Playstation 3 WiFi / Bluetooth repair

  • In this video I'm fixing WiFi and Bluetooth on a PS3 Slim (25xx series).
    I'm replacing faulty step-down converter that provides voltage for WiFI/BT chip.
    Some WiFi/BT issues can be solved by replacing this particular chip with no need to replace actual WiFi chip itself.
    WiFi chip failure is often a cause of error 8002f1f9 and this repair will most likely fix it.

    My PS3 Slim CECH-2504B Datecode 0C showed a 8002F1F9 update loop when I tried to update to OFW 4.90. It had a bad RT8057 as well, no shorts but 0 Volt at the output. Because I didn't have the right tools and experience to replace the tiny chip, I left the RT8057 where it was and just desoldered the inductor at the output. To generate the voltage, I used a cheap MP1584 step-down regulator module from my tinkering box instead. It's adjustable and converts 5.5 volts to 1.8 volts. The thumbnail-sized 22x17 mm print was placed on the motherboard near the HDD connector with adhesive tape. At this location, there is enough distance in height to the cover plate. The PS3 is now up and running, cleaned and has a new 3V CR2032 battery of course. Thank you so much for this video!

      You're welcome. And thanks for the info - many people asked if it's possible (and I didn't really have a spare PS3 to test it). Now we all know it works - thanks!

    Great work in repairing this particular problem ... Many PS3s have suffered from this chip going bad and got bricked, while been updated without the WiFi-BT chip properly working, because most folks have their consoles plugged-in 24/7, even when not in usage, which is not a good thing ... Hopefully your vid helps many folks repair their consoles, if they have the same issue ... 👍

    Do you know if LAN IC and bt/wifi card share the same power supply? (regulator)
    I have a super slim that has both wifi/controller and LAN intermittent problems.
    Sometimes the LAN works, sometimes the controller can connect wirelessly.
    Most of the times when I try to change something in the internet connection settings, the whole console freezes.
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the very helpful video. Want to see if you have any thoughts on what I found when troubleshooting my PS3. I haven't replaced or removed anything yet.
    When measuring the voltage passing through the black coil to the left of the step-down converter, I'm getting 1.2v which is way lower than the 1.8v it's supposed to be and of course lower than the 2.3v you end up with at the end of the video. So my step-down chip isn't dead like yours was, but it doesn't seem to be putting out the correct voltage. Do you think it's more likely that the 1.3v is ok and the wifi chip is dead for some other reason, or that the 1.3v isn't enough to power the wifi chip so the wifi chip doesn't work and the step-down converter needs to be replaced?

    • @RetroTechCorner
      @RetroTechCorner  Рік тому +2

      Yep, I have 2.3 or 2.4 as well. I thought it's the Chinese chip that doesn't perform well but I ordered a few chips form reputable dealer (ie. mouser as far as I remember) and it exact same output... No idea why that is. I'll check original chip (if I have another working PS3). I use the console from time to time (and it's plugged in all the time so the chip is working all the time) and it's still OK after a few months after chip replacement (with 2.3 volts)

    • @sh06un1s
      @sh06un1s Рік тому +4

      If you don't have Wifi/Bluetooth and a firmware update is ever released, then you're stuck. This is the whole issue. There are hardware checks during the update process that will prevent it from going through with the update. The PS3 will detect issues with the Wifi/Bluetooth, throwing an error code at you, beyond the point of being able to go back to the previous firmware. You'll be stuck in a sort of "safe-mode limbo". It happened to my old PS3, which is why I'm here trying to find a fix. That error code is 8002F1F9 (same one as in the description).
      As long as you don't need to update, and have a reliable USB cable, operation should be fine. It's just that any official update will turn your PS3 into a paperweight unless this is fixed.

    • @RetroTechCorner
      @RetroTechCorner  9 місяців тому +1

      No, I don't think it's a good idea. Voltage drop will depend on the current so it won't be "constant"

    Question - is there a straightforward way to permanently remove/disable WiFi functionality on a PS3?

    • @RetroTechCorner
      @RetroTechCorner  Рік тому +1

      One way is to remove either WiFi chip (not easy) or the chip in the video (no power to the WiFi chip so no WiFi - and it's easy). But you'd lose BT so probably not what you want. As for WiFi itself - just remove all saved networks and WiFi just won't connect to any networks

    Question, I’m getting wireless wifi connection. But, I’m not getting Bluetooth connection so I can’t turn in the ps3 with my controller and I don’t seem to get a Bluetooth connection if I unplug the PS3. What would this be?

    • @RetroTechCorner
      @RetroTechCorner  Рік тому

      I don't think these symptoms would suggest this fault. If the only thing you're missing is BT then I'd start from BT antenna and connector - check if the antenna cable is not broken and if the BT antenna connector is ok.

    how many degrees did you use to desolder
    I tried 300 350 400 and 450 degrees but it didn't come off, in the end I tore the chip to pieces with tweezers, unfortunately I removed and lost the first capacitor under the chip, do you know what function it had? the console still works

    • @RetroTechCorner
      @RetroTechCorner  Рік тому +1

      It depends on the hot air station. On my station 450C and 50% airflow is more than enough. I'd say stating with anything less than 400 makes no sense - the idea is to heat it up quickly.
      And you should never apply any force - the component should lift very easily when it's ready.
      As for the cap - it will work without the cap. I don't know exact value.

    • @blazetownsend8785
      @blazetownsend8785 Рік тому +1

      The board is notorious for taking the heat away. Sometimes applying some heat front under the board helps get to the temp you need.

    I have some doubts. The console I'm repairing has 5v input and 1.8v output from that voltage regulator. And the chip is powered when you turn on the console, not in standby as you say in the video. It is not always on, so to speak. Anyway, to fix the update error code, I'm going to solder a bigger ams1117 1.8v voltage regulator modifying the layout with some wire bridges.

    • @RetroTechCorner
      @RetroTechCorner  9 місяців тому +4

      The chip is powered on standby - and it provides power to the BT module. That's why you can turn the console on from the controller.

      Do you have an update to this? This is exactly the behavior my PS3 slim had. In fact, for a while, if I put the console in front of the Air Conditioning, it would have BT functionality for about 2 minutes. Then it eventually stopped working altogether. And no amount of stupid user tricks seem to bring BT/WiFi back up.
      Could that issue also be related to this chip? And if not, where is this thermistor you speak of, and what should I be looking for in terms of failure mode?

    • @RetroTechCorner
      @RetroTechCorner  10 місяців тому +4

      I don't see a problem as long as it has the same spec and is pin compatible. But I think the real problem is that this chip receives power (and thus "works") 24/7 (ie. even on standby). So if your PS3 was plugged to power for years - the chip (and supporting components) has been on for years... It seems to be a common failure so perhaps design issue...?
