Mari did a wonderful job, the tree is amazing and looks really good defoliated! Nice Jerome, a really good tree, I'm sure we'll see it in the National show some day, I hope!
This is the most beautiful Chloroleucon Tortum bonsai I've ever seen. And let me tell you guys I live in Rio and there's a couple of them literally a square from my home and some squares further there's this park just full of them... and this one is so close to the way they grow in nature. Astonishing.
Oh, I think you and Mari did a GREAT job on this tree! I'd noticed that back was lifting up like a ballerina's poorly fitting tutu; good you attached the wires. And🌱🌱 the all purpose bonsai soil I ordered arrived!!!!! Now let the replanting begin!🌿🌿🌿
Sou do Brasil e iniciante no Bonsai. Na minha opinião esse é o Bonsai de Pitheco mais bonito que já vi. Parabéns! Sempre acompanhando teus trabalhos daqui!
A gorgeous tree... It is a model for me. You see, I live in Brazil and we have some Pithecolobium tortum on the streets and squares... actually there is one in a square nearby that resembles yours ;) I myself have one too but I don't have enough space to let it grow like yours, yet yours is an inspirational model for me.
I love your Brazilian rain tree. Looks amazing Jerome! I have one that looks like it is meant to be a wall piece and grow up instead of a broad round canopy. Life (for the tree) goals :D
Beautifull tree! It is a Pithecolobium Tortum and is naturally on the northeast of Brazil, while the rain forest is in the central west, norhtwest and north regions
This was great information, Jerome. I remember sitting under this tree looking up into the canary with you in Ft. Lauderdale in March, just before buying my first Brazilian Rain Tree from you. I have many many more years before mine will be as nice as yours. Wish me luck.
Great work! Beautiful tree and really enjoyable video! I have really gotta get a Brazilian rain tree. And like you said, there is a lot of beauty in natural Clip & grow.
Hey, you should! They are awesome trees and the clip and grow makes it so easy. Check out our eBay store, we have a few available there: www.ebay.com/str/thebonsaisupply
Hello my friend! Just found your channel, and I love it! I have a really nice brazilian raintree as well, and was just wondering, what happens if you don't defoliate the branches? Also I may have missed the explanation, but why do you cut the thorns in half? is it just for size perspective? I trim the branches on mine when they get too long, but have never defoliated it or cut the thorns thanks, and all the best :)
I love the beautiful bark of the Raintree. I can only hope mine looks similar in 10 years! This video really helped me because I have removed the leaves from the stems like that and have yet to see them grow back. I began wondering if they would at all!
I have the same tree, but after 10 years it is about the same size....I don’t want it as big as yours, but I thought by now the branches and trunk would be much thicker. Any advice?
Beautiful tree! Well done! One of my favorite trees in the bonsai hobby. Alas I don't have any luck with them. I defoliated mine but sadly it never recovered.
Amazing tree, I would love a Brazilian rain tree of my own. 2 questions, how long do you leave the guide wires on for and how do you water after defoliating?
Hey Jerome, that was great! I really admire your job... keep it up! Since that is a tropical tree, have you thought about working a Jaboticaba? That is also another one from Brazil and from other South American countries as well. I have one and would like to see your input on it if it's possible.
Jerome-I keep coming back to rewatch this video every time I need some inspiration for my own BRT. I just finished removing some out of place branches and I added a number of guide wires to pull some unruly ones into place. How long does it usually take for BRT branches to take a set so you can then remove the wires? My only problem with my BRT is each fall when I bring it inside it starts shedding leaflets and continues doing so until the following spring when it is time to go back outside, which of course drives my wife crazy. I am considering this coming fall/winter moving it to the basement and keeping it in a plastic tent under grow lights. Now that you are up in Georgia where do you keep yours in winter? Thanks for these videos and I hope the bonsai supplies are selling well! BTW if you ever get up to Asheville let me know and I’ll show you my collection-Larry
Hey Larry! Thank you for your kind words🙏🌳 I had to sell my brt when I moved up to Georgia because it wouldn’t fit inside my greenhouse. Here’s a little trick I do with my Tropicals which you can do as well. I defoliate them when I bring them inside in the fall so they can acclimate easier and then defoliate them again in the spring to acclimate them to the outside. That way you don’t get leaf drop or yellow leaves.
We are The Bonsai Supply how did you avoid the soil from being too moist for too long when you planted such a small tree in a big concrete mixing tub ?
Amazing tree. All that hard work u put in really paid off. Love the channel by the way. Would love to have one not sure how they would handle the winter in n.y. i just lost a bougenvillea which sucked and i got it from florida. One question do u have anchors drilled into the pot at the bottom if not how do u tie them down . Quick tip if ur gonna create a mess take some paper towels damp them and put them around ur tree easy clean up just saw that from ryan on mirai
Thank you for being clear, and straight to the point. I'm getting a brazilian rain tree a bit bigger then the one you started with 10 yrs ago. Do you suggest I let it grow untouched for several years? Or should I clip out any splits of 3 etc. just minor work? Thank you!!!
Hi, Thank you for your feedback! I would just do minor work and remove all the things you definitely don't need, like inside branches and bar branches.
Hi Jerome how are you Sir! I have few rain tree and how often you think I should water it during indoor winter season? My room temperature I always have it around 72-75F/22C the most during winter. My trees are located next to the windows and gets the sun from E SE S plus the bright of the sunroof window in my room!! I normally water them once or twice a day during summer time outdoors depending how hot the temperatures gets outside. Thank You! You guys have a great Day!! 😊
I do have another question and cant seem to find the answer. I appreciate your help! :) I know brazilian rain trees should be repotted in mid summer, but i just recieved mine and its in soil from the nursery. I plan to keep it indoors for winter, could i repot it in bonsai soil faster draining more suitable for the tree if its kept inside? Just worried about potential root rot. Thank you!!!!
Hi, I suggest if you keep it indoors all year, defoliate the tree and do a full repotting now, and just keep it warm. If you only keep it indoors for overwintering, do a slip potting now. Use a bigger pot and slip it in without disturbing the root system and fill in the edges with fresh bonsai soil. Still do a repotting in mid-summer.
Thank you so much for your videos! This is a beautiful tree. I have a much younger Brazilian rain tree and have been following your techniques. Why do you choose this season to defoliate vs other seasons?
Just 3 minutes into the video and I am already wondering how long did it take you to defoliate the whole tree and remove the thorns. I guess at least 6 hours since there are four hands at work. Sometimes you just have to put in work and not think too much and focus on the fulfilling outcome. But the first couple of leaves are a little bit discouraging lol. Anyway awesome job my fellow countryman!!!
Hi Vinh, I think it actually only took us 4 hours. We made sure to drink some wine and relax while defoliating and trimming the thorns. Great time to forget yourself, lol!
Thank you Michael! Mari was about to quit on me,lol! It didn't take us two full days, I would say about 4-5 hours in total we just spread it over two days
Lovely intricate growth of the branches. The best brt I have seen and that you have achieved by clip and grow is amazing.
Great Tree! 🌴 Thank you for taking the time to make this educational video👏👍❤️🌱🌿
Soo jelly. This makes my Brazilian bonsai look like a walrus! lol
Probably the most beautifully shaped tree I’ve ever seen. But moreover happy anniversary to y’all.

