I hope you all have a safe, mild forest fire season over there in Australia this year. Damn. I'm in California, and our two areas of the world got fucking wrecked this year.
Just wanna put it out there as I’m sure so many people have. But you guys are the reason why I invested in a mountain bike, you are the reason why I love riding and getting out there. Your content is so well put together and I love the presenters. I feel so comforted watching you guys and you never fail in getting me excited to get back out there. Never stop what you’re doing, you’re the best. Love from Staffordshire
Don’t forget to bring something to wipe off your bike if it’s going inside your car or van at the end of a muddy run 🚲 🚗 Great tips! Don’t forget about your feet 🦶 waterproof shoes or boots that let your ankle bend.
Six layers on top! How grateful I am that I never need more than two or, in extremis, three. That's the advantage of riding in Southern California rather than in the U.K., I guess: little rain, no mud, no snow. (There's something to be said for living in climatological paradise.)
I think theres alot to be said about riding wet surfaces, for about three quarters of our rides. Nothing like wet roots n rocks for buttock clenching fun and to hone your skills. It makes us enjoy and appreciate dry hardpack that bit more too.
Don't have much mud to worry about. Snow and Ice here. Love it, the Magic Mary and Hans Dampf and hold up well on my techy chunky forest rides.. Rocks, roots, snow, ice and some bog. All good. Even better, when it's like this, less cleaning of the bike required, just brush the snow off the drive train and pivots and towel dry the pivots and wipe down suspension and Dropper stantions. Will look to strip down the bike mid winter and give the pivots and bearings some grease love though. Tip for gloves - XC Skiing Gloves work well and daggy tracky dacks for pants with decent room for pads underneath.
Great tips! I do some but will own up to struggling with the motivation. Wake up intent on going out to see grey sky and drizzle really puts me off. Now if only I had some friends to speak to...
Oh maybe I'm weird but I love watching videos of weather like thunderstorms nothing better and more relaxing like that! I sometimes also go and then I listen to music I like like delta parole or metallica while I watch and take it in!
Living in the UK you'd expect most riders will have experience/knowledge of riding in bad/foul weather 😂 Riding in bad weather, wet conditions etc also improves your riding skills 👍
Got 8 miles in tonight on my Trek Marlin 7 around town, 30 degrees here in Minnesota. Try to ride as much as I can until the snow arrives. Love the show, keep up the great vids!
My main issue is the chain - once there's the slightest bit of mud on it, it won't stay on in the front mech - perhaps that's part of the reason everyone uses one-by drivetrains.
I do my workouts on tarmac when the weather gets bad.. if its even worst, then i put the bike on the smart trainer... but riding in the snow is pure fun!!!
For some people, having the right kit & getting the bike nailed can take care of the motivation part all by itself. For me, I'll take some bulkier tools and spare parts/food/clothing with me so I'm confident I can get through any issues easily. At that point, there's literally no excuse I can give myself to stay inside.
Cold or wet is easy, you just add the right layers. But try it on the 40+ °C (105°F) days. you can't strip off more, the sun is brutal, lungs dry and you only brought 2L of water on your 1 hour ride. Then tell us again how to motivate to go for a ride. My secret - summer night rides with all the bugs and spiders.
Didn't hear it being said, but last time I went out in bad weather I had waterproof pants and jacket and gloves. But one thing I didn't think about was my feet which ended uo soaking wet and freezing.
Most bikers do not realize the importance of weather predictions before biking. I for one always check Weather Underground and Tomorrow.io weather apps on my phone before a biking trip.

The gloves hack could be useful, but what about feet? I've had plenty of muddy/wet rides (admittedly just wearing sports running shoes) and my feet get wet/cold, never really looked for a solution for that, but probably proper mountain bike shoes might be a start? :)
I wear shortish waterproof boots, I can step in a half a foot of water or more and stay dry. Mine are older but I’m sure you can find new lightweight ones that fit the bill (let your ankle bend). Hope this helps!
@@Franksey180 yeah that's not good to have wet/cold feet only 30min into your ride. I've ridden in -16C and my feet stay warm this way. If it's only +4C a medium height waterproof shoe might be best. Good luck!
Hi, Did you actually mean that they have to be ‘latex’ medical gloves to retain heat ??? because the gloves in the video look like blue nitrile gloves (which are latex free and can be worn by people with allergies). I think it’s just the extra layer working to provide warmth.. but please correct me if that is not the case.

And If you need to chuck a bike in the car or van to reach a trail; towel(s), a bag for the dirties, Warm dry clothes, flask of tea and a portable jet wash to minimise the amount of trail you take home with you..
It's not fun for me personally to ride in " any condition", some cold like around 29 f , yes no problem, maybe no more than 3 inches of snow on the ground, that's ok too! But riding while it's pouring rain, or in a mud fest, not my thing really.
So many layers! Sure you're not reptiles? Seriously though, I "run hot" / have high tolerance for cold BUT even if not starting a ride with it on - it's stowed for when I stop.

I do my workouts on tarmac when the weather gets bad.. if its even worst, then i put the bike on the smart trainer... but riding in the snow is pure fun!!!
Can take it easier on less grippy tyres, a fairly safe way to learn skills and so be safer all round, as falls usually slow speed and into (soft) mud!
In the low country of S.C. after several days of rain the wooden bridges are EXTREMELY slick during braking and even acceleration.
