Wow 10,000 views and over 100 new subscribers!! THANK YOU people who find and watch this video and think it's a good video! I REALLY really appreciate it. Many have asked; the theme at 3:04 is the Akiba's Trip theme from the Japanese store. ALSO, People have said to, or suggest replacing the hard drive in many comments! Replacing the hard drive does NOT fix the dead wifi/bluetooth chip (or blue-ray drive for others) that causes the error to happen in the first place. Just wanted to clarify that. ALSO, I am currently editing the Next Video, which needs to be out soon. The Next Video: ua-cam.com/video/jeV-GT_Fl_8/v-deo.html
MY advice to any young system collector. Take a course in Electronic basic repair. Reasoning behind this is that in a few years all old tech will develop faults, and if you know how to fix these issues, you will save a ton of bodge jobs by attempting or getting others to do it for you. Electronics gets/is complex, however the basics of fault finding and replacing delicate components is not as hard as it looks. and most of the time it's simple things like Capacitors or diodes that are causing the issues, and not the chips/main hardware.
never get a ps3 super slim sure they are are cheap but games like dead space 3 gta5 or 4 will all crash gta5 only after prolouge qnd dead space 3 immediantly during the fall it breaka or crashes but gta4 doesent let you see light of day Bye have a great day! ❤
You can appreciate it for its wonderful library of games and memories, MGS4 and GOW3 were gas. I think all the build problems and the fact that most console gamers don't DIY at all keep it from even being a *good* console, though, physically.
@@VictorHugoAlvarez-tc4tgyeah we should protect ps3's as well as we can but that won't change the fact that more and more of them will die from hardware issues. They are not manufactured anymore, neither are their replacement parts. In the long run, emulation is the only reliable way to give people access to the great library of ps3 games.
@@Allious131 Because You Want To Play PS3 but you can't because you don't have the hardware so you expecting an emulator to play every Ps3 Exclusive and work 100% like a PS3 Running its games? I will never happen.
You can get out of an update loop by removing the HDD after the console reboots from a failed update. It has to pass the HDD check first before you remove it. Its a tight window, but it works.
This is almost impossible. I’ve heard of examples, but I don’t think video evidence exists of this method. Replacing the bluetooth / wifi module and the voltage regulator to properly fix it is doable, but you’re going to need decent soldering skills AND a decent hand with a heat gun.
@@MrCoolguy525 I have helped a handful of fellow trophy boosters on Discord get out of the loop this way. It happens with corrupted update files from internet updates too. Not just failed hardware. By breaking out of the loop, they can install from USB and get back online.
I’ve gotten out of one with an old g01 with a failed Blu-ray drive. Took days of swapping parts and trying different update files. Finally got it working by swapping the Blu-ray drive and hdd out.
Good news I saved my PS3 that was giving me an endless loop update. I had to download the new update on another console with same HDD from the one that was giving me problems then remove that HDD from that console and place it in the one giving me the problems. As soon as I did that I also had the 4.91 download on a fat32 usb stick. It worked and it just wanted to format the HDD again and before reinstalling the update. Hope this helps everyone cause it fixed mine!
@@bluedash24 The HDD or SSD that’s in the PS3 that’s giving you the endless loop is corrupted. You have to get the 4.91 update on it by another console for it to work before you can place it back into the original console to get it reformatted for the update on that console. It may or may not work via by the internet so it’s safe to have the 4.91 update on fat32 usb just in case what I did. I never tried because the console I did first didn’t give me problems which was both my super slim and original backwards compatible PS3. The one that gave me the endless loop was my non backwards compatible ps3 that was originally modded with CFW HEN. So other words if you don’t have another console that is already updated to the current patch then this method will not work. I couldn’t find anything online to fix this so I just experimented and it worked!
@@TheNickers69has anyone tried just putting in a blank hard drive or using a computer to format the original drive? The ps3 can do a fresh os install to a blank hard drive, all you need is the USB stick with the update file on it.
The console market seems mainly held up by children who are too young to operate an OS. It was inevitable for monopolies in the console space to milk people for every penny they've got when they lack other options. Maybe there's hope for steam's OS if they can mimic a console's simplicity.
I would say yes but also no on console market. In exemple, I play GTA Online for relax. Being on PC for years but mod menus make it unplayable except in solo/friends lobby. The combo of console security and paywall agains alt trolls is a safety I would trade for nothing since I remade a character on PS5. Same for crossplay, I turn it off the moment cheatengine get release on other games. But some people don't want or can't pay for those entertainment services, I join you on SteamOS(and Steamdeck) is a good alternative.
