosen the bolts you hold the cam in a place that does not contact metal close to the first journal just like we hold it when we put the chain on
Hi Tim I think this is what you’re looking for but if it’s not just look underneath my jeep playlist on my channel and I’m certain that you will find exactly what you’re looking for ua-cam.com/video/ZsWMYF00-cw/v-deo.html
Great video! This repair is above my pay grade! I’ve got a faulty tensioner making the “tapping” sound. I don’t have the money for this extensive repair right now, how long can I let it go before catastrophic failure? How much should it cost just to have the tensioners replaced? Thanks. To be honest with you I wished I had better news but you better get that fixed right away. If it breaks it will cost you a lot more to fix I’m sorry if you were close by me I can do it relatively cheaply for you I charge 1450 for everything parts and labor but I think most shops probably charge a lot more thank you for the kind words to you I appreciate them and it’s always nice to hear someone say something nice to you
Clay Rogers thanks, Clay. I wish I lived closer too. It’s not only the money, but trusting who I pay to do it right and use the right Mopar parts. I’m gonna have to live on a prayer for a bit. The noise stops when the engine warms and at higher speeds, but I know it’s the tensioner. Thanks for the reply, Clay!
Trust me it makes a lot of sense to remove both sides and put them together at the same time so they are installed properly you can do what you like but it is an interference motor meaning that if it’s not right it will bend valves. If you think you can tackle one side I’m certain you can tackle both sides the zip tie method really really helps
Great video, how did u guys loosen the cam sprocket bolt? Ive tried using vice grips & a breaker bar but ive had zero luck. Cylinder 2 has no compression so im trying to take the head off & find the cause of this issue
@@levialston518 yea and also fixed it myself lol turns out a piece of metal got into the combustion chamber in cylinder 2 which caused the piston to crack after it tapped the head. Luckily i had no valve damage, just had to slightly hone the cylinder wall, smooth out the bottom of the head from the harsh indentations from the small metal piece and replace the piston/rings/rod bearings & head gasket. I would insert a pic if i could lol jeep runs great, in total ive spend about 400 in only part’s compared to my “mechanic telling me to junk it after not wanting to do the work.
hi. im working on the same engine. my question is after taking the heads off and having them machined and ready to install, do i need to align the camshaft in a certain way to get it to TDC or will rotating the cam until the sprocket fits will suffice? im worried about interference.
Yes , they need to be near the correct position not dead on well you want to make sure your engine is a top dead center and then when you go to bolt your cams down , you want to make sure they are near the position they’re supposed to be. Just unbolt the cams before you install the cylinder heads and do not turn the cams very much once you bolt them down
i got a question boss i put my jeep liberty 3.7 on time using your method just for a precaution i manually turned the engine over the marks on the spokets line up but the ones on my chains dont is that a issue or how many turns before they line up i turned it 3 times
I don’t know how many revolutions it would take before they would lineup again but I would imagine it’s quite a few. You should be OK but just so you know you can put your intake back on and your valve covers and run the engine without the front cover on. All you need is spark compression and fuel. If you hook up all things that make them things up you can start up and make sure that is correct. Hopefully that’s helpful. If you did everything right and everything was lined up Before you turn the engine you will be OK and I understand why you did that but on these engines there’s too many marks to make them all lined up again
hey boss i ran into another problem i put everything back but now it cranks and it sputters like it wants to turn on but doesn't any ideas of what it can be? can it be that its not on time or something else im a try my coils tomorrow and some starting fluid im replacing my battery i guess it went bad
Question. I followed your vidio and Hines manual to a tee yet when I turn the engine over the 2 turns the manual says to verify timing it doesn't line up with the marks on the chain. It comes up to tdc but the dark links do not come in.
It does not say to make sure that they’re still lined up I don’t think because you would have to turn it like 100 times for them to line up again so don’t worry about it. You can start the vehicle without the timing cover on and make sure it’s in time. But if you did it right you don’t have to worry about it. And if you follow the procedure I’m fairly certain that you probably didn’t do it correctly anyways just from the verbiage you use
The name of the book that I use is called autodata Mine is several years old but I think they’re still available online it is a very complete guide and I found a couple things that were wrong in it but not many
Friend had his timing set change on his dak 3.7, it was done by a friend he said did Mechanic works. After he installed the setup and it running the truck run rough and bog on hard acceleration. I think it not time right or the tone gear.is not right for the truck. It a 2004.. i heard the 4.7 had a 26 teeth tone gear or a 32 is it the same on the 3.7???
