I do enjoy the TK Friday videos a lot and like most weeks, last weeks was easy to follow. However, I felt that some of this weeks video was too rushed and could have benefitted from slowing down a bit and explaining more of what you were doing. An extra 5 or 6 minutes could have made the operations you were doing easier to understand and I've watched the video 4 times now so maybe experimentation and practice is needed on my part along with another couple of viewings before it all clicks. As always, very informative and helpful. Thanks!

I think the center panel is too cluttered. I like how the old legacy blend if works. Tony does a good job of reconfiguring and simplifying the panel. Hopefully he will look at this one again. He simplified the mask calculator. I am sure he can do it here as well.

Dave, a very useful video. May I add a couple of points that some may find useful
- the overlay mask view combines Blend If settings and layer mask, so if you enable this when brushing out an effect such as the sky highlights in your video then you can see where the brushing is needed
- if you have combined target/exclude and luminosity Blend If settings on same layer then ctrl/command-click on the red disable mask cross in Cx/Combo will turn them both on and off together, saves having to turn both target/exclude and grey on and off together
- one way to try and get your head around target/exclude that helped me during the beta testing was to get a colour wheel image and then put a black solid fill layer on top. You can then play with the target/exclude settings including the slider to see which colour gets impacted. I found getting the concept clear made it easier to experiment on actual images

Hi Dave. I'm just getting into colour grading, and am aware that blend if has a big role to play in that, so, following on from your excellent blend if videos, would you consider a deep dive into colour grading using TK9? Thanks, John
It seems that there is a lot of benefice to use Blend if instead of luminosity mask. Example: smaller file size, non destructive adjustment, we can copy/paste the ajustement with Blend if to another image, etc. The cons are that we cannot make specific adjustment to it with brush, level or curve. If we do not have to make specific adjustment to our selection (Blend if), is there a difference in the quality result of both approch (luminosity mask and Blend if)? If not, it seems obvious to choose luminosity mask instead of Blend if... Why, by default your are using luminosity mask instead of Blend if? Many thanks for all of your video, I'm a big fan of TK9. I learn a lot from your video. And sorry for my bad english!
So basically any adjustment you make using the Edit Blend if layer panel will always apply to the underlying layer and not the current layer since the handle movements are only shown on the underlying layer when opening up Photoshop's layer styles panel ? Excellent video, thank you very much!
Mark that is not quite right. The Blend If adjustments apply to the current layer but the tones or colours that are used to make the selection are based on the underlying layers. The this layer and underlying layers terms in Photoshops standard Blend If panel control where the tones come from. In practice most photo processing use of Blend If only uses underlying layer values, so Tony has only coded this in to the TK9 panel.
What a wonderful tutorial, Dave! Thank you so much. Queries: When you use a custom blend if preset and after your edits you come back to that layer, how do you know what preset you used if you don't remember? And an "obscure" question: Is there a way to apply blend if to "This layer" instead of the "underlying" layer? I can't think of a case for it at the moment but I know that the blend if tool in PS has that capability. Thank you!
The TK9 Blend If functions only work on underlying layers, no option for using "this layer". Applying Blend If to 'this layer" is probably more use in compositing than the sort of photo processing that TK9 gets used for. Might just have a use in turning white or black on "this layer" effectively transparent, a way to create a gradient map with a "transparent" section which is not possible normally - use white or black and then turn off highlights/shadows using Blend If on "this layer", or overlay a text image with white/black background. For this sort of use standard feature is probably good enough.