This is exactly why RPCS3 is essential to keeping these games alive! Despite Sony claiming that the PS3 can't be emulated, the people behind the emulator have been making slow, yet great progress in making as many titles as possible playable for computer based devices. And yet, Sony has the power to fix this issue, and it doesn't have to take that much for them to do it. Instead we have to rely on coders and hackers, who have worked their butts off to make up for all this! Screw Sony and their lack of respect for their classics!
they have no respect, because they are so rich, at this point it does not matter. They are focusing their money on bigger things.... more.... Sinister things. Things like world domination, controlling the japanese government, and building a shit ton of hydrogen nukes. when the apocalypse comes, know sony caused it
i’m playing x-men origins wolverine rn at 4k 60 on rpcs3. shit it’s amazing to play these games at enhanced resolution and FPS. If only MP games worked too that’d be mind blowing
@@tcscomment Fun fact, the later wireless adapter models for the wifi-less 360s actually support 5GHz networks, using one on a Slim 360 gives you access to 5GHz networks too. Not that it really matters since this year we lose the 360 store too. Then until people give it the same treatment as Dreamcast and GameCube games where independent servers let you play online after the official support ended, the 360 and PS3 will be stuck in limbo for a time.
Sony doesn't care about us PS3 enthusiasts anymore. They should give the possibility to install Linux back to all models, that would be awesome move from their side, but this won't happened. This would make a lot people happy (I would love to have linux on CECH-3000), and I don't see how this could affect Sony in any way nowadays.
I have looked into trying to install Linux on PS3 but it wasn’t worth the trouble vs installing Linux on a computer. PS3’s Cell CPU architecture made the majority of Linux distros incompatible so there’s no point trying to install a half baked OS on the PS3. I have a PS5 and I hardly ever use the web browser on the machine. UA-cam app works well on the PS5 however there’s no comment section available under the video even after signing into UA-cam. I have abandoned the idea of using PlayStation as a computer as its much easier to use a Steam Deck instead as it was designed to be both a gaming machine and as a basic computer.
1. Why you need Linux on the PS3 if theres isnt no distributions like Ubuntu, Fedora, and more for the console 2. You can actually install Linux on CFW
Sony are not in the business of facilitating easy access to their older, more fondly regarded systems that had larger and superior catalogues of games... which, by the way, they would rather re-sell on their current service. That wouldn't make business sense would it 😂 If Sony could snap their fingers and "Thanos" every PS3 out of existence without the negative publicity, I have no doubt they would.
they removed the linux install mode for security reasons. the cell processor was extremely powerful for computational tasks, and made the system perfect for brute-force password cracking. for this reason, sony cannot allow the ps3 to run linux easily.
And that ladies and gentlemen is how you stop the game wars. I'm mainly a Playstation guy myself. I own all the Playstations from the very original to the ps5. I even have multiple of the same console (ps2, ps3, and ps4), but I am interested in buying an Xbox Series X just to play halo and sunset overdrive.
Changing the wifi/bluetooth module (and likely the voltage regulator that powers it) will fix it. I fixed mine this way. It was my first BGA repair, but I would not recommend most people trying it at home. It should be easy enough to find a local repair shop that can fix it for you at a reasonable cost. The module is available for under $20 shipped to you. Using wifi isn't what causes this to go out. I'm not sure whether the module goes out first and then fries the voltage regulator, or the regulator blows and fries the module... Regardless, both of them are powered whenever your PS3 is plugged in, as they have to be powered in order to be able to turn on from the wireless controllers. So many of them many years of running almost constantly.
I've always felt lucky about my PS3 and this just adds to it. I managed to get ahold of my matte black (first slim? middle fat model thing?) ps3 back in 2018. I got it for 25 dollars from a guy who needed any money he could get to bail his brother out. It had an overheat issue and give a yellow light and shut off after being on for a couple minutes. I brought it home, took it apart, cleaned all the dog hair and dust out of it, and replaced the thermal compound with some artic silver 5. I immediately modded it. Thankfully at the time the firmware version I had was safe and able to mess around with modding it. I had an absolute blast with it and I still get it out and play it.
While I agree that Sony patching this would be the best case scenario, it's sadly not an option. Actually repairing the wi-fi chip is. People need to be less afraid of opening up and tinkering with their hardware, honestly. It's the only real way to actually OWN the stuff you're buying instead of letting Sony decide when and for how long you get to use it.
I have a solution for this. I have a ps3 super slim and it did this to me and I couldn't play for over a year until I saw a post on Reddit that said this: When you start the ps3 and after you hear the sound of the hard disk getting working then wait 3 seconds then take off the hard disk and you shall see a screen telling you to insert a usb with the new update, after that just put the hard disk back in and press START + SELECT to start the update from the usb stick. This bug only occurs when you update your system through the Internet, so I highly recommend you to update using a usb for future updates I hope this helps
Hey, UA-cam algorithm, help this video get out there and ended up in more people's recommendeds, like how it ended up my recommendeds. I'm already doing my part to help by liking and commenting on this video, now work your magic.