Hey so when doing this, I got all my chains on everything in the correct postion but when i tightened the last cam sprocket it roated everything to 1 o clock. Is there anyway i can move that back?
Thanks for the kind words Daniel the book is called aldata i’m pretty certain they’re out of print. www.themotorbookstore.com/timing-chain-gears-serpentine-belts-manual-dometic-import-vehicles-autodata.html
No .. no I don’t know how many times you would actually have to rotate that engine to get the timing marks to line up again, but from my experience, it never happens
Because the chains won’t be lined up if they don’t fit into the window. Technically speaking, it doesn’t really matter, but if you don’t do it, then more than likely it’s not lined up correctly . It will not run correctly if they are not lined up correctly all of them and you will bend valves
How do you set the engine to the exhaust stroke on number 1 cylinder? The Jeep I am working on the black links don’t line up but the Jeep ran. They are like off by 5 links
Did you take the timing chains off without the engine being set at top dead center? If so you will need to lift up the The cams so you were able to move the engine without the pistons hitting the valves. Then you will set the engine at Top Dead Center, #1 piston tdc. Then you can reinstall the cams and your timing will sit properly and your chain marks will be in the right positions. This is crucial if your timing chain came off while the engine was running he will need to remove the heads because you definitely will have one or two valves bent. And you’ll be redoing the work anyway. If your cams are set correctly and your engine is at top dead center correctly the timing chain marks will lineup if they do not there is definitely something wrong even in the Chinese sets they always lineup or extremely close. Honestly I don’t remember exactly the procedure off the top of my head I do quite a few of them but I do so many things in between I don’t think my brain hard drive space is Big enough to hold all the stuff I used to know that I don’t know anymore. Hope the little bit of information that I gave you is helpful I wish you the best with that Joe have a great day
Hello..am doing the timing chain in my jeep cherokee 3.7l 2010 and i forgot the firing order..my jeeo has only 3 coils in the driver side and in the passenger side just 3 cables coming from the 3 coils of the driver side.can you help me with the firing order?
Thank you so much..i had a big problem..after i put everything together in my jeep and i stared the engine.something happen and my jeep caught on fire and is not good anymore..😔😔😔😥😥😢😢😭😭
That is not a good story at all…. Then mine caught on fire though as well, but it was because the engine rebuilder did not rebuild the engine correctly and shot a rod outside the motor 5000 miles after it was brand new burnt to the ground.
I am currently about to tackle a head gasket job on an 08 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Is there any videos you know of on what I am going to need to just do the gaskets without doing new timing chains etc.? I am getting new bolts and having the heads checked by a machine shop.
Hey im planning on doing my head gaskets soon for my 08 GC. Did you have success? Was it the 3.7? Maybe a few helpful tips? Anything appreciated, thanks.
I’m not quite certain what you’re asking me but if I was doing that job I would rebuild the heads if they are not cracked it is not necessary to buy new ones and kind of a waste of money and of course I would do the complete timing chain if I’m taking it apart you really do not save any money by just doing one side hope that’s helpful have a happy Thanksgiving
@@sharpcarco when I put my chain on (passenger side) If the chain is tight on top side you can move a couple links by making it tight on the bottom instead. How are you suppose to get it on right then?
Well I have a question. The are two chain gliders. One says left side and one says right side. I'd say the left is for the drivers side and right is for passengers side?? One is a bit longer than the other. The one goes top right and the other one goes bottom left ?? Please answer. Thanks
Anything on an automobile that refers to right and left means when you’re sitting in the vehicle facing forward that is the right and then there is the left so the passenger side of the vehicle is considered the right and the driver side is considered the left hopefully that answer helps you
Also just pay attention when you take them off and I’m certain if you Google it you can find a still picture of the timing guides showing how they are exactly placed on the engine
@@sharpcarco hey thanks!! I've got it done. Started up ran really good but I've got a block problem. I think its cracked in the cooling jacket on cylinder 4 I'm upset that you just can't see down in the block enough to tell. I also think an these engines have rust problems inside.
The Clay Way what is the brand name of the timing kit you installed? For engine and timing parts what purchasing source do you recommend? I have similar problem. Engine has very loud slap when running. I plan on pulling entire engine and rebuild to be safe. Appreciate this video VERY helpful.