Happy belated anniversary, Mari and Jerome! Very neat tree!

Gorgeous tree! My Brazilian rain tree forest survived its first major root pruning and is growing like a weed! Thanks for the inspiration!
Really cool tree my brother, and can’t imagine the effort it takes to defoliate that beast! Awesome.

Jerome,

Wow!! I'm just starting bonsai, and have a BRT. I love it but had no idea it had thorns! Very informative video. Thank so much!!!
I learned a lot

Hey Gerome do you keep akadama can you send one bag to india
Nice video , Did you grow it in ground to achieve that size ?
No, it never was in the ground. It was all pot grown
What is the minimum you leave for die-back? Sure it's different depending on the species, but are there rules of thumb you go by?
Great video as always , do these trees grow well from cuttings. Thanks
Hey Bruno, Thank you! Yes, they do!
Beautiful tree! I may have missed it, but why do you only cut the thorns in half vs removing them completely the first time around?
We only cut them in half the first time around because of die back.
Beautiful tree! Well done! One of my favorite trees in the bonsai hobby. Alas I don't have any luck with them. I defoliated mine but sadly it never recovered.
That is surprising to hear usually, they bounce back immediately. Did you maybe do it at the wrong time of the year?
@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Ah that's possible. I did the first repotting and defoliated on March 21st. Maybe it caught Covid19? 🤔😁

Hi Jerome. My name is Jerome as well. Can I defoliate my tree by cutting the leaf petiole instead of hand picking the leaves one by one?
What did you anchor the guy wires to at the bottom of your pot?
Hey Bob, yes, I used the feet of the pot to anchor the guide wire
Beautiful tree Jerome. How did you attach the guy wire to the pot?
Marcia Fungsang hi Marsia, the guide wire went around the foot of the pot