Wow, thanks for the comment! I'd have to send mine to get repaired. I don't have the tools or knowledge to do that stuff. I've taken a few things apart to clean them but that's about it. If I did have the tools, I'd definitely try to fix something easier first considering the system still works fine, besides the no online part.
My original Fat launch PS3 sadly died in 2014, I got a Slim in 2018 & still love playing games on it. Emulation for the console is still not the most reliable thing, its still better to just play it on this. It's sad that stuff like this is happening. Without backwards compatibility on the PS5 for ps1,2,3 games even tho it easily could is just sad because SO MANY GREAT GAMES ARE STILL LOCKED ON THESE CONSOLES!
Yoo this is terrifying wtf, luckily my 12 year old ps3 slim is alive and kicking, but for how long? I don't want it to die because of some goofy hardware quirks.
@@rosstee Thanks for the reply! I only connected it a few years ago once with the internet cable and never connected it to my Wi-Fi so I guess I'm safe then.
I have PS3HEN 4.90. I was going to update to 4.91 so I can continue to play online but this Video has scared me into never updating again and just play the Games offline. It's a real fault that DOES eventually kill your PS3!
I jailbroke my PS3 years ago now, so I never update the system the official way anymore. That said; it's still good to know about potential hardware issues I may encounter with my PS3 before they arise; since that gives me a chance to prepare as best I can before they happen. I know it's inevitable that the PS3 will one day kick the bucket; it's inevitable for all hardware to eventually no longer work, but I at least want to keep my PS3 around for as long as I possibly can.
It’s sad to think that the PS3’s are starting to die out for specific technical reasons. I really hope my Slim (2nd model) doesn’t die out (and also I hope to attempt to mod it as well)
I have a feeling this was intentional and Sony's "fix" will be the ps5 pro is backwards compatible to ps3 games and you can download the games from your ps3 libary as long as it's under the same playstation account
No, it was not intentional, this happened back in 2008. It's an update bug. To solve this issue, all you need is to get another hard drive from another PS3 and put it in your current PS3 and it will update okay. This video acts like this is the first time happened. Which is not. It's a well-known thing.
Wtf? Are you on drugs? Sony doesnt care about the ps3, bc on ps5 would mostly not happen, they wouldnt win any money with that. just think, sony doing that would only just increase ps5 sales, but sales that only want to play ps3 dont matter because sony nintendo and microsoft sale console at a lose... In reality, sony make the hardware check in order to avoid people to hack their console like the cobra ode did, but it didnt work at the end.
@@mohammadalhoshan8196 Well, they do have the knowledge on the PS3 and its hardware, so they probably could make it backwards compatible... the CPU should be powerful enough too actually... with well written software that is. The issue mainly lies in costs. If it'd cost too much to develop, they won't do it. I have my doubts though, the PS5 Pro already seems half assed from what I've heard so far, and they can just paywall game streaming and call it a day while raking in the premium cash.
Naw sony is just stupid. Saw a yt video where a guy had to replace the ribbon on the disc drive in order to get a ps5 out of an update loop. They intentionally made their systems unable to update properly if even the dumbest thing is not in order... freakin ps5 put into a frozen update loop because of a DISK DRIVE malfunction... not all ps5s even have those. Ive even heard this ps3 update failure can happen because of a bad cmos battery for time and date. Replacing the cmos pulled the system out of the update loop😂
Thankfully with the early phat models (CECHA - CECHK) there is a swappable wifi / bt card that’s connected via a single ribbon cable and is connected to an antenna on the back which can also be unplugged from the card. So if it breaks you can easily switch it out since it’s one of the first things that you see when opening the console. Sadly it’s still the phat consoles. The CECHA - CECHH models have the 90nm RSX so they could eventually die due to that unless you do a Frankenstein or you attempt to keep the RSX as cool as possible with no overclocking (from experience the overclock will cause the chip to artifact and from what I can tell I’m unsure if you can fix it). If you are going for a model that won’t have this issue and is probably the most reliable that has a swappable wifi / bt card, go for the CECHK or CECHJ model (depending on your region). The card also has USB ports on it as well which can be swapped out with the card. The Nec tokins will still eventually lose capacity but it will take some time before they actually do. Another workaround without messing with the hardware would be to buy a CFW compatible console, as long as you’re still on the previous update, just patch your system then update to the latest version using the no wifi/bt update, this will skip past the wifi and Bluetooth card check. I know this is a lot to read, but thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope you have a wonderful day :)
I happen to have a PS3 that hasn't been used in a while. It may have one of these issues, but I wouldn't update it anyway, even if there wasn't an issue with the process.