How'd you diagnose it needed a chain. I got a jeep underpowered reaks like gas, misfires on all cylinders, pulled both valve covers, slack in passenger side timing chain
A Chiltons manual would be very helpful for you but we were just trying to show you some of the tips and techniques that we used to do them in our shop I hope it helps you out in the long run and wish you a great day
Clay Rogers I have two codes po175. And po172 it runs if I feed lot of gas take foot off it stalls right away put in gear it will not idal do you think it could be thottle body it's electric or timing chain this is for a 2007 Jeep Liberty with 3.7
Hey man I got the 4.7 high output Powertech motor on a 2001 Dodge Durango I'm the original owner what time counts on the anything anything happens that motor should I replace the whole motor or fix the heads
Hey Raul I guess if you have 200,000 miles on it or something you maybe want to consider having it rebuilt or you could do the rebuild yourself and it would probably only cost you about five or $600. Most of the time I just do what is broken in Engines because they really don’t have lower end problems so that’s kind of a difficult question to answer it depends If you have money to do a full rebuild I would recommend that but if you’re on a budget and you cannot do the work yourself just do what needs to be done repair the heads and replace the valves timing chain components make sure you use good timing chain components hopefully that answers your question have a great weekend
Well I can tell you from experience that I’m fairly certain that they are but I highly recommend you look them up for yourself. You should be able to Google that information

Excelente trabajo hermano.
Hi Clay. Greatly explained. We've changed both tensioners because the chains were good, but now the ralenti is to high, it is 1.500 rpm. What did we do wrong ?
My guess would be that you have something leaking like a vacuum hose or the intake gasket
Take a can of brake cleaner or carb cleaner and spray it around the engine, and when you spray it in an area in the idle gets even higher
That will show you where your leak is at

Great video, how did u guys loosen the cam sprocket bolt? Ive tried using vice grips & a breaker bar but ive had zero luck. Cylinder 2 has no compression so im trying to take the head off & find the cause of this issue
You might have found the problem by now but the rocker arms have a tendency to fall off what happened here exhaust valve stuck open probably bent
@sunnyjohnson3929 I'm thinking about taking the heads off and replacing the valve but with 320k miles is the cost worth it
What stroke does the engine have to be on at TDC when installing the timing chains with the head sprockets?
Compression
@@sharpcarco , thank you, but which cylinder should be in compression stroke?
Number 1
Sorry Paul I did not see this, I greatly apologize for not answering
Good job guys, great , help out with a problem I was having.keep up the good work thanks be safe ...😎.
Did you put timing gears after or before you install the change sus? I don’t see that part!,,,!
Either way but I recommend putting the gears on before you put the chains on and you cut the zip ties one at a time doing the back chain first
@@sharpcarco thank you
Won't the links change when u get correct tension though
Did u bought originals or aftermarket parts?
Cheap Aftermarket except for the two upper tensioners’s, they are cloye’s
Wonderful job on the video!!!
If I change the passenger cylinder (right) do I need to change the timing chain
You don’t have to change the timing chain but you will definitely have to take it off so I would recommend doing it but no you do not have to
Thank you ur very good help God bless you
Very helpful but I need you guys to help me do my Jeep liberty
If it's not straight up and down on the cam, how do u realign them? Do I have to pull the lifters in the Rockers back out to realign it?
hi. im working on the same engine. my question is after taking the heads off and having them machined and ready to install, do i need to align the camshaft in a certain way to get it to TDC or will rotating the cam until the sprocket fits will suffice? im worried about interference.
Yes , they need to be near the correct position not dead on
well you want to make sure your engine is a top dead center and then when you go to bolt your cams down , you want to make sure they are near the position they’re supposed to be.
Just unbolt the cams before you install the cylinder heads and do not turn the cams very much once you bolt them down
@@sharpcarco much appreciated!
i got a question boss i put my jeep liberty 3.7 on time using your method just for a precaution i manually turned the engine over the marks on the spokets line up but the ones on my chains dont is that a issue or how many turns before they line up i turned it 3 times
If you did everything right and everything was lined up Before you turn the engine you will be OK and I understand why you did that but on these engines there’s too many marks to make them all lined up again
thank you i appreciate it ill go ahead and do it thanks for the help
hey boss i ran into another problem i put everything back but now it cranks and it sputters like it wants to turn on but doesn't any ideas of what it can be? can it be that its not on time or something else im a try my coils tomorrow and some starting fluid im replacing my battery i guess it went bad
Great video !!where can I find a book like yours ?
