PS3 repair - easy WiFi error fix

- In this video I'm fixing another PS3 Slim with faulty step-down converter (which causes WiFi and Bluetooth to fail).
This is relatively simple procedure and it will (in many cases) fix WiFi and BT issues without the need to replace actual WiFi chip.
WiFi chip failure is often a cause of error 8002f1f9 and this repair will most likely fix it.

Hey! Thanks for posting this, this is super helpful (and your other video on this topic too). I managed to measure the voltages on my CECH-3004B board which is slightly different (but more or less the same) and it's the exact same issue we can see here on your video. No 1.8V on the chip output whatsoever. What do you think, is it possible (theoretically) to feed that 1.8V from an external source of some sort to the wifi chip just to get past a firmware update?
There are no modded firmware available for this model only the stock or the hybrid. All I want is to get past the dreaded 8002F1F9 error while updating the firmware. Once it's done I don't care about wireless - a controller with USB and network with a UTP is just fine.
Unfortunately I don't have the skills and the equipment for this kind of soldering madness not to mention the replacement chip. I could do some basic soldering, so if there is a way I am willing to try... only for those 3 minutes while the fw upgrade lasts.
Looking forward to hear your thoughts on this workaround - this might help others too I think. Thank you.
Does anyone know what causes this in the first place? Mine has been in perfect working order forever, then switched it on today after a few months undisturbed n and now no wifi connection and controllers will not work wirelessly
This chip (as on the video) is providing power for BT all the time - even in sleep. So it's on as long as your PS3 is plugged to the power outlet... It might be bad quality chips they used or design fault - clearly the chip is not built/designed to be "on" for years...
@@RetroTechCorner Makes sense thanks.:)! Might repair mine but might not be worth it as the rest worls fine and can use ethernet if really needed.
2.37 is std voltage. No need to worry. All of them are 2.37
Those two pieces came out below the 1.8 regulator, are they small coils or inductors? Being so small when I brushed with alcohol two came out. those that are the 4 together, would be the two above
What isthe ps3 slim step-down converter chip called? I'm having trouble finding one to purchase online.
Rt8057 step down voltage converter
Does the backwards compatible ps3 E01 have the same chip? My console doesn't work for wifi and bt ive already tried replacing the board and ribbon cables.
Thank you!
Hello, thank you for this vidéo !!!! i never do that but i want to try it !! my PS3 is an ultra slim, and it's blocked with error code "8002F1F9" !!! so for that PS3 Ultra slim, can i have the exact chip reference and if possible the products you put on it ( I'm a beginner!!!) ? thank you for your help
Hi, in my ps3 the IC with ‘463A’ on it does not have 5,5 volts on pin 1. Pin 2 has 3,3v.
So I assume that this IC is the cause of the BT/Wifi failure.
Where can I buy a replacement for that IC?
Regards, Peter
Please tell me that you could fix my PS3 Super Slim which has the same problem. I am from Greece, any chance I could ship it to you and get it fixed?
Hey nice Video, can you also do it for the PS3 3000?
I don't know - I don't have any 3000 PS3...
@@RetroTechCorner Can I send you my PS3 ? I think it would be worth a try... I don't have BT and WIFI and cant finish a Software update because of this... Of course I'll take the shipping costs by myself and take over all costs.
I Got a 2504a with an 8002f1f0 error. Does this fix it too because i think this Error is related with the WiFi Chip too
if you're getting 0v on the output (as in the video) then there's a chance your wifi chip is OK. and yes - that will fix the error (if wifi chip is OK)
Mine has 5v and 3.3v but the output that should be 1.8v (in your case was 0v) is 5v too. It is shorted between that 5v test point and the cap that should read 1.8v. So in this case I am guessing it would have destroyed the WiFi chip too and I wouldn't be able to do a BGA repair with an iron or hot air.
Anywhere in the UK recommended? I tried the C0d3r at consolefix and can't get a reply out of him, even if it is to say "no thanks".
Yes, if it's 5v then your WiFi chip is most likely dead.
@@RetroTechCorner could I send it to you for repair from the UK? I could replace this chip, but not the wifi chip as assuming that needs a BGA rework machine rather than just a hot air station.
Hey man, I have a question. My PS3 Slim has this Bluetooth/Wifi problem CECH-3004B so I ordered a new PS3 CECH-3004B. Can I just replace the whole mainboard with my PS3 and the issue will be fixed?
You'll also need to replace optical drive and hard drive (or format/initialize existing one)
@@RetroTechCorner So my PS3 still has a lot of savegames and I dont wanna lose it. Is there any way to fix my issue without losing all my saves?
@ayden5883 You can try transferring the data from your old PS3 to your new PS3 using a LAN cable
@@ayden5883you can copy ps3 data using ps3 hen or USB save files
Powerd down the 1.8v rail is shorted to ground
Plugging it in it is 2.2V (which seems to be right)
so I guess the regulator is not broken ?
and I can try and replace the Wifi/Bt chip ?
I Got all voltages correct but not the 1.8v its 2.4v on my console. Does that mean the WiFi Chip is broken?
no, I don't think so. I've had 2.3 to 2.4V on most new chips I installed. One of them is my PS3 and it's been working for months now (connected to the socket all the time).
@@RetroTechCorner so i Only Need to Chance the little Chip? Because im getting the error while updating
Sorry - I think misunderstood your question. So you did not replace the chip - it's 2.4 "from factory" and you're still getting update error - correct? If so then I'd try installing another HDD. If that still fails then it's probably wifi chip.
@@RetroTechCorner no i didn’t replaced the chip and the regulator. It’s 2,4 from factory. And I got 8002F1F0. I will try another had later thx
@@RetroTechCorner Ok i tried to install HFW 4.90.1 on another HDD and got the same error means the Wifi Chip is broken...
should be 1.8V,; these Chinese chips are not so great to regulate voltage
The one I'm using in this video is from mouser... So it's legit. I've been using the PS3 from last video for a few weeks now and everything seems to be OK (it's plugged in all the time)...
@@RetroTechCorner a variation of the same chip named J73 fails also on xbox 360 and the result is that the xbox is completely dead. no standby power on the 1.8V rail. if you ever encounter a dead xbox360 that wont power on, look for the J73 chip towards the power plug area.... U5A written on the board
@@RetroTechCorner Any chance you have the Mouser part number? Great videos on this repair by the way! I haven't found the root cause of my console yet but hoping that either my failure is the step down or that you'll be making another video for the wifi chip soon :D Keep up the great vids!
It looks like they are no longer available at mouser. Here's digikey link to this exact chip: www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/richtek-usa-inc/RT8057GQW-2/4146466
As for another video (ie. replacing Wifi chip) - I don't know. I have a huge backlog of Nintendo Switches and need to focus on these. But I will do the video as soon as I get my hands on PS3 with faulty WiFi chip (which may or may not happen - I don't get that many PS3s for repair these days...).
WiFi chip replacement is harder than RT8057 - you need to remove the shield (needs a lot of heat as it's soldered) and the chip isn't small so positioning and precision is the key)
@@RetroTechCorner Thanks for the reply and digikey link, I really appreciate your time!
master help me please 🙏🙏🙏
Спасибо за видео. Если данный способ не помог, в чем ещё может быть проблема ?
You call this an easy fix? Really
Yes, it's a lot easier than replacing the WiFi chip. And I mean _a lot_ easier.
My chip says J7B or J78 its hard to see it