HDD wipe and letting the ps3 re format it should fix it usually. Dead WiFi chips like you said are the most common issues(sadly there is no fw for non cfw compatible consoles that skips over the bt/WiFi chip yet) Wait till someone breaks through CPU lv1 security and it'll be solved. CPU lv1 is what stops slims(not including 2000 series) to not be able to have cfw. It'll come in the next few years for sure
I really hope that will happen cause HEN nice and stuff but having the option for CFWs is just way nicer, especially if you wifi or Blu-ray board isn't working
Agree, I once had a PS3 with a bad Bluray drive, but was able to install HEN afterwards. I used HFW 4.86 NoDVD/BD parched file update. Not sure if nowadays they still provide these patches.
By the way, you can jailbreak your software and use newer versions of CFW, there are usually "noBT/noBD" variations that allow you to update WITHOUT this error. However, it's probably still safer to stay on your own software, I'm doubting things are changing, unless you still use your PS3 for watching brand new blu-rays or something.
This seems like an oddly convenient coincidence. I literally fired up my PS3 like a week ago (for the first time in probably over a year) to update it, only to find the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wasn't working anymore. This is a system I've never previously had any problems with. And I would not say it's lived a hard life with the ton of use. Truth be told I don't play it a ton. Guess it's a blessing I was too lazy to carry it upstairs and connect it to the ethernet. Lol.
Why update ps3 through internet when you can sagely updated it through usb officially, it is the same with xbox 360, never did a internet update whenever a update popup appeared i closed it and did the usb update method, never had a problem.
My PS3 slim had the same wifi/bt issue. Like you said, it's either the voltage regulator or the wifi/bt module itself. The voltage regulator is super cheap, part # RT8057GQW. I replaced that and it still didn't work. The chip is super tiny, so it's definitely not something I'd recommend if you don't have the right equipment. The wifi/bt module is a huge pain to replace on the slim, so I just bought another PS3. Most likely that will fail eventually too. If the PS3 isn't being used very often, the best thing is to unplug the power, that chip is constantly on and will eventually burn out.
Love it! CBOMB has been patched in custom firmware, but for models that can't be jailbroken you're beholden to SONY. Yeah, it's BS! I had that issue with the wifi module VRM. I used it as justification to steal it's 40nm RSX for a frankenstein mod. It was a KTE-001 (CECH-3001A), not fully jailbreakable, and therefore not desirable. This is why the 21xx models are the most desirable slims. They have the reliable BT/wifi modules from 20xx model and 40nm instead of 65nm GPU, don't have NEC/Tokins, and are all jailbreakable. The 25xx model changed to that unreliable wifi module that is dying. Super slims too. Axx through 20xx models have tokins that are getting old and failing. The 21xx is often considered the most reliable model of PS3 because of this. Of course, PS3 is just getting old at this point. Things break and need repaired. That's just a reality of the 7th generation onward.
That's awesome I love your work. I thought all original PS3's were all doomed before your videos (well, they sort of are from the factory) Was unaware earlier slims have more reliable modules, but that makes sense. My brother has a 20xx slim that still works fine. Wish I never got rid of my original system now that frankenstein mods exist.
This needs more attention. Recently had my wifi chip go out on me, luckily I haven’t plugged in the Ethernet and updated before watching this. You might have just saved my ps3. Thanks man!
I saw this coming a couple of years ago so I downloaded all of the games from my library (I wanted to keep forever) and all dlc I thought I'd ever want. Then I installed custom firmware which warns me against updating anyway (and prevents an accidental install by giving a warning message). Then I jailbroke my PSP since they stopped letting me transfer my downloaded PSP games from the PS3. So I deleted all my PSP games (on the PS3 HDD) since I can now get the ISOs from an external HDD anytime I want which freed up more space for PS3 games/whatever. So now, update prompts I get are ignored, all my games are still around, and I can get any game I ever wanted to play for free. Screw Sony. Never again.
I hadn't updated my PS3 is a year or 2, just not feeling like I needed to update it. Plus I play only offline games on my old 1.5 model (the personally "named" 1 after the initial launch that removed the PS2 compatibility), including my 1st ever handful of import games, mainly from Japan. (I knew enough katakana to be able to "wing it" through the menus) This video really makes me glad that I haven't updated my system in a while. I still have my entire Playstation "family" (not counting PSP, which I had at 1 time, but haven't seen it in years, & don't count since it's a handheld, or Vita) to this day, & I would be really sad if suddenly, an update completely bricked 1 of my systems. I got a good spook when my PS4 was stuck in a transfer loop (after setting up my PS5) & didn't know what to do for a while. I figured it out eventually thankfully. Sony really needs to step up game preservation.