The name of the book that I use is called autodata Mine is several years old but I think they’re still available online it is a very complete guide and I found a couple things that were wrong in it but not many
Friend had his timing set change on his dak 3.7, it was done by a friend he said did Mechanic works. After he installed the setup and it running the truck run rough and bog on hard acceleration. I think it not time right or the tone gear.is not right for the truck. It a 2004.. i heard the 4.7 had a 26 teeth tone gear or a 32 is it the same on the 3.7???
Unplug the cam sensor on the passenger side head at the front
Hey so when doing this, I got all my chains on everything in the correct postion but when i tightened the last cam sprocket it roated everything to 1 o clock. Is there anyway i can move that back?
How much would you charge to do 2001 4.7 jeep Cherokee
About 1000
👍💪🖐️
Great video! What book is that?
Thanks for the kind words Daniel the book is called aldata i’m pretty certain they’re out of print.
www.themotorbookstore.com/timing-chain-gears-serpentine-belts-manual-dometic-import-vehicles-autodata.html
Did you and Jeff rotate the engine after the video?
No .. no I don’t know how many times you would actually have to rotate that engine to get the timing marks to line up again, but from my experience, it never happens
Will this video help me on my dodge dakota 3.9 ?
Not really but that’s a much simpler engine than this one so you’re kind of lucky in that respect
Question? When you line up all the timing marks. Why does it matter to have the dark color chain links in the windows and on the timing marks
Because the chains won’t be lined up if they don’t fit into the window.
Technically speaking, it doesn’t really matter, but if you don’t do it, then more than likely it’s not lined up correctly . It will not run correctly if they are not lined up correctly all of them and you will bend valves
Thank you 👍.
Hope the little bit of information that I gave you is helpful I wish you the best with that Joe have a great day
@@sharpcarco very helpful reply to the Q. I'm rebuilding a 02 4.7 Thanks for sharing your knowledge & info. Great videos👍
Thanks brother good video and god bless
Hello..am doing the timing chain in my jeep cherokee 3.7l 2010 and i forgot the firing order..my jeeo has only 3 coils in the driver side and in the passenger side just 3 cables coming from the 3 coils of the driver side.can you help me with the firing order?
images.app.goo.gl/PxKnPuiNutBmpG9JA
Thank you so much..i had a big problem..after i put everything together in my jeep and i stared the engine.something happen and my jeep caught on fire and is not good anymore..😔😔😔😥😥😢😢😭😭
That is not a good story at all…. Then mine caught on fire though as well, but it was because the engine rebuilder did not rebuild the engine correctly and shot a rod outside the motor 5000 miles after it was brand new burnt to the ground.
Do you have a pdf of the timing drawings?
No sorry I do not
I am currently about to tackle a head gasket job on an 08 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Do u recommend me doing both sides
I’m not quite certain what you’re asking me but if I was doing that job I would rebuild the heads if they are not cracked it is not necessary to buy new ones and kind of a waste of money and of course I would do the complete timing chain if I’m taking it apart you really do not save any money by just doing one side hope that’s helpful have a happy Thanksgiving
I like the way you motivate. If everyone else can do it you can do it too.
Thank you
I love it when people catch that , thank you so very much
Gracias amigo me gustó mucho Dios te bendiga
will it start if off a tooth on the cam gear
Yes if you unplug the cam sensor that is located on the bottom side of the head that is the head that is on the passenger side it will start and run
Good video
Just yanked drive side valve cover off my mom jeep n one bottom guides is gone n it just slapping
Good job fantastic thanks
Excellent video......(don't bug Jeff about his heavy breathing)...lol
😂😂 lol
Dude you are a blessing from God 🙏 that vid was dad ass. I need your help please man
Nice job,helpfull
Thank you very much welcome to the channel
How'd you diagnose it needed a chain. I got a jeep underpowered reaks like gas, misfires on all cylinders, pulled both valve covers, slack in passenger side timing chain
Compression test
Chilton manual?
Most of the time I just do what is broken in Engines because they really don’t have lower end problems so that’s kind of a difficult question to answer it depends
If you have money to do a full rebuild I would recommend that but if you’re on a budget and you cannot do the work yourself just do what needs to be done repair the heads and replace the valves timing chain components make sure you use good timing chain components hopefully that answers your question have a great weekend
Good videos Thank You Very Much 👍
Is the timing and head torque the same in a 06 jeep commander 3.7l v6
I'm about to change head gaskets in my commander in next few days
Well I can tell you from experience that I’m fairly certain that they are but I highly recommend you look them up for yourself. You should be able to Google that information
Can someone drop the link for the manual?
Good stuff
excellent zip tie trick thats great
One of my favorites. We have Jeff to thank for that that is not my idea.