Both of my PS3s still have working WiFi/Bluetooth, so mine are unaffected for now, I have both a slim and a fat, I had the slim for many years now, but, it doesn't support CFW so I went ahead and bought the fat. One thing that I notice is that the slim picks up a MUCH better wifi signal than my fat, not sure if it's just due to (obviously) different hardware revisions or if the fat has a failing wireless module. Like the slim gets better speeds (seemingly) and more signal strength (comparison made with both in the same spot)
this is good to know! My GF has a modded ps3 and I don't think she uses wifi on it but I'll let her know not to or else it'll die. thank you! Also what's that smiley face hiding? what dark secrets do you have on that sticker?
If the PS3 is modded, you can install firmware that disables the checks. Modders win once again. The hidden sticker is an edgy death metal album cover youtube might not like
I pulled out my old ps3 super slim since I’m an Xbox person now and the hdmi broke. It doesn’t play games anymore, it freezes or shuts down and beeps 3 times the moment you load a game.
Thank you for this info. I will just put all internet connections off from the settings. I bought my PS3 Slim about a year ago since I preferred Xbox better. I did have PS1 and PS2 before getting the original Xbox and later on Xbox 360, Xbox One, One X and Series X. The most I like in Xbox is the controller. The asymmetrical analog placement is just so much more comfortable and ergonomical. I've gotten 25+ games for my PS3 and I will just continue growing that collection with some specific games.
My childhood ps3 has been having issues with booting 100% of the time. The cmos battery died in it as the time does not save when power is disconnected from it. When it doesn’t boot, it does a fan clean out for a few times and then it finally boots. In the end, technology will never last forever, we should enjoy it while it still lasts.
So an update just "happens" to brick PS3's just like an apple update to "preserve battery life" just "happened" to slow down phones. This is why I keep my retro consoles offline.
Waking via PS Vita Remote Play with the PS3 connected via ethernet cable worked for me (either that or unplugging the PS3 for a few hours??) I was stuck in the 8002F1F9 update loop. I tried to update my firmware (4.90 -> 4.91) because I couldn't get my controllers to connect wirelessly. For this to possibly work, you would need to have had remote play set up before the update loop (no borrowing a random Vita, because a looping PS3 won't recognize it) and a [preconfigured?] connection via ethernet cable. After getting stuck in this loop, I turned off my PS3 and unplugged it for a few hours while I did something else. I then plugged in the PS3 without touching the power button and attempted to connect via remote play over a private network (I'm not sure if a connection via the internet would have worked). This awakened my PS3, it started to attempt the update again, the update stopped between 40-50% and went straight to the normal PS3 startup screen. My firmwware is now displayed as 4.91 (maybe in name only?). Scanning for bluetooth devices or wifi networks still doesn't work, but I can log in on PSN and the Playstation store and use the web browser via an ethernet cable. I'm guessing my problem is the wifi/bluetooth chip, but I don't have a voltage testing thingy or soldering or heat gun, and I don't plan on learning with this as my first project. So I'll just play my PS3 with wired controllers and count myself lucky. Vita means Life!
In God's name, why the fuck would anyone update a PS3? There is nothing new, nothing good, just shit from Sony to destroy the console. Why the hell haven't you jailbroken already? I never bought any games because I knew that one day, they would shut down the service and all the money spent would turn to shit. PS3 and X360 were the last consoles that were worth it, after that there is only shit that is a custom PC with exclusive games, and no decent jailbreak. Jailbreaking the PS3 is essential to control fan speed more efficiently, prolonging the console's useful life.
@@Jesse12489 And what did you update it to? What were the improvements? Zero. You just remain a slave to Sony until their goodwill runs out, and you are left without access to the PlayStation store due to the obsolescence of the PS3.

Replace the old hard drive with a new one or an ssd. That way you can start fresh. You’ll need a computer and a usb, format the usb to FAT32 and install the ps3 update on Sonys website. Then update the console with your usb and fresh new hdd/ssd. I’ve put a 512GB SSD in my ps3 super slim and she’s quite as anything. I went with an ssd because it had no moving parts, which means it’s less likely to fail.
basically there pulling a microshaft moment, they put a time limit on ur win10 pc jack up the throttle to 100 on ur gpu till it goes and ur mechanical hdd by removing the firmware of it completly to where it cant be even seen, forced to buy a new pc, starts with wifi and ethernet, then hdd and gpu till its done. seen this on 3 of my pcs. force phase out. sony may have adopted this as well to force out ps3''s and force u to buy ps5s, just like the cellphone crap there forcing u to buy 5g phones, next would be 10g and 5g goes bye bye theres another 1500 dollar phone, again forcing all to upgrade. its come down to ur not really buying the hardware anymore, ur just paying rent on a temp device where they have full control and can ruin it anytime, seen it with apple, android, microshaft, etc. i know im not the only one thats noticed it, its a repeating cycle for them to make cash fast.

Sony needs to come out with a fix for the CMOS battery section of the motherboard that causes all PS3 digital games not possible to be played anymore when the CRT battery dies. Just like how Sony came out with a patch for the PS4 that would've caused the same problem as we see with PS3 consoles concerning digital games. These days, in a PS4, if the CRT battery dies, sure the correct local time will not show itself correctly any more but you can at least still enjoy your digital games. In the PS3, if you're lucky, the CRT battery will last at least another decade before the CRT battery dies. When this happens, you'll only be able to play physical copies of games if you're lucky to own any of them in the future. By the way, physical copies of retro games will possibly just get more expensive as time goes by, so in some cases, you'll be very fortunate to own certain titles.
I wish I had seen this video sooner and updated my console... I also have the 8002F1F9 error and will be driving it to a service center near me to have them replace the module. Let's just hope it doesn't cost a lot....
It was the last time that sony or microsoft bothered to even be creative and innovative with their consoles and games. Once the ps4 hit, it all became corporate hogwash and trying to keep everything so similar that creativity and innovation dont exist in the gaming space outside of indie devs and sometimes when nintendo does something great like the switch. I wish we could actually throw out these CEOs and corporate morons and replace them with people who ACTUALLY CARE about gaming.
I mostly agree about the innovation thing, especially now, but I still think the PS4 has pretty solid library. Gravity Rush 2 and Death Stranding are two my favorite games ever. I got into the Like a Dragon/Yakuza series on PS4, and now that's one of my favorite series. Lots of other good games (I have over 100 PS4 games). The PS4 was good during the Shawn Layden and Andrew House era. Shawn was a gamer. Andrew knew the Japanese side, spoke the language, got Kojima on board. Once Jim Ryan came in as CEO, that's really when PlayStation started going downhill in my eyes.
This happened last year to my Superslim that I bought new in 2013. Luckily I read up on it first so didn’t try to update it and brick it. I’ve ended up getting a still working Slim model from a charity shop that I now use as my main PS3.
I almost updated last night .. because there was a new version of hen that works with the update unfortunately my laptop is broke so I couldn’t download the hen update on my flash drive.. I still play cod online but oh well lol
Is this issue limited to SLIM models, or are FAT models also affected? I have a FAT model but always have my wifi disconnected unless I manually activate the wifi from the menu's.
It affects fat models too, but the wifi/BT chip on those can be replaced fairly easily. On slim's, the chip is soldered to the motherboard with a ball grid array and it's a huge pain in the ass to replace.
Modding a PS3 Will always be the greatest thing anymore Because Playing them Legit anymore unless they're Like a System You truly care about and don't want banned and It's Sedimental but honestly it's worth just upping the storage and Getting a Shxt Ton of games and Having fun
Yes honestly Sony fking sucks. A few days ago I bought a couple of games for the PSP, tried to install it by connecting it to the PS3 but always resulted in connection error, and it never ends. Changing the password a million times, was never able to fix it. Sometimes it bypasses this connection error however, it then gives me 2 different errors that still won't let me install THE GAMES I JUST BOUGHT. Most games are not even shown on the PS store and u have to manually search for them. Games costs a so much, and good luck running them too. Errors left and right. I've resorted to pirating them. Thing is, I'd gladly pay for these games, but clearly Sony doesn't care about whether I bought them or not, nor is it making it even accessible to play em. So, they fking suck and I'll just be pirating these games.
@@bonkmaykr We are talking about game preservation if a PS3 will fail. With emulation you can fix most PS3 problems like low resolution and poor frame rate anyway, so PC is the best option in the future.
@@epicon6 Oooh my bad. In that case absolutely. I'm all for emulators I'm just concerned about accessibility and I think that there's a reason people still use their old consoles, we should preserve the hardware too if we can of course. RPCS3 is kind of a special case where it's very mature and well developed but the cost to actually run it on today's hardware exceeds just having an old console so for a lot of people that more sustainable option isn't there for them.
i had issues that apparently were bluetooth wifi module dying what i had done was i bought a new ssd and the console was already jailbroken, and so i installed hen directly in that new ssd instead of installing the ofw and then jailbreakimg with hen, that caused the issues, giving me errors indicating bluetooth module had died. but it didnt, because the d ssd wasnt having same errors,so i did a format on the new ssd installed ofw and them hen. so i would suggest trying that,my ps3 is slim quite old,and still working, module wifi is fine and discs working.
Wow, glad I am always behind in updates. Thanks for sharing. Seems like there is no reason to update HFW or OFW beyond 4.86 since HEN latest always supports many older versions
been dipping my toes into PS3 modding and never knew about this, even if sony never makes the update you've still warned us about this brick and that's almost as good as an update in my eyes. thank you
Somehow i knew something like this was gonna happen. Thankfully i was able to jailbreak my ps3 before newer updates arrived. And there is a way to bypass the updates with said jailbroken ps3 but i forgot. So its still possible to play most games regardless as long as you don't abuse the power
I don't remember which update it was but after one of the last times I updated my PS3 it suddenly couldn't play Blu-Ray properly any more. Sony advised sending in the PS3 for repair. I checked it out and users were saying that Sony were citing different reasons for the issue and getting people to send in their older PS3. Sony would then claim it couldn't be repaired and would charge £150 to send you a PS3 Slim as a replacement. So, I was prepared when I contacted them. They said it was my hard drive that was probably the issue. I told them not only had I replaced my hard drive recently with a bigger capacity version of the same drive, but my original drive was in an external case and still working perfectly. I knew then that this was a con to try and get the new PS3 Slim rolled out. The fact is that my Blu-Ray drive was able to play DVDs perfectly so there was no mechanical issue. It could also play Blu-Rays and Blu-Ray games, but they would stall after a little while. To prove my theory I put in the Mulan Movie on Blu-Ray and watched the whole thing. I had to stop and start it many times, but it showed every frame. The error that came up referred to memory problems, but Sony would have me believe that there was a mechanical fault that necessitated upgrading my model. This is a classic case of trying to program in redundancy. The same thing Microsoft were caught doing. Sony wanted the Fat PS3 to die so they could upsell to the newer model. With users being faithful to their Fats the newer machines weren't selling as well as they hoped.
Something I noticed about this error is that it always occurs on CECH 25XX/30XX Slims or every Super Slim far more often than the older models. The older Slims and all Phats have a far more reliable wireless chipset, so I highly encourage getting an older model (21xx is the besr bur the 65nm RSX phats are fine too) if you still like playing on a real PS3.
There is a video game repair shop not far from my house that I have used before. I had to have my laser fixed and they replaced the disc drive of the PS3 to do so. Cost me around $55. It’s been working fine since. I wonder how much it would cost to change the Wi-Fi chip if I need to?

MY advice to any young system collector. Take a course in Electronic basic repair. Reasoning behind this is that in a few years all old tech will develop faults, and if you know how to fix these issues, you will save a ton of bodge jobs by attempting or getting others to do it for you.
Electronics gets/is complex, however the basics of fault finding and replacing delicate components is not as hard as it looks.
and most of the time it's simple things like Capacitors or diodes that are causing the issues, and not the chips/main hardware.

You can get out of an update loop by removing the HDD after the console reboots from a failed update. It has to pass the HDD check first before you remove it. Its a tight window, but it works.
Never worked for me had to sell it.

Sorry, I’m kind of confused… Might you be able to elaborate? What happens after you put the 2nd console’s HDD into the 1st one? 😮
Well done. That’s what I did back in 2008. There was a update bug before Sony removed it shortly .
Being one of last consoles you can play online without pay anything, it's kinda sad.
Saw the update requirement and thought, "Nah I'm good going to skip this one"
Sounds like the best decision I have made so far this year
Yup I am staying on 4.83 I have no reason to update my ps3 slim. I have hen already installed and it works just fine.

If Sony could snap their fingers and "Thanos" every PS3 out of existence without the negative publicity, I have no doubt they would.
they removed the linux install mode for security reasons. the cell processor was extremely powerful for computational tasks, and made the system perfect for brute-force password cracking. for this reason, sony cannot allow the ps3 to run linux easily.

Depending on what exact model of slim you have (more to the point, the date code on it), now might be the time to take the plunge on modding it.
I have a feeling this was intentional and Sony's "fix" will be the ps5 pro is backwards compatible to ps3 games and you can download the games from your ps3 libary as long as it's under the same playstation account
The PS5 pro's CPU isn't powerful enough to emulate a PS3. Even most desktop CPUs have a hard time with PS3 emulation.

I got the yellow light, last year. One of the saddest days of my life.
Thank god my PS3 wifi still works, don’t have to worry about this right now
My PS3 slim had the same wifi/bt issue.
I thought all original PS3's were all doomed before your videos (well, they sort of are from the factory)
Was unaware earlier slims have more reliable modules, but that makes sense.
Thanks man!

Thank you for the PSA.
I will spread the word.
Didn't expect to see Lost Planet just randomly surfing the web, wow. Such an underrated game.
this is good to know!
The hidden sticker is an edgy death metal album cover youtube might not like
It's modded its already d/c from Sony...

@mareksinister true
I turned the internet connection off on my PS3 as soon as I learned that the update makes them unmoddable.
This needs to get more recognition
My childhood ps3 has been having issues with booting 100% of the time. The cmos battery died in it as the time does not save when power is disconnected from it. When it doesn’t boot, it does a fan clean out for a few times and then it finally boots. In the end, technology will never last forever, we should enjoy it while it still lasts.
So an update just "happens" to brick PS3's just like an apple update to "preserve battery life" just "happened" to slow down phones.
This is why I keep my retro consoles offline.
Waking via PS Vita Remote Play with the PS3 connected via ethernet cable worked for me (either that or unplugging the PS3 for a few hours??)
I was stuck in the 8002F1F9 update loop.
I updated and nothing's wrong with it.
@@Jesse12489 And what did you update it to? What were the improvements? Zero. You just remain a slave to Sony until their goodwill runs out, and you are left without access to the PlayStation store due to the obsolescence of the PS3.
@@RicardoRamosRetrocomputacao you know I bought the system used and I don't really give a shit. Most of the games I have on it are on the Nintendo switch.

You’re joking about the pc part right please tell me you’re joking
@@McDonnellDouglasMD--no, sadly not. its definitely noticeable on 10+ yr old hardware or non win 11 compatible hardware. there gonna force us one way or another, which is why i removed windows and switched to a different os
By the way, physical copies of retro games will possibly just get more expensive as time goes by, so in some cases, you'll be very fortunate to own certain titles.
stop updating, i know u can’t play online but isn’t that the sacrifice to take, to keep your PS3 alive?
cfw is also a lot of fun btw
A cute little channel that I ended up subscribing to. Great video my man!
@@CoolGroovyFunky all right. Tjanks. But this happens only if the chip is by the end of its lifespan, or regardless of the condition of the chip?
also super slim ?
@@CARNEWBeffects all models with the Wi-Fi chip, every PS3 has a CMOS battery too
This was really well put together. Keep it up!
my Bluetooth and wifi still work on my ps3, sounds like a skill issue even it’s fully updated and it works perfectly fine so definitely a skill issue
So, they fking suck and I'll just be pirating these games.
kenzan shown on screen. W video. best yakuza video i've ever watched.
PS3 emulators will set you free
Yeah but you need a stupidly powerful multicore CPU to play some of the games properly because of the weird architecture conversion
@@bonkmaykrWhat’s bad about a stupidly powerful multicore CPU? 😂
@@epicon6 Money, obviously. Not everyone can afford a brand new computer just because you or I can.
RPCS3 is kind of a special case where it's very mature and well developed but the cost to actually run it on today's hardware exceeds just having an old console so for a lot of people that more sustainable option isn't there for them.
i had issues that apparently were bluetooth wifi module dying
what i had done was i bought a new ssd and the console was already jailbroken, and so i installed hen directly in that new ssd instead of installing the ofw and then jailbreakimg with hen, that caused the issues, giving me errors indicating bluetooth module had died.
but it didnt, because the d ssd wasnt having same errors,so i did a format on the new ssd installed ofw and them hen.
so i would suggest trying that,my ps3 is slim quite old,and still working, module wifi is fine and discs working.
Ps3 is dead
Nah, its fine. Just don't update.
Wow, glad I am always behind in updates. Thanks for sharing. Seems like there is no reason to update HFW or OFW beyond 4.86 since HEN latest always supports many older versions
wow a youtuber who is a normal guy who is kinda funny and not a fucking nightmare to listen to. You are a diamond in the rough great work
been dipping my toes into PS3 modding and never knew about this, even if sony never makes the update you've still warned us about this brick and that's almost as good as an update in my eyes. thank you
(also big ups on using wild canyon from SA2!)
Somehow i knew something like this was gonna happen. Thankfully i was able to jailbreak my ps3 before newer updates arrived. And there is a way to bypass the updates with said jailbroken ps3 but i forgot. So its still possible to play most games regardless as long as you don't abuse the power
haha, same i know there is a way to bypass the updates on CFW but i've long forgot
Bro spitting the fax we need in the gaming community. I hope your channel grows
Subscribed, thus video was awesome dude, gave me vibes of the actual era the PS3 was out.
My consol is still bricked 😢
There is a video game repair shop not far from my house that I have used before. I had to have my laser fixed and they replaced the disc drive of the PS3 to do so. Cost me around $55. It’s been working fine since. I wonder how much it would cost to change the Wi-Fi chip if I need to?
Okay.... Sony is really starting to live up to that Onion skit from a decade ago wtf is going on?!
Spread the word. I don't currently own a PS3, but I was hoping to start collecting for it. This needs to be fixed.
This was a bad time to change my hard drive and trying to install manually the update...
I can't believe it, I just had that error on my PS3 and UA-cam recommended this video to me
